Johannes Baptiste VRIENTS (1552 - 1612)
Molto rara. Bibliografia: Van den Broecke 135, Mangani/Mariano, Il disegno del territorio, pp.124/5, 6. Dimensioni 485x380. Geographic map, from Ortelius'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, Latin edition printed in 1608. Though the plate bears the date of 1606, the map has been published only from 1608 on. Due to the close resemblance, very likely Vrients drove his inspiration from Magini's work, though he did not mention him as the author. Copper engraving, contemporary colour, small lower margins, in excellent condition. Very rare. Bibliografia: Van den Broecke 135, Mangani/Mariano, Il disegno del territorio, pp.124/5, 6. Johannes Baptiste VRIENTS (1552 - 1612)
In alto a destra piccola carta denominata "Rhodiginae peninsulae descriptio".
Etching, signed at the lower left. From the Capricci e Habiti Militari series. Giovanni Antonio MAGINI (1555 - 1617)
Map taken from "L'Italia" by Fabio Magini, published in Bologna between 1620 and 1640. L. Dufour - A. ORTELIUS, Abraham.
Amsterdam: J.B. Virents, 1608, first Italian edition. Fine original colour. 385 x 480mm. Minor repairs at centrefold. Inspired from Christopher Saxton's map of 1579, first introduced into the 'Theatrum' only in 1602. Although a great improvement on the map after Humfrey Lhuyd, Ortelius stuck with Lhuyd's map probably out of respect for his deceased friend. This version was introduced into the 'Theatrum' as soon as Vrients took over publication, but the Lhuyd map was still being used in 1606, when the Virents map of England & Ireland first appeared. A naval battle is taking place off the Cornish coast. Van den Broecke gives his estimate of examples printed as '525?' in total and '50?' for this Italian edition. GOGLER, Carl von.
Four rare German works on pharmacology, mineral springs and "sympathetic" healing powder, published as three editions.Ad 1: Very rare second edition, extensively revised, of a practical "home and field apothecary". Goglers book is arranged in nine chapters, each devoted to a different subject, plus an appendix on bloodletting. The subjects include various parts of the body (1-4, 8), women and children (5), kinds of ailments (6-7) and kinds of medicine (9). Ad 2: Fifth edition in German of Digby's famous oration on "the powder of sympathy. His mysterious powder (composed primarily of copper sulfate) was supposed to cure a wound "sympathetically," even from a great distance, when rubbed on the (bloody) weapon that inflicted it, a notion proposed by Rudolf Goclenius in 1608. It is accompanied by a German translation of the 1642 Latin treatise on the same subject by Petrus Servius of Spoleto (d. 1648), with a recipe for making the powder on the last four pages. Ad 3: Second edition of Jacob Theodorus Tabernæmontanuss (1520-1590) account of naturally carbonated mineral springs. He covers all such springs known to him in the German states, in particular that at Bad Schwalbach near Wiesbaden, which he describes in great detail. He discusses the powers of these springs to cure illnesses. With a bookplate on pastedown and a 17th-century owner's inscription on the title-page of ad 3. LOPEZ, Gregorio.
Rare first Italian edition of the annual report and letter on the events that had taken place in the Philippines during the year 1608, especially regarding the Jesuit mission there. It is one of the earliest works published in the West solely devoted to the Philippines. The letter (pp. 3-124) reflects on the dramatic strides made by the Jesuits in the first decade of the 17th century and the corresponding increase in European interest in the region. The letter treats the difficulties with the Muslims in the "Pintados" (the Bisayan islands) and in Mindanao, the Dutch invasion of the region, the crocodile plague in Taitai, Indians in Santiago, the island Bohol, the mission in Ottona and other matters.Lach lists the present work among the earliest separately published Jesuit letters entirely devoted to the Philippines, characterizing them all as "exceedingly rare". Gregorio Lopez the elder (1561-1614) arrived in Manila in 1601 and made Philippine history by serving as the region's first Provincial, the highest-ranking administrative post, holding this office from 1605 until 1612. He was instrumental in suppressing the Chinese rebellion of 1603 and in dramatically increasing the educational activities of the Colleges of Manila and Cebù.With the title-page detached and re-attached and occasional minor foxing but book and binding otherwise in very good condition.De Backer & Sommervogel IV, col. 1948; ICCU, UM1E 004899 (8 copies); Lach & Van Kley, pp. 372-373; Palau 140000.

