PEREZ DE LARA Alonso
1610 - Folio 2 parts [20], 338; 146, [20]pp. Modern paper boards. Madrid: Imprenta real, A handsome, crisp copy of the first edition of this immensely detailed account of how the Spanish imperial administration acted in the spiritual sphere . The Bul[l]a de la santa Cruzada granted by the Pope was a bull granting indulgences to those who fight against the infidel or contribute to the costs of the struggle ( the 'tesoro de la Iglesia militante'). It was first granted to the Spanish monarch in 1509, and was thereafter renewed and its scope enlarged by successive popes. The work gives details of the origins, development and organisation of this, how it was to be preached, how the indulgences were to be offered, the spiritual and financial administration of all connected with the Bulla, together with details of where and how the various editions of the bull were to be produced throughout the Spanish dominions, and to which citieds and towns various 'cedulas' etc. were to be sent, and how worded. There are in part 1 long lists of administrative centres in all of Spanish America, the Filippines etc. The section dealing with the printing of the Bullas is particularly interesting: in Spain they were to be printed in Toledo in the Dominicans monastery of S.Peter the Martyr, and at Valladolid in the monastery of Our Lady de Prado, where Rodrigo Calderon was to be in charge; for the Indies at Seville at the Hieronymite monastery of S.Lorenço, although the actual printing was to be carried out at the Monasterio de Buenavista; for Sicily the press was that at the Jesuit College in Paler … [Click Below for Full Description]

A huge lake Chiamai between India and China is the source for four large rivers flowing to the south. Attractive strapwork title and scale cartouches.

Full morocco binding by Hardy. Spine with five raised bands and gilt title in miniature; boards with elaborate gilt floral and pictorial patterns, including fleurs de lis vignettes and morocco onlays in various colours by "cSe" (monogram). All edges gilt.= A very rare work published on the occasion of the death of the French king Henry IV (born 1553), who was murdered by a religious fanatic on 14 May 1610. Bound by the French bookbinder ‘Hardy', most probably Hardy Mennil (see Brunet, “La reliure ancienne et moderne", 1884). With a handwritten dedication by the ‘décorateur de ce livre', C. E. Stewart, to the Baron de Barante, and dated 26 mars 1924. An original letter, signed by Henry IV, dated 31 mars 1610 (that is, less than six weeks before his violent death) and by his Foreign Minister and Lord Chancellor, Nicolas Brûlart de Sillery (1544-1624) is added. After Henry's death, his widow, Maria de Medici, served as regent for their nine-year-old son, Louis XIII, until 1617. The letter with some vague dampstaining, the edges a bit irregular. The book in excellent condition, the binding fresh, without shelf-wear. A unique copy of a very rare work. Not in Brunet.

Knolles, Richard, 1550-1610
London: Printed by Adam Islip, 1610. Second Edition:- TITLE CONTINUATION: - "and emperours". Richard Knolles ( late 1540s - 1610 ) was born in Northamptonshire. He received both his BA and his MA from Lincoln College, Oxford in 1565 and 1570 respectively. Knolles’ Historie is based heavily on a range of sixteenth-century printed chronicles and reports. It is, therefore, essentially a synthesis of other works, but a carefully crafted synthesis produced in English. Nothing of this scale and detail had appeared before, in English, on the Ottomans, and it would be another fifty years before a subsequent work in English would become the authority on the subject. Despite this fact, both Samuel Jonson and Lord Byron turned to Knolles centuries later, and both alluded to the richness of his prose style. William Shakespeare, moreover, likely used Knolles’ work (and possibly an earlier manuscript version) as a source for his Othello (ca. 1603-1604). This is the second edition of this major work in English but is enlarged from the first edition, and some may consider the more sought after as a result. In super overall condition, now professionally preserved and bound in Black and Navy Leather & Boards, with gilt embellished spine within the 5 raised bands. Now with new endpapers and pastedowns which are sympathetic to the period of the book. Consequently is bound tightly, and with all contents clean and secure. The early pages have a little fray at edges/margins, and a degree of creasing, but not as to damage the main text { images to follow }. The title was originally published in 16 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Compiled from a range of Byzantine and western histories, travellers' reports and letters, together with material from Leunclavius's recent Latin translation of a late fifteenth-century Ottoman chronicle, Knolles's was the first major work on the subject to appear in English, and was quickly recognized as a masterpiece of narrative synthesis -DNB. LIPSIUS, Justus.
Twelve of Lipsius's most important works, mostly on the ancient Roman world (antiquities, customs, military history and technology, and philosophy), together with his famous Qui ad principatum maximè spectant (Mirror of princes) and in volume 3 his letters. Christoffel Plantin's son-in-law Jan Moretus, who took over his great Antwerp printing and publishing office, published all twelve editions before Lipsius's death. Items 3 and 7 are first editions, and nearly all these works were first published by Plantin or Moretus. They were uniformly bound in blind-tooled pigskin, probably for a Praemonstratensian monastery near Ravensburg ca. 1610. Justus Lipsius (1547-1606) was one of the leading classical scholars and humanists of the Low Countries in the second half of the 16th century. The first four works are nicely illustrated with engravings by Theodore Galle, Pieter van der Borcht and others.Volume 1 with a few mostly marginal wormholes through most of the volume, but more serious in the last few and especially the first few leaves, but otherwise in good condition, with an occasional minor wormhole in volume 2, and some browning and occasional minor stains in volume 3. The bindings are somewhat rubbed with wormholes in volume 1, but also still generally good, with most of the tooling clearly preserved, the binding structure sound, and only a couple worm holes in volumes 2 and 3, one clasp lacking. The spine of volume 3 was probably covered with paper, later removed but leaving traces of paste. Contents:-Saturnalium sermonum libri duo, qui de gladiatoribus.
