         THE WORKES OF BENJAMIN JONSON

London: William Stansby, 1616. First Folio Edition. Lacks title page; pagination begins at page 3 with the first page of Every Man in His Humour, continuing to page 1012; lacks the two final leaves that contain three pages of the text of the final Masque, The Golden Age Restored. Page 3 has a long longitudinal tear that removes 1/4" of the page (not affecting the text), and a small hole (which does remove a portion of the text on the verso). One long closed tear to page 885/886. In a late-18th century calf binding, with five raised bands, gilt spine decoration and leather spine label. Recased later, with modern endpapers. Boards rubbed; hinges starting, with a short crack to bottom of front hinge at spine; minor soiling throughout. Extremely scarce. There are watermarks on a significant number of the pages. The watermarks are as follows: a two handled vase with orbs above making a cross shape (pp. 499); a two handled vase with orbs above making a triangle (pp. 215); a one handed vase with looping orbs (pp. 891). The page numbers listed above are example pages, not the only pages. While not every individual page was tested, they are grouped in batches, so we believe this to be all of them. The first Jonson folio of 1616, printed and published by William Stansby and sold through bookseller Richard Meighen, contained nine plays, all previously published, plus two works of non-dramatic poetry, thirteen masques, and six "entertainments." The folio collections of Ben Jonson's works published in the seventeenth century were crucial developments in the publication of English literature and English Renaissance drama. This collection served as a precedent for other play collections that followed - most notably the First Folio of Shakespeare's plays in 1623, but also the first Beaumont and Fletcher folio of 1647, and other collections.-Consignment. JG. Shelved in Case 4. Dupont.

Freiberg, Melchior Hoffmann, [1616]. - (48) SS. Hand. VD 17, 125:034515F.

Moreover, they are botanically accurate, with separate details of flowers and fruit frequently shown" (ibid). The success of De Purpura earned Colonna an early appointment to the Accademia dei Lincei, founded in Rome in 1603. Provenance: unidentified collector's mark, Dr R in a square (not in Lugt); purchased from Hellmuth Wallach, 1957. Callot's prints, made after the theatrical spectacles designed by Giulio Parigi, capture the extravagance of the 1616 Florence carnival. The celebrations consisted of a triumphal procession, a mock battle, a ballet on horseback and a tournament in the Piazza Santa Croce, on Shrove Tuesday, 12thFebruary.The premise was the battle between Indamoro, the King of Narsinga (played by Cosimo II) and Gradamento, King of Melinda (played by Lorenzo, Cosimo's brother) for the love of the Queen of India, represented by a gold statue. Callot's etchings, which show the various phases of the combat, were part of the souvenir booklet written by the poet Andrea Salvadori and published by Zandri Pignoni in Florence in 1616. The first print represents chariots and characters in costume for the horse ballet and tournament "War of Love". The second shows the parade in the Amphitheater, and entry of the floats representing Africa and Asia. The third, also in the amphitheater, depicts the battles of the infantries. Lieure 169-171.          Minus cognitarum stirpium aliquot, ac etiam rariorum nostro coelo orientium item de Aquatilibus aliisque nonnullis Animalibus - De Purpura ab Animali tetaceo fusa

Rome: Jacob Mascardi, 1616. 4 parts in one volume, 4to (218 x 150 mm). Half-title. 3 engraved titles with the Colonna arms and putti, 152 full-page etched plates, most of plants, the remainder of shells, marine life, insects and a hippopotamus. Borders of typographical ornament. Contemporary vellum, manuscript F on upper cover, manuscript title on spine; cloth slipcase. Provenance: Bard Doctoris Medici (early manuscript ex libris on pastedown); purchased from H.P. Kraus, 1963. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. Second edition of parts 1-2 (first published in 1606), first edition of the Pars Altera and De Purpura. Colonna enhanced both the precision of his botanical science and the art of his depictions by being the first to choose the copper plate over the woodblock. He achieved far greater detail, and as Blunt and Stearn note, the plates, "unpretentious though they are have considerable charm" (p.100). The plates are "executed in pure etching ... Moreover, they are botanically accurate, with separate details of flowers and fruit frequently shown" (ibid). The success of De Purpura earned Colonna an early appointment to the Accademia dei Lincei, founded in Rome in 1603. Blunt and Stearn, pp.100-101; Brunet II:172-3; Nissen BBI 385; Nissen ZBI 927 (Purpura); Pritzel 1823. From the Collection of Arthur & Charlotte Vershbow.

