PRIMERA PARTE DE LOS COMMENTARIOS REALES, QUE TRATAN DEL ORIGEN DE LOS YNCAS, REYES QUE FUERON DEL PERU, DE SU IDOLATRIA, LEYES, Y GOVIERNO EN PAZ Y EN GUERRA

Lisbon: Pedro Crasbeeck, 1609.. [10],264 leaves, plus engraved plate. Small folio. Contemporary vellum, manuscript spine title, remnants of pigskin ties. Minor foxing and soiling, some light dampstaining to top edge. Very good. First edition of the "Royal Commentaries" of the great half Spanish, half Inca historian, Garcilaso de la Vega. The Inca was the foremost historian of early Peru, and his works are the basis of our knowledge of Incan history. Born in Cuzco, the son of a Spanish nobleman and an Indian princess, he was a second cousin to the last Incan rulers of Peru. He left Peru as a youth and lived in Spain the rest of his life. The PRIMERA PARTE... deals entirely with the Incan empire and the conquest of Peru. The Spanish critic, Menendez y Pelayo, called it "the most genuinely American book that has ever been written, perhaps the only one in which a reflection of the soul of the conquered raced has survived." Garrison-M. 3806. - HOH 388. - Waller 2626. - Wellcome I, 1940. - Erste Ausgabe. "During the Middle Ages, tuberculosis of the lymph glands of the neck was very common and was known variously as scrofula, struma, and the 'Kings Evil'. For centuries it was believed that the 'royal touch' could cure this disease and many English and French monarchs were in the habit of touching their afflicted subjects during major religious holidays. Du Laurens was a firm believer in the effectiveness of the 'royal touch' and, in this work, reports that King Henry IV., often touched and healed as many as 1500 indiviudals at a time" (HOH). TWO SIGNIFICANT DUTCH VOYAGES TO THE FAR EAST IN EARLY FRENCH TRANSLATIONS, BOUND TOGETHER AS ISSUED].

Amsterdam: Cornille Nicolas, 1609. - Two volumes bound in one. Described in greater detail below. Folio. Contemporary paper-covered boards, rebacked in calf, leather label. From the Library of the Earls of Macclesfield, with engraved 1860 bookplate on front pastedown and blind pressure stamp on first two printed leaves of first title. Two highly important Dutch voyages, both in their second French editions and bound together as issued in 1609. These two voyages represent the initial Dutch exploration and expansion to the East Indies, a significant element in a global commercial enterprise which was to develop throughout the 17th century. The two foundation accounts in the present volume, originally issued together by the Amsterdam printer, Cornille Nicolas, include: 1) [Lodewijcksz, Willem]: PREMIER LIVRE DE L'HISTOIRE DE LA NAVIGATION AUX INDES ORIENTALES, PAR LES HOLLANDOIS. Amsterdam: Cornille Nicolas, 1609. 53 leaves. Titlepage with engraved map, forty-five in-text engravings (including three maps), seventeen in-text woodcut illustrations, and one plate on separate leaf following printed text. Moderate soiling on titlepage, slight edge wear to first few leaves. Second French edition, following the first French edition of 1598. Lodewijcksz gives an account of the first Dutch expedition to the East Indies under Cornelius Houtman, from 1595 to 1597. The information collected by Houtman on the spice trade convinced the Dutch they could compete with Portugal's monopoly in the East Indies, and his narrative served to initiate the explosion of Dutch trading at the turn of the century. "Like the English, Houtman's men suffered so severely from scurvy that they had to put in at the Cape of Good Hope and at Antongil Bay in Madagascar to recuperate. But they then sailed straight across the Indian Ocean to the Straits of Sunda and dropped anchor at Bantam in Java without the loss of a ship. At this port, the center of the Javanese pepper trade, a long time was spent. Both natives and Portuguese showed considerable hostility, and Houtman and some of his men were imprisoned. However, the Dutch succeeded in making a commercial treaty and departed with a good cargo. They proceeded eastward to Bali, and then returned along the south coast of Java, thereby acquiring a more correct impression of the width of the island than had prevailed and laid the ghost of Java's being the northern part of the Southern Continent.the Dutch skipper had enough to show for his venture to inspire the merchants of Amsterdam with a determination to exploit the trade" - Penrose. 2) Neck, Jacob Cornelissoon van: LE SECOND LIVRE, IOURNAL OU COMPTOIR, CONTENANT LE VRAY DISCOURS ET NARRATION HISTORIQUE. Amsterdam: Cornille Nicolas, 1609. Two parts. 22,[8] leaves. Titlepages with engraved illustrations, twenty-two in-text engravings (including one map), two in-text woodcuts. Second French edition, following the first French edition of 1601. Van Neck, who represented the Verre Company, commanded three ships which were part of the first successful Dutch trading voyage to the region. The other two ships were commanded by Wybrand Van Warwijck and Jacob Van Heemskerk. Van Neck's vessel became separated from the other two after rounding the Cape of Good Hope, and the three did not reunite again until his arrival in Java in late December 1598. Unlike his Dutch predecessor, Cornelis Houtman, who three years earlier had seized the port of Bantam, Van Neck dealt diplomatically with the natives. "Rather than rejecting the inflated prices asked by the local ruler, he offered to pay over the odds in order to cement a lasting relationship.Van Neck's was the most profitable of the pre-VOC [Dutch East India Company] voyages. Despite the apparently high price paid for spices, he netted a profit of 300 per cent on his overall costs. In 1601, fourteen fleets comprising sixty-five ships sailed for the East Indies, but by that time competition between rival Dutch operators, as well as with the Portuguese, had inflated prices

