[BRAZIL - DUTCH INCURSIONS].
A detailed report, apparently advising the Portuguese government on the dangers of Dutch incursions in Portuguese colonies, especially in Brazil. The report contains 30 numbered articles. Articles 1, 2 and 26 explicitly name Brazil, but many others name "India", which can refer to the Indies (Brazil was regarded as part of the West Indies). During the 12 Years' Truce (1609-1621), the Dutch agreed not to attack Portuguese ships or territories, but in 1621 the Dutch set up the West India Company to attempt to capture a great deal of the lucrative trade in the New World. The capture of Bahia in 1624 proved short-lived, the Portuguese retaking it in 1625, but in 1630 the Dutch captured Pernambuco and much of the surrounding territory, forming a Dutch colony in Brazil that they were to keep until 1654. The present document is undated, but its references to the Dutch "robberies" in Brazil and to the restoration show it dates after the capture and recapture of Bahia in 1624 and 1625, and apparently before the capture of Pernambuco in 1630. Another (shorter) version of the same report (some articles match nearly word for word), published by Da Silva Tullio, is apparently dated 1628, which seems to suit the present version as well. The ink or quill used damaged some of the paper resulting in the loss of several letters and words, mostly affecting the second and third leaf.

Jodocus HONDIUS (1563 - 1612)
Incisione in rame, finemente colorata a mano, in ottime condizioni. "This is an attractive map by Jodocus Hondius showing the continent of Africa. ""Hondius map of Africa is an important transitional map, bridging the earlier work of Ortelius, Mercator and others, with the more modern maps of Willem Blaeu in 1608, Claesz. in 1617, and others. The geography for this map is taken from a variety of sources. Some of the interior of Africa is based on Mercator's 1595 map of Africa, but numerous additions and changes have been made. Hondius had access to the books of exploration of Africanus, Pigafetta (based on the travel account of Duarte Lopez), Ramusion, De Barros, and others. Orazio BRUNI o BRUNETTI (attivo a Siena primi decenni del XVII secolo)
Enhanced with arguments drawn from canon law, his Adversus Avaritiam outlines reasons to give alms to the church. More interesting, it says parents should bequeath their estates to the Church rather than their children; it is better for children to suffer want in this world to save their parents from damnation in the next. Acquaviva d'Aragona Andrea Matteo
. Homer; George Chapman, translator
London: printed for Samuel Macham, [1609]. First edition. The first twelve books of the Iliad as translated by George Chapman. Seven parts of his translation had appeared in 1598, but this is the first appearance of the other five books. The final twelve books weren't published until 1611. Bound in 17th century speckled calf, rebacked to style with morocco spine label and gilt to spine and boards. Bookplate to front pastedown. Pages (225 x 151mm) collating: [16], 218, [2, blank], [14, dedicatory verses]. Lacking final blank Ff2, as well as two leaves of dedicatory verses, Dd2 and Dd3 (possibly cancels, see below). "The two leaves which in this copy occur after Sig Dd are not conjugate, although they happen to be properly watermarked in the present as well as the British Museum copies. Sig [Dd3] is on heavier paper than Sig [Dd2]. The latter which is rarely present contains on recto a sonnet to Lady Wrothe, and on verso another to the Countess of Montgomery. It may have been printed as Sig [Ff2], which leaf, however, was originally a genuine blank. Sig [Dd3], containing the sonnet to Queen Anne, berso blank, is more frequently found and in some copies is inserted immediately preceding the text... if these conjectures are correct, it is difficult to explain why quire Dd should have had only two leaves, as in most copies it still has, except there was a cancellation." Pforzheimer 168. Some leaves with toning or minor soiling, three leaves with professionally closed tears of about four inches (V1-V3), a few leaves trimmed a bit close on the outer margin, affecting a letter here … [Click Below for Full Description]

BRAZIL - DUTCH INCURSIONS].

Jewel, John; Anne Bacon, translator
John Norton. First edition, 1609, of his collected works, in English. Folio (13 inches; 33 cm) in late 19th century half calf and marbled boards, red spine label. All three titles have their own title pages; there is no general title page. (54) 652; (41) 472 (7); 153 pp. Thus, this copy has three complete works by Jewel, but is INCOMPLETE; complete copies have a general title page, and the first work should be 'A Sermon Made in Latine at Oxenford' (34pp prefatory material and 62pp text). After 'A View of a Seditious Bull' paginated continuously to page 291, should be: "An exposition upon the two epistles of the Apostle Saint Paul to the Thessalonians" and "Certaine sermons preached before the Queens Maiestie" -- each have separate dated title page but pagination is continuous. Thus, our copy lacks nearly 100 pp at the beginning and 138 pp. at the end. On the upside, the condition of this is superb; the binding shows rubbing and wear to corners and joints, with some restoration to both inner hinges and outer joints, but the text of the three works is incredibly bright and wide-margined. Only blemish is to pp. 644-650 of the first book, some stains and light wear......John Jewel (1522-1571) started his Christian life as a Catholic, and on publishing some letters as a Catholic, was forced to flee, ending up first in Frankfort and then in Padua, but not wedded to Catholicism, he made a concerted effort to redeem himself as an English Protestant and so gained enough favor in the court of Elizabeth I that he became Bishop of Salisbury in 1559, and began authoring texts against Ca … [Click Below for Full Description]
