Rare first edition of this account of the life and career of García Hurtado de Mendoza, Captain General and later Viceroy of Peru, complete with the "Prologo" leaves, often lacking. Mendoza had a particularly controversial career in the New World. He commanded eight vessels bound for South America in 1557, and after arriving in Chile, Mendoza sent out various tributary expeditions across the Andes in an attempt to establish Spanish authority in a wider area and among the remoter regions. In addition to the inland expeditions, Mendoza sent two parties south to explore the coastline as far as Tierra del Fuego; one of these maritime journeys was commanded by Francisco de Ulloa, who provides an introductory note for the present work. Shortly thereafter, Mendoza was relieved of duty and ordered back to Spain, likely for abusing his authority with the indigenous peoples in South America. He was later pardoned and returned to the Americas in 1590 to serve as viceroy of Peru, where he spent almost a decade developing the economy and spreading Spanish culture in the region … [Click Below for Full Description]

Montemayor, Jorge de.
[Bilingual French / Castellan]. Paris, De l'imprimerie d'Anthoine du Brueil, 1613. Small Octavo. Engraved titlepage, [6], 347, [21] pages. [Pagecount of 347 is incorrect and should be 694 because only every second page is imprinted with progressing numeration]. Hardcover / Half - leather of the 19th century. Binding in poor condition. Bookblock and interior in very good and firm condition. Faded dampstain to text only. Very RARE !! Jorge de Montemor (Spanish: Jorge de Montemayor) (1520 - 26 February 1561) was a Portuguese novelist and poet, who wrote almost exclusively in Spanish. His most famous work is a pastoral prose romance, the Diana (1559). He was born at Montemor-o-Velho (near Coimbra), whence he derived his name, the Spanish form of which is Montemayor. He seems to have studied music in his youth, and to have gone to Spain in 1543 as chorister in the suite of the Portuguese Infanta Maria, first wife of Philip II. In 1552 he went back to Portugal in the suite of the Infanta Juana, wife of João Manuel, Prince of Portugal, and on the death of this prince in 1554 returned to Spain. He is said to have served in the army, to have accompanied Philip II to England in 1555, and to have travelled in Italy and the Low Countries; but it is certain that his poetical works were published at Antwerp in 1554, and again in 1558. His reputation is based on a prose work, the Diana, a pastoral romance published about 1559. Shortly afterwards Montemor was killed in Piedmont, apparently in a love affair; a late edition of the Diana gives the exact date of his death. The Diana is genera … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bible, English. Authorized (i.e. King James Version). Apocrypha
Robert Barker, 1613. First and Second Editions (see below). Folio. 106 consecutive leaves, collates Iiii3-Ccccc6, complete thus. Superbly and sympathetically bound in recent dark brown quarter calf over dark brown wooden boards, single ornamental brass catch and clasp (catching on the lower cover in the English style), six raised bands on spine. In excellent condition, the paper stock crisp and unblemished (a few letters along fore-edges cropped). THE ENTIRE APOCRYPHA FROM THE GREAT KING JAMES, OR "AUTHORIZED" VERSION OF THE BIBLE. As is well known, the printer, Robert Barker, was chaotically and almost simultaneously printing and assembling copies of the First Edition (Great "He" Bible) together with the Second Edition (Great "She" Bible). Our copy is noteworthy as it is composed of exactly 50% "He" Bible sheets and 50% "She" Bible sheets, thereby exhibiting with perfect clarity the chaos of the printing operation that resulted in publication of what is today described as the 1611-1613 King James, or "Authorized" Version of the Bible. The translation itself is widely considered a towering achievement in English literature, a rare combination of textual beauty and painstaking scholarship, created by the most unlikely of all sources, namely: a committee. The KJV itself has been called "the most influential version of the most influential book in the world, in what is now its most influential language," "the most important book in English religion and culture", and "the most celebrated book in the English-speaking world." The bibliographic complexities of the Great "He" Bible … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jodocus HONDIUS (1563 - 1612)
Exquisite portrait of two of the most important mapmakers during the Dutch dominance of cartography. Gerard Mercator is shown with his successor, Jodocus Hondius, seated at a table surrounded by the implements of their trade. The fine portrait is set within an elaborate strapwork framework that encompasses a map of Europe. The scene was engraved by Coletta Hondius, in tribute to her late husband, and appears in the Atlas from 1613 onwards. Very fine impression and original color. London 1613: Robert Barker, 1613. CONDITION: THERE IS A STORY BEHIND EVERY BLEMISH! Bible leaf collectors know that some leaves are hard to look at and others look as new as the day they left the printing press. The condition of a particular leaf reflects its history and is not an indication of its actual value. Perfect leaves are ones that have seen little or no use over the centuries in contrast to those that are scarred by the ravages of time. Unblemished leaves are unloved leaves because they have had little contact with sinners. Imperfect leaves tell a story. Some are torn and ripped and worn away by excessive use while others have burns or worm holes and still others are water stained by flood and sometimes even tears. Each ugly mark or stain is in fact a beautiful witness to the Word of God, which, "liveth and abideth forever." We offer Bible leaves as we acquire them letting their condition speak for themselves. All our leaves are sold as seen on eBay. Contact us for additional images or information. Choice Leaves, Finer than Gold, from the Word of God Taste and see! It's sweeter than honey!! Jodocus HONDIUS (1563 - 1612)
This superb, decorative map of Provence was based on Pierre-Jean de Bompar's map of 1591. It was engraved by the famous Dutch copperplate engraver Baptista van Doetichum who embellished it in his distinctive style with bold cartouches, an elaborate compass rose, sailing ships and sea monsters. The map covers the region from Avignon and the Rhone delta to Saluzzo and San Remo in Italy. Jodocus Hondius acquired the copperplates of the Mercator atlas and added several additional maps, including this one, for his re-issue of the atlas between 1606 and 1631. Latin text on verso. Copperplate, a great dark impression, good condition. Koeman I, 4700:1A. Van der Krogt (Vol. I) #4700:1A.