Amsterdam: Cornille Nicolas, . 1609 - Two parts. 22,[8] leaves (second part with its own titlepage). Folio. Modern three-quarter morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. A few leaves with worm tracks expertly repaired. Very good. Second French edition, following the first French edition of 1601, of this important voyages narrative, describing the initial Dutch exploration and expansion to the East Indies, a significant element in a global commercial enterprise which was to develop throughout the 17th-century. While focused on activity in the East Indies, European Americana notes that the text includes references to Brazil and tobacco from the West Indies. The second part of this 1609 French edition (which has its own titlepage), is an eight-page appendix of words spoken in Java and Malay, includes word lists in French (printed in roman type), Malay (in italic type), and Javanese (in civilité).

Lyon: Lugduni, apud Horatium Cardon, 1609.

Madrid, Alonso Martin, 1609. - Small folio. Engraved allegorical title by P. Perret + [5]f + 411 (misnumbered 407) + [1 blank]p. Woodcut ornaments and decorative initials. Contemporary limp vellum; top of spine repaired; remains of ties. First edition of this classic on Spanish and Portuguese exploits in the East Indies, an important source for the conquest of the Philippines (1564-72) and the Spice Islands under Miguel Lopez de Legaspi, and the early history of trade. It also contains sections on China, Indonesia, and Ceylon, as well as many interesting early references to Japan and the Japanese, largely relating to trade and to Christian missionary work. The numerous American references include the voyage of Sir Francis Drake (pp105-108), Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa’s voyage of exploration to the Straits of Magellan (pp119-131), special mention of Peru, the Patagonian giants, and Columbus. Argensola (1562-1631), royal chaplain and rector of Villahermosa, was commissioned to write this highly praised work by the Council of the Indies on the occasion of the Spanish recapture of the Moluccan islands of Ternate and Tidore in 1606. It is based on primary sources consulted in the archives of the Indies and thus comprises significant historical documentation. The fine engraved title within an architectural border represents an allegory of the Spanish conquest of the Moluccas or Spice Islands: the amazon queen ‘Maluca’ wearing a feathered crown is sitting astride a crocodile, her left hand placed on her sword, her right hand upholding a floral cornucopia, gazing at a rainbow reflecting the arms of the Spanish empire on which the sun never sets; the background is a lush tropical landscape with smouldering volcano; shells and flowers are strewn in the foreground. Engraved title lightly shaved in tailend margin, affecting a few letters of imprint, its right margin neatly strengthened, a few minor stains, otherwise an excellent fresh copy in its original binding. Maniement d'armes d'arquebuses, mousquetz, & piques.Frankfurt, Wilhelm Hoffmann, 1609. 3 parts in 1 volume. 4to. With letterpress title within engraved border (including the imprint), and 3 series of 42, 43 and 32 full-page numbered woodcuts, showing exercises with the arquebus, musket and pike. Contemporary vellum, rebacked.

