HORNIUS (HORN), Georgius.
[32], 545, [43], [1 blank] pp.One of the two first editions published simultaneously of a historical work written by the German historian Georgius Hornius (1620-1670). "In the dusk of his life, he moved to universal history, an endeavor that culminated with his Arca Noae, which comprised the chronicles of Europe, alongside descriptions of the cultures of China, Egypt, Assyria, ancient Greece, Rome, and pre-Columbian America, and surveys of their religion, art and literature" (Kowner). Entitled "Noah's ark", it contains the history of the world from its creation to the 17th century. It successively deals with all the great empires and kingdoms and their important founders and rulers. It contains narratives about the founding of Damascus, the founding of Arab kingdoms by Ishmael and Isaac, the caliphates, and the Turks. Besides sections on the Middle East, the book discusses Chinese and American history, struggling with sources that predate the biblical sources. With an old shelf mark on spine and a library stamp on flyleaf. Browned with some small spots throughout, engraved title-page slightly thumbed, a water stain on leaf *2 and a small tear in leaf *3, and frequent wormholes, slightly affecting the text near the end of the book. Bookblock only loosely attached to binding. Otherwise a good copy.l Alden & Landis 666/75; R. Kowner, From white to yellow (2014), 9; Sabin 33013.

THEVENOT, Melchisedech.
[12], XII, 47, [1 blank] pp.First edition of a delightfully illustrated manual on swimming. It is one of the earliest works on the subject, being preceded, according to the author's preface, only by the works of the Englishman Everard Digby and the Dutchman Nicholas Wijnman. Melchisedech Thevenot (ca. 1620-1692), was a French traveller and learned book collector. He published collections of voyages, and wrote several curious treatises, including a Tartar grammar and this illustrated guide to swimming. It was translated into English in 1699, but the next French edition did not appear until 1769, when swimming became more widely popular; it remained the standard manual for the rest of the 18th century.A few occasional spots and the binding slightly rubbed. With old owner's comments in a neat hand in ink on first free endpaper and the plates numbered by hand in ink. [NICOLAY, NICOLAS].
"64" [=65] ll., 65-114, [3], [1 blank] pp.Nicolay's series of engravings of Turkish magistrates and officers (including descriptions) followed by Thomas' collection of emblems, prophesying the fall of the Ottoman empire, as published in the 1620 edition of Laonikos Chalcocondyle's L'Histoire de la décadence de l'Empire Grec. It doesn't have any date or publisher's information itself, but has the same pagination errors described in the copy of Chalcocondyle in the Staatsbibliothek Berlin ("Bl. 32 als 23 gez. und Bl. 64 doppelt gez."). This history concentrates on the later period of the Byzantine empire and was first published in Latin in 1556. The enlarged French translation with additions by Artus Thomas first appeared 1612 and was possibly reissued in 1616 and 1620. The original costume plates by Nicolas Nicolay were first published in Nicolay's work Les navigations peregrinations et voyages, faicts en la Turquie (Lyon, 1567). It was translated into various languages and left a deep mark on later publications on the same topic. Its success was largely due to the 60 (later expanded to 62) illustrations of the different costumes worn in the area Nicolay visited. Subsequent works on the Turcs also included Nicolay's illustrations, in woodcuts or engraved after the originals as in the Chalcocondyle's edition of 1612.Binding very slightly rubbed and on leaf somewhat loose. Very good copy.l Cf. BUXTORF, Johann
In Inclyta Helvetiorum Basilea: impensis Ludovici, 1620. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. A rare 17th-century Hebrew / Latin lexicon and Old Testament concordance. Johann Buxtorf began working on a Hebrew lexicon in the early years of the 17th-century. However, this work was one of the few works of his that had to be completed by other writers, mainly his son. This dictionary, known as 'Thesaurus Grammaticus Linguae', was published multiple times throughout the next two centuries and would become the basis for many 19th-century Hebrew concordances. This work serves as a reference tool for Old Testament research particularly the Pentateuch. Very few copies of this book are known to exist, especially those from the early 17th-century.

