[Click Below for Full Description]

1617. XVIII secolo.. Piccolo album oblungo (mm. 88 x 143), cartonato muto settecentesco. London 1617: Robert Barker, 1617. CONDITION: THERE IS A STORY BEHIND EVERY BLEMISH! Bible leaf collectors know that some leaves are hard to look at and others look as new as the day they left the printing press. The condition of a particular leaf reflects its history and is not an indication of its actual value. Perfect leaves are ones that have seen little or no use over the centuries in contrast to those that are scarred by the ravages of time. Unblemished leaves are unloved leaves because they have had little contact with sinners. Imperfect leaves tell a story. Some are torn and ripped and worn away by excessive use while others have burns or worm holes and still others are water stained by flood and sometimes even tears. Each ugly mark or stain is in fact a beautiful witness to the Word of God, which, "liveth and abideth forever." We offer Bible leaves as we acquire them letting their condition speak for themselves. 1617. Paris. Widow of Matias Guillemot. 8vo, (168 x 103 mm). 7 ff., portrait, 879, 2 ff. Engraved title and portrait plate, without errata, perhaps an earlier issue. 19th century calf, blind-tooled fillets on boards and spine, faux raised bands to spine, red lettering label, lightly browned. A few old brown ink pen scratches to title and foremargin and lower margins repaired close to plate impression, some old ink marginalia and underscoring to Book 1, mostly in French, some spotting and old damp staining at front and rear.- First edition, the first novel to be set in Spanish America, an extremely rare work; the novel action largely takes place in 16thcentury Chile and also recounts visits to Mexico, Peru and a circumnavigation of the globe with Magellan. The literary genre has been categorized as the Byzantine and the picaresque, both popular genres in Spain in the 17thcentury. The Historia “narrates the adventures of several characters, their relationships with one another, and their travels throughout the world… Though the text has received some historical criticism by George Ticknor, José Toribio Medina… and Arsenio Pacheco-Ranzans, it has not been studied in depth, nor has it been published as a modern critical edition. The purpose of this thesis is twofold. It presents a modernized and annotated edition of the Historia tragicómica de don Henrique de Castro and an overall study of Loubayssin de la Marca’s principal works. Leipzig: 1617. Strigenitz, Gregor. Leipzig: Bey Abraham Lamberg, Jn vorlegung Bartholomaei Voigts, 1617. A very rare early Lutheran-Reformation publication by early Lutheran theologian Gregor Strigenitz (b1548-d1603).Strigenitz may be considered one of the most important Lutheran theologians from the second half of the 16th century. His works include a large many volume publication of a commentary regarding the Old and New Testaments, occasional sermons, homiletics, and more. He occupied a prominent early position in the newly manifesting art of Lutheran Biblical Interpretation. Much like Luther he developed a sermon style influenced by high spiritual rhetorical aptitude, pious erudition, pastoral practical alignment, narrative skill and a fondness for examples through spiritual songs. His works echo the Reformation messages of the times and are very scarce in any state or collection. Ornate tooled pigskin binding, thick raised bands to the spine, as shown; measures 13" x 8" x 4". Binding with some exposure at the edges, light cracking at the hinges and joints but binding holding firm. Includes a plethora of in text large woodcuts. Text in fraktur, with ornate capital and chapter headings; light soiling and wear but overall great shape. Paginates complete at (12), 1032, (8). Only two known copies via Worldcat, both held in German libraries. Good luck! [Attributes: First Edition]