VD 17, 39:124359A (3 copies); WorldCat (6 copies, incl. 2 the same); cf. Cockle 79 (other ed.); Jähns, pp. 1005-1007 (other ed.); Lipperheide 2057-2060 (other eds.). Rare first edition published in Germany, with woodcuts instead of engravings, of a military manual known in English as The exercise of arms, it was written and illustrated by Jacques de Gheyn and quickly became a famous pictorial army manual for use of officers to teach the young recruits how to handle their weapons: the arquebus (part 1), musket (part 2) and pike (part 3). The text, here in German and French, gives a short explanation of the illustrations. It gives an excellent picture of the successful army of the Dutch Republic after its reform by Prince Maurits, who (re)introduced exercises and discipline. It also immortalizes Prince Maurits as a military thinker and commander of the most disciplined army of his age. Some faint browning throughout, slightly more visible on a few leaves, and some foxing on title-page. Binding rebacked and a few stains on the sides. Good copy.

Dell'immitatione di Christo Nostro Sig.re Nel Quale Si Raccolgono i Beni Ch'abbiamo in Christo Signor Nostro E Che Si Communico a Quei, Che l'Immitano [The Imitation of Christ, By Francisco Arias, Translated Into Italian] - In 3 Volumes

Bartolomeo Zannetti. Hardcover. B00LSPSB70 In Italian. 1609, 1611, 1615 Bartolomeo Zannetti, A Spese Medesimo Zannetti, di Agostino Arditi, & Gioseppe Ambrosi (Rome, Italy), three 6 3/4 x 8 1/2 inches tall x 2 inches thick full vellum bound volumes, monastic-lettered titles to spines, (Vol. 1) [30], 664, (Vol. 2) [20], 704, [26], (Vol. 3) [24], 569, [43] pp., complete. The original vellum bindings are characteristically worn and soiled, lacking their original leather ties, with some cracking and separation, but still quite sound. The contents have sporadic minor foxing and age toning. Overall, despite these flaws, a very good copy of this rare, 400-year-old devotional work, with a splendid shelf appearance. Note that this is a heavy and oversized set, so additional postage will be required for international or priority orders. ~AA~ Francisco Arias (1533-1605) was a Spanish Catholic author, known as a writer of ascetical treatises. This is the first edition of the Italian translation of his work, 'The Imitation of Christ,' not to be confused with the better-known Catholic devotional work by Thomas a Kempis (circa 1380-1471). Arias was born in Seville and joined the Society of Jesus at the age of twenty-six. He studied in Alcala and was later professor of scholastic theology at Cordoba, and professor of moral theology at Trigueros. He also served as rector of the colleges at Trigueros and Cadiz. Arias was commonly regarded as a saint, and was known for his gift of prayer and his spirit of penance. He was especially devoted to the care of blacks, Moors, and the inmates of hospitals and prisons. Arias was held in high esteem by John of Avila, and his works are recommended by St. Francis of Sales in his 'Introduction to a Devout Life.' In addition to 'Imitation of Christ,' he authored at least seven other works: Spiritual Profit, Treatise on the Rosary, Imitation of Our Lady, Mental Prayer, The Use of the Sacraments, The Promises of God, The Turpitude and Grievousness of Sin. . Good. 1615. First Edition.

        Opera

Mogvntiae - Antonii Hierati, 1609 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. %0D%0AAn impressiveedition of the works of S. Bonaventura Cardinalis. %0D%0AComplete in four volumes. %0D%0ACarefully revised, and enlarged. %0D%0ASaint Bonaventure, O. F. M. (Italian: San Bonaventura; 1221 15 July 1274), born Giovanni di Fidanza, was an Italian medieval scholastic theologian and philosopher. The seventh Minister General of the Order of Friars Minor, he was also a Cardinal Bishop of Albano. He was canonised on 14 April 1482 by Pope Sixtus IV and declared a Doctor of the Church in the year 1588 by Pope Sixtus V. He is known as the Seraphic Doctor (Latin: Doctor Seraphicus). Many writings believed in the Middle Ages to be his are now collected under the name Pseudo-Bonaventura. %0D%0AIn form and intent the work of St. Bonaventure is always the work of a theologian; he writes as one for whom the only angle of vision and the proximate criterion of truth is the Christian faith. This fact influences his importance for the history of philosophy; when coupled with his style, it makes Bonaventure perhaps the least accessible of the major figures of the thirteenth century. This is true, not because he is a theologian, but because philosophy interests him largely as a praeparatio evangelica, as something to be interpreted as a foreshadow of or deviation from what God has revealed. %0D%0AIn a way that is not true of Aquinas or Albert or Scotus, Bonaventure does not survive well the transition from his time to ours. It is difficult to imagine a contemporary philosopher, Christian or not, citing a passage from Bonaventure to make a specifically philosophical point. %0D%0AOne must know philosophers to read Bonaventure, but the study of Bonaventure is seldom helpful for understanding philosophers and their characteristic problems. Bonaventure as a theologian is something else again, of course, as is Bonaventure the edifying author. It is in those areas, rather than in philosophy proper, that his continuing importance must be sought. %0D%0ACondition: %0D%0AIn full morocco leather bindings with gilt lettering to the spines. Externally, worn. Both boards are detached but present on volume I, both boards are also detached but present on volume II, both boards are held by cords only on volume III and both boards are detached but present on volume IV. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly browned and age-toned. There are library labels to the front pastedowns and recto of front free end papers in all volumes. Overall: GOOD ONLY%0D%0A.

