VIRGIL.
Geneva, Étienne Gamonet, 1610. 4to, pp. [32], 732, 62, [76, index]; title in red and black with engraved printer's device, engraved initials, head- and tail-pieces; small tears to M1 and 3I8 with loss of a few words, small tears to 2E7-8 touching a few letters, some foxing and browning, occasional marginal damp staining, a few small ink stains; overall good in seventeenth-century red morocco, gilt fillet border, central gilt arms of the city of Marseille and erased fleur-de-lys cornerpieces to covers, spine in compartments lettered and decorated in gilt, marbled edges and pastedowns; some rubbing to extremities and marks to boards; inscription and bookplate of Jules Doin.Scarce edition of Virgil's Eclogues, Georgics, and Aeneid with extensive commentary by the fourth-century grammarian Maurus Servius Honoratus, based on the ground-breaking edition published by the French jurist Pierre Daniel (1530-1603) at Paris in 1600. Étienne Gamonet (1556-1638) was an important French printer and bookseller who became a citizen of Geneva in 1604.This handsome copy bears the arms of the city of Marseille (the stamp being very similar to Olivier pl. 772 fer 3), and may perhaps have been awarded as a classical prize at the Collège there. The covers originally also bore gilt fleur-de-lys cornerpieces but these have been erased, in all likelihood during or shortly after the French Revolution when their royal associations would have made their presence unwelcome.USTC 6703652. MAUNDRELL, Henry and G. MUNTENDAM (translator)
[6], 188 pp.First edition of the Dutch translation of an account of a journey from Aleppo to Jerusalem and back by the British clergyman Henry Maundrell. The work was partially published to bring up to date Sandys's famous Relation of a journey (1610), which was still very popular. However, "Maundrell's account is quite different from that of Sandys, and is a major work in its own right, giving detailed descriptions of the life and landscapes of Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine, including the agricultural practices of the regions and places encountered, in addition to descriptions of places of religious significance. The factual accounts of the relict features of the ancient worlds are of interest and value, and they are accompanied by careful measurements and plans of major sites such as Baalbek" (Butlin).Browned, lower outer corner of title-page restored, some occasional foxing and mostly marginal stains. Binding rubbed along the extremities, sides scratched.l STCN (7 copies); cf. Atabey 784; Howgego, to 1800, P117; for the author see: Butlin, "Maundrell, Henry (bap. 1665, d. 1701)", in: ODNB (online).

LA BOULLAYE LE GOUZ, Francois de.
[16], 540, [10], [2 blank] pp.Rare first edition of a travelogue by the French explorer, merchant and diplomat François de la Boullaye-Le Gouz (ca.1610-1669). The largest part of the book deals with his travels through the Midde East and India, while a smaller parts treats Le Gouz's travels through Europe. In 1643 he travelled the Middle East under the name Ibrahim Beg, visiting Syria, Palestine, Persia, Egypt, Anatolia and Armenia. A few years later he was send by the French king with an embassy to the Mogul emperor Shah Jahan, where he met and became great friends with the Jesuit Alexandre de Rhodes (1591-1660). La Boullaye-Le Gouz describes the routes he takes, the cities he visits and the people he meets along the way, with frequent observations on religion, natural history and commerce. The illustrations show various Indian deities, some city views or buildings, Indian and Eastern costumes, plants and trees. Pages 243-255 deal with plants, fruits and trees in India, including several palm trees, a fig tree, a jack tree and a melon tree. "The work is notable for its information on northern India and its relations to Persia, and for its inclusion of a summary of the Ramayana" (Howgego).Occasionally a small (water) stain, internally otherwise in very good condition. Binding rubbed, restored and front hinge partly cracked.l Atabey 645; Hamilton, Europe and the Arab world 22; Howgego, to 1800, L4; Slot, The Arabs of the Gulf 1602-1784, p. 410; WorldCat (5 copies).

