GUMPELZHAIMER, Adam 1559-1625
[ca. 1622]. 143 x 97 mm. + wide margins. Slightly worn; edges browned. In very good condition overall. Possibly after the same painting on which the woodcut portrait in his Compendium Musicae of 1632 is based. Gumpelzhaimer spent most of his active life in Augsburg, where he was Kantor and Präzeptor at the school and church of St. Anna from 1581 until his death. "Gumpelzhaimer was probably best known to German musicians of and after his time through his Compendium musicae... The richness of musical activity of St Anna is indicated not only by Gumpelzhaimer's music but also by the extensive holdings of the church library during his 44 years there. A handwritten inventory was started by Gumpelzhaimer in 1620 and continued by Faust in 1625. This list includes, in addition to many printed collections, several large manuscript books of polyphonic music in score notation. Two of these books have survived, one begun in 1599 and the other completed in 1624. They were copied out mostly by Gumpelzhaimer and contain compositions by many prominent musicians of the time." CAQUET DE l'ACCOUCHEE - 1622
S.l., s.n., 1622. Cf. P. Brun, ‘La Bourgeoisie au XVIIe siècle d'après Les Caquets de L'accouchée', Revue d'Hist. Litt. de la France, n°2, 1896, p. 192-203. (Arbour 10458. MAGNEN, Jean Chrysostôme.
Arents 234-b; Wellcome IV, p. 27. Third, pirated edition of a comprehensive treatise on the medicinal qualities of tobacco. Although a similar book, written by Johann Neander, had been published in 1622, Magnen claimed to have found new medicinal uses for tobacco, which legitimised the publication of this new book. Like Neander, Magnen gives the botany, history and medicinal qualities of tobacco and presents his objections to some of his predecessor's statements. "To the comprehensive collection of ailments and infirmities presented in earlier works on nicotian therapeutics, Magnenus adds the following: general lousiness, lichen and anchor, jaundice, lethargy, polypus, drunkenness, ranula, struma, pleurisy, empyema, mentagra, boils, lupus, herpes, etc. etc., ad nauseam." (Arents). With two late 18th-century inscriptions in French and Spanish quoting the use of tobacco. Somewhat browned and spotted throughout and the ownership inscription has damaged the paper; half-title is missing. Binding somewhat worn at the edges, the hinges worn and slightly cracked; otherwise in good condition.

"First printing of the Pentateuch in Arabic characters" (Smitskamp). Edited by Thomas Erpenius and printed with his influential nashk Arabic types, cut under his direction by Arent Corsz. Hogenacker in Leiden. It gives the text of a 13th-century translation of the Pentateuch in the Maghreb dialect (spoken in Mauritania). Erpenius was one of the most distinguished orientalists and by far the best Arabist of his day. He published an influential Arabic grammar and several excellent critical editions. His own private printing office, equipped with Hebrew, Arabic, Syriac, Ethiopic and Turkish type, produced its first works as early as 1615. - With bookplate, owner's inscription and library stamp of Verplanck Colvin (1847-1920). 1622. Nobile Vicentino. Ceresoli, pp.131-132. Casey Wood, p. 279. Harting, 267. Schwerdt I, p.95. Souhart, p.86. [Click Below for Full Description]

HERRERA, Antonio de.
Amsterdam: Emanuel Colin, 1622. Folio, engraved and printed title-pages, with 5 engravings and 17 folding engraved maps; in handsome dark calf by Aquarius. Herrera's highly important account of the New World, including the first true publication of the Journal of the Le Maire-Schouten expedition around the world. Their voyage in search of Terra Australis is described in full in the second part of the book (Iournal, & Miroir de la Navigation Australe), which publishes for the first time the "correct" narrative of the expedition. The momentous Pacific crossing was 'the last expedition of the seventeenth century to search for Terra Australis from the east... ' (Schilder) and 'the one genuine voyage of Oceanic exploration between Quiros and Tasman... ' (Spate). Sailing through Le Maire Strait, and rounding Patagonia via Cape Horn, this voyage had an enormous effect on future navigation, helping to put an end to the idea of the imaginary Southland. This is one of three versions published in the year of first publication: Latin, French, and Dutch language versions all appeared at the same time, using the same engravings; all editions are now rare. The Dutch version was republished in the Australian Maritime Series. An earlier narrative of the expedition had been published by Admiral Spilbergen, who had taken Le Maire and Schouten back to Europe after their capture by the VOC in the Dutch East Indies. Spilbergen had used much of Le Maire's journal to create his narrative, but not until this publication by Herrera did the original account of the crucial voyage appear in full. The spic … [Click Below for Full Description]