HESIOD
Lvgdvni Batavorvm: officina Ioannis Patij, 1613. 1613 Works of Hesiod Greek Philosophy Theogony Mythology Dutch Heinsius Latin"He who neither thinks for himself nor learns from others, is a failure as a man." - Hesiod A rare, early 17th-century printing of the works of Hesiod, a Greek poet who is thought to have been a peer of Homer. Only three surviving works have been attributed to Hesiod, of which, 'Theogony' is the most famous. 'Theogony' describes the origins and genealogies of the Greek gods, beginning with the first gods through the children of Zeus and the life of Prometheus. Hesiod had a profound effect on early Greek philosophy, early rhetoric, and the development out of archaic religious beliefs. This 1613 edition was published in both Latin and Greek and edited by famous Dutch scholar Daniel Heinsius.Item number: #7791Price: $599HESIODEsiodou Askraiou tà euriskomena = Hesiodi Ascraei, quae exstantLvgdvni Batavorvm: ex officina Ioannis Patij, ..., 1613.Details: · Collation: Complete with all pageso [40], 312, [4]· Language: Latin / Greek· Binding: Vellum; tight & secure· Size: ~7in X 4.5in (18cm x 12cm)Our Guarantee:Very Fast. Hessel GERRITSZ (1581-1632)
[Click Below for Full Description]

After the 1611 version the early versions of the King James being the 1612-1614 copies still contained many printer's typos and mistranslated statements, although there were more then a couple the most exposed was (Did Jesus wan't us to Hate our family and ourselves Luke 14:26,) - of course not. This Late 1612 and Early 1613 had many mistakes as the Greek Bible was still being translated to English. Most Bibles from this period found, have owners markings correcting these problems. This Bible has no correction Markings and is as it was printed during the period. By the late 1614's many of the corrections had been made to print. Because the Greek New Testament was written in Koine Greek, certain words were mistranslated. One of the trickiest word was the Greek term miseo. The King James Bible translates this as "hate." Because of this, in Luke 14:26, Jesus tells his followers "If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and h … [Click Below for Full Description]