The Surveyor : in Foure Bookes

London : Printed by W : Stansby for, W : Burre, 1616. Hardcover. Good. Folio, 29 cm. First edition of "the first comprehensive English textbook on Survey" (Singer, History of Technology, III, p. 541). Engraved title page, [10], 157, 152-175, 172-181, 186-228 pp. Contemporary limp vellum. Creasing and soiling to vellum. Rehinged. Marginal soiling and tanning. Lacks portrait of Rathborne and Prince Charles. O3 is a cancel, fifth line of verso has "58 4/5".
The diagram on p 160 is believed to have inspired the configuration of the Pilgrim Land Survey of Cape Cod conducted in 1636. William Brewster carried a copy of the Surveyor with him on the Mayflower.
For historians of surveying, Rathborne's Surveryor, presents the "first complete picture of a seventeenth century surveyor at work and of his instruments. The frontispiece has a structure supported by two allegorical figures of Arithmetica and Geometria surmounted by celestial and terrestrial globes. The upper vignette depicts an experienced surveyor trampling "fools and dunces underfoot." The Surveyor was one of the first books to strongly advocate the use of mathematics in survey projects. Rathborne presented the basic principles of geometry and discussed their applications in surveying. He advocated use of the recently introduced decimal arithmetic of Simon Stevin (1585) and urged the employ of the "new pocket" tables of logarithms." John French (1616-1657) was a surgeon in the British army. With 18th-century(?) manuscript notes. There are no endleaves at the front and those at the back have not been pasted down. The leather of the turn-ins has badly browned the margins of the title-page, the book is slightly browned throughout and there are mostly marginal tears on a half dozen leaves, but otherwise in good condition. The binding is slightly rubbed, and cracked at the hinges, and the clasps and most of the strap fastenings are gone. A thorough and well-illustrated standard work on distillation.

Nuevos discursos de la gineta de España

First edition. Among the rarest works on the Gineta of Spain, the riding style derived from the North Africans, and which became a distinctive characteristic of Iberian horsemanship. Fernandez de Andrada wrote three works regarding horsemanship, the first was "De la Naturaleza del cavallo", the second "Libro de la Gineta de España", and this, his last, and best: "indudablemente la más apreciada de las tres" (Marqués de la Torrecilla). This book is also regarded as important for the history of bullfighting on horse (third part), in which the author, among other things, praises bullfighting with a 'rejón' which had been introduced recently instead of the traditional spear. In this treatise, the author dedicates a chapter on the description of the "cabezon", and it´s importance for taming the colt, without harming or causing any injuries. According to The Biographical of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (London 1843) Pedro Fernández de Andrada was 'a native of Seville, famous for his knowledge of breeding, rearing and treating horses, as well as the proper mode of mounting them'. Extremely rare, we could only trace 4 institutional copies, none of them in public libraries in the United States, further, we could trace no copies having sold in the market in recent times.          Cristo cade con la croce

1616 - Acquaforte, 1616 circa, firmata in lastra, sulla sinistra in basso "Bellange Eques in incide". Meraviglioso e rarissimo capolavoro dell'arte grafica. Non in perfetto stato conservativo. Etching, 1616 circa, signed on plate, left in the image "Bellange Eques in incide" lettered along the bottom "languores nostro ipse tulit, et dolores nostros, ipse portauit et nos potauimos, eum quasi leprosum et percussum a Deo et humiliatum: Ipse autem vulnerat, est propter iniquitates nostras, adtrotus est propter scelera disciplina pacis nostrae super eum, et livore eius. Sancti sumus" . A good example, strong impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed at margins, some expert repairs, otherwise in good condition. Christ Carrying the Cross, is based in part on a celebrated engraving by Martin Schongauer of a century earlier. The cut-off figure of a woman at the lower edge of the plate draws the viewer into the picture. A crowd of more than 50 figures is massed together in a compressed and confusing space that heightens the drama of the scene. These figures progress toward Golgotha in the top left corner and invite us to follow. Christ, on the other hand, stares out of the composition to confront the viewer directly. To heighten the drama, Bellange exploits the etching medium. His complex pattern of crosshatching, achieved by immersing the plate many times in the acid while masking the lighter passages, creates an agitated surface that enhances the tension inherent in Christ's ordeal. Fine etched stippling and crosshatching combine to model the flesh of the figures and their garments; engraving further refines the shading. The most startling technical innovation is the use of the burnisher to erase the etching around Christ's face, making it appear to radiate from within. Along the bottom, two verses from Isaiah (53, 4-5) : "Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed" Extremely rare work, not in perfect condition but still amazing. First edition and a fine set bound in contemporary red morocco with the arms of Louis Boucherat (1616-99), Chancellor of France from 1685-99, succeeding Le Tellier and serving under Louis XIV. Régis (1632--1707), was one of the principal expositors of Cartesian natural philosophy and this is his most important book on the subject. After finishing his classical studies in La Salvetat de Blanquefort, near Agen, Régis came to Paris, and studied under Rohault at the Sorbonne. Régis became a warm admirer and partisan of the philosophy of Descartes. He was then sent by Rohault to spread the doctrine, teaching with great success the principles of Cartesianism at Toulouse (1665), Aigues-Mortes, Montpellier (1671), and in Nicolas Lemery's laboratory in Paris (1680). He was elected a member of the Academy of Sciences in 1699. The present work presents the principles of Cartesian philosophy in a systematic way. Fine and handsome set. Bookplate of l'Abbé J.A.          Stirpium Historiae Pemptades sex Sive Libri XXX.

