Orazio BRUNI o BRUNETTI (attivo a Siena primi decenni del XVII secolo)

Salvian; Salvianus
1609. Give to the Church, Not to Your Children Salvian (Salvianus) [c.390-c.484 CE]. Macherentinus, Johannes [1540-1610], Editor. Quis Dives Salvus. Salviani Massiliensis Presbyteri Adversus Avaritiam Sub Nomine Timothei, Ad Ecclesiam Catholicam Epistolares Libri Quatuor Vere Aurei, Digniq[ue] qui in Omnium Linguas Transferantur Nunc Primum In Certa Capita Distincti, Scholiis Marginalibus, Atq[ue] Annotatione Consensus Sanctorum Patrum Illustrati: Per Joannem Macherentinum de Societate Jesu Theologum. Trier: Ex Officina Typographica Henrici Bock, 1609. 28, 226, [10] pp. Quarto (7-1/4" x 6-1/4"). Contemporary flexible vellum, later lettering piece to spine, ties lacking. Light rubbing to extremities, some soiling and spotting, vellum just beginning to crack through pastedowns. Title printed within woodcut typographical border, woodcut head-pieces, tail-pieces and decorated initials. Moderate toning to text, light foxing to a few leaves. Early annotations to endleaves, interior otherwise clean. * First edition (by Macherentinus). Salvian of Gaul was an important Christian thinker and canonist of the fifth century. Enhanced with arguments drawn from canon law, his Adversus Avaritiam outlines reasons to give alms to the church. More interesting, it says parents should bequeath their estates to the Church rather than their children; it is better for children to suffer want in this world to save their parents from damnation in the next. Salvian also has much to say on the duty of self-denial by priests, nuns and monks. Macherentinus, the editor of this edition, was a Jesuit theol … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

First edition of a richly illustrated history of the Dutch East India Company, including the lives of all 28 Dutch Governors-General arranged chronologically from Pieter Both, appointed in 1609, to Jacob Mossel, appointed in 1752. The book ends with an interesting treatise on the actual state of the Dutch East Indies, the VOC and the means to redress the causes of its decline in the last 50 years or so, by the late Governor-General Gustaaf Willem Baron d'Imhoff (1705-1750 in Batavia), who was appointed Governor-Géeneral in 1740 and stayed in Batavia from 1742 onwards. The many interesting portraits, maps, plans and views are by the artist, engraver and print-seller Jacobus van der Schley (1715-1779), a pupil of Bernard Picart. He based many of his nautical charts on those of J.N. Bellin, Ingénieur hydrographe de la Marine at Paris, a chartmaker whose high standards assured the overall accuracy of these charts (Tooley, p. 27). The book gives a wide variety of contemporary information on the Dutch East Indies, as well on other Dutch colonies such as Ceylon, Formosa, Australia and the Cape of Good Hope. With the dated owner's signature, on the front paste-down, of Professor Charles R. Boxer (1904-2000), one of the best British historians of early European overseas expansion and empire building in Asia and elsewhere, who also made some annotations on the fly-leaves. In very good condition and untrimmed, with deckles intact, giving very large margins, with only a few minor marginal stains or defects in the last few leaves. The marbled paper sides are damaged, but the … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

1609. HOMER [TRANSLATED BY GEORGE CHAPMAN (c. 1559-1634)]. Homer Prince of Poets: Translated According to the Greek, in Twelve Books of his Iliads. London: Printed [by Humphrey Lownes] for Samuel Macham, [c. 1609]. This very rare 1609 edition of Chapman's Homer is the first time that his translations of books three, four, five, six, and twelve appeared in print, books one, two, and seven through eleven having appeared in 1598. A complete translation of all twenty-four books appeared in 1611, and a collected edition of the Iliad and Odyssey was published in 1616. Lacking in this copy is signature Dd3 which is typical, but the sometimes absent Dd4 is present and bound after the title-page. Chapman's English translation has been praised by many English poets, including Coleridge and Keats (who honored the translation with a Sonnet, 'On First Looking into Chapman's Homer'). Title-page in facsimile. Closed tear repairs to a couple leaves, wear to edges of a few leaves. Occasional damp-staining. Some irregular pagination but aside from title, Dd3, and the Ff2 blank, the collation is complete. Cc4 blank is present. 4to (26 x 17cm), [18], 118pp. (i.e. 198), [14]. Rebound in modern calf.
Quelques rousseurs.Hauser, IV 2627.

