TAYLOR, Thomas (1576-1632)
Apparent First Thus Ed. - Hardcover. Originally full sheep; covers now detached and much worn at corners. The title page missing, but identified by the British Library in 2005 as one from three similar but not identical copies they hold, by reason of it's dimensions, also a watermark in the rear end paper corresponds with a copy lodged in Humanities, shelfmark C122e.19. The missing tp. would then have read as the above title. A facsimile of the page is stated to be available from the British Library. The replaced front end paper is watermarked 1839, and appears contemporary with a re-bind over the original damaged Sheep, with an added black and gilt spine label reading "TAYLOR ON TITUS", with the date 1612 gilt stamped to the spine tail. Text block is tight, with no missing pages other than the tp. Final page of text remains attached to the original end-paper and lower board. Text is displaced upward through majority of the book. Water staining present in a band 5/8" wide max., and decreasing, to the fore-edge for the first 60 pages approx. and again at the rear inner lower corner, for circa 10 pages. Soiling to the first and last few pages, otherwise content is generally very clean. Faded pencil and ink underlinings and comments in a fine hand scattered throughout, All edges much darkened; the top edge particularly so. Text begins with a four-page Dedication to the Right Honourable Lord Rich, as from Taylor's home at Watford, dated March 16 1612, followed by six-page introduction "To the Christian Reader", then 751 pp. of text, ending with 11 pp. of tables and corrections. … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

SWEERT) Sweert, Emanuel
Frankfurt, Germany.. Ca. 1612.. Engraving with handcolor, image 13 1/4 x 8 1/4 inches on sheet size 15 x 10 inches. Spot (approximately 1 inch) to mid right image, a few faint spots to outer margins, otherwise very good condition. From Emanuel Sweert's Florilegium, first issued in 1612, with five subsequent editions. "Emanuel Sweert, a Dutch florist, was at one time Praefectus of the gardens of the Emperor Rudolf II, and it was at his behest that the work was produced. Although it did not contain prices it also served as a catalogue of plants offered for sale by Sweert at the Frankfurt Fair." (de Belder catalogue). The intaglio processes of engraving and etching had only recently been applied to botanical illustration, allowing for a finer, more spontaneous line than the woodcut. This is a lovely image of an eggplant and tomato plant (at that time newly introduced to Europe from the Americas), and two other Solanum plants. .

Collaert, A
Antwerpen, (ca 1612). Oblong 8vo (18.8 x 12.4 cm). 19 beautiful contemporarily hand-coloured engravings including the engraved title page depicting Orpheus charming and taming the birds and beasts of the forest. All are mounted on contemporary paper and nicely framed in five sections in a tortoise-shell setting.l An exceptional suite in a contemporary coloured state. Of the 19 plates, only 2 have the normally present numbering and engraved signature: "Adrian. Collaert fecit et excud". The other 16 are most probably some sort of proof prints before letters and numbers, which is very unusual and completely unknown in any bibliography nor was it known by the leading expert, Sam Segal, whom we consulted. He also confirmed the contemporary colouring, all done in the same brilliant hand. Nissen quotes an engraved title and 19 engravings; therefore we are lacking 1 plate only, which makes this an almost complete set of the already very rare suite of the animalium. The plates depict men (mostly in hunting scenes), apes, cows, bulls, horses, lions, dogs, camels, goats, deer, pigs, elephants, wolves, rhinoceroses, a chameleon, etc. -one of the nicest engravings on animals from this great Flemish artist. A few plates with a small and old repaired tear and one with a tiny damaged spot in the image, some of the mounts with old paper repairs, but overall in very good condition, with great vibrant colouring, some heightened with gold. Nissen ZBI, 924; Wood 293. Bridson & White, Animal and Anatomical Illustration in Art & Science, D61 only quotes numbered and signed suites of prints.

MORONI, LINO
Florence, 1612. Folio. 24ff., + 22ff. lettered plates, two of which fold out and are comprised of multiple sheets. First edition. Illustrated with an elaborate engraved frontispiece portrait of St. Francis surrounded by allegorical symbols and twenty-two plates. Details in each of the plates are labeled with letters, which correspond to explanatory keys on the facing pages. These pages are surrounded by intricate typographic borders and ornamentation. On the morning of the 14th of September, 1224, St. Francis of Assisi received the gift of the Stigmata on the Monte della Vernia in the Tuscan Apennines. This remarkable example of Italian Baroque book illustration is an inspired endeavor to illustrate the experiences of St. Francis, as well as the chapels and churches in the area that had been erected in the 13th and 14th centuries. The copper engravings were cut from drawings by the Veronese painter Jacopo Ligozzi, seven of these (A, C, N, P, U, X and Y) were done by Raphael Sciaminossi and are concerned chiefly with St. Francis?'s forty days on the mountain. Most of the fifteen unsigned plates show architectural or landscape details. The frontispiece portrait of St. Francis was engraved by Domenico Falcini. Four plates feature six engraved overlay slips, all but one of which are to show differences in the landscape between the early 13th century and 1608: the exception is plate F, which depicts a screen hiding two frescos. Because of the tendency for these little slips to become dislodged, copies with all six overlays present are extremely rare, the last complete copy havin … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

C[HURCHE], R[ooke].
London: Printed by W[illiam] S[tansby] for Richard Moore, 1612. Small quarto (184 x 139 mm), pp. [6], 108, [4] index; with initial blank [A1]. Old sheep boards, double blind rules, rebacked to style, corners restored. Some paper restoration, mostly trivial, 6 leaves (B2, B3, D2, D3, K1, K2) extended at fore-margin, spill-burn in L2 costing a couple of letters either side but not the sense, later (probably 19th-century) marginal note to N4v; a very good copy. Folding plate depicting the measuring instrument, woodcut illustrations in text, tables and mathematical equations. First and only edition, by Rooke Churche, King's Surveyor, though often erroneously attributed to R. Chambers or Robert Churton. A classic early work of early 17th-century husbandry, with similar aims and views to, but long predating, Evelyn's Sylva (1664). In his preface Churche praises Henry Howard, earl of Northampton, as an exemplary manager of forestry. The book is fairly well-held institutionally, ESTC locating seven copies in Britain and four in North America, but scarce in commerce. Henrey 29; STC 4923. [Attributes: First Edition]

NUNCIATURE RELATIONS. -
188 leaves. Small folio. 19th-century half leather (somewhat rubbed and bumped). Lucerne and Rome, (c. 1612-1703). The Holy See established a permanent nunciature at Lucerne during the time of the counter reformation, to intensify diplomatic relations with Switzerland, and with the Catholic cantons in particular. Part of the duties of the represenatives was to send reports about Swiss internal and external matters regularly. (Lucerne, c. 1612). - Ladislaus di Aquino was nuncio from 1608-1613. He gives a detailed description of Switzerland, the cantons, the topography, constitutions, administrations, diplomatic relations, etc. Haller thinks that the work merits well to be published, that its content is immensely important and that a useful excerpt would become too voluminous. - Cf. Haller V, 783. II. Boccapaduli, (Francesco). Compendio della Relazione dello stato della Nunziatura de gli Svizzeri data da Mons(igno)re Boccapaduli, a. M.
