Menacho, Juan Perez de
Lima: 1608-09. Manuscript in ink. 147 leaves. 4to. A rare survival: a manuscript commentary on Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologiae by an eminent Peruvian Jesuit. The work forms a discussion of the First Part of the Second Part, Questions 1-5 - namely, "De ultimo fine hominis" which focuses on the question of human happiness ("beatitude") Clearly a working manuscript, evident in the various crossings out and revisions, the different dates on the title page and colophon indicate the text was completed overs several months, finally being completed on February 14, 1609. The number 6 written on the upper cover indicated this could be the final volume of the six volume commentary on Aquinas's work Menacho published. Having studied at the university of Lima, Menacho entered the Jesuit order in 1583. He taught at the college of San Pablo and was appointed to the chair of theology at the university of San Marcos in 1601. The author was a casualty of the now famous earthquake that destroyed Lima on 19 October 1609 (eight month after completing this ms.). He was left paralyzed for the remaining 16 years of his life, though continued to write and teach until his death. He is the author of 13 other works including Privilegios de los indios, Theologiae moralis tractatus; Redditibus eccleciasticae, and Privilegios de la Compañia de Jesus. Provenance: Libreria de S[a]n. Pablo de la Compa[ñia]. De Jesus de Lima (note at foot of title leaf); Blue Cloud Abbey, South Dakota (bookseller's pencil annotation to first blank). GHEYN, Jacob de / BREEN
Amsterdam, Robert de Baudous, Henri Laurent, 1608. ______ Format : In-folio. Collation : titre, (20) pp, titre, 34, 16, 42, 43, 33 planches. *-------* First editions of these two works. They are illlustrated by 2 title-frontispices and 168 copp … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOTERO, Giovanni
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Giovanni Botero was a 16th-century Italian scholar who wrote on politics, theology, and philosophy, making commentaries on great thinkers such as Machiavelli, Locke, and Adam Smith. His works, while not substantially influential during his lifetime, were important to the development of political and economic thinkers in the early 17th-centuries, especially to Belgian scholar Justus Lipsius. In 1608, Botero published 'Memorable Illustrious Persons', a collection of curious anecdotes and narratives of important writers, historians, theologians, economists, and more. With a clear and extensive list of contents, notable names include Saint Ambrose, Charles Borromeo, Philip II of Spain, Virgin Mary, Jesus and the Apostles, Thomas More, Saint Thomas Aquinas, numerous popes, and many, many more. In addition to 'Memorabili' this work is bound with Botero poetry entitled 'La Primavera'. [Attributes: First Edition]

Aristophanes
Paris: David Douceur. Scuffs and Tears to the Boards (please see Photos): Nominal Foxing: Writing. Folio edition of Aristophanes comedies in both Greek and Latin. Engraved bust of Aristophanes on title page and nice engraved decorations interspersed throughout. Some marginalia and underlining. A very big book well worth rehabbing as it has a great gilt embossed motif on the front and back, gilt lettering up the spine; marbled edges and leather boards. The boards are scuffed and have raised tears, the front board is mostly separated, literally hanging on by a thread but not an untoward amount of foxing for the age. Leather is surprisingly soft for the age of the volume. With scholarly notes by Odoardi Bizeti and others. Do not hesitate to email with questions or for more pictures. Acceptable: Folio (13 1/4" X 8 1/2" X2 1/2"): leather boards with scuffing, and tears: gilt embossed lyre on front and back: spine cracked and chipped: front board off and hanging by a thread: marbled edges faded: minor foxing throughout: underlining and some marginalia but not a lot: name of previous owner(s) written in ink at top of spare page and title page: "Aristophanes Comediae Undecim": Aristophanes:Venunndantur Lutetiae apud Davidem Douceur:1608. It contains the Old and New Testament as well as the Apocrypha. The cover is a light Brown. Both boards and spine are firmly attatched and the book is tight and put together very well. The truly rare part of this Bible is the age. Printed just 48 years after the very first complete English version of the first Geneva Bible. It is one of only a few extremely rare Bibles printed in the early 1600's to have survived the centuries. It has been professionally rebound insuring that everything is tight and well put together. This is an excellent example of a 1608 Bible and of course with virtually anything of this age it is incomplete. While not having checked every page, the Old Testament appears to be mostly complete including the main Title Page which is shown above. It is missing the following. The Apocrypha ends at second Macabees chapter 15. The following section of the New Testament is missing the Title page and a portion of Mathew which starts in Chapter 17 and continues to 1st John with the rest through Revelations missing. That is followed by a first and second Table which is entitled a brief Table of the interpretation of the proper names. This starts with the letter B and continues through to the Second Table ending With W H. While it is incomplete, it is extraordinarily rare to find a Bible in the early 1600's in any condition much less completely rebound. Pictures above show this. VIRTUALLY NONEXISTENT AND HIGHLY DESIRABLE OFFICIAL WAX SEAL OF JOHN MILTON, THE WELL-KNOWN ENGLISH POET WHO AUTHORED PARADISE LOST Official wax seal of John Milton clipped from a document. The wax seal has been attached to a card identifying it as being the seal of Milton, nearly complete and intact with only the right side having been cracked, measures 4.75" by 3.75", and in fine condition with age toning. Newe Zeitung - Thailand].
No place, [1608]. Folio (210 x 335 mm). 1 p. Dutch manuscript (a regular cursive hand in brown ink) on paper, watermark "STRVB" (probably the papermill founded by the printer Leonhard Straub in Aach near Rorschach in 1582). Written space ca. 180 x 240 mm. An important and early document relating to the history of the Dutch East India Company: the Dutch translation of a letter of King Ekathotsarot of Siam to Maurice of Nassau, Prince of Orange. The original letter was presented to Maurice by a Siamese embassy that reached the Hague in 1608. - The first Dutch merchants had visited Siam in the early 17th century; in 1608 King Ekathotsarot (Sanphet III) was the first ruler of Thailand to send an embassy to Europe. In September the mission reached the court of Maurice of Orange in the Hague. Maurice, stadtholder (steward) of the Dutch Republic, here addressed as "Connick van Hollant" (or King of Holland), was presented with various gifts as well as with King Ekathotsarot's letter, of which a translation is here provided. "It proved the beginning of a relationship with the Dutch East India Company that was to last for more than 160 years. It was not long before new European inventions such as telescopes and binoculars reached Siam" (cf. Gerroldt, Politik und Monarchie in Thailand II, 67). The news of the Thai embassy created a sensation throughout northern Europe, of which the present handwritten newspaper gives rare evidence. - Very minor spotting, a few minor cracks at the folds, but finely preserved.

