Die Kronentaube. Columba coronata. = Lithographische Tafel No. 83 aus Goldfuß' Werk: Naturhistorischer Atlas. Erschienen in 23 Lieferungen zwischen 1824 und 1842

Gr.-Folio (48 x 60 cm). Altkolorierte, teils gehöhte Lithographie (Auge) auf Whatman-Papier. Unbeschnittenes Blatt. Einwandfreies Exemplar. Erste Ausgabe. - Nissen, ZBI 1617.

Vita R.P. Iosephi Anchieta Societatis Iesu sacerdotis in Brasilia defuncti

A fundamental and early work on Brazilian Jesuit Missions; one of the first Jesuit Priests to work in Brazil. 1617. Cologne. Johannes Kinchium. In 12vo (131 mm x 75 mm). 1 [blank] + 2 ff. + 427 [428] + 1 ff. + 1 [blank]. Contemporary or near contemporary vellum, ties as fragments, gently soiled. A fine copy, some leaves browned as expected. Although printed the same year as the Lyon edition, Leclerc states that this is the second edition; it could also be a second issue. Father Anchieta (1534 ? 1597) was a Canarian Jesuit Priest and writer; after short studies in Portugal, and being only 19 years old, he was selected to travel to the Jesuit missions in Brazil, accompanying Duarte da Costa. Before making shore they shipwrecked, but still Anchieta was able to make shore at Sao Vicente, which allowed him to have contact with the Tapuia Indians who were natives of the region. Furthermore, he is considered as one of the founders of Sao Paulo, in 1554, and Rio de Janeiro, in 1565 (after the defeat of the French settlers). His labor in the catechesis and conversion of the Indians into the Catholic faith ?along with Nóbrega-, was crucial to the establishment of a colonial settlement in the country. The work is ?based on the manuscript by Father Pedro Rodrigues, visiting Father to Angola and Brazil. This manuscript was unpublished at the time, but several copies were in circulation and served as the basis for all the biographies of Anchieta.? Borba de Moraes, 99. Rodriguez, 379. Leclerc, 1558.

        La Gerusalemme liberata

Genoa: Appresso Giuseppe Pavoni, 1617. Full Calf. Near Fine+. Folio in 8s: [16],255,[1],71,[1],36,[4]pp, with two distinctly different engraved title pages (the first with portrait of Carlo Emanuello de Savoy, Tasso's patron, to whom this book is dedicated; the other with portrait of Tasso above a harbor view, perhaps of Venice or Genoa); 20 full-page plates in fine impressions, one opposite the opening of each canto, engraved by Camillo Cungi after drawings by Bernardo Castello; woodcut head- and tail-pieces and historiated initials; the "Argomento" at the head of each canto within elaborate ornamental frame. Beautifully bound by Fitterer in period-style mottled calf, spine in six compartments, gilt-ruled raised bands, red morocco lettering piece gilt, edges speckled red, renewed hand-marbled end papers. An excellent example in a beautiful binding, pages and plates with occasional stain and very lightly scattered spotting but otherwise crisp and clean. Brunet V 666. Mortimer-Harvard, Italian, 494 (referenced in the description of 1590 edition). & Third illustrated edition, following the Genoa of 1590, in quarto, and Genoa edition of 1604, in duodecimo with small woodcuts. (The first complete unillustrated editions of Tasso's epic poem were published in Parma and in Ferrara, in 1581.) Text and commentary in this edition, by Scipion Gentili and Giulio Guastavini, are from the 1590 edition, which was also illustrated by Castello. Bernardo Castello’s drawings for the earlier edition were re-engraved in much larger format for this edition, producing perhaps the finest edition yet published. Gerusalemme liberata is composed of eight-line stanzas grouped into 20 ottava rima cantos of varying length. It tells a largely mythical version of the First Crusade in which Catholic knights, led by Godfrey of Bouillon, battle Muslims for control of Jerusalem. (Like other works of the period that portray conflicts between Christians and Muslims, Gerusalemme liberata had a topical resonance, as the Ottoman Empire was advancing through Eastern Europe.) Alternating with episodes of epic battles are romance adventures, placing the poem in the Renaissance tradition of the Italian romantic epic poem. Tasso frequently borrows plot elements and character types from Ariosto's Orlando furioso, while its scenes of siege and warfare were inspired partly by the classical epics of Homer and Virgil. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

