Josef (Convento de San José) in Ávila, errichten. Ana de Jesús, translated into English as Ann of Jesus, also known as Ann Lobera, was a Spanish Discalced Carmelite nun and writer. She was a close companion of St. Teresa of Avila, foundress of the Carmelite reform and served to establish new monasteries of the Order throughout Europe. KEPLER, Johannes.
Linz: Hans Blanck, 1616. First edition, a considerably revised, rearranged and augmented version of Kepler's Nova Stereometria published the year before, a work which is "generally regarded as one of the significant works in the prehistory of the calculus" (Gingerich in DSB). "Desiring to outfit his new household with the produce of a particularly good wine harvest, Kepler installed some casks in his house. When he discovered that the wine merchant measured only the diagonal length of the barrels, ignoring their shape, Kepler set about computing their actual volumes. Abandoning the classical Archimedean procedures, he adopted a less rigorous but productive scheme in which he considered that the figures were composed of an infinite number of thin circular laminae or other cross sections. Captivated by the task, he extended it to other shapes, including the torus" (DSB). The Messekunst is not a simple translation of the Nova stereometria. The material is substantially reorganized, the Theorem-proof structure of the earlier work replaced by a more informal approach (that structure had proved unsuitable for a practical audience and sales of the Nova stereometria were disappointing). Most importantly, the Messekunst contains material not present in Nova stereometria: first, the solution to the difficult problem of finding the volume of wine in a partly empty barrel, which had been mentioned but not solved at the end of the earlier work; second, the explanation of the effectiveness of the 'gauging rod' used by Austrian wine merchants to measure the volume of their barrels, which … [Click Below for Full Description]

Known Antique 1616 HOLY BIBLE BINDING Leather Complete "Danish?" Rough Shape.. THIS COULD BE AN "ONLY EXAMPLE IN THE WORLD" TYPE ITEM! We have no clue what language this bible is. We tried running some of the words through the internet. Some words came back as possibly Danish. Regardless we don't know no. We couldn't find an exact match of any bible on the internet and gave up. That being said, the Bible is in rough shape. It's totally complete, but the outside has been fixed multiple times. There's mending/stitching holding it together. The leather is breaking apart in some place, but as an entirety it's completely. There's writing in ink all over the inside pages from fountain pens and on picture number #9 someone underlined the date "1616" with a ball point blue ink pen (We didn't do that!) IF YOU KNOW WHAT BIBLE THIS IS PLEASE EMAIL US AND LET US KNOW. WE WOULD LOVE TO KNOW! All the dimensions are in the pictures! PLEASE LOOK AT ALL THE PICTURES BEFORE BIDDING!!! ONE DAY HANDLING!!!! The Geneva Bible followed the Great Bible of 1539, the first authorised Bible in English, which was the authorized Bible of the Church of England. During the reign of Queen Mary I of England (1553-58), a number of Protestant scholars fled from England to Geneva, Switzerland, which was then ruled as a republic in which John Calvin and, later, Theodore Beza, provided the primary spiritual and theological leadership. Among these scholars was William Whittingham, who supervised the translation now known as the Geneva Bible, in collaboration with Myles Coverdale, Christopher Goodman, Anthony Gilby, Thomas Sampson, and William Cole; several of this group later became prominent figures in the Vestments controversy. Whittingham was directly responsible for the New Testament, which was complete and published in 1557,[6] while Gilby oversaw the Old Testament. The first full edition of this Bible, with a further revised New Testament, appeared in 1560,[6] but it was not printed in England until 1575 (New Testament[6]) and 1576 (complete Bible[6]). Scarce: ours is apparently the only copy in the market. ¶ Nicholas Fuller (c.1557-1623), of Oxford, "the most admired critic of his time" (Athenae Oxonienses), was an English Hebraist and theologian whose skill in Semitic languages was recognized by his contemporaries including Buxtorf. Yet few of Fuller's works were published during his lifetime. His "Miscellaneorum theologicorum," a.k.a. "Miscellaneorum sacrorum libri," was reprinted several times, and contains a series of comments on difficult or controversial biblical texts. The present edition contains an entirely new book (Lib. IV) and Fuller's autobiographical preface, upon which the entry in the Athenae Oxonienses is based. ¶ Books 1-3 of the "Miscellaneorum" were first published at Heidelberg in … [Click Below for Full Description]

BARLOW, William
London: Edward Griffin for Timothy Barlow, 1616. First edition, very rare, and complete with the errata leaf, containing Barlow's fundamental discovery, the directional properties of the compass-needle, as well as the first use of the English words magnetism and magneticall (OED). The only other complete copy sold at auction since the Honeyman sale in 1978 was the Horblit-Streeter copy (Christie's NY, 16 April 2007, $36000 - "one diagram and some headlines cropped"). This is a large copy with no absolutely cropping. Barlow "designed navigating instruments, polar charts, and compasses. He explained the difference between iron and steel needles; improved the needle's shape; made an easily removable card so the needle could be easily remagnetized; gave instructions as to the best method of remagnetizing the needle by stroking it with the lodestone three or four times from the needle's center to the ends, using the north end of the lodestone for the needle's north end, and the south for the south. He also designed an azimuth compass for measuring the variations which happened to be an improvement on the instrument designed by Norman and Borough; it was a compass with sights and a verge ring marked in degrees, the first such compass, and was to be used by grateful seamen for over two hundred years" (Gurney, Compass, a Story of Exploration and Innovation, New York (2004), p. 64). Barlow's interest in magnetism, which had begun some forty years before the publication of this book, involved him in relations with William Gilbert (1540-1603). Gilbert's 'De magnete' (1600), which was … [Click Below for Full Description]
