Monaco Antonio
Apud Victorium Benatium, 1621. In - 4° (160 X 210 mm) pp. [32] 362 [84]. Legatura coeva in pergamena, titolo manoscritto al dorso.

Marc'Antonio GUARINI / Andrea BORSETTI / Cesare BAROTTI
Ferrara, presso gli heredi di Vittorio Baldini / in Ferrara, per Giulio Bolzoni Giglio, Stampator Episcopale / in Ferrara, appresso Giuseppe Rinaldi, 1621 - 1670 - 1770. Marco Antonio Guarini, o Marcantonio Guarini (Ferrara, ...
GIUSTINIANI Bernardo [chierico regolare]
per Giovanni Gislandi e Gio. Tomaso Rossi, Mondovì 1621 - 2 opere in 1 volume in-4 (210x145 mm.), pp. (16), 256, (8); 83, (1). BIBLE
Iames Seldenslach, Antwerp, 1621. Scarcest of the early Rhemes editions, this is the first Catholic New Testament in English to appear in the small duodecimo "pocket" format. It departs from other editions in collecting the extensive annotations into a separate section at the end of the volume rather than at the end of each chapter. Collates complete, including blank between testaments and four final blanks. Later fine calf binding with spine in five panels offset by raised bands and gilt title and date. Owners' inscriptions on title and preliminary blank. Controversial note written on one preliminary blank regarding "Romish error." Three leaves of text have brief marginal annotations in bottom margin. Occasional shaving of headlines and fore edge margins. Initialed in 12 s: **; A-M; Aa Pp. Final four leaves of Pp are blank. 285 and 349 pp. plus tables. Very attractive copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Paris: P. Des Hayes, 1621. Amours de Tabarin et d'Isabelle, Les. Paris: P. Des Hayes, 1621. Original edition. Octavo. Modern full green morocco, spine with raised bands, gilt. 16pp. Leaf of title, verso blank. Collation: A-B8. Sixteen stanzas in verse between Tabarin and Isabelle. OCLC: No North American locations. A satirical dialogue in verse between Tabarin and his beloved, possibly written by Tabarin himself. The setting is the house of Isabella, and the dialogue finds Tabarin pleading for Isabella's hand (although pleading for her breasts would be more accurate). A satirical dialogue in verse between Tabarin and his beloved, possibly written by Tabarin himself.* The setting is the house of Isabella and the dialogue finds Tabarin pleading for Isabella's hand (although pleading for her breasts would be more accurate). Isabelle steadfastly declines and infuses her patient rejections with subtle ridicule. The poem ends when Isabelle walks out on Tabarin, and he remains alone, convinced that eventually he will win her over. The syntax and wit of the stanzas below indicate that the author of this skit had a gift for subtle use of language and satire, much like Tabarin himself (as recorded in his known works): T: "Quel est ce grief tourment, qui vivement m'enflame? Me semble qu'vn brazier brule dedans mon ame, Et qu'vn couteau tranchant me trauerse le coeur." [Translation]: What is this grievous torment that inflames me so keenly? How does it happen that I see myself utterly candied [or: pickled] in languor? Plautius, Caspar.
