GRASSI, Orazio]
Marci Naccarini, Perugia, 1619. Engraved title vignette of one of the 1618 comets in the constellation of Libra, with large historiated initials and text diagrams. Antique calf in a contemporary style with gilt borders and gilt- ornamented spine; overall in superb condition. First edition of Grassi's extraordinarily important and bitter attack on Galileo's theory of the nature of comets, later inspiring Il Saggiatore. The scientists' famous dispute started the prior year with Grassi's De tribus cometis, which Galileo (using the alias of his assistant Guiducci) followed up with his provocative Discorso della comete (1619). Grassi responded (under the pseudonym Lothario Sarsi) with this publication of Libra astronomica, in which he strongly defends the ideas of Tycho Brahe and the Jesuits. Galileo went on to publish his polemic and rhetorical masterpiece, Il Saggiatore, as a direct reply to this work.Grassi (1583-1654) was a Jesuit mathematician who taught at the Collegio Romano. This controversy ruined his relationship with Galileo, and earned his adversary the ire of the entire Collegio Romano - a major factor in his later difficulties with the Inquisition. CHERUBIN d'Orléans, Capuchin.
Exceptional copy in contemporary red morocco of "the most exhaustive treatise on lens making in the seventeenth century. It is a six-hundred folio page long, comprehensive, cogently-argued treatise on telescope making. It contains an impressive amount of theoretical and practical, first-hand information on all of its facets - from explanations of the telescope's working principles, to descriptions of lens grinding and polishing, to rules for the right distances between lenses, to methods to find the right apertures, to descriptions of the shapes and articulations of the wooden parts and bolts and screws needed to properly point a telescope to the skies, to the construction of tubes, and so on and so forth." (Albert et al, The origins of the telescope, pp. 289-291).

"The first, shorter part of the book is devoted to the theory of vision, including the optical properties of the main parts of the eye. It follows Kepler's account but complements it with views taken from the Jesuit Christopher Scheiner's Oculus (1619) and Rosa ursine (1632). The second part, which dedicates more than one hundred pages to the theory of the telescope, pervasively shows the deep influence of Kepler's Dioptrice. The basic notions and axioms come from Kepler, including the approximate refraction law for angles of incidence no greater than 30º ... (pp. 8 & 25). To Kepler's results about the focus of convex lenses and meniscus, d'Orleans adds a few new results, but not a full treatment of the problem. He takes into consideration only the focus of radiation parallel … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bible. Polyglot. 1619
Aureliae Allobrogum [Geneva]: Apud Petrum de la Roviere, 1619. Folio (36 cm; 13.5"). 2 vols. I: [5 of 12] ff., 183, [1], 283, [1], 84, 203, [1 (blank)] pp. II: [4] ff., 271, [1 (blank)] pp., 167, [1] pp., [20] ff., [2] ff., 70 pp., [6] ff. A later printing of the text of the Hebrew O.T. and the Greek N.T. as edited by Benito Arias Montano for the Royal Antwerp Polyglot. The Hebrew and Greek texts are printed in double columns, with interlinear Latin translation. Following the N.T. are several but not all of the O.T. Apocrypha; included are additions to Daniel (!), in Hebrew with interlinear Latin. After the O.T. Apocrypha is "Romana corretiones in Latinis Bibliis editionis vulgatae iussu Sixti V. pontificis . . . loca insigniora observata & denuo aucta a Francisco luca Brugensi." Provenance: Note at front of vol. I detailing that these volumes were owned successively by Rev. Samuel Danforth (1627–74) of Roxbury, MA and the Rev. John Danforth (1652–1730) of Dorchester, MA. Their respective signatures appear at the top of the index of vol. II ("Index rerum et senteniarum Veteris ac Novi Testamenti"). Samuel, notably, was a Puritan minister, preacher, poet, and astronomer, and associate of the Rev. John Eliot. Ex–Andover Newton Theological. => The number of Bibles that can be traced to Puritan ministers and that are not in institutional collections is very, very small. This is a distressed copy with a great provenance, priced for its faults. Darlow & Moule 4667 (Greek N.T.); 5117 (Hebrew O.T.). 19th-century acid-stained sheep in the Spanish style.