SCARCE FIRST EDITION REGARDED AS ONE OF THE MOST OUTSTANDING WORKS OF ITS KIND, ONE OF THE GREATEST CONTEMPORARY EUROPEAN ACCOUNTS OF ITS PERIOD AND “A VALUABLE AND MUCH ESTEEMED WORK.” - Lowndes. Moryson,1566-1630, was one of the period’s most accomplished travellers. "'from his tender youth, he had a great desire to see foreign countries', and in 1589 he obtained a license to travel... On 1 May 1591 he took ship at Leigh, near Southend, and for the greater part of the six years following wandered about Europe. At the end of 1591 he reached Prague, where he dreamt of his father's death on the day of the event. The news was confirmed at Nuremberg, and after a year's leisurely tour through Germany he retraced his steps to the Low Countries in order to dispose of his modest patrimony. On the 7th of January, 1593, he entered himself as a student at Leyden University. He subsequently passed through Denmark and Poland to Vienna, and thence by way of Pontena and Chiusa into Italy in October 1593. After visiting Naples, he thoroughly explored Rome, where he paid visits to Cardinals Allen and Bellarmine. The former gave him every facility for viewing the antiquities. The cities of North Italy occupied him from April 1594 to the beginning of 1595. In the early spring of 1595 he had an interview with Theodore Beza at Geneva, and journeying hurriedly through France, caught a glimpse of Henri IV at Fontainebleau, and landed at Dover on the 13th of May in 1595. 0n the 8th of December of the same year Moryson started on a second journey, setting sail for Flushing. A younger brother, Henry, bore him company. Passing through Germany to Venice, they went, at the end of April 1596, by sea to Joppa, spent the first fortnight of June at Jerusalem, and thence went by Tripoli and Aleppo to Antioch. At Beilan, a neighboring village, Henry Moryson died on the 4th of July in 1596 at the age of 27 years. Fynes afterwards made for Constantinople, where the English ambassador, Edward Barton [, hospitably entertained him. He finally reached London by way of Venice and Stade on the 10th of July,1597. In April 1598 Moryson visited Scotland, but soon came home, and spent some time in the autumn with his sisters, Faith Mussendyne and Jane, wife of George Allington, of the pipe office. At the time his brother Richard was taking an active part in the government of Ireland, and strongly recommended him to seek employment there. On the 13th he reached Dundalk, where his brother was governor; on the same day George Cranmer, the chief secretary of Sir Charles Blount, the lord-deputy, was killed at Carlingford, and Moryson was at once appointed to his place. He found his new master all that he could wish, aided him in his efforts to suppress Tyrone's rebellion, and remained through life a devoted admirer. After Lord Devonshire's death in 1606, Moryson had spent three years in making an abstract of the history of the twelve countries which he had visited, but his manuscript proved so bulky that with a consideration rare in authors he destroyed it, and turned his attention to a briefer record of his experiences of travel. The first part supplies a journal of his travels through Europe, Scotland, and Ireland, with plans of the chief cities, 'the rates of hiring coaches and horses from place to place with each day's expenses for diet, horse-meat, and the like. The second part is a valuable history of Tyrone's rebellion, with documents of state. The third part consists of essays on travel, geography, and national costume, character, religion, and constitutional practice. Moryson is a sober and truthful writer. He delights in statistics respecting the mileage of his daily journeys and the varieties in the values of the coins he encountered. His descriptions of the inns in which he lodged, of the costume and the food of the countries visited, render his work invaluable to the social historian." -DNB. STC 18205 (description of pts. in Roman). Alden 617/109 ‘.a Spaniard is mentioned who, having contracted syphilis, went to America to learn its cure ‘from those who first infected the Spaniards therewith’; tobacco is also mentioned’. Lowndes 1621 ‘A valuable and much esteemed work’. Blackmer 1159.

