VISSCHER, Claes Jansz
Claes Jansz Visscher, [1611-1621 or later]., Amsterdam. The Truce Map Hand-coloured engraved map, a few minor areas of loss skilfully repaired in facsimile. The signing of the Twelve Year Truce in 1609, by the Dutch Republic, the Southern Netherlands and Hapsburg Spain, proved a catalyst for another version of the Leo Belgicus. In around 1611, Claes Janszoon Visscher published his ?ÄòBestandskaart?Äô or ?ÄòTruce Map?Äô - ?Äúone of the peaks of 17th century cartography?Äù (van der Heijden) ?Äì a lion at rest in a sitting position, his right paw on the hilt of a lowered sword. The map is replete with allusions to the fruits of peace: to the right of the lion, war ?Äì personified by a knight in a full suit of armour ?Äì is shown asleep, and to the left personifications of North and South are shown seated together with ?Äòd?ÄôOude Twist?Äô (the old rancour) buried under foot. A cherub pours the sweet nectar of the ?ÄòBestant van 12 jaer?Äô (the 12 Year Truce) into the mouth of the lion; heavenly blessing (?Äòzeghen des hemels?Äô )descends upon the country. These bring with it arts and sciences (?ÄòConst en Wetenschap?Äô); safety (?ÄòVailighe Tijdt?Äô); knowledge and wealth (?ÄòKennisse en Rijkdom?Äô); prosperous towns (?Äò ?Äòt Vergrooten der Steden?Äô); the cultivation of the land (?Äò ?Äòt Vredich Lantbouwen?Äô); and trade (?ÄòCoophandel?Äô). Yet even in these peaceful times, the frontier guard (?ÄòFrontier Wacht?Äô) remains alert.Although the map celebrated the truce, it also implied ?Äì with the personification of north and south - the break-up of the XVII Provinces.

Guarini, Giovanni Battista, Italian poet (1538-1612).
1611. Large 8vo. 2 pp. on double leaf. To an important personage regarding the organization of a horse race or tournament in honour of the Spanish ambassador in Rome: "[...] perche ho molto ben inteso il suo disid[eri]o m'ingegnerò di trattare con quel sig[no]re in modo che V[ostra] S[ignoria] Ill[ustrissi]ma resti servita. - The said "Duchessa" is possibly Margherita Gonzaga, widow of Alfonso II. d'Este, Duca di Ferrara. - Slightly browned. The New Testament of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Newly translated out of the original Greek: and with the former translations diligently compared and revised, by his majesties special commandment. Imprinted at London by Robert Barker, printer to the Kings most excellent majesty.A close reprint of the text of the folio of 1611, though obvious mistakes like Mark vii. 4 marge. are corrected. Taking the passages quoted by Scrivener on p. 206 and p. 213 of his book The Authorized Edition, we find that in ever case except one (Luke x. 36) this New Testament agrees with the 1611 edition against that of 1613,11. 11 expertly produced facsimile pagesDarlow and Moule #245

Urreta, Louis.
1611. Small 4to (21 x 15 cm). With woodcut arms of the Dominican order (with the IHS and cross covering the centre) on title-page, and a variant version on the last page, and 3 woodcuts in text (2 saints and the Cross). Further with 24 decorated woodcut initials in two series, including 11 repeats. [16], 410, [6] pp. Contemporary gold-tooled mottled calf, each board with the coat of arms of the French Seguier family and with the monogram PSMF (Pierre Seguier and his wife Madeleine Fabry) repeated 6 times on the spine, rebacked (on recessed cords) with original gold-tooled backstrip laid-down, a later spine label (between the 1st and 2nd monogram), the year of publication 1611 at the foot of the spine, later endpapers. First and only edition, in Spanish, of an early work on Ethiopia by the Spanish Dominican monk Luis de Urreta (ca. 1570-1636), who wrote two volumes glorifying his own order's accomplishments in Ethiopia while diminishing those of the Jesuits (his Dominican coat of arms incorporates the IHS with cross, often used by the Jesuits). In the present work, the second of the two, he deals specifically with the Dominican presence in Ethiopia and the history of the Ethiopian saints. Like the first work, the Historia ecclesiastica published in 1610, it is a late example of a stream of geographical fantasies where Ethiopia was presented as the wondrous utopian kingdom of Prester John, and Urreta makes the case for an ancient Dominican presence in the country, arguing that they should thus be given precedence over the Jesuits as Catholic missionaries in that country.

1611. Divorce Due to Sexual Dysfunction Tagereau, Vincent. Paris: N. Rousset [Roussel], 1611. [viii], 191, [1] pp. Octavo (6-3/4" x 4-1/4"). Later paper-covered boards. Light rubbing to extremities. Moderate toning, somewhat heavier in places, faint dampspotting to a few leaves. Side-notes affected in a few places by shaving, minor tears to margins of a few leaves. Early underlining to some passages in faint pencil, interior otherwise clean. An appealing copy of a scarce work. * First edition. A treatise on the dissolution of marriage due to sexual dysfunction. The legal procedure, called "epreuve du congres," was humiliating: before a jury of lawyers, judges and witnesses, the man had to show whether or not he was able to fulfill the duties imposed by marriage. Apparently, testimony sufficed when dealing with female dysfunction. Later editions were published in 1612 and 1655, with reissues of the 1612 edition in 1887, 1900 and 2013. All editions and reissues are scarce. OCLC locates 7 copies of the first edition, 2 in North America (Harvard Law School, UCLA). Another copy located at GWU Law School.