[USSELINCX, Willem?].
First(?) edition (one of two dated 1608) of a polemical discourse in Dutch strongly advocating freedom of trade for the Dutch East India Company, sometimes attributed to Willem Usselincx (1567-1647). After 1600 the Dutch met growing successes in their war of independence from Spain, and in 1605 they captured large parts of the East Indies that had belonged to the united Spanish and Portuguese crown. This forced the Spanish to agree to a cease-fire in 1607. Negotiations began, but the Dutch merchants vehemently opposed any concessions to Spain. This set off a pamphlet war, especially on the subject of free trade in the East and West Indies. The present discourse discusses the Dutch trade in both the East and the West Indies and the trade routes to the East, both around the Cape of Good Hope and via the Strait of Magellan, including a brief description of all territories from the Cape via Ceylon to the East Indies and Philippines. It also emphasises the great commercial profits of the trade and gives some information on the early Dutch voyages to the East Indies.Slightly browned, and with a water stain at the head, slightly affecting the first two or three lines of text on most pages, but still in good condition. Lacking the final blank leaf. The binding is very good. An influential, radical anti-Spanish pamphlet on the rights of the VOC, banned by the Dutch government only months after its publication.JCB II, p. 56; Knuttel 1428; Landwehr, VOC 47; Sabin 98192; cf. Porta Giovanni Battista della
Apud Nicolaum Hoffmanum, 1608. Latin text. Small square octavo 190mm x 120mm pp 16 539 very heavily age-toned with some staining engraved vignette title 31 woodcut illustrations bound in a later full vellum slightly worn and marked marbled endpapers leather title label on spine. Originally in the library of a Franciscan monastery with a semi legible provenance at the base of the spine and an ink signature on either side of the vignette the ink from the signature has corroded the paper over 400 years with the result being a small hole. The author and brief title is also written on the bottom edge. A later owner was the French mathematician Eugene Prouhet with his stamp on the first blank leaf. A devotee of the doctrine of signatures Porta pushed this theory to great lengths. 34The illustrations are helpful in interpreting his point of view. The part of a mans body which is healed by a particular herb or the animal whose bites or stings can be cured by it are represented in the same woodcut as the herb. The back view of a human head with a thick crop of hair is introduced into the block with the Maidenhair Fern which is an ancient specific for baldness a Pomegranate with its seeds exposed and a plant of Toothwort with its hard white scale-leaves are represented in the same figure as a set of human teeth.34 ARBER - Herbals.

SANPHET III, King of Ayutthaya (Siam/Thailand).
For the 1608 embassy: J. Anderson, English intercourse with Siam in the seventeenth century (1890), p. 38; J.J.L. Duyvendak, “The first Siamese embassy to Holland”, in: T'oung Pao XXXII (1936), pp. 285-292; Lach & Van Kley III, pp. 47, 394; H. Zoomers & H. Zuidervaart, Embassies of the King of Siam sent to his excellency Prince Marrits, ... (2008). A contemporary Dutch manuscript translation of a letter written late in 1607 by King Sanphet III of Ayutthaya (then generally called Siam in the West and more or less the present-day Thailand), sent with the first Siamese embassy to the Netherlands and addressed to the Dutch stadtholder Maurits of Nassau, Prince of Orange, who received it in September 1608. We have found no printed version of the present text, it supplies details that we have not found in any other source and the original Thai version appears not to survive, giving the present document the greatest importance for understanding the earliest diplomatic relations between Siam and the Dutch Republic and throwing light on activities of the VOC (Dutch East India Company) in its earliest years. Sanphet's letter proposes a friendship and alliance between the two nations, requests various goods and military aid against the Portuguese The principal goal of the VOC, established in 1602, was to advance Dutch trade with Asia, especially the East Indies and China, where the Portuguese were then the greatest European power. In 1604, a VOC representative in Siam learned that the King of Siam sent an annual embassy to China and he hoped that a Dutch representative could accompany … [Click Below for Full Description]

MURTOLA Gasparo.
Appresso Evangelista Deuchino et Gio. Batt. Pulciani, In Venetia, 1608. Prima edizione. Cm.13,x7,2. Pg.(14), 532. Legatura coeva in piena pergamena rigida, con dorso a tre nervature. Tagli bruniti. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

London: Robert Barker, 1608. Virtually Complete. First page of Book of Common Prayer and Table at end of Psalter missing, as is common in a volume read multiple times daily. Piece of upper right corner of New Testament title missing. Apparent water stains on 14 leaves of the Book of Common Prayer. Six headlines and perhaps a few letters from marginal comments on one leaf have been partially trimmed, perhaps because of inaccuracy in the original folding of gathering Uuu. I've found only one or two additional close trimmings to headlines in the Old Testament. 1608 Geneva "Breeches" Bible. Black Letter. Book of Common Prayer with Psalms, Old Testament, Apocrypha, New Testament, Two Concordances, Psalter Very Good Condition. Complete except as noted above. Skillfully rebound (1950's or earlier) in blind-tooled leather. Unlike many rebound 17th-Century Bibles available today, this volume is not "made-up"of fragments of different dates, salvaged from several dismantled Bibles. All parts of this Bible were printed and dated 1608. It has been intact as assembled and originally bound since 1608.
