CANISIUS, Petrus, S.J. Saint. 1521-1597
Augsburg: C. Mang for J. Krüger, 1613. CONTEMPORARY GILT RED MOROCCO WITH THE ARMS OF JACQUES-AUGUSTE DE THOU and his second wife Gasparde de La Chastre (Olivier-Hermal-Roton 216,8), spine gilt with their cipher in four compartments (O-H-R 216,9 variant) and the title in two, all edges gilt. Bound with: Canisius, Petrus, S.J. Saint. 1521-1597. Catechismus Imaginibus expressus. Augsburg, C. Dabertzhofer for J. Krüger 1613. 8vo. [ii], 147, [1], [2 blank]p. Roman and italic type, ONE-HUNDRED-THREE WOODCUTS and title woodcut as above (I). Ad I-II: A lovely pair of picture catechisms.  Canisius' Small Catechism was printed over one hundred times in more than a dozen languages. Jesuit Georg Mayr (1564-1623) expressly prepared these versions - with scant text - for youngsters. The images do the teaching. The publisher, Krüger, brought out the editions simultaneously to more rapidly realize profits from his new blocks. In excellent condition (two small worm trails in the blank margin of the first six leaves).  Provenance: French statesman, historian and bibliophile J.-A. de Thou (1553-1617), his heirs (Catalogus (1704) I: 81), J.J. Charron, marquis de Ménars (1643-1718), Cardinal G. de Rohan (1674-1749), C. de Rohan, prince de Soubise (1715-87; characteristic manuscript shelf marks on the front panel and front pastedown (effaced); Catalogue (1788) 1447); bookplate of Hans Fürstenberg (1890-1982). ¶Haub, "Bey was Zeichen erkennet man einen katholischen Christen? Besler-- Basilius
Prijs: Euro 2.150,-.

DANTE
Vicenza,: ad instantia di Francesco Leni, 1613. Vicenza, ad instantia di Francesco Leni, 1613. In-24 p. (mm. 101x70), p. pergamena coeva, 608 pp.num., 16 cc.nn., titolo al frontespizio entro cornice decorata, testo in carattere corsivo. Dedica a Gio. Battista Minardi.

RAMUSIO, Giovanni Battista
Giunta, Venice, 1613. Three volumes, folio (305 x 205 mm), with 10 double-page or folded maps (seven woodcut, three engraved) and other woodcut maps, plans and illustrations in the text; eighteenth-century calf, spines gilt, gilt edges. A complete set of the greatest international collection of early travels (the three volumes respectively in sixth, third and third editions, representing the fullest possible text). Ramusio was assiduous in gathering and editing his narratives, some of them accounts published for the first time by him and not otherwise known, and some of which differed from previously printed versions. "In terms of wealth of material no previous compilation of travels could match Ramusio's achievement" (Lach, I p. 208). 'The publication of Ramusio's raccolta may be said to open an era in the literary history of voyages and navigation. Instead of accounts carelessly copied and translated from previous collections, perpetuating errors and anachronisms, we find in this valuable work original narrations judiciously selected, carefully printed, and enriched with notices which betray the hand of a scholar of great critical acumen.' (Harrisse, p. 457). Ramusio's Navigationi et viaggi was 'the first large published collection of historical documents other than collections of laws and decretals; the first large and planned collection of travel documents, and therefore the first approach to a documented history of travel and geography; and if not the first work, certainly the second (after the Novus orbis collection published at Basel in 1532) to imply the concept of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Antwerp: Plantin Press for the widow and sons of Jan Moretus, 1613. First edition. First edition, and a fine copy, of this great Jesuit treatise on optics, with engraved allegorical frontispiece and exquisite headpieces designed by Peter Paul Rubens. "A master treatise on optics that synthesized the works of Euclid, Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen), Vitellio, Roger Bacon, Pena, Ramus (Pierre de la Ramée), Risner, and Kepler" (DSB). "A landmark of baroque book illustration, this is one of seven works known to have been illustrated by Rubens" (Becker). "Aguilón was one of the first of a long line of distinguished Jesuit writers on optics. His treatise has acquired a great deal of attention because of its seven engravings after drawings by Rubens. It is not so well known that Aguilón's color theory and his prescriptions for the mixing of colors were actually used by Rubens in his paintings" (Ashworth, in Jesuit science in the age of Galileo). "The color system of François d'Aguilón in 1613 is believed to be the oldest system to use red, yellow, and blue" (Burchett, A Bibliographic History of the study and use of color from Aristotle to Kandinsky, p. 19). "A remarkable collaboration between the scientific, printing and visual arts. Intended for use in Jesuit schools, Aguilón's work was primarily a synthesis of classical and modern writings on optics; however, it also contained the first discussion of the stereographic process (which Aguilón named), one of the earliest presentations of the red-yellow-blue color system, an original theory of binocular vision and the first published descr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Venice Appresso i Giunti, 1613. See Details. Delle Navigationi et Viaggi Raccolte da M. Gio. Battista Ramusio, In Tre Volumi Divise VOLUME PRIMO EXTREMELY RARE BOOK ILLUSTRATED WITH WOODCUTS !NO MAPS! 6TH EDITION ITALIAN LANGUAGE TEXT Publisher: In Venetia, Appresso I Giunti Copyright: 1613 CONDITION: This book is in poor condition. Hardcover/Rebound. This book has been hastily rebound. The current binding belonged to another book. The boards were glued onto spine merely to protect the manuscript. This extremely rare and hard to find volume of Ramusio's famous work I beautifully typeset and contains many woodcuts as well as printer's device on title page. The maps have unfortunately been excised. The text block is in surprisingly good shape for its age. There is some toning/browning and occasional foxing throughout the text. There is evidence of moisture damage along right hand corner. There is an old ink signature on the title page which reads Bendinelli Sauli. This book was likely housed in the library of the Bendinelli Sauli palace in Genoa. The palace is located in Via San Lorenzo at number 12 in the historic center of Genoa and is currently included in the list of buildings registered with the Rolli of Genoa. There is another ink inscription on the rear endpaper written in Italian. This book is a prime candidate for rebinding. Price reflects condition. Only reasonable offers will be considered. ~ Though he himself traveled little, Ramusio published Navigationi et Viaggi ("Navigations and Travels"); a collection of explorers' first-hand accounts of their travels. Alphonso Tosati
Cologne: 1613. Condition: Fine: two signatures seen in ink to the inside front cover:The book is in above average condition for its great age: The spin and binding are sound, and all pages are present: There is some damage to the inside cover page (please see pictures) however, this appears to be rodent / insect related: There are some signs of insect damage to the top and bottom spine however, this is localised and limited. There is foxing seen to some of the pages, which is age associated: some of the pages have small surface burns from fire or candle proximity and these are small and insignificant: Woodcuts remain crisp and are fine for a book over four centuries of age:Further pictures are available upon request however, these will only be provided to serious potential buyers. He was a Spanish theologian, a counsellor of John II of Castile and briefly … [Click Below for Full Description]