LEO VI (the Wise) of Byzantium and Antonius SEVERUS of Rome (attributed).
1622. BMC STC Italian, p. 622; Caillet 11042; Edit16/ICCU, CNCE 28586; Mortimer (Italian) 254. First edition of the so-called Oracles of Leo the Wise, with a bilingual (Latin an Italian) text and 16 lovely and rather surreal engravings: an emblematic book of prophecies traditionally attributed to Leo VI (866-911/12), Emperor of Byzantium from 866 to his death and at least here also to Antonius Severus (188-217), sole Emperor of Rome from his murder of his brother in December 211 to his death (the book does not indicate which Severus is intended, but the preface notes that he reigned from 212). The Latin text was circulated, already attributed to Leo the Wise, in the 12th century, but Christians revived it in the 16th century and interpreted it as a prophecy that the Ottoman Empire would fall in 1622. These oracles remained popular in the 17th century, when they were presented as having predicted the setbacks that the Ottomans suffered in Europe in that period.Owner's inscriptions on the title-page, further with a bookplate. With a water stain in the first quire, but otherwise in very good condition, with only very minor foxing. The sewing supports have broken at the back hinge, the thong ties are lost and the vellum is slightly wrinkled, but the binding is still in good condition. [Attributes: First Edition]

HERRERA Y TORDESILLAS, Antonio de.
Amsterdam: Michiel Colijn, 1622. 215 x 290mm, A Dutch copy of one of the few Spanish maps of the Americas printed during the period of exploration, from an updateded edition of Herrera's 'Descriptio Indiæ Occidentalis', first published in 1601. It shows Florida, the Bahamas and the West Indies south to Venezuela, with keys of places on the islands. After a century of official silence on Spanish exploring, Philip II appointed Herrera y Tordesillas Historian of the Indies and allowed him full access to the official archives. The result was a comprehensive study of Spanish involvement in the New World. The 14 maps, regarded as very accurate for their time, were derived from the manuscript charts of Juan López de Velasco and are some of the very few printed Spanish maps of America. Although this Dutch edition was updated, the only differences to the map are a wider plate and the title is bottom right rather than top right. BURDEN: 198.

[Music Iconography] Matham, Adriaen. (1590-1660)
Amsterdam, 1622. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Original ca. 1620 engraving of an old man playing the violin by the Dutch Golden Age artist, son of the engraver Jacob Matham. The man, wearing a feathered cap and with a bagpipe strapped over his shoulder, is shown playing the violin left-handed, holding the instrument against his chest. The text below the image is a cheeky reference to the seventeenth-century sexual connotations of the violin and reads (translated from the Dutch): "My snares [strings] are still strong, as well as all the rest / So if my Aeltie helps then it will sure go best." The empty bagpipe the man carries is also a veiled reference to sexual prowess. ÂHollstein Dutch 6; "Old men in black and white: the imagination of the age in Dutch printmaking (1550-1650)", Anouk Janssen, p.Â283, fig. 188;ÂAmsterdam RijksmuseumÂRP-P-1883-A-7212. Set on a silk mat and framed. Significant losses along the right edge with smaller hole and loss along the opposite side, area of staining to middle right, collector's pencil notation at foot, frame heavily chipped. 15.5 x 25 cm; 6.1 x 9.6 inches.
