1609. Template | Trixum Beschreibung Doni, Anton Francesco. I Marmi, cioè ragionamenti introdotti à farsi da varie conditioni d'huomini, a luoghi di honesto piacere in Firenze... 4 parts in 1 volume. Venezia, Bertoni, 1609. 4°, circa 20,5 x 15 cm. 8 ff., 66, 40, 81 (recte 79) numbered leaves (without the last blank leaf), with 72 woodcuts by Marcolini 19th cent. half-vellum. - See Brunet II, 813, Gamba 1368 and. Graesse II, 424. Second edition of one of the major works by Doni with slight changes to the first printing in 1552 and now for the first time with a very useful index. The work contains a stange mixture of gossip, anecdotes, political traetises, essays on gastronomy, wine and customs at the table, superstition, the printing of books etc. Grendler (Critics of the Italian World) explains the title as: "Things overheard on the marble steps" while sitting on the stairs of Santa Reparata in Florence. The dialogue about the art of printing at the beginning of the second book is actualy by Domenichi who critized Done very sharply when publishing it in a book of his own in 1562. - Very little browning, endpaper with an older quote from Aristophanes, few spots but mostly clean inside, upper corners bumped, else nice. Maniement d'armes d'arquebuses, mousquetz, & piques.Frankfurt, Wilhelm Hoffmann, 1609. 3 parts in 1 volume. 4to. With letterpress title within engraved border (including the imprint), and 3 series of 42, 43 and 32 full-page numbered woodcuts, showing exercises with the arquebus, musket and pike. Contemporary vellum, rebacked. [3], [1 blank], [43], [1 blank], [44], [36] ll. Rare first edition published in Germany, with woodcuts instead of engravings, of a military manual known in English as The exercise of arms, it was written and illustrated by Jacques de Gheyn and quickly became a famous pictorial army manual for use of officers to teach the young recruits how to handle their weapons: the arquebus (part 1), musket (part 2) and pike (part 3). The text, here in German and French, gives a short explanation of the illustrations. It gives an excellent picture of the successful army of the Dutch Republic after its reform by Prince Maurits, who (re)introduced exercises and discipline. It also immortalizes Prince Maurits as a military thinker and commander of the most disciplined army of his age. Some faint browning throughout, slightly more visible on a few leaves, and some foxing on title-page. SCRIVERIUS, Petrus.
Batavia illustrata, seu de Batavorum insula, Hollandia, Zelandia, Frisia, territorio Traiectensi et Gelria, scriptores varii notae melioris, nunc primùm collecti, simulqùe editi.Leiden, Lodewijk Elzevier [printed by Jan Paets Jacobszoon], 1609. 4to (19.5 x 14 cm). With many woodcut illustrations in text. Early 18th-century calf, richly gold-tooled spine with a red title-label and the crowned monogram of the Duke de La Force and the Dukes coat of arms in gold on the sides (probably of a later date). [8], 232, 56 184, 40 pp. First edition (first issue), in the original Latin, of a history of Batavia, the Latin name for the Low Countries, though the subtitle here restricts it to the northern territories that belonged to the young Dutch Republic: the Betuwe, Holland, Zeeland, Friesland, Utrecht (province) and Gelderland. It contains works by several different authors, opening with a brief letter by the compiler, the Dutch historian Petrus Scriverius (1576-1660), who wrote several historical works on the Low Countries. The first section is a history of Batavia, containing two works by Gerardus Noviomagus, also known as Gerardus Geldenhouwer (1482-1542). Next come two treatises dealing with the origin of the Batavians and other matters, written by Cornelius Aurelius (ca. 1460-1531), best known for his Divisiekroniek. It is followed by some letters by various authors, including one by Desiderius Erasmus, and some texts by Adrianus Barlandus (1486-1538). Also included is a list of important rulers of the Low Countries, with many woodcut portraits. The book closes with Henrik Aquili … [Click Below for Full Description]