This 410 year old bible is known as the "Geneva" version or "Breeches Bible." The Geneva Bible is one of the most historically significant translations of the Bible into the English language, preceding the King James version in 1611 by 51 years. In fact, it remained more popular than the King James version until decades after its original release in 1611. Beautifully rebound in warm leather with a sturdy spine allowing one to read without fear of turning pages. Notes Blaeu's landmark map of Africa, which was "of such importance that for the next 100 years numerous mapmakers throughout Europe... copied [it] in both design and content" (Betz). The map of Africa depicts the European conception of the continent at the dawn of the seventeenth century, an especially interesting juncture when the coastlines were well-explored, but its heart remained an enigma. Blaeu was influenced by Giacomo Gastaldis large map of 1564, which was copied in Antwerp by Cornelis De Jode, as well as Abraham Orteliuss maps of 1595. He also considered the maps present in Filippo Pigafettas book on the Congo, based on the explorations of Duarte Lopes (1591) and the map included in the second edition of Giovanni Battista Ramusios 'Navigatione et Viaggi' (1550), in addition to Portuguese sources included in Jan Huygens van Linschotens 'Itinerario' (1596).In west Africa, Blaeu depicted territorial divisions similar to Gastaldi and Ortelius, labelling both Barbaria and Libya Interior. The Niger and Senegal Rivers combine to flow into the Atlantic as one great system, with an apocryphal Lake Niger being the source for the latter. The great entrepot of Tombotu (Timbukto) is shown and the Gold Coast is based on a map by Luis de Texiera, which found its way to … [Click Below for Full Description]

STEVIN, Simon.
Leyden: Jan Paedts Jacobsz, 1608-05-05-08. First edition. Very rare first edition in French of this collection of works, which was published almost simultaneously in Dutch, French and Latin. They deal, among other topics, with geometry, trigonometry, perspective, and double-entry book-keeping - Stevin was one of the first authors to compose a treatise on governmental accounting. The Appendice Algébraique, which Sarton called 'one of Stevin's most important publications,' is the first published general method of solving algebraic equations; it uses what is now called the 'intermediate value theorem,' a remarkable anticipation, as it was not rigorously formulated by mathematicians until the nineteenth century. All the works appearing in this volume were first published in this collection (with one exception, where the version here is the earliest extant - see below). Stevin (1548-1620) was perhaps the most original scientist of the second half of the 16th century (the major works of Galileo did not appear until the 17th century). "He was involved in geometry, algebra, arithmetic (pioneering a system of decimals), dynamics and statics, almost all branches of engineering and the theory of music" (Kemp, p. 113). "Stevin unconditionally supported [the Copernican system], several years before Galileo and at a time when few other scientists could bring themselves to do likewise" (DSB XIII: 48). In 1593 Prince Maurice of Nassau (1567-1625) appointed Stevin quartermaster-general of the Dutch armies, a post he held until his death. From 1600 Stevin organized the mathematical teaching … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giovanni Antonio MAGINI (1555 - 1617)
L. Dufour - A. La Gumina, "Imago Siciliae", p. 108; Sicilia 1477-1861 - La collezione Spagnolo- Patermo, n. 82

On display is a unique example of a 1608 Geneva Bible printed by the deputies of Robert Barker printer to the Kings most excellent majestie. Another unusually rare part to this Bible is the … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Gerson / Thomas A Kempis.
Lugduni (Lyon): Ioannis Gersonis Cancellarii Parisiensis; De Imitatione Christi, Lib IIII John Gerson / Thomas A Kempis. VG+ Vellum Pages370;554;87 Apud Horatium Cardon Lugduni (lyon) 1608 Jean Charlier de Gerson was a French scholar, educator, reformer, and poet, Chancellor of the University of Paris, a guiding light of the conciliar movement and one of the most prominent theologians at the Council of Constance. He was one of the first thinkers to develop what would later come to be called natural rights theory, and was also one of the first individuals to defend Joan of Arc and proclaim her supernatural vocation as authentic. Width: 3.5" Height: 5.25". Bound in half vellum with marbled paper covered boards. The volume is a Latin edition of the title "The Imitation of Christ." Tradition declares that during his sojourn he translated or adapted from the Latin a work upon eternal consolation, which afterwards became very famous under the title of The Imitation of Christ, attributed to Thomas à Kempis. It has, however, been proven that this work really was written by a Kempis and not by John Gerson or the abbot Gerson. Contents lightly but pleasantly aged. Nice decorative border of Title page. 850.00.