SABBATTINI, Nicola.
[4], 89, [2] pp.Rare first edition, in the original Italian, of the first book devoted exclusively to stage design, stage architecture, machinery and special effects on stage. It is written in the form of directions to the architect who must transform a hall of state into a theatre. The author takes the reader backstage and reveals the secrets of the elaborate effects so often found in Renaissance theatre. He deals with the general problems of theatre construction, audience arrangement, scene construction and lighting. It is our main source of information on the scenic practice in the Italian Renaissance theatre and helped to spread that practice throughout Europe. From 1610 Sabbattini (1574-1654) had worked in Pesaro as chief architect and engineer in service of Francesco Maria Della Rovere (1549-1631), last Duke of Urbino. With early owners' inscriptions on title-page. With unobtrusive marginal restorations in the first and last leaves, including the blank lower half of the final leaf, and some faint stains, but otherwise in good condition. Spine of wrapper restored. Rare first edition of an essential source for any study of Renaissance theatre.l Berlin Kat. 2785; ICCU (5 copies); Percy Muir, Talks on book collecting, 1952, p. 96; Quagliarini, Costruzioni in legno nei teatri, 2008, pp. 100-101.

BESSON, Joseph.
[24], 232, [24]; 269, [35] pp.First (and only early French) edition of an account of the Jesuit mission in Syria, along with a description of Syria in general, by the French Jesuit Joseph Besson (1610-1691). He covers much more territory than the modern "Syria", including the whole of Lebanon and much of Palestine, so that there is, for example, a chapter on the churches of Jerusalem. The second part also includes travels in other parts of the Middle East. Before Besson travelled through Syria, Persia and Arabia, he was rector at Nimes and taught rhetoric and philosophy. The first part specifically recounts the establishment, development and progress of the Jesuit mission in Syria. The second part (with a drop-title and its own pagination) describes the holy and sacred sites Besson visited. It gives a very detailed and interesting description of Syria and of the various customs and habits of the Druse, Maronite, Armenian (Catholic and Apostolic), Turkish, Jewish and other people there. With the author's five-page dedicatory letter to Queen of Poland (Maria Ludwika), whose husband King Jan Casimir II had joined the Jesuit order in 1641. The binding has been restored at the head and foot of the spine, but appears to retain the original headbands. The mottling has caused some surface damage, but the binding remains structurally sound. With a water stain on lower outside corner in the second half, not reaching the text, and a stain along a repaired tear in the map, but still a good copy.l De Backer & Sommervogel 1412; Chadenat 756.

KORNMANN, Heinrich.
[24], 214; 69, [3]; 117, [3] pp.Rare first complete Netherlands edition of three curious Latin works on women, love and marriage, by Heinrich Kornmann: Sibylla trig-Andriana, De annulo usitato and De linea amoris, published together, at least the first two first published at Frankfurt in 1610. The first discusses the rights and duties of women and their conduct in matters of sex, the second is devoted to rings, including engagement rings and the third is about the commonplace of the five stages of love (sight, conversation, physical contact, kissing and consummation). Kornmann refers to a wide variety of sources, including classical authors and church fathers. He defends women's rights to some degree, but also repeats superstitious beliefs such as that a tree is injured by a virgin's plucking its first fruit. He further discusses incubi and succubi (male and female demons that have sexual relations with humans), astrology and the colour of women's cloths (preferably blue, pink, green and white). Robert Burton refers to De linea amoris in his 1621 Anatomy of melancholy, and all three works enjoyed widespread popularity far into the 18th century. The present edition appears to be the only one with a Netherlands imprint, though a 1631 edition in the STCN, perhaps containing the first work only and giving its place of publication as "Virginopoli" may be Dutch. Kornmann, a lawyer from Kirchhain (Germany), also published several works on miracles. Michaud apparently found Kornmann's discussion of sexual matters too frank, writing in 1818 that he had great erudition, but lacked ta … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lorenzo Loli (Bologna 1612 ca. - Bologna 1691)
In basso a sinistra "G.A. Sirano In.", a destra "L.LL.
[Click Below for Full Description]

