Rome, 1608. Engraving. 280 x 395mm. A plan of Arcevia in the style of a bird's-eye view, first published in 1594, but this example with the date altered. 1608. Rilegatura antica in piena pergamena. Illustrato con xilografie a pagina intera. Latin Text. Francoforte, 1608; bound, pp. 540, b/w plates, cm 12,5x19. [Click Below for Full Description]

John Gerson / Thomas A Kempis.
Lugduni (Lyon): Apud Horatium Cardon, 1608. Ioannis Gersonis Cancellarii Parisiensis; De Imitatione Christi, Lib IIII John Gerson / Thomas A Kempis. VG+ Vellum Pages370;554;87 Apud Horatium Cardon Lugduni (lyon) 1608 Jean Charlier de Gerson was a French scholar, educator, reformer, and poet, Chancellor of the University of Paris, a guiding light of the conciliar movement and one of the most prominent theologians at the Council of Constance. He was one of the first thinkers to develop what would later come to be called natural rights theory, and was also one of the first individuals to defend Joan of Arc and proclaim her supernatural vocation as authentic. Width: 3.5" Height: 5.25". Bound in half vellum with marbled paper covered boards. The volume is a Latin edition of the title "The Imitation of Christ." Tradition declares that during his sojourn he translated or adapted from the Latin a work upon eternal consolation, which afterwards became very famous under the title of The Imitation of Christ, attributed to Thomas à Kempis. It has, however, been proven that this work really was written by a Kempis and not by John Gerson or the abbot Gerson. Contents lightly but pleasantly aged. Nice decorative border of Title page. 850.00.

On display is a unique example of a 1608 Geneva Bible printed by the deputies of Robert Barker printer to the Kings most excellent majestie. It contains the Old and New Testament as well as the Apocrypha. The cover is a light Brown. Both boards and spine are firmly attatched and the book is tight and put together very well. The truly rare part of this Bible is the age. Printed just 48 years after the very first complete English version of the first Geneva Bible. It is one of only a few extremely rare Bibles printed in the early 1600's to have survived the centuries. It has been professionally rebound insuring that everything is tight and well put together. This is an excellent example of a 1608 Bible and of course with virtually anything of this age it is incomplete. While not having checked every page, the Old Testament appears to be mostly complete including the main Title Page which is shown above. It is missing the following. The Apocrypha ends at second Macabees chapter 15. The following section of the New Testament is missing the Title page and a portion of Mathew which starts in Chapter 17 and continues to 1st John with the rest through Revelations missing. That is followed by a first and second Table which is entitled a brief Table of the interpretation of the proper names. This starts with the letter B and continues through to the Second Table ending With W H. While it is incomplete, it is extraordinarily rare to find a Bible in the early 1600's in any condition much less completely rebound. Pictures above show this. Another unusually rare part to this Bible is the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Beautiful shape for its age!! 1608 Holy Bible Translated according to the Ebrew and Greeke, and conferred with the best translations in divers languages. Printed in London by Robert Barker, Printer to the Kings most Excellent Majistie, 1608. Full Leather Title continues, "to the reader; and also a most profitable concordance for the ready finding out of anything in the same contained." This 410 year old bible is known as the "Geneva" version or "Breeches Bible." The Geneva Bible is one of the most historically significant translations of the Bible into the English language, preceding the King James version in 1611 by 51 years. The Geneva Bible was the Bible of choice for over 100 years of English speaking Christians. In fact, it remained more popular than the King James version until decades after its original release in 1611. Beautifully rebound in warm leather with a sturdy spine allowing one to read without fear of turning pages. Another unique aspect of the Bible is the Blackletter typeset, as well, as the Robert Barker colophon that is visible on the last printed page. Old trimming affecting some headings but not the text with old gilding to the edges. Repaired edges to title and several following leaves with some edge loss. Scattered browning/foxing as expected. The text is quite readable. Some pages with interesting notes in a contemporary ink script. This bible contains the Title pages stating the 1608 print date and Robert Barker as printer … [Click Below for Full Description]
