BRAHE, Tycho
Tampach, Frankfurt, 1610. An extraordinary sammelband, uniting the three most important works of the great Danish astronomer, all in first edition, Frankfurt issues, in two volumes uniformly bound in contemporary vellum. "Tycho Brahe's contributions to astronomy were enormous . He revolutionized astronomical instrumentation. He also changed observational practice profoundly. Whereas earlier astronomers had been content to observe the positions of planets and the Moon at certain important points of their orbits, Tycho and his cast of assistants observed these bodies throughout their orbits. Without these complete series of observations of unprecedented accuracy, Kepler could not have discovered that planets move in elliptical orbits . Tycho's observations of the new star [now recognized to have been a supernova] of 1572 and comet of 1577, and his publications on these phenomena, were instrumental in establishing the fact that these bodies were above the Moon and that therefore the heavens were not immutable as Aristotle had argued and philosophers still believed . Further, if comets were in the heavens, they moved through the heavens. Up to now it had been believed that planets were carried on material spheres that fit tightly around each other. Tycho's observations showed that this arrangement was impossible because comets moved through these spheres" (Galileo Project). "Astronomiae instauratae progymnasmata was produced in 1602 by the author's own press at Uraniborg, and only a small number were printed for dedication purposes. It contains important investigations on the n … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

Saville did much to improve the quality of education at Eton, including extending the library holdings and erecting new buildings, including one to house the press from which five classical and patristic works in Greek emanated between 1610 and 1617, including the monumental eight volume folio edition of John Chrysostom. The most influential work of English Catholic priest and controversialist Nicholas Sander (c.1530-1581) - a detailed narrative, told from the perspective of a recusant, of the religious schism caused by the reign of Henry VIII. Unfinished by Sander on his death, the manuscript for the work was first published posthumously at Ingolstadt in 1585, edited and completed by fellow priest Edward Rishton (later editions would benefit from further material additions, ultimately incorporating the rule of Elizabeth I). The work proved immensely popular, and supremely influential to Reformation histories and Catholic historiography - with six Latin editions and translations into French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Polish appearing prior to 1628. ~ About Antiquates We're based in the heart of the Dorset countryside, with an antiquarian bookshop in Wareham, housed within a beauti … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

Rotis, Marcello de
Rome, 1610. Manuscript on paper, leaves 154 x 102mm, ff. [44], then approximately 240 blanks, 5 further written leaves interspersed among them. Early red morocco elaborately gilt, boards bordered with a roll of fish-like figures within sprays, enclosing a frame with putti corner-pieces, within this an oval frame containing a medallion of Christ on the cross and the letters IHS on the front board, and a figure of the Madonna and Child on rear board, above and below the oval frame a flat-bottomed teardrop outlined in gilt containing the name 'Pompeius de Blanchis', spine gilt in compartments, edges gilt and gauffered. Foxed and spotted, the ink showing varying levels of bleed-through, a few spots of ink burn causing small holes in the paper. Some rubbing to gilt, joints repaired and darkened. An elaborate near-contemporary binding on a manuscript record, in several hands, of a family's experiences in 17th-century Italy. The text begins with 10 leaves covering 1569 to 1610, then after a blank opening, a more thorough account of events in Rome in 1611 to 1617. Two blank leaves follow, then text, with occasional blanks interspersed, covering 1621 to 1671, followed by one leaf recording the death on 17 March 1737 of Maria de Rotis, the last of the family, and her burial in San Pietro in Montorio. A further four leaves with annotation are present amongst the remaining blanks, though in a hand closer to that of the earlier entries.

Bibliographie : Barbier III, 17989. - Moreri, Nouveau supplément au grand dictionnaire historique généalogique, page 48.