GIUSTINIANO, Pompeo.
Delle guerre di Flandra libri VI. ... Posti in luce da Gioseppe Gamurini ...Antwerp, J. Trognesio, 1609. 4to. With engraved architectural title-page and 29 folding engraved maps and plans of sieges and fortifications. White sheepskin (ca. 1700 or possibly later). [4], 329, [1 blank], [15], [3 blank] pp. First edition, in the original Italian, of the only historical work by the army general Pompeo Giustiniano (1569-1616). Giustiniano learned the art of warfare in the Netherlands under Farnese and Spinola. His work on the war in Flanders is of great importance for military history as it was the only work written from the Spanish point of view. The large strategic plans show numerous besieged cities in the Netherlands in the years 1601 to 1609. A large part is devoted to the 1603 Siege of Ostende, where Giustiniano himself as commander in chief successfully attacked Maurits of Nassau, the future Prince of Orange. At that siege the Spanish army recaptured the city and the Dutch lost their last stronghold on the Flemish coast. With the bookplate of the Luton Library of John Crichton-Stuart (1793-1848). With some text leaves slightly browned but still in very good condition, most of the plates fine. The binding is also very good, with only the spine label slightly damaged. A first hand account, from the Spanish side, of the battles and sieges in Flanders during a crucial stage of the Dutch war of independence. Nijhoff, Bibl. Hist. Neerl. III, 649; Palau 102835; STCV 6624785 (4 copies, incl. 2 incomplete).

[AUTOGRAPH]. GROOT (GROTIUS), Hugo de.
[Autograph letter, signed, to the President and councillors of the Supreme Court of the Netherlands].[Netherlands], 1609. Letter on 2 half-sheets (31 x 20.5 cm). In Dutch. Letter by Hugo de Groot supporting the impoldering of the Wijckermeer, a lake situated between Beverwijk and Assendelft, north of the IJ: now a polder of ca. 700 hectares. Grotius writes in his capacity as public prosecutor of Holland, on behalf of Gerrit (VIII) van Assendelft. Gerrit's father Cornelis van Assendeft begun constructing the "Assendelftse dijk" ca. 1590 to secure the alluvial lands that had recently silted up. The city of Haarlem and others had protested and the Court had pronounced judgment on 6 April 1591. A later annotation suggests the Supreme Court on 15 December 1609 dismissed the appeal and put off judgement until the future. The original double-leaf separated into two leaves, a bit browned and marginal waterstains. Reasonable condition.

Peniculus foriarum elenchi Scaligeriani pro Societate Iesu, Maldonato, Delrio. Auctore Liberio Sanga Verino Cantabro ad Clarum Bonarscium Belgam."Metelloburgi Mattiacorum" [= Antwerp?], "apud haeredes Matthianos" [printed by Hendrik Swingen?], 1609. 12mo (14 x 9 cm). Contemporary limp sheepskin parchment. "103" [=203], [1 blank] pp. Rare First and only edition of a fierce attack on the brilliant French-born linguist and leading Protestant scholar Joseph Josephus Scaliger (1540-1609), professor at Leiden University, by Martin Antonio Delrio (1551-1608), a learned Jesuit jurist born in Antwerp as the son of a Spanish nobleman. In 1605, a war of words had broken out between Jesuits and Calvinists in a series of polemical works published under readily recognizable pseudonyms and with false imprints. One was an attack on Scaliger and others by the Jesuit Carolus Scribani. Scaliger joined in the fray under the pen-name M. de Lescalle with a Latin poem attacking Scribani, the Jesuit Society, Juan Maldonatus and Delrio. In the present work, with the text dated at the end 26 June 1606, but not published until 1609, Delrio responds with an satirical attack on Scaliger. The text set to the shape of a carafe or decanter is supposed to represent a drinking vessel containing humility and modesty, which Delrio thought Scaliger needed.Delrio had been one of the judges of the Inquisition in the Low Countries, the so-called "Blood Council". By his own account, his merciless Disquisitionem magicarum (624) waged war on swarms of witches laying waste to northern Europe, and on Muslims and (Prot … [Click Below for Full Description]

