Kirsten, Petri. 1577-1640.
Typis Arabicis, ac sumptibus authoris, in officina Baumanniana, Breslau, 1608. 10 pp. [1], Arabic text with parallel Latin translation, slightly browned pages, otherwise in very good condition. EXTREMELY RARE SOLE EDITION. First work printed in the Breslau printing office of Georg Baumann’s widow Magdalena with Arabic types, containing the Lord’s Prayer, Psalm 50 and the first Sura of the Qur’an in Arabic text with parallel Latin translation. This work is also considered to be the first Arabic-language publication in Germany. The pioneering Arabist and physician Peter Kirsten started a private press in Breslau (Wroclaw) in 1607 (cf. Reske 130). His Arabic typeface, which shows the influence of the Medicean types, was cut by Peter von Selau. "Kirsten studied Arabic mainly because he hoped it would prove useful for reading Avicenna and other physicians in their original language, rather than in the faulty translations available, for he had been taught at medical school that a good practitioner would need to be a good Avicennist, and could more readily do without Latin than without Arabic" (cf. Fück). Kirsten himself financed the entire press run. The "Qanun" of Ibn Sina and Kirsten's "Tria specimina characterum arabicorum" (Bible excerpts and the first sura of the Qur’an in Arabic and Latin parallel text) are followed by a three-part Arabic grammar rarely encountered complete and several Biblical studies with an Arabist slant. These were the first books printed in Germany from an Arabic typeface. Roper notes that Kirsten "created a superior type-face, with some calligraphic q … [Click Below for Full Description]

(de Thou Jacques Auguste), Jacobi Borniti; Gaspare Antonio Tesauro.
Hanoviae & Francofurti: Typis Wechelianous & Jacobi Fischeri, 1608 & 1610. Hanoviae & Francofurti:: Typis Wechelianous & Jacobi Fischeri,. 1608 & 1610.. First edition of each title. Bound together for the library of French historian and book collector Jacques Auguste de Thou (1553 - 1617). Quarto brown polished calf with COAT OF ARMS OF DE THOU & SECOND WIFE, Gasparde de La Chastre, pressed in gilt at centers of both boards and with their monogram to four of the six spine panels. Borniti (aka Jacob Bornitz, c. 1560 -1625) wrote several works on economics, trade and political philosophy. He worked at the court of Rudolf II as a political administrator and this tract on the minting and preservation of coins within a republic, dedicated to Rudolf II, was probably his best-known work (Sothebys 2016 catalog note). Tesauro (1563-1628) was a magistrate of the Duke of Savoy and wrote about matters of Roman law and monetary theory. Small piece missing from head of spine, light rubbing to edges and along outer spine hinges, very few insect holes to interior with none affecting text. Altogether very good with pages only mildly darkened and otherwise quite clean. .

A total of 488 ff. with 382 entries, 54 coloured coats of arms (some raised in gilt), 3 costume illustrations, 2 allegorical illustrations, 1 coloured drawing and 1 lightly coloured pen-and-ink sketch. - I: 219 ff. with 218 entries, including 32 coats of arms (one on the reverse of the loose marbled endpaper), 2 costume illustrations (a fragmented), 1 allegorical illustration and 1 example of musical notes (f. 208). - II: 269 ff. with 164 entries, 22 coats of arms, 1 costume illustration (Livonian peasant couple, f. 220), 1 coloured landscape, 1 allegorical illustration, 1 pen-and-ink drawing, party coloured (2 Chinese costumes, inscribed in Kanji, f. 266). Dos-à-dos binding in full brown calf over wooden boards with owners' initials ("AGKAT" and "IGKLT") within giltstamped borders. Anton Günther Kirchberger (b. 1588, d. after 1652) began this album around the age of 20 (adding a full-page autobiographical introduction in later years). He served as municipal secretary and court clerk in Langensalza (Thuringia) from 1619 to 1632, later entering the services of Duke Wilhelm IV and Duke Ernst I of Saxony-Gotha. The second album, which is bound dos-à-dos with the first, belongs to his son, Johann Günther Kirchberger (1628-1674), consistorial secretary in Gotha. In 1666 he married Elisabetha Sophia Marterseck, née. Glass. As the second album is dated "1650" on the cover, it is likely that Anton Günther Kirchberger was respondible for having this unique double friendship album bound: the leaves of the first album have been slightly trimmed by the binder (with insignifi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Perkins (William)
Printed by Thomas Brooke and Cantrell Legge, 1608. FIRST EDITION, lacking initial leaf (blank except for signature mark), a little damp-staining in the fore-margins, title-page creased (no loss), pp. [vi, of viii], 552, [20], 4to, contemporary calf, single gilt fillets on sides between blind fillets, gilt medallion stamped at the centre of the covers, rounded spine with compartments formed by pairs of gilt lines, upper joint ¾ split, tear in spine, rubbed and a bit worn, par of holes at fore-edges where once were silk ties, annotated throughout in a contemporary hand (see below), 19th-century bookplate of the Hon. & Rev. E. Wingfield, small neat circular blue-printed ticket of the Dublin theological bookseller Bonsall. Throughout the book there are crosses marking passages in the margins, supplemented with notes in what appears to be shorthand. A fly-leaf at the end contains a concordance of these. The fly-leaf at the front has the contemporary purchase note of Richard Lawrence p. 3s 6d. 'As a fellow of Christ's College, where he taught from his election in 1584 until he resigned his fellowship at Michaelmas 1594, Perkins exercised considerable influence . The genius of Perkins's work did not lie in its originality—his theology represents a conventional recital of Calvinist scholasticism in virtually every respect. His gift lay rather in bringing to a broad audience a variety of theological and moral issues, popularizing essentially technical discussions, and therefore, as Fuller observed, humbling "the towering speculations of philosophers into practice and morality" (Full … [Click Below for Full Description]
