Known in English as The exercise of arms, it was written and illustrated by Jacques de Gheyn and quickly became a famous pictorial army manual for use of officers to teach the young recruits how to handle their weapons: the arquebus (part 1), musket (part 2) and pike (part 3). It gives an excellent picture of the successful army of the Dutch Republic after its reform by Prince Maurits, who (re)introduced exercises and discipline. It also immortalizes Prince Maurits as a military thinker and commander of the most disciplined army of his age. The book met immediate success and makes a considerable contribution to our knowledge of military history. Fully coloured copies like the present were produced largely for princes and other important persons and were probably coloured by De Gh … [Click Below for Full Description]

STOW, John
London: by John Windet] for the companie of Stacioners, 1607. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Beginning 1565, English historian John Stow published his landmark work "Summarie of Englyshe Chronicles". In this book, Stow describes the origins of Great Britain, both Scotland and England, and its people - a work that would evolve and included numerous additions through the 17th-century. Stow also provides details on English castles and dungeons, parishes and cathedrals, the feuds between Anglican and Catholic religious bodies, kings, wars, and much, much more. Following Stow's death in the early 1600s, Edmund Howes continued Stow's original work with more editions. This 1607 first edition was the first edition that Howes would publish of Stow's masterpiece; an edition that still utilized the gothic script that was customary of "Stow's Chronicle". Curiously, while this example lacks title page, we are unable to locate any example that does include a title page - all found 1607 first editions lack the title page. [Attributes: First Edition]

Francisco Hernandez Galleguillos claims that after giving the mules (both having a value of 150 pesos), his debt was not reduced and demands the restitution of the mules or a letter of payment. The lawsuit continued with the statement of a public notary, who subpoenaed Antonio Francisco Pantoja that states that he had given a letter of payment (but he says the price each mule was sold for was 65 pesos so a total of 130 pesos) and that was the amount he swears he gave to Diego Hincon Pantoja. BRANDT, Geeraert.
1607. Large paper copy of the first edition, in the original Dutch, of the standard biography of the great Dutch naval hero Admiral Michiel Adriaansz. de Ruyter (1607-1676), who scored several major victories against the French and English, the best known abroad being the Raid on Chatham, one of the worst defeats of the British Royal Navy. For the present work Brandt used numerous original documents from De Ruyter's son and other private individuals, as well as from official government sources. "This resulted in a book that was not only based on good information, but through his exalted, lucid and engaging style also became a true folk-book in the best sense of the word" (NNBW).De Ruyter fought the English off the coast of West Africa, the Caribbean, temporarily took St John's, New Foundland, and even considered retaking New York. While the binding is somewhat scuffed along the spine, the book itself is in very good condition, with only an occasional spot.Alden & Landis 687/21; Cat.