1621. Curiously the dedicatee of this work, Caspar Plautius, is certainly also its author, writing under the pseudonym of Honorius Philoponus. Plautius was abbot of Seitenstetten in Lower Austria, and no doubt wrote as a compliment to a fellow Benedictine: Bernard Buil or Boyl of Montserrat, appointed by the pope vicar general of the Indies, who, with others of the order, accompanied Columbus on his second voyage as missionaries. In the style of a medieval legendary, Nova typis transacta navigatio novi orbis Indiae occidentalis relates first the westward voyage of St. Brendan, then the exploits of the Boyl and his fellow monks, including some description of the customs of the American native peoples they met, with their lands, their agriculture, their feast customs, et al. Boyl's missionary enterprise failed, and sadly he is now only remembered for his mordant criticism of Columbus. This book bears an ornate, emblematic engraved title-page, with portraits of St. Brendan and Boyl and more, and no fewer than 18 leaf-filling plates by Wolfgang Kilian. These plates, which mix fancy and realism in entirely engaging ways, include a portrait of Columbus, a scene of St. Brendan celebrating mass on the back of a whale, botanical images of the marvelous Peruvian potato, and numerous views of the missionaries' interaction with the natives, some friendly, and some not-- the unfriendliest being notably violent and gory. Also, on p. 35-36 is given an example of purported native American music, with both words and notation. This copy is one (probably the first) of two states of t … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: W Stansby for Rich Meighen, 1621 A very scarce and unusual historical work by William Slatyer (1587-1647), who divides the history of Britain into 10 periods, conveying information through Odes in parallel latin and english text. This copy is complete but of slightly different collation to that set out on EEBO. In full leather binding: the boards are contemporary with much wear to corners and edges; the spine, with raised bands, is newer - possibly early - mid 1800's but has considerable wear to joints - particularly the front joint where there is splitting. The front board is still attached, but probably not for long. There is a small bookplate on the front pastedown. Contents: blank; pasted explanation of the frontispiece (with some loss to the top at the gutter with very slight loss of text); hand-coloured frontispiece which forms the title page; dedication to James 2pp; to the Reader 4 pp; poems - 7pp (placed after finis in EEBO copy); 'This Poeme, entituled Pale-Albion, is digested into ten seuerall Bookes' 1p (again after finis in EEBO); Chronologia 4pp (final pp in EEBO copy); Description, Ode I p 1- 303 - pagination fault - p 195 should be 185, small hole in outer margin p289, very small hole at p291 - no loss of text; latin poem headed 'Potentissimo Jacobo' 1p; dedicatory poems 4pp; Finis; blank; alphabeticall table 7pp; Finis; Palae Albion liber and errata 1p; blank. AGRICOLA, Georgius
Verlegung Ludwig Königs, Basel, 1621. Small folio. Third German edition of Agricola’s most famous mining book ("De Re Metallica"). ff. iv, pp. ccccxci, [7]. Title page is printed in red and black and displays a vignette depicting an assayer working at a muffle furnace. 273 woodcut illustrations by Hans Rudolf Manuel Deutsch accompany the text, including two fold out plates. Many of the woodcuts are almost a full page in size. Bound in full period vellum with usual age-toning, soiling and wear. Ribbon ties are lacking. Two small areas of careful repair are visible on the inner front cover, near the joint. The bottom tail cap contains minor restoration. Interior pages show scattered foxing, browning and age-toning in varying degrees. A couple of minor carefully sealed marginal tears are present. A neatly sealed tear (6.5 cm) is located on the upper portion of the title page, difficult to notice at first glance; a name is written unobtrusively in an old hand on the lower corner of the title. The first 35 pages (including title) contain a spot of worming in the bottom margin. The final gatherings also contain several scattered tiny worm holes. Some minor early marginalia is found on p. xc; a short word is faintly underlined on p. cccxxxv. Georgius Agricola (Gerog Bauer) (1494-1555) was a German physician who practiced medicine in the Bohemian mining district of Joachimsthal and then at Chemnitz in Saxony. He developed a strong interest in mining and mining technology which he studied on site. BMN I, p. 377; Krivatsy 12484; KVK & WorldCat (2 copies); STCN (2 copies). Fourth(?) edition of a very rare anonymous medical guide with 639 numbered entries, most of them discussing a particular ailment and recommending a medicine and/or other treatment. At the end is an alphabetical index of the ailments. All editions are rare. The Dutch title can be translated as "Princely gift, or: A medicine book" and the title-pages give some information about its origin. They say the book has been held in esteem by the House of Nassau in general and the Prince of Orange in particular. The printer's note to reader in 1621 says that "respected professors" provided these recipes for the noble houses of the Princes of Nassau, who have found them highly beneficial and preserve them as precious jewels. With the corner of one leaf burnt off, affecting a few words of text, and ink marks or dirt on an occasional leaf, but otherwise in good condition, with only an occasional minor marginal defect. The binding is rather dirty, with a small chip at the head of the spine and the sewing somewhat loose.

MATROT (Adolphe)
