BLONDEL, François.
[32], 160, [1], [1 blank] pp.Third revised edition of Blondel's famous work on the composition and medicinal values of the sulphur springs in Aachen and Burtscheid. The Flemish doctor François Blondel (1613-1703), whose full-page engraved portrait is inserted after the table of contents, devoted his life to the promotion of the medicinal qualities of these springs. Since Roman times, the springs were known to provide relief against rheumatism, gout and scrofulous disorders. Blondel became inspector of the springs in 1666 and instituted a drinking course of the mineral water. Blondel's promotion of the springs also provided the city of Aachen, which suffered a major fire in 1656, with an important source of income.Blondel first published the first edition in 1671, the second in 1685 and the present third enlarged edition appeared in 1688. It includes recommendations from Dutch and German doctors, signed 1687 and 1688. It was translated into German and Dutch. In good condition with only a few small stains. Binding slightly rubbed and spine damaged (lacking most of the backstrip). Alphonso Tosati
Cologne: 1613. Condition: Fine: two signatures seen in ink to the inside front cover:The book is in above average condition for its great age: The spine and binding are sound, and all pages are present: There is some damage to the inside cover page (please see pictures) however, this appears to be rodent / insect related: There are some signs of insect damage to the top and bottom spine however, this is localised and limited. There is foxing seen to some of the pages, which is age associated: some of the pages have small surface burns from fire or candle proximity and these are small and insignificant: Woodcuts remain crisp and are fine for a book over four centuries of age:Further pictures are available upon request however, these will only be provided to serious potential buyers. Blaeu-- Willem
IMPORTANT WALL MAP OF THE GRAND DUCHY OF LITHUANIA AND THE DNIEPER RIVER?Magni Ducatus Lithuaniae, Caeterarumque Regionum Illi Adiacentium Exacta Descriptio... [Exact descripton of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and its neighbouring territories], copper engraving published in Amsterdam by Willem Blaeu in 1613 or later. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 76 x 106,5 cm.This superb wall map of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania had its beginning in 1586 when Prince Michael Radziwill commissioned M. Strubicz to survey the entire Lithuanian state which then included Poland. Strubicz's map was so accurate and detailed that it provided the basis for all subsequent maps of the area during the 17th and 18th centuries.Willem Blaeu first published his four-sheet map of Lithuania along with a two-sheet map of the Dnieper River in 1613 with the imprint ?Guilhelmus Janssonius? below the legend at bottom left. He later added the name ?Blaeu? to his name in order to differentiate himself from his rival, Jan Jansson. These maps of Lithuania and the Dnieper River, which had been engraved by Hessel Gerritsz, first appeared in Blaeu?s atlases in his Appendix in 1631, and were subsequently published in various editions through 1670.Following Blaeu's original 4-sheet version of the Gerritsz map, Blaeu and Jansson issued single sheet versions, the latter of which was re-issued by Van Waesberg and Moses Pitt at the end of the 17th century. The map covers the region from Riga to Smolensk in the north, and from Cracow to Kiev in the south, including parts of Poland, Russia, Ukraine and Latvia. The map provides … [Click Below for Full Description]

Beethoven, Ludwig van. (1770-1827)
Breitkopf & Härtel, Leipzig, 1613. Upright folio [piano part only]. Disbound. 1f. (title), 3-42 pp. Price: "4 Rthlr." Engraved throughout. [PN] 1613.  Ticket of the Rotterdam publisher L. Plattner overlayed on title printed Breitkopf publisher identification. Tempo of last movement: "Allegro ma non troppo." Small stain along the upper edge throughout, small tears along left edge, occasional markings in (contemporary?) pen and red ink in blank margin, else a very clean copy. First German edition, first issue. Kinsky p. 196; Hoboken 2, 332; Hirsch, IV, 319. Kinsky considers the Breitkopf & Härtel edition to be the first, however, it is actually predated by the edition published by Clementi in 1810.  The present first issue of the German first edition is very rare. No copy of this piano part has appeared at auction in nearly 70 years. The Fifth Piano Concerto - the Emperor -  is  composed on a large scale, is the most ambitious in scope and longest of all the concertos by Beethoven, and is regarded by many as his finest essay in this form.  Unquestionably the best known of Beethoven's piano concerti, it is perhaps the best known piano concerto by any composer.  One of Beethoven's great iconoclastic works, it is a composition in which the composer reinvents the piano concerto, demolishing the older structure of the eighteenth-century form and paving the way for the celebrated Romantic concertos of Schumann, Liszt, Brahms and Tchaikovsky. With the appearance of the soloist after the stirring opening chord, Beethoven announces his unmistakable intention to make the piano an equal … [Click Below for Full Description]

NICERON, Jean François.
1613. [16], 191, [1]; [12], 134 pp.Richly illustrated manual on perspective in which for the first time the secrets of anamorphosis and trompe l'oeil are fully revealed by Jean François Niceron (1613-1646), Minim friar, professor in mathematics, and specialist in geometrical optics. The work also contained the first published reference to Descartes's derivation of the law of refraction and it deals with the perspective rendering of geometric objects of unusual shape, with anamorphoses and with the camera obscura. First published in 1638 with 25 plates only, Niceron's work is here heavily enlarged by Roberval, in text, more detail in the already published plates and in 25 extra plates. It is published together with the posthumously published first edition of a scholarly work on optics and catoptics by Marin Mersenne (1588-1648), who is particulary known for his Mersenne primes. In this work, also his major work, Niceron concentrates in four books primarily on the practical applications of perspective, catoptrics, and dioptrics, following the latest theoretical developments, and on the illusory effects of optics, then traditionally associated with natural magic. The added work by Mersenne contains the author’s final contributions to optics, including experimental studies of visual acuity and binocular vision, but also a critical discussion of current hypotheses on the nature of light. With some manuscript notes and mathematical diagrams in black ink on the endpapers and the back paste-down, but also throughout the text, and a (later?) drawing of a pig and a gnome (?) with red-b … [Click Below for Full Description]