Augustae Vindelicorum [Augsburg], David Franck, 1609. Presentation copy from the author to Conrad Pius Peutinger (1520-1613), son of the Augsburg diplomat and humanist. Attractive edition in very good condition of prolific mathematician, medic, astronomer and philosopher Georg Henisch's (1549-1618) Latin translation of the Sphaera. Henisch's first translation of the Sphaera was printed in Augsburg in 1575 as part of his Tabulae Institutionum Astronomicarum; for this, the first edition of the work on its own, he revised the text and added a commentary, based, as he writes, on his lectures at the Gymnasium St Anna in Augsburg where he taught logic and mathematics. After the translation and before the commentary is a discussion of the subject matter, including a list of definitions and hypotheses from geometry, physics and astronomy (Todd, 47). While attributed to fourth-century neo-Platonist Proclus, the Sphaera was in fact an excerpt of four chapters of Geminus' Elementa Astronomiae, written in the first century BC; mistakes of attribution likely took place in the fifteenth century (Todd, 12) and were addressed only a century later, in 1585, by Francesco Barozzi who identified them as a portion of the Elementa rather than an independent … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

BOURGEOIS [BOURSIER], Louise (1563-1636)
Paris, chez A. Saugrain, 1609. 8vo (167 x 95 mm), ff [12] 12 [recte 3, without terminal blank], with fine engraved allegorical title and two engraved portraits (the author and Marie de Medici, Queen of France); a fine copy, in nineteenth-century French brown morocco, panelled in blind with gilt corner ornaments, spine gilt, slightly worn. First edition, first issue, very rare, of the first obstetrics book written by a woman to be published, and a work that founded obstetrics as a science. It was one of the most popular and influential textbooks of its day, and was credited by Jean Astruc with greatly advancing French midwifery. 'She was one of the pioneers of scientific midwifery; her Observations was the vade mecum of contemporary midwives' (Garrison and Morton).Louise Bourgeois became interested in midwifery after the birth of her first child, with the result that she studied medicine and obstetrics practice under her barber-surgeon husband, Martin Boursier, and his teacher the great Ambroise Paré. The guild of midwives tried to oppose her application for a licence, fearing her increasing reputation amongst Paré's circle of surgeons. Their opposition was of no avail, however, and she was summoned to attend the confinement of Marie de Medici, Queen of France, for the birth of the future Louis XIII. She thus became midwife to the French court for 27 years, and delivered all the children of Marie de Medici. The death by puerperal sepsis of the child of the Duchess of Orléans, the princess Marie de Bourbon-Montpensier, in 1627 brought an end to her reign at the age of 64, and … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

[BRAZIL - DUTCH INCURSIONS].
A detailed report, apparently advising the Portuguese government on the dangers of Dutch incursions in Portuguese colonies, especially in Brazil. The report contains 30 numbered articles. Articles 1, 2 and 26 explicitly name Brazil, but many others name "India", which can refer to the Indies (Brazil was regarded as part of the West Indies). During the 12 Years' Truce (1609-1621), the Dutch agreed not to attack Portuguese ships or territories, but in 1621 the Dutch set up the West India Company to attempt to capture a great deal of the lucrative trade in the New World. The capture of Bahia in 1624 proved short-lived, the Portuguese retaking it in 1625, but in 1630 the Dutch captured Pernambuco and much of the surrounding territory, forming a Dutch colony in Brazil that they were to keep until 1654. The present document is undated, but its references to the Dutch "robberies" in Brazil and to the restoration show it dates after the capture and recapture of Bahia in 1624 and 1625, and apparently before the capture of Pernambuco in 1630. Another (shorter) version of the same report (some articles match nearly word for word), published by Da Silva Tullio, is apparently dated 1628, which seems to suit the present version as well. The ink or quill used damaged some of the paper resulting in the loss of several letters and words, mostly affecting the second and third leaf.