Elegant writing in brown ink with excellent readability. 22 lines per page. Watermark: three half moons. Mild halo on pp. 113-116, but very fresh marginal copy laid on high quality paper. Origin: Paduan noble family near the Corner. LUXURY COPY of the dispatches sent to Doge Alvise Contarini (1676-1684) in Venice by the general manager of the sea Andrea Corner, who was stationed in Corfu from June 1677 to February 1680. The date 1679 in the title is certainly to be considered "more Venetian" and refers to February 1680. The volume opens with a preliminary letter addressed to the doge, in which the Corner humbly accepts the prestigious position of "Proveditor da Mar" offered to him by the senate, succeeding the now sick and elderly Antonio Priuli, although, he writes, the news of his transfer in Corfu it was given to him with only 15 days' notice. Corner also asks that the doge write to the governor of Dalmatia to make him a second galley available, not being that of Daniel Dolfin who already has available, sufficient for the transport of all … [Click Below for Full Description]

Antwerp, Hieronymus Verdussen, 1610. 8vo. With a woodcut on title-page. 17th century mottled calf, richly gold-tooled spine, red edges. [8], 384, [8], 115[=215], [17] pp. First edition of a "history of the kings of Persia compiled from the Persian histories of Mir Khwand and Turan Shah" (Howgego), in the original Spanish, by the Portuguese merchant adventurer Pedro Teixeira (1563-1645?). It is one of the earliest European sources to mention Qatar, with notes on the pearl fishing in the region that may be translated: "The pearl fishery at Bahrain begins some years in June, but generally in July, and lasts all that month and August ... They generally go fishing around Katar, a port on the coast of Arabia, 10 leagues to the south of the Island Bahrain. As soon as an oyster is brought up, they open it, and take out the pearl. The pearls of this sea surpass all others in goodness and weight ...". The work is divided into three parts. The first, which is the largest, deals with the kings of Persia. It is a summarized translation of the voluminous Rawzat as-safâ... by the Persian historian Mir Khwand (ca. 1434-1498), and is probably the first translation of the text into a European language. The second part is a translation of the chronicle of the kings of Hormuz by the Ayyubid emir Turan Shah (d. 1180), a text that survives only in translations. Though Teixeira's adventures started in 1586, h … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ostendorfer, Michael]
645 by 385mm (25 by 15 inches).

Marlorat, Augustin
Geneva, Esaias le Preux, 1610. (8) 530 (26) p. Rebound half Leather with raised bands, Folio (Text-block very slightly browned. Provenance: From the library of Nicolaas Barkey (1709-1788) with his name written on the titlepage. Exegetical commentary on the book of Isaiah by French Reformer and martyr Augustine Marlorat (1506-1562). Marlorat ministered to a number of congregations and represented the French Protestants at the Colloquy of Poissy in 1561 together with Beza and Vermigli in debate against the Roman Catholic theologians from the Sorbonne. His works were chiefly commentaries on the Holy Scriptures, some of them published after his death. He also prepared the indices for Calvin's Institutes and is greatly known for the marginal notes and arguments which were used in the New Testament of later Deux Aes translations of the Bible. Derived from Marlorat's works they had to replace Luther's marginal notes to give the Bible a more calvinistic character. Marlorat's Expositiones are mostly literal compilations, put together on the same model. Each chapter and verse is commented by selected passages or phrases from some ancient but most contemporary commentators. The passages are identified by initials to which Marlorat himself provides the key at the end of the prelims. For this volume on Isaiah he used the comments of Oecolampadius, Zwingli, Luther, Pellikan, Calvin, Musculus, Vatable and himself. Illustrated with a large woodcut portrait of the author on the titlepage.) [Attributes: Hard Cover]