ADVERTIMIENTOS A V. MAGESTAD, TOCANTS AL GOVIERNO DE GALERAS, Y OTROS AUISOS DE JUAN JACOBO LOCADELO, VASSALL DE VUESTRA MAGESTAD

Madrid: Por la viuda de Alonso Martini, 1617.. [4],34,[4] leaves plus several pen and ink illustrations. Folio. Later speckled calf, maroon gilt morocco label, spine gilt. Covers with slight wear and scuffing at extremities. Faint dampstain in lower margin. Occasional contemporary manuscript notes and marks. Overall internally clean. Very good. A comprehensive list of rules addressed to ship captains governing the proper provisioning of Spanish vessels based in Sicily and Naples, both then under Spanish rule. The text includes a bevy of rules, expense guidelines, and more, and offers a fine window into the near- obsessive attention to detail that marked the administration of the Spanish military at the peak of its powers. Of particular interest are several pen and ink sketches that include tools, a ship in dry dock, and storage bins, as well as two much larger harbor plans of Palermo and Naples. Each drawing is keyed to a printed description of the location, and shows fortifications, lookouts, and, in the case of Naples, dormitories. These are charming and well accomplished. Good evidence of the Spanish navy at work at the height of empire, with rules which certainly applied to vessels in the Americas as well. Extremely rare, and not on OCLC.

Complete Set of Napier's Bones, English, second half of 17th C

No Binding. Fine. Set is comprised of decorated boxwood case with sliding lid (including thumb groove), 10 boxwood multiplying rods and one wider rod for calculating squares and cubes, and boxwood tabulat for arranging rods. Total dimensions 9.2 x 6.8 cm. Set is complete and integral. Small hairline crack to corner of case, otherwise a very fine set. Very rare complete set of Napier's Bones in boxwood, the first modern calculating instrument, designed to facilitate multiplication and division of large numbers and first described in Napier's Rabdologie (Edinburgh 1617). Complete sets from as early as the 17th century are rare; the present set is in exceptionally fine condition, and as such represents a rare survival from the first century of their use. As was customary, the present set was designed in boxwood to fit comfortably into the pocket of the would-be mathematician. Napier's ingenious instrument consists of a series of 10 small 'bones,' each side of which presents a multiplication column for a single integer. Diagonal lines between the 'tens' and the 'units' of each number show how to carry the second digit, allowing one to multiply any number up to ten digits long (provided it contains a single integer no more than four times). To obtain the product of 9 x 14, for instance, one places rods 1 and 4 on the tabulat, and reads the result from the 9th row of the tabulat's fixed multiplier rod: 0/9 and 3/6. The solution emerges from right to left: 6 and 9+3, or 126. The instrument's wider block also allows users to quickly extract square and cube roots. Each rod here has four faces upon which are inscribed additional numerical faces, allowing the user to compute any potential combination of integers (ie 333 x 222). After Napier's death the instrument was subjected to various modifications, such as Gaspar Schott's arranging the bones on a rotatable cylinder to allow quicker setting, and its use persisted into the last decades of the 18th C. The origin of the name 'Napier's Bones' remains a bit of a mystery. Napier indicated that the rods should be made of "silver, ivory, boxwood or some similar material"; in 1667 William Leybourn claimed that the instrument's being made of ivory 'bones' naturally suggested the name. It is conceivable, however, that the appellation arose as a witty eulogy to its creator. The invention is first mentioned in a French arithmetic textbook (Nouveau epitome d' Arithmétique, 1616), giving credence to Napier's claim in the Rabdologiae that his device was "so approved of as to be already almost in common use"; he died just six weeks before its formal debut in print. In addition to his eponymous instrument, John Napier (1550-1617) is generally credited (along with the Swiss clockmaker Joost Bürgi) with the discovery of logarithms, which he had been calculating since 1590 and which he finally unveiled in the Descriptio (Edinburgh 1614) and posthumously published Constructio (1619). * DSB.IX.609-13; Baxandall & Pugh, Calculating Machines and Instruments (1975), #7; Bryden, Napier's Bones: A History and Instruction Manual (1992).

