OLINA Giovanni Pietro
Appresso Andrea Fei, In Roma, 1622. In-4 (245x175 mm.), pp. (12), 81, (12). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

MATAMOROS VÁZQUEZ GALLEGO, Benito.
Osuna: Ursaonae, apud Ioannem Serrano de Vargas y Ureña, Universitatis Typographum, 1622. Folio; 3 hojas, 554 pp., 18 hojas. -

BINET (Étienne);
L'édition originale a paru l'année précédente (1621). 94). Caillet, I, 1168 (édition 1646). Très bel exemplaire.

Antonio de Herrera, Jacques Le Maire
Description des Indes Occidentales, qu'on appelle aujourd huy le Nouveau Monde; avec La Navigation du vaillant Captaine de mer Jaques le Maire, & de plusieurs autres (Description of the West Indies, now called the New World; with The Navigation of the Valiant Captain of the Sea, Jacques le Maire, and several others) by Antonio de Herrera Published in Amsterdam in 1622, the first French edition of this highly important account of Spanish conquests in the New World. The text includes the first publication of of Jacques le Maire's journal of one of the greatest early Pacific voyages. Le Maire's 1615-16 expedition sailed around Cape Horn, explored the Pacific coast of South America, then ventured much farther west in search of Terra Australis. Le Maire's journal takes up more than sixty pages in the second section of the text. The first part of the book includes the first French translation (and second overall edition) of de Herrera's Historia General, an account of Spanish wide-ranging New World exploration and conquest. The third section briefly describes other voyages into the Pacific and also includes Pedro de Cevallos' account of Spanish possessions in the New World. Normally, early editions of this work list for $20,000 - $30,000 and even more. The copy for auction, however, is severely flawed. All seventeen maps are missing, as are two of the five illustration plates. Also absent are the title page and the last five pages of the text (it appears that these pages were simply never bound into this copy). The condition is otherwise good: the binding is firm, and there are s … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Inquisition] Garcia, Pablo
Early edition of this important guide compiled by the Secretary of the Council of the Spanish Inquisition, providing the exact formulae to be used in cases tried by the Inquisition feared both in the Peninsula and the American territories, where it had jurisdiction since the mid 16thcentury. A fundamental work for the understanding of the judicial process of the Inquisition: the Inquisitors were obliged to record in writing the proceedings, the torture applied, remarks and comments of the people under questioning, their clothing and other possessions, etc. It is in fact a demystifying book, as it outlines the procedures in careful detail, breaking so to speak the common understanding of how the inquisitorial process happened; in fact, it was a far less cruel process that it's Roman counterpart, torture could only be applied in very specific cases, when other methods had been exhausted, no serious or irreversible damaged could be caused, a doctor needed to be present to oversee it, no women or child could be subject to torture, etc. So systematic and organized, that even a maximum of time was imposed. The institution was given jurisdiction and form in the late 15thcentury partly in response for the need of creating solid institutions with undisputable power, it was given a structure, which hadn't been the case before; and was in part aimed at looking into the conversos, The work was vastly reproduced in the 16th, 17thand 18thcenturies, as it remained the standard manual for inquisitorial use. London: W. Stansky for Matthew Lownes, and William Barret, 1622. Second edition, first published in 1622. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Henry VII by John Payne, title within architectural woodcut border (McKerrow & Ferguson 224), woodcut initials and headpieces, text within ruled border with blank marginal columns for side-notes (one printed side-note on X1b). [iv], 248 pp. Folio. Large paper copy on thick paper of the second edition of Bacon's history of Henry VII. Bacon had promised the work to James I while on trial, and he quickly completed the work following his impeachment for taking bribes. "It should be seen in the context of humanist historiography rather than as a precursor of its modern methods. Bacon was keenly interested in the conventional topics of virtue and fortune, but was unconventional in placing a much stronger emphasis on fortune than virtue. The central lesson of The History of Henry VII was that a ruler must remain open to accident and ready to seize the opportunities it offered" (ODNB). ESTC S122252; Gibson 116b. Gamba 2029. Nissen 693. Souhart 355. Ceresoli 384. First edition of this famous book on birds, their habits, methods of capture and care, noteworthy for the 66 superb full-page engravings by Tempesta, Villamena and Maggi, which «are much superior to the figures of birds by English and French artists of the same period...» (Harting 278). Paris, Toussaint Dubray, 1622. In 12° (mm 138x81); cc. (6), 166, (1), (1 bianca). Vasto poema in dodici canti in ottave, … [Click Below for Full Description]

TASSONI, Alessandro (1565-1635)
Toussaint Dubray, 1622. In 12mo (cm 13); legatura francese coeva in marocchino bordeaux con eleganti decorazioni sui piatti e sul dorso, tagli dorati (molto ben conservata); cc. (4), 166, (1), 1 bianca.
Amsterdam: Michiel Colijn, 1622. 210 x 290mm, A Dutch copy of one of the few Spanish maps of the Americas printed during the period of exploration, from an updateded edition of Herrera's 'Descriptio Indiæ Occidentalis', first published in 1601. After a century of official silence on Spanish exploring, Philip II appointed Herrera y Tordesillas Historian of the Indies and allowed him full access to the official archives. The result was a comprehensive study of Spanish involvement in the New World. The 14 maps, regarded as very accurate for their time, were derived from the manuscript charts of Juan López de Velasco and are some of the very few printed Spanish maps of America. The Spanish fixation with secrecy means there are only twelve place names on the entire map. Although this Dutch edition was updated, the only difference on the map is that the title is top left rather than top right. BURDEN: 197.

Palafox y Mendoza, Juan de.
Melchor Alegre, Madrid, 1622. 41 h., 257 folios y 10 hs. de tablas. 30cmx22cm. Texto en español a dos columnas. Capitulares grabadas. Errores de paginación. Obra completa.