1616. DODOENS, Rembert. Stirpium historiae pemptades sex sive Libri XXX. [xvi], 872, [66] pp. Illustrated with an engraved allegorical title (included in pagination), ca. 1330 botanical woodcuts after Pieter van der Borcht. Folio, 348 x 214 mm, bound in contemporary Dutch dark brown calf, sides paneled with double gilt fillet, spine compartments similarly paneled and with gilt lozenge ornament, author's name gilt-lettered in second compartment. Antwerp: Plantin-Moretus, 1616. Definitive Edition of Dodoens' most important work, containing Dodoens' corrections and additions plus 32 van der Borcht woodcuts not in the first edition of 1583. Bringing together material from several of his earlier works, including the popular Cruydeboeck (1554), the present work was Dodoens' most comprehensive botanical treatise. Considered the first great Flemish botanist, Dodoens (1518-1585) modeled his work after Fuchs, but possessed a superior grasp of plant structure. The woodcuts of this edition comprise the full suite of botanical illustrations commissioned by Christopher Plantin from the prolific and gifted Flemish artist Pieter van der Borcht (1545-1608) a pupil of Pieter Brueghel the Elder. Van der Borcht had fled his native Mecheln after its destruction by the troops of the Duke of Alba in 1572, taking refuge in Antwerp. A series of albums containing van der Borcht's exceptionally-detailed watercolours survives in the Staatsbibliothek Berlin. Plantin issued the woodcuts in a somewhat simplified manner, focusing on the essential parts of the plant; they are nonetheless of very high quality; Nissen (p. 63) comments that while the scientific accuracy of the cuts is not surprising given the learned editors who supervised their production, the woodcuts, which exhibit some unmistakably Baroque stylistic elements, are also artistically excellent, and in certain aspects, superior to those of Fuchs. The engraved title is a reworking of the plate used for the 1601 edition of Clusius' Rariorum plantarum historia; it shows the musing figures of Adam, Solomon, Theophrastus and Dioscorides resting on a flower-bedecked architectural structure. A few sheets slightly browned, but a fine, tall and wide-margined copy of this important botanical work, in its original Dutch binding. Hunt 201. Nissen, BBI 517. Stafleu & Cowan 1489. Voet, The Plantin Press 1101.

Magneticall Aduertisements: or divers pertinent obseruations, and approued experiments concerning the nature and properties of the Load-stone . most needfull for practise, of trauelling, or framing of Instruments fit for Trauellers both by Sea and Land.

Edward Griffin for Timothy Barlow 1616 - FIRST EDITION, printer's woodcut device on title (McKerrow 380), woodcut diagrams and illustrations in the text, 2 full-page, title soiled and with a very small hole and a small fragment missing from the top outer corner, pen trials and small ink stain, early repair in the margin of B3 and D2, occasional damp-staining and soiling, pp. [xvi], 86, [2, letter from William Gilbert to the author], [1, Errata], 4to, 19th-century calf, sides panelled in gilt, rebacked, extremities rubbed, corners lightly scuffed, contemporary inscription with flourish on verso of title 'Mr. Marshall his book', initial P added before signature letter B (= Philip Bliss, 1787-1857), blind stamp of the Royal Institution on the title, and their stamp in gilt on the upper cover. Rare, containing Barlow's fundamental discovery, the directional properties of the compass-needle. In this book the English word magnetism (and also magneticall) is used for the first time (OED). The only other complete copy sold at auction since the Honeyman sale in 1978 was the Horblit-Streeter copy (sold Christie's New York, 16 April 2007, $36,000 – "one diagram and some headlines cropped"). This is a large copy with no cropping. Barlow 'designed navigating instruments, polar charts, and compasses. He explained the difference between iron and steel needles; improved the needle's shape; made an easily removable card so the needle could be easily remagnetized; gave instructions as to the best method of remagnetizing the needle by stroking it with the lodestone three or four times from the needle's center to the ends, using the north end of the lodestone for the needle's north end, and the south for the south. He also designed an azimuth compass for measuring the variations which happened to be an improvement on the instrument designed by Norman and Borough; it was a compass with sights and a verge ring marked in degrees, the first such compass, and was to be used by grateful seamen for over two hundred years' (Gurney, Compass, a Story of Exploration and Innovation, New York (2004), p. 64). Before the text is an inserted leaf with a biographical notice of Barlow (?by Bliss), and the note 'of Thorpe' - i.e. bought from the bookseller Thomas Thorpe (1791-1851). The 'P'B is followed by the numerals 44, probably indicationg the year the book was acquired, and below to the let are the letters 'Pa', possibly being a price code.
