CAMPANELLA, Tomasso
Frankfurt: Erasmus Kempffer for Godfried Tampach, 1622. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to, [23.5 x 17 cm]. 58 pp, [1 integral blank]. Bound in old vellum, rebacked with vellum spine, endpapers renewed. Pages somewhat spotted as typical of Frankfurt printings of the time, mainly untrimmed at head and foot, occasional minute restorations to blank margins. Scarce first edition of this important polemic: Campanella's contribution to the defence of Galileo, written in 1616 during the latter's first brush with the authorities but only published in 1622. The work is a spirited plea for freedom of thought (libertas philosophandi) as well as a concerted defence of the mobility of the Earth. "In addition to his interests in the astrological side of stellar phenomena, Campanella was a supporter of the Copernican system as defended by Galileo. In several works, principally the Apologia pro Galileo (1622), he sided with the embattled Florentine, not only supporting the Copernican theory but also on broader issues, including those involving the competing claims of religion and science" (DSB). The text adopts structure of a quaestio, divided into 5 chapters consisting of arguments against Galileo, their refutations, and vindications of pro-Galilean arguments. "In the Apologia, Campanella uses incisive and tightly-knit arguments while displaying an exceptionally remarkable hermeneutical skill - at times making it hard for the reader to follow without getting lost in the myriad of citations and references" (Ernst, p 164). Leiden, Thomas Erpenius for Johannes Maire, 1622.. 4to. (16), 458, (2) pp. With the title in a woodcut architectural frame, head- and tailpieces built up from cast arabesque fleurons, woodcut factotums. 18th-century sprinkled calf, sewn on 5 cords, gold-tooled spine with red sheepskin label, waved combed paste-downs, red and blue sprinkled edges.. "First printing of the Pentateuch in Arabic characters" (Smitskamp). Edited by Thomas Erpenius and printed with his influential nashk Arabic types, cut under his direction by Arent Corsz. Hogenacker in Leiden. It gives the text of a 13th-century translation of the Pentateuch in the Maghreb dialect (spoken in Mauritania). Erpenius was one of the most distinguished orientalists and by far the best Arabist of his day. He published an influential Arabic grammar and several excellent critical editions. His own private printing office, equipped with Hebrew, Arabic, Syriac, Ethiopic and Turkish type, produced its first works as early as 1615. Hogenacker later cut more Arabic types and his heirs sold Arabic and other punches and matrices to Oxford University for their embryonic printing office. From the library of the noted Swedish orientalist, translator and librarian Carl Aurivilius (1717-1786) with his manuscript bookplate on the paste-down, dated 1750. TASSONI, Alessandro (1565-1635). -
In - 4. Legatura coeva in mezza pergamena, tassello con titolo impr. in oro sul dorso. Antiporta, ritratto a p. pag., 12 tavv. f.t. Gamba 2097: «Stimatissima edizione». Vinciana, Aut. Ital. del '600, 3018: «... la migliore edizione della Secchia»

VAN DE VENNE, Adriaen, artist; CATS, Jacob (1577-1660).
Middelburg: Jan van der Hellen for Jan Pieterss. van de Venne, 1622. 4to (233 x 176 mm). [16], 60, [19], [1 blank] pp. Large emblematic publisher's mark on title-page, four half-page engraved illustrations, by Pieter de Jode (2), Pieter Serwouters, and Willem van der Passe after Adriaen van der Venne. Woodcut head- and tail-pieces and initials. Title a bit soiled and with a short marginal tear, light dampstaining to first and last leaves. Later parchment over pasteboards, ms. spine title. Provenance: Samuel Ashton Thompson Yates (1842-1903), bookplate dated 1894.*** first edition of Cats' retelling of the Biblical tale of Queen Vasthi, the wife of Ahasuerus, who refused her husband's summons to appear before his guests wearing the royal crown (and presumably nothing else), and who was duly punished. The first part of Cats' word-playing verse adaptation, whose title may be translated as The Theater of Manly Respectability, is a long speech in the Queen's defense and in defense of all women, followed by a speech against her and in favor of "Manly Respectability." The work concludes with the Judgment, which is that Vasthi should obey her husband, because women's subservience to men is a law of nature. A final poem titled "Aller Princessen, Spiegel, aller Vrovwen, Spoor," is illustrated with an engraving showing the humbled queen wearing a yoke around her neck. The parallels and differences between the Biblical Ahasuerus and Herodotus' tale of King Candaules (supplied in Latin and Dutch translations in an appendix), whose wife's rebellion was more successful, are fully exploite … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOTERO, Giovanni