Paris: Robert Fouet, 1609. Cioranescu 35833. 12mo. 19th century three quarter red morocco. Leaf of title, verso blank; 12pp. epistre a M. De Castlenav; 2pp. epigram; 1p. In Zoilum; 5pp. verses by P. De Gue, P. Ducasse, P. Vincens; 99 leaves of text; 3pp. verse A. La Puiade. Collation a11, A-H12, I5 (I2 missigned E2). Title page engraving of four figures conversing: three women (two seated) and one man standing before them. Very good clean copy with slight darkening of text. Le Lict d'honneur is a romance written in a flowery and sentimental style that takes the hero to the New World. Reynier notes that, while the story is set in Mexico in the town of Temistitan, there is nothing in the characters drawn in the novel which characterizes manners of that country. Intras was writing at the beginning of the early modern novel in France. The subject matter and style were relatively original at the beginning of the 17th century, although they were heavily adopted by novelists in the second quarter. Forgotten for his excesses of poetic writing and his lack of plot, Intras was revisited if not revived in the 19th century "Jean d' Intras, of Bazas, fertile and bombastic novelist , author of odd works with disordered metaphors and mystical melanges" (Mailliet). Overall, it is generally felt that his style while extravagant was influential on French early modern prose by developing a more complex dramatic tone than his antecedents. Intras was from Languedoc writing in the Gascon dialect. The basis of his nouvelles were the Graeco-Latin classics and the Italian romances of the mid-16th century. Regarding Intras' popularity in his own time, he may have had a following since three of his other novels were also published in 1609 by Fouet: Le dvel de Tithamante; Le portraict de la vraye amante; Le desespoir amoureux. These may have been part of a collected edition. Ref: Mailliet, "Gascons de Jadis." p. 395 In Revue politique et litteraire: revue bleue.

Rome: 1609.. Rome: 1609. 8vo (147 x 91 mm). [16], 159, [1 blank] pp. 3 full-page engravings signed Iulius Francischinus formis, the first two with permission note dated Rome 1604; woodcut arms of the dedicatee Michelangelo Tonti on title, small woodcut of the Virgin and Child with caption Tu es Protetrix mea on verso of permission leaf. 3-line errata at end. Many shoulder notes cropped. Modern stiff parchment, edges blue-stained. Provenance: Jesuits of Bamberg, Coll. Bamb. Soc. Jesu, inscription at end; removed from a Sammelband, old index tab on title-leaf. ***& & Very rare (unrecorded) edition of a treatise on the afterlife, illustrated with unusually expressive engravings by a little-known engraver, Giulio Franceschini. & & The author, identified on the title as Vicar of the Church of Santa Maria in Rome, Via Lata, explores Hell, Purgatory and Paradise in that order and in great detail, along the way skewering Protestants and providing answers to skeptics. Working in a late Mannerist style, the composer of the engravings succeeds in conveying the terror of Hell through the enlarged head of a screaming man, emerging from the flames and taunted by hideous monster-devils; Purgatory is a sorrowful, hesitant soul, a tear in one eye, still sitting in flames, but with angels carrying aloft rescued souls visible in the skies above; while Paradise shows a calm and confident long-tressed woman, her eyes directed heavenwards, surrounded by the expected clouds and angels.& & No other copies located. Not in ICCU, which lists one other work by Potenza, from the same press, Del sacerdotio euangelico libri due, 1606, which evidently uses the same woodblock of the Virgin.

Garrison-M. 3806. Einband bestossen. Am oberen Kapital mit kleiner Fehlstelle.
