Small square octavo 190mm x 120mm pp 16 539 very heavily age-toned with some staining engraved vignette title 31 woodcut illustrations bound in a later full vellum slightly worn and marked marbled endpapers leather title label on spine. Originally in the library of a Franciscan monastery with a semi legible provenance at the base of the spine and an ink signature on either side of the vignette the ink from the signature has corroded the paper over 400 years with the result being a small hole. A devotee of the doctrine of signatures Porta pushed this theory to great lengths. 34The illustrations are helpful in interpreting his point of view. SANPHET III, King of Ayutthaya (Siam/Thailand).
For the 1608 embassy: J. Anderson, English intercourse with Siam in the seventeenth century (1890), p. 38; J.J.L. Duyvendak, “The first Siamese embassy to Holland”, in: T'oung Pao XXXII (1936), pp. 285-292; Lach & Van Kley III, pp. 47, 394; H. Zoomers & H. Zuidervaart, Embassies of the King of Siam sent to his excellency Prince Marrits, ... (2008). A contemporary Dutch manuscript translation of a letter written late in 1607 by King Sanphet III of Ayutthaya (then generally called Siam in the West and more or less the present-day Thailand), sent with the first Siamese embassy to the Netherlands and addressed to the Dutch stadtholder Maurits of Nassau, Prince of Orange, who received it in September 1608. We have found no printed version of the present text, it supplies details that we have not found in any other source and the original Thai version appears not to survive, giving the present document the greatest importance for understanding the earliest diplomatic relations between Siam and the Dutch Republic and throwing light on activities of the VOC (Dutch East India Company) in its earliest years. Sanphet's letter proposes a friendship and alliance between the two nations, requests various goods and military aid against the Portuguese The principal goal of the VOC, established in 1602, was to advance Dutch trade with Asia, especially the East Indies and China, where the Portuguese were then the greatest European power. In 1604, a VOC representative in Siam learned that the King of Siam sent an annual embassy to China and he hoped that a Dutch representative could accompany … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

MURTOLA Gasparo.
Appresso Evangelista Deuchino et Gio. Batt. Pulciani, In Venetia, 1608. Prima edizione. Cm.13,x7,2. Pg.(14), 532. Legatura coeva in piena pergamena rigida, con dorso a tre nervature. Tagli bruniti. [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Robert Barker, 1608. Virtually Complete. First page of Book of Common Prayer and Table at end of Psalter missing, as is common in a volume read multiple times daily. Piece of upper right corner of New Testament title missing. Apparent water stains on 14 leaves of the Book of Common Prayer. Six headlines and perhaps a few letters from marginal comments on one leaf have been partially trimmed, perhaps because of inaccuracy in the original folding of gathering Uuu. I've found only one or two additional close trimmings to headlines in the Old Testament. 1608 Geneva "Breeches" Bible. Black Letter. Book of Common Prayer with Psalms, Old Testament, Apocrypha, New Testament, Two Concordances, Psalter Very Good Condition. Complete except as noted above. Skillfully rebound (1950's or earlier) in blind-tooled leather. Unlike many rebound 17th-Century Bibles available today, this volume is not "made-up"of fragments of different dates, salvaged from several dismantled Bibles. All parts of this Bible were printed and dated 1608. It has been intact as assembled and originally bound since 1608.

[Leiden] ex Officina Plantiniana Raphelengii , 1608. Hardcover. Good. [Iconography] Bound in contemporary calf. Rebacked by Bernard Middleton (of London) in 1986. Good binding and cover. 211 woodcuts of allegorical emblems, each accompanied by a poem by Andrea Alciati and a separate commentary by Claude Mignault. The devices used were probably first cut for the Plantinian edition of 1584, and served for succeeding editions. Several bear the monogram "A." Engraved portrait of Alciati. 218, 698 pages + [14] index. Slight toning. Top margin shaved close at some points. A few page have corner rips.
Andrea Alciato was a 16th-century Italian lawyer and humanist. His work, Emblemata was first printed in Augsburg in 1531 and was extremely popular, reprinted in 150 editions. An interesting note for legal iconography: page 151 has an emblem of "The good Prince in his Council." The prince is wearing a cloth obscuring part or all of his eyes. This is an early depiction of blind justice.
Provenance: Book plate from the Oxford art historian, John Bernard Bury (1917-2017). Additional book plate of Michael Bury.

Etching, signed at the lower left. From the Capricci e Habiti Militari series. Herbornæ Nassov: [Christopher Corvinus],, 1608. 2 parts in 1 volume as issued, duodecimo (119 x 73 mm). 20th-century brown morocco, spine lettered in gilt. Woodcut printed music to text. 20th-century inked ownership signature to front free endpaper, cropped 19th-century ownership signature to title page, early annotations to second part and manuscript pagination to preliminaries. Closely bound with some loss of text into inner margin, short closed tear to L3. A very good copy. First Corvinus edition of Buchanan's metrical Latin version of the Psalms. The humanist scholar George Buchanan (1506-1582) translated the psalms into Latin verse while imprisoned for heresy in Portugal. "The best-known work associated with his period of detention was his Latin version of the Psalms which he may have planned earlier as it was a genre which attracted contemporary French writers. Dedicated to Mary, queen of Scots, when published, it is the work which does most to justify Henri Estienne's description of Buchanan as easily the leading poet of his time. His principal characteristics as a poet may be described as mastery of the Latin language and variety of subject matter" (ODNB). The first complete printing of the translation was in 1565-6.

Giovanni Antonio MAGINI (1555 - 1617)
Map taken from "L'Italia" by Fabio Magini, published in Bologna between 1620 and 1640. L. Dufour - A. Holy Bible
[Antwerp], Raphelengii: officina Plantiniana, 1608. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. An incredibly rare, valuable, and desirable early 17th-century printing of the Psalms of David in Hebrew. Printed in Leiden by the Plantin Press, this Hebrew and Latin interlinear edition comes from the famed Latin editions of Saint Pagninus and Benito Arias Montano. Montano was best known for his Polyglot Bible in which he was accused by the Spanish Inquisition of altering the scriptural text from the original Hebrew. Montano sought to prove his innocence by making interlinear editions of the Bible. Like other Montano Bibles, this edition features a 'word-for-word' (interlinear) translation in which the two languages appear on top of each other. [Attributes: First Edition]