Brussels, 1617. Hardcover. Very Good. French manuscript written in brown ink in a French cursive hand, pages ruled in red, 21 lines per page. 15.3 cm x 9.5 cm, (58) pp. Bound in contemporary limp vellum with remains of green silk ties. A presentation copy with the dedicatee's name left blank. Clean and fresh, an excellent copy. Very rare manuscript user's manual for the famous terrestrial and celestial globes by the van Langren cartographic dynasty, notable as the first to employ the highly accurate star observations of the "tresfameux" Tycho Brahe - whose contribution is duly acknowledged (fol. 9v). Well into the age of print, these manuals were handwritten rather than printed because the globes which they accompanied were luxury articles and relatively few were produced, notwithstanding their importance. The celestial globes of Van Langren (1594), and later Blaeu, soon rendered Mercator's great globes obsolete. As early as 1590, the young Arnold van Langren was sent to Hven to take advantage of what was at the time the most advanced celestial observatory in Europe. "When Arnold came to Uraniborg, Tycho's plan to publish his stellar positions was already formulated, but the observations and calculations that resulted in the catalogue of 777 stars had not been completed. While Tycho could have provided Arnold van Langren with the newly calculated positions of some stars, perhaps even interim locations for most of them, it seems quite likely that he would have advised the Dutchman to await the completion of this work before beginning a globus Tychonicus. He may even have withheld his consent at this stage." (Adam Mosley, Bearing the Heavens, p. 240). Tycho's own Progymnasmata also makes reference to the visit: "Jacob Floris, citizen of Amsterdam, a great expert in the making of celestial and terrestrial Globes, having sent here his son, skilled in the construction of the same, decided to prepare a certain celestial globe following this rectification of ours of the places of the Fixed Sars, which in its certainty and skillful elaboration is about to greatly surpass those hitherto employed." The present guide directs the user in the workings of both Langren's celestial and terrestrial globes, giving both a general introduction and practical working examples in solving geodetic and astronomical problems. According to van der Krogt, the van Langren manuals are based in part on Robert Hues' Tractaet ofte Handlinge van het gebruijck der Hemelscher ende Aertscher globe (1st ed Amsterdam, 1597), and are in part original. "Among other things, van Langren makes use of a separate 'gnomon sphareicon' (sphaerical angle bar), a small instrument which makes it possible to place a perpendicular line easily on the spherical globe". On f4r Langren discusses the astronomical implcations of the recent calendar reform under Gregory XIII, while on 11r he mentions the influential mentor of Tycho, Landgrave Wilhelm of Hesse-Kassel's method of observing stars by their almucantar and azimuth - a procedure which would later become adopted as the standard method for determining stellar positions. Langren also here explains his decision to include the 32 winds by which modern navigators divide up the sky, which are apparently noted on the globe in Flemish. Despite other similar references to the recent advances of Pedro Nunes (23v), and Tycho Brahe, the present manuscript is above all a practical rather than theoretical guide to the use of the globes in understanding celestial and terrestrial mechanics. Imperative instructions - "tournez vostre Globe ainsi." "Cherchez sur le Globe le degre du Soleil." - evidently enabled the user to manipulate his globes with or without an instructor present. ......

Operum omnium theologicorum tomi quarti pars altera: praelectiones in librum prophetiarum Jeremiae, & Lamentationes complectens

Apud Iohannem Vignon, Petrum & Iacobum Chou? Geneva: Apud Iohannem Vignon, Petrum & Iacobum Chouët, 1617. Folio (34.5 cm, 13.6"). [4], 352, [10] ff. Essential to the Reformation in both legend and reality was the role that leaders like Luther, Calvin, and Melanchthon played in interpreting the Bible for its readers; yet while championing the reading of the Scriptures in the vernacular, Calvin chose to present his notes on and explanations of various books of the Bible in the language of scholars — Latin. In other words, effectively, he expected the mass of believers to rely on the intermediation of the clergy to assist them. First published by Jean Crespin in 1563 as a stand-alone text edited by Charles de Jonvilliers and Jean Budé, Calvin's Praelectiones . . . & Lamentationes is, in this edition, one of four books making up the fourth part in a seven-volume set of Calvin's works published altogether in 1617. This part contains Calvin's commentaries on Jeremiah and the Lamentations. The Latin text is printed in roman and italic with sidenotes and occasional Hebrew, and decorated with woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces. The title-page bears an anchor device like Jean Crespin's; his son-in-law and successor, Eustache Vignon (fl. 1571–89), was father of the printer here, Jean Vignon. Contemporary northern-European style vellum over paste boards single-ruled in blind, blind-stamped central cartouches, evidence of ties; soiled, spine especially, with vellum of covers rippled and worn; upper joint repaired, lower one starting, upper third of front free endpaper torn away. Ex-library with bookplate and pencilled shelfmark only; very light waterstaining on title-page and a few others, mild to moderate foxing, occasionally some blackish residue in a gutter. A letter occasionally touched or taken in one section by lower-marginal worming, greedy on only a few leaves; several more leaves holed by fallen drops of iron gall ink, taking letters on six; one index leaf with a natural paper flaw taking a letter and a numeral. One leaf tipped in (cancel?) and some corners creased/crumpled; one word in ink manuscript on three leaves. => Though part only of Calvin's Works, this stands alone.