Argentorati, sumptibus hæredum Lazari Zetzneri. Anno M. DC. XX., [1620] [XVI], 1474 pp. Size: 185 x 115 x 95 mm. Beautiful blind-stamped German vellum binding. Blind stamped with a plate of Emperor Karel V size 5 x 7.5 cm. on the front cover. On the back cover a plate of Johann Friedrich von Sachsen. Previous owners name written in ink on title page. Blank end-papers missing. Some slight damp stains at the bottom part of some of the pages, but overall a nice copy. Very rare. No other copies for sale. Melchior Junius was born in Wittenberg, the cradle of Lutheranism, in 1545, and spent his childhood there. In 1559 he began his secondary education at the gymnasium in Strasbourg where the head teacher was Johannes Sturm, who was to be a key influence on Junius’s vocation, as we shall see presently. In 1566 he entered the University of Strasbourg. After travelling around Europe and visiting the principal universities of France, Flanders and the Low Countries, he returned to Strasbourg as a teacher of Rhetoric. Here, in 1581 he founded an Academy, of which he was the head until 1593. He devoted his life completely to the Academy and its students until his death in 1604, four years after suffering a stroke. Such a learned man as Junius owed his didactic calling to his teacher, Sturm, who was regarded as the greatest educator of the Reformed Church; in fact, the model he used, both in the school of which he was headmaster and for his own teaching methods, was the prevailing humanistic one in sixteenth century Europe. According to Morhof’s glowing eulogy of Junius in his Polyhistor … [Click Below for Full Description]

Together with the works of Ptolemy and Solinus, Strabo's "Geography" constitutes the first attempt at a unified treatise of geographical knowledge. Strabo had visited Egypt and sailed up the Nile in 25 BC. Even in the introductory chapters, the author provides important details on the Arabian Peninsula: "Adjoining the Ethiopians, a needy and nomad race, is Arabia: one part of which is distinguished above all other lands by the title of Felix [i.e., Hedjaz and Nejd-ed-Ared], and the other, though not dignified by that name, is both generally believed and also said to be pre-eminently blessed. [Spanish golden century literature] Espinel Adorno, Jacinto
1620. Madrid. Viuda de Alonso Martin, a costa de Domingo Gonçalez mercader de libros. 12mo, (141 x 95 mm). 6 ff., 154 ff. (wrongly numbered. 162). Elegant 18th century calf, spine flat tooled and lettered in gilt and tinted in green, boards with interlacing floral border, in very good condition. Trimmed by the binder, on a couple of occasions towards the end just touching headline, but otherwise with decent margins, else excellent.- First edition of this rare "pastoral" novel: a genre or mode of literature in vogue in the early 17thcentury in Spain. Rare, no copy has ever appeared at auction according to RBH; institutionally only two copies in Spain (Biblioteca Nacional and Fundacion Lazaro Galdiano), according to Worldcat, there are two further copies at the British Library and the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek. [Click Below for Full Description]

MATTIOLI, Pietro Andrea and Antoine DU PINET (transl.).
Les commentaires de M.P. André Matthiolus, medicin Senois, sur les six livres de Pedacius Dioscoride Anazarbéen de la matiere medicinale.Lyon, Pierre Rigaud, 1620. Folio. With the title-page printed in red and black, a woodcut author's portrait (repeated on the last page) and 1478 woodcuts in text. Early 20th-century(?) half sheepskin parchment. [116], 606, [33] pp. Reissue of the 1619 edition of Antoine Du Pinet's French translation of the chief work of the Italian phycisian and botanist Pietro Andrea Mattioli (1501-1577), "an excellent botanist and a renowned physician" (Hunt). The book, first published in Latin in 1554 and French in 1566, is presented as a commentary on Dioscorides's De materia medica, but the title doesn't do justice to the book, for the long commentaries contain an account of all the plants known to Mattioli. It includes a certain number of new plants he found himself, but most of the species that he described for the first time, were communicated to him by others. Besides medical plants the book also contains short zoological chapters and a chapter on distillation. The success of the work was phenomenal and it is said that 32,000 copies of the early editions were sold. With the art nouveau bookplate of the Horticultural Society of New York on paste-down. With some faint marginal water stains, some leaves slightly creased, and a few small spots; a good copy. Krivatsy 7571; Nissen, BBI 1312; cf. Arber, pp. 92-97; French vernacular books 37144-37158; this edition not in Hunt; Wellcome.

ROYE, Jean de
Paris: Imprimée sur le vray original, 1620. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Louis XI of France was the King of France during the mid-15th-century and was best known for his intense political conspiracies. One of his most important military events was battle and subsequent isolation of Charles the Bold, the Duke of Burgundy, in which Louis signed the Treaty of Picquigny ending the Hundred Years' War - a pact that ultimately ended the dukes of Burgundy dynasty. The life of Louis XI is best portrayed by French author Jean de Roye in his "Chronicle of Louis XI". De Roye was a 15th-century chronicler whose 'History' encompasses the entirety of Louis XI's reign.
