HOMER.
Geerebaert XLVIII, 8; Muller 319; Scheepers II, 327; De Vries 368. First complete Dutch edition of Homer's Iliad, and the first edition published in the new translation of Jan Hendrik Glazemaker (1620-1682), who is best known for his translations of Descartes and Spinoza. The second volume (books 13-24) was published first to complement the earlier translation of Karel van Mander of books 1-12. The first volume in Glazemaker's new translation followed four years later. A short biography of Homer is given in the preliminaries, taken from Herodotus. From early on Homer was very popular in the Netherlands. A few plates slightly browned, otherwise in very good condition.

Calepini, Ambrosii (Ambrogio Calepino)
Geneve [Geneva]: Ex Typographia Matthaei Berjon, 1620. Elephant folio size, approximately 1750 pp. Ambrogio Calepino (ca. 1440-1511), although the son of a Count, entered the Augustine order at a young age. One of the missions of the Augustinians was education, and to aid this mission, they established their own printing press at Nuremberg in 1479, very shortly after the invention of movable type. True to his calling, Ambrogio Calepino dedicated his life to his Latin Dictionary which was first published in 1502; numerous revisions followed, with the Aldine printers publishing several editions. Non-Latin words were gradually added, to form a work of words from seven additional languages (Hebrew, Greek, French, Italian, German, Hispanic, and English); eventually, the Basel edition of 1590 contained eleven languages. Many later dictionaries depended on Calepino's work for almost 300 years, up through the late 1700s. This volume appears to have been in the possession of at least two theological libraries; there is a small plate at the top of the front turn-in "BIB. COLL. PICTAV. S.J." (Society of Jesus, the Jesuits); on the title page and the page following are contemporaneous ms notes, with stamps in the shape of a cross, indicating the volume from was the library of an order of Carmelites, "Ex Carmelo Bayonensi". ___DESCRIPTION: Rebacked calf spine with red title label lettered in gilt, contemporaneous calf boards covered with brown paste paper, beneath the front paste-down at the hinge is an old sheet of what appears to be Gregorian chant (used in binding), title page in red … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giovanni Andrea Sirani (Bologna 1610 -1670)
Etching, circa 1620-30, without printing details. A magnific impression, with a good plate tone, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the platemark, light abrasion on verso, otherwise very good condition. Ascribed by Bartsch to the school of Guido Reni; we believe there are significant stylistic affinities with the hand of Giovanni Andrea Sirani. Unknown collector's mark on verso. Bartsch XVIII, n. 32: Bertelà. Incisiori Bolognesi ed Emiliani del '600, n. 1054.

Oliviero GATTI (Piacenza 1579 circa - Bologna verso il 1650)
Bulino, 1620 circa, firmata in lastra, in basso a destra "Oliv Gatt f".
"The work is based by Mario Cartaro map of the area (1584) and its subsequent derivations by Duchetti, Cartaro himself and Van Aelst. Matthaeus GREUTER (Roma 1564 - 1638)
[Click Below for Full Description]

SONETTI.
[Click Below for Full Description]

DAMANT, François and Nicolas and family.
Low Countries, c, 1620. Illustrated manuscript on paper, folio (370 × 240 mm). ff. 6, followed by 5 unnumbered blank leaves (i.e 5 bifolia preceded by a single half sheet), neat manuscript in French, secretarial and italic hands, brown ink, illustrated with ink heraldic drawings, with some colour and leadpoint additions. Slightly dusty towards untrimmed margins, but the paper fine and strong. The narrative pedigree of a royal librarian: François Damant (c. 1535-1611) and his brother Nicolas (c. 1531-1616). François was Conseiller and Garde joyaux (i.e. keeper of the library) to the Duke of Burgundy, Philip II, King of Spain in the Netherlands and afterwards to his son Phillip III. His name appears in numerous manuscripts and records relating to the library and he was also a member of the Order of the Golden Fleece (Toison d'or) from 1587. He was son of Pierre Damant (1503-68), also of the Toison d'or and a royal librarian in his time. His brother Nicolas, who shares this pedigree was an official in the Habsburg government of Flanders and became Chancellor of Brabant and served Phillip II as a Councillor of State, Garde des sceaux and Garde joyaux, before (as is narrated in the pedigree) moving to Madrid when the centre of administration of the Austrian Netherlands moved there in 1698. The gruesome story of how and why he was granted two dogs (gros chiens) and a crown as part of his coat of arms is also related here in the context of a royal hunt (chasse du sanglier) in which a boar was killed by the royal dogs in his presence. The pedigree also records the marriages of bot … [Click Below for Full Description]

Holy Bible
Geneva: Rouiere, 1620. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. In 1584, the Plantin Greek/Hebrew Bible published in Antwerp became one of the most widely sought after Bibles in the world. The Greek text alone would go through ten or more variations over the course of the next quarter century. Beginning in 1609, Genevan publisher Peter Rouiere would publish this famed Plantin Bible, focusing heavily on the Greek language. It, too, was highly popular, so much so that Rouiere would print octavo and quarto editions of the same text. This 1620 quarto edition is the Greek text alone as the Hebrew text was not included in this printing. Rouiere also included the famous critical notes of Joseph Scaliger. According to Hardy, Scaliger's notes marked "important steps toward the modern historical study of the New Testament.".

Maffei Giacinto
Perugia, Alvigi (ex typographia Aloysiorum), 1620. In 4to (mm. 208x150). Cc. [18]. Segnatura: A6 B-D4.