Viertzehende Schiffart, Oder Gründliche vnd warhaffte Beschreibung desz Neuwen Engellandts einer Landschafft in Nordt Indien, eines Theils in America, vnter dem Capitein Johann Schmidt

Frankfurt: In verlegung der Hulsischen, 1617. * Church 304; Sabin 33,667 (and 82,819n); JCB I.492 no. 569; Alden-Landis II.617/137; Brunet III.370; Bibliotheca Grenvilliana I.352; Asher, p. 72; Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, “Captain John Smith,” http://www.apva.org/history/jsmith.html (1997/2000).. Rare first edition of the fourteenth part of Hulsius’s voyage anthology, a translation into German of Captain John Smith’s Description of New England (London, 1616; Church 369), which includes an early copy of Smith’s map of New England. Goodspeed (1927) claims that this part of Hulsius’s Sammlung von Sechs und Zwanzig Schiffarten, inspired by the success of the more lavish de Bry series, appears to be “one of the rarest of the Collection.” Hulsius managed to beat de Bry’s heirs to the press with an important German-language Americanum; it would appear in the Tenth Part of de Bry’s “Great Voyages” in Oppenheim the following year.A pivotal figure in the Jamestown Colony, Smith (1580-1631) had been forced to sail back to England in 1609 to care for an injury from a gunpowder accident, and was never able to return to the settlement. “In London, he actively promoted the further colonization of Virginia, but was unpopular with the Virginia Company. In April 1614, he returned to the New World in a successful voyage to the Maine and Massachusetts Bay areas, which he named New England” (APVA). “He sailed along the coast from Penobscot to Cape Cod in search of whales and mines of gold. The voyage was in most respects a failure, but it gave him an opportunity to write this tract, the general object of which is to show the advantages likely to accrue to adventurers in New England” (Church p. 852 on 1616 English ed.). The map of New England included in the Viertzehende Schiffart (identical to that which appeared in Hulsius’s parts 13—see item 60—and 20) is an accurate re-engraving of Smith’s influential original (omitting only the names in the lower corners, Smith’s title, and the verses). “The earliest thoroughly accurate map of Massachusetts Bay” (Winsor apud Church) and the first to name the region of “New England,” Smith’s map is found in nine or more states, all printed from the same plate. Hulsius made his copy from the very rare first state. When drawing his map in 1614, Smith asked Prince Charles—later, Charles I—to replace the indigenous place-names with properly “English” ones. These are included here, although places such as London and Oxford would soon be renamed by subsequent colonists (Scituate, Marshfield, etc.); only three names from Smith’s map are retained today—Cape Ann, the Charles River, and Plymouth. The plate depicting the flora and fauna of New England balances realism—a porcupine, otter, and beaver—with fantasy—a griffon? Unsigned, this engraving was not reused in the de Bry version of the text. Levinus Hulsius (1546-1606) began publishing his 26-part series of voyages in 1598. The Schiffahrt volumes were generally more modest in size and price than those issued by de Bry, and as a result, they could often be sent to the press in a more timely fashion, allowing Hulsius’s heirs to scoop the competition.

"Among other things, van Langren makes use of a separate 'gnomon sphareicon' (sphaerical angle bar), a small instrument which makes it possible to place a perpendicular line easily on the spherical globe".On f4r Langren discusses the astronomical implcations of the recent calendar reform under Gregory XIII, while on 11r he mentions the influential mentor of Tycho, Landgrave Wilhelm of Hesse-Kassel's method of observing stars by their almucantar and azimuth - a procedure which would later become adopted as the standard method for determining stellar positions. Imperative instructions - "tournez vostre Globe ainsi." "Cherchez sur le Globe le degre du Soleil." - evidently enabled the user to manipulate his globes with or without an instructor present. ......

Rudbeck 8 (variant 1-3), 4, 3 respektive 5.
