Giovanni Antonio MAGINI (1555 - 1617)
L. Dufour - A. La Gumina, "Imago Siciliae", p. 108; Sicilia 1477-1861 - La collezione Spagnolo- Patermo, n. 82

John Gerson / Thomas A Kempis.
Lugduni (Lyon): Ioannis Gersonis Cancellarii Parisiensis; De Imitatione Christi, Lib IIII John Gerson / Thomas A Kempis. VG+ Vellum Pages370;554;87 Apud Horatium Cardon Lugduni (lyon) 1608 Jean Charlier de Gerson was a French scholar, educator, reformer, and poet, Chancellor of the University of Paris, a guiding light of the conciliar movement and one of the most prominent theologians at the Council of Constance. He was one of the first thinkers to develop what would later come to be called natural rights theory, and was also one of the first individuals to defend Joan of Arc and proclaim her supernatural vocation as authentic. Width: 3.5" Height: 5.25". Bound in half vellum with marbled paper covered boards. The volume is a Latin edition of the title "The Imitation of Christ." Tradition declares that during his sojourn he translated or adapted from the Latin a work upon eternal consolation, which afterwards became very famous under the title of The Imitation of Christ, attributed to Thomas à Kempis. It has, however, been proven that this work really was written by a Kempis and not by John Gerson or the abbot Gerson. Contents lightly but pleasantly aged. Nice decorative border of Title page. 850.00.

GIRALDI CINTHIO, Giov. Battista.
Parte prima (e seconda). Venetia, E. Deuchino e G.B. Pulciani, 1608. 2 parti in un vol. in-4, pp. (12), 494, (2 bianche); (8), 458 (manca un f. bianco in fine); legatura coeva piena pergamena rigida, nome dell'a. ms. al dorso, tagli marmorizz. Impresa tipografica su entrambi i frontespizi, iniziali silogr., car. corsivo. Dedica dello stampatore Pulciani a Giov. Giacomo Giuliani. Bullough, Narrative and dramatic sources of Shakespeare), mentre un'altra è legata alla "Notte dell'Epifania". Engraved frontispiece (not cited by bibliographies). Woodcut initials, typographical head, and tailpieces. Woodcut printer's device on last leaf. Pages framed by double-line. Housed in a custom-made folder, covered with marbled paper. (1 [leaf of engraved frontispiece]), (8), 242, (22) p.; Signatures: A-Q8, 8 ( 8 verso blank). Scarce first edition of this pioneering Portuguese economical work with references to Brazil. Mendes de Vasconcelos' Dialogo is considered as the first important monument of Portuguese economic thought and the earliest example of the awareness of the importance of the creative capacity of the economy. (Sérgio, 1924) Written in form of a dialogue between a Philosopher, a Soldier, and a Politician, it deals with the political and economic problems rooted in Portugal's colonial endeavor and achievements. Mendes de Vasconcelos "observed that the conquest of India had brought Portugal neither new fields to cultivate nor new pastures in which to raise cattle. Moreover, the Indian enterprise constantly lured people from the countryside to the city, further swelling the burgeoning population of Lisbon. From there many embarked to seek their fortunes in the Far East. Meanwhile, the exploding growth of the capital city was not counterbalanced by any increase in food production. In Mendes de Vasconcelos's mind Portugal was paying a high price for imperial glory, for its agricultural sector was increasingly unable to … [Click Below for Full Description]

ANONIMO,
APRESSO ALESSANDRO VECCHI,, VENETIA, 1608. [Click Below for Full Description]