ARGENSOLA, Bartolome Leonardo de.
Conquista de las islas Malucas.[Madrid, Alonso Martin, 1609]. Small folio (22 x 30 cm). With an engraved architectural title-page showing an allegorical scene (the Moluccas represented by a native woman with feather headdress, cornucopia and sword, riding a crocodile, with the Spanish royal coat of arms in the sky) and a sleeping lion (representing the author?) in a separate cartouche below. Early 18th-century richly gold-tooled red morocco, each board with a large centrepiece a petit fers made partly with pointillé stamps. (Integral?) engraved title-page + [10], "407" [= 411], [1 blank] pp. First edition of the author's principal work, in the original Spanish, dedicated to King Philip III of Spain, whose father had untied the Portuguese and Spanish crowns in 1580. It centres on the Philippines and the Moluccas, but also discusses China, Java, Sumatra and Ceylon, and even "los estrechos Persico y Arabico" (p. 12). The Portuguese naval commander Afonso de Albuquerque had conquered Malacca by 1511, a few decades after Arabic merchants introduced Islam there. This provided a base to quickly establish Portuguese influence over the islands of the region. "Few narratives are written with so much judgment and elegance ... One of the most important works for the history of the Philippine islands ... The book also contains matter relating to Sir Francis Drake and American voyages, and to the history of Spanish and Portuguese exploration in the Indies" (Cox). "For the compilation of this work, the author had the command of all authentic manuscript relations, which were either in offi … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Aelius Donatus | edited by Henricus Glareanus
Erfurt: Jakob Singe, 1609. POSSIBLY PRINTED BEFORE GUTENBERG'S BIBLE (WELL, NOT THIS ONE EXACTLY) ¶ [128] p. | 8vo | A-H^8 | 157 x 95 mm ¶ Arguably the West's most popular and influential Latin grammar, here edited by Swiss humanist Heinrich Glarean, "well versed in Latin and Greek," whose edition dates back to at least 1535 (Fuller). The first half of the book tracks closely to Donatus's Ars Minor--the more fundamental of the fourth-century Roman grammarian's two grammatical works--while the second half adds conjugations for amo, doceo, lego, audio, fero, sum, and volo. This a remarkably large-print edition, with only eighteen lines to the page. Epigraphs from Quintilian and St. Jerome on the title page. ¶ Elementary Latin grammars proliferated during the middle ages, and continued into the age of print, many of them either clearly editions of or bearing strong resemblance to Donatus or the Ianua (which was often referred to and presented as a Donatus). Anonymous commentaries on Donatus abound in the manuscript tradition, many with added verb conjugations similar to ours here. "Vivien Law has shown how Donatus's genuine elementary grammar, written for native speakers, was unsuited to needs of medieval pupils who were learning Latin as a second language. On the one hand, medieval teachers responded by supplementing the Ars minor with additional grammatical material, including paradigms, declensions and conjugations omitted by Donatus as well as rules for the recognition of declensions unnecessary for native Latin speakers" (Black). On the other hand, teachers co … [Click Below for Full Description]

Letter by Hugo de Groot supporting the impoldering of the Wijckermeer, a lake situated between Beverwijk and Assendelft, north of the IJ: now a polder of ca. 700 hectares. A later annotation suggests the Supreme Court on 15 December 1609 dismissed the appeal and put off judgement until the future. The original double-leaf separated into two leaves, a bit browned and marginal waterstains. Rare volume with two works containing outlines for sermons on the book of Revelations and special days and occasions. Heinrich Bullinger preached on the book of Revelation in Zurich from 1554 until 1556. He was the only major reformer of the second generation who devoted a full-length work to this book. Bullinger gives in Latin model sermons that could be adapted by preachers throughout the Reformed churches of Europe. The hundred sermons, which were first published in 1557, obviously filled an important gap in the market of Protestant apocalyptic thought, for these sermons were reprinted and translated into French, German and Dutch in less than two years.)

[9], [3 blank] pp.A detailed report, apparently advising the Portuguese government on the dangers of Dutch incursions in Portuguese colonies, especially in Brazil. The report contains 30 numbered articles. Articles 1, 2 and 26 explicitly name Brazil, but many others name "India", which can refer to the Indies (Brazil was regarded as part of the West Indies). During the 12 Years' Truce (1609-1621), the Dutch agreed not to attack Portuguese ships or territories, but in 1621 the Dutch set up the West India Company to attempt to capture a great deal of the lucrative trade in the New World. The capture of Bahia in 1624 proved short-lived, the Portuguese retaking it in 1625, but in 1630 the Dutch captured Pernambuco and much of the surrounding territory, forming a Dutch colony in Brazil that they were to keep until 1654. The present document is undated, but its references to the Dutch "robberies" in Brazil and to the restoration show it dates after the capture and recapture of Bahia in 1624 and 1625, and apparently before the capture of Pernambuco in 1630. Another (shorter) version of the same report (some articles match nearly word for word), published by Da Silva Tullio, is apparently dated 1628, which seems to suit the present version as well. The ink or quill used damaged some of the paper resulting in the loss of several letters and words, mostly affecting the second and third leaf.

GIUSTINIANO, POMPEO (GIUSTINIANI, POMPEYO)
Anversa (Amberes): Ioachimo Trognesio, -, 1609. Fontis, 1 f., 329 p., 8 f., 29 grabados plegados; 25x19 cm.- Pergamino de época. Encuadernación desprendida parcialmente del comienzo del texto.Papel tostado. Giustiniani, Pompeyo. Ajaccio, Córcega (Francia), 1569 – Lucinico, Friule (Italia), 10.X.1616. [Click Below for Full Description]