Venice: presso Alessandro Vecchi, 1622. Small thick quarto; with four engraved maps in the main work; complete with the rare "Aggiunta" section with its 33 woodcuts, 30 of them full-page; an attractive copy in fine condition in contemporary vellum, endpapers renewed; spine lettered in ink at an early date. Mixing the real with the fantastic: early 16th century woodcuts printed a century later. Posthumous edition of the highly regarded Botero chronicle, published in eight parts with eight title-pages, and including the very rare final part, the "Aggiunta alla quarta parte dell'Indie", with its extraordinary woodcuts. This section appears in just two of the very many early editions of Botero's Relationi, those printed by Vecchi in 1618 and 1622/23; the present copy - notable for the excellent dark inking of the images - is an example of the latter, which differs from the earlier printing in having the Aggiunta section laid out in a more pleasing manner with the text more attractively set in a larger font. This version also introduces another printing of one of the woodcuts to highlight the sectional title-page.Both printings are so rare that when the bibliophile Walter Oakeshott first discovered a copy of Botero with the Burgkmair cuts he thought it to be unique. He analyses and discusses the woodcuts at length in his authoritative Roxburghe Club publication "Some Woodcuts by Hans Burgkmair". Although the woodblocks were cut in the sixteenth century they were not published then, and wormholes in the blocks that show clearly in the printing suggest that they must have lain idl … [Click Below for Full Description]

Powell was a notable poet, a man of letters and an industrious legal antiquarian. In this work, the Attourney's Academy and the Attornies' Almanack Powell offered guidance to lawyers concerning the location and use of records, mostly to settle title claims. All are mentioned favorably by Holdsworth, who notes that the study of early records was an important aspect of legal education. In a sense, these books helped students to locate material for study. They are also important sources for students of Shakespeare. (All are listed in Lee's Catalogue of Shakespeareana). Amsterdam Colijn 1622 - 4 parts in 1 volume, folio (36 x 24 cm. approx.), [4], 44, [3], 46-81 [i.e. 82], [1],[1], 2-9, [1] 2-11 leaves, 110 leaves (complete save for final blank), Engraved additional title, 17 engraved folding maps, 5 engraved illustrations (light toning, some dampstaining, chiefly in the bottom margin towards end, letterpress title slightly soiled and with small chips to corners). nineteenth century red roan-backed marbled paper-covered boards, spine lettered in gilt (extremities rubbed). The first complete account of the Le Maire-Schouten expedition around the world, the first to successfully round Cape Horn, and the first edition in Latin, expanding significantly the Madrid edition of 1601. The first two parts of the book concentrate on the New World and include fine maps of Central and South America, with those on the Pacific coast adding a great deal of new geographical knowledge. Of primary importance, however, is the second part containing the description of the great Dutch navigator Jacob Le Maire's 1615-1617 voyage in search of Terra Australis. Le Maire's rounding of Patagonia via Cape Horn impacted navigation in many ways, but principally by dispelling the idea of an imaginary Southland. Michel Colin issued simultaneous Latin, French and Dutch editions of this work, adding three maps not in the 1601 Spanish edition. Copies are known with a portrait of Le Maire, but this is not called for in the list of plates. In addition, the small map on the title-page is noteworthy for being the first cartographic depiction of California as an island. Alden & L … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOOTHBY, Richard.
BMC III, p. 943; Gay, Bibl. de l'Afrique et l'Arabe 3204 (note); ESTC R200937; cf. G. Campbell, David Griffiths and the missionary "History of Madagascar" (2012), p. 416. First separately published edition of Boothby's description of Madagascar and its opportunities for trade and colonization, detailing the trade with India, Persia (including Ormuz, captured in 1622 by a joint Anglo-Persian force) and other countries along the Arabian Sea and touching on a large variety of subjects including Saint Augustine's harbour, culture of the natives, opportunities for plantations, natural resources, pearl fishery and trading practices of the English, Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch. The British merchant Richard Boothby had reinvested his capital in the East India Company around 1615, after which he sailed to India where he was jailed as a result of a dispute with company officials. Upon his release he returned to London by way of Madagascar, which inspired his enthusiasm so much that he wrote the present book advising the East India Company's rivals to take advantage of it as the ideal location for a European colony. With the bookplate Crosby Gaige (1882-1949). Several chapters are heavily annotated in English in an early hand. These give information about a voyage or voyages and would reward further study. With the gutter margin of the title-page and all margins of the last leaf restored but otherwise in good condition, with a small tear in the fore-edge margin of the title-page and a couple minor spots. Rebacked, but binding otherwise good.
