MAGNA CARTA
1608. (MAGNA CARTA). Magna Charta cum statutis, tum antiquis, tum recentibus. London: Companie of Stationers, 1608. Thick 12mo, period-style full red morocco with elaborately gilt decorated spine and boards, black morocco spine label, marbled endpapers; ll. [6], 258. $3200.Rare early 17th-century printing of the Magna Carta in Latin, “one of the central documents in the history of Western civilization,… the symbol of political liberty… [and] the foundation of modern constitutional government” (Viorst). With later statutes and supporting material in Law French and English. The Magna Carta, the Great Charter of English liberties granted by King John in 1215 under threat of civil war, is one of the most influential documents ever published, and its significance has grown immeasurably with the passage of time. It holds ""a unique place in popular imagination; quite early in its history it became a symbol and a battle cry against oppression, each successive generation reading into it a protection of their own threatened liberties. In England the Petition of Right (1628) and the Habeas Corpus Act (1679) looked directly back to the famous… charter… In the United States both the national and the state constitutions show ideas and even phrases directly traceable to Magna Carta"" (New Britannica). The Great Charter is ""the most important legislative enactment of this epoch… Its historical importance consists in the fact that it opened a new chapter in English history, which ended by establishing a system of constitutional government, of which the Charter … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Robert Barker, 1608. rebound to style, full brown leather with fillet inlay on covers, spine with raised bands, two burgundy morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, gilt in compartments, all edges gilt. Spine faded to very light brown, margins of leaves a little trimmed not affecting text or illustrations. Quarto. "The Book of Common Prayer" was printed by Thomas and John Buck, printers to the Universitie of Cambridge [England], 1630. First printed in 1560, the "Geneva" version is so called because it was translated by W. Whittingham, Anthony Gilby, Thomas Sampson, and perhaps others, at Geneva. This Bible showed a distinct advance on its predecessors, and appearing as it did in more compact form, with roman type, and verse divisions, obtained speedy and permanent popularity. Between 1560 and 1644 at least one hundred and forty editions appeared of the Geneva Bible or Testament. Examination of King James's Bible of 1611 shows that its translators in correcting the Bishop's Bible were influenced more by the Geneva than any other English version. The Geneva Bible is one of the most historically significant translations of the Bible into English, preceding the King James translation by 51 years. It was the primary Bible of 16th century Protestantism and was the Bible used by William Shakespeare, Oliver Cromwell, John Knox, John Donne, and John Bunyan, author of Pilgrim’s Progress. It was one of the Bibles taken to America on the Mayflower. SUAREZ DE ARGUELLO (Francisco).
- in-folio. 4ff. 355pp. (i.e. 349). "These carefully calculated ephemerides for 1607-18 are probably the first in any language to mention specific areas of the New World which are to be darkened by eclipses of the sun or moon. It is of great rarity, being unknown to Thorndike and most other historians and bibliographers of astronomy as well as of Americana. Among the eclipses forecast for the Western Hemisphere are one of the moon, 22 November 1612, shadowing the Magellan Straits, Tierra del Fuego, and neighboring regions; of the sun, 13 October 1613, shadowing … [Click Below for Full Description]

***** First editions of these two works. They are illlustrated by 2 title-frontispices and 168 copper engravings plates. " - Yve-Plessis n°391.

POST, Pieter.
Splendid collected works of the most famous Dutch architect and master builder of the 17th century, Pieter Post (1608-1669), including the enormous folding portrait of his patron Johan Maurits, governor of Brazil, not included in all copies. Each of the first 7 parts is devoted to a single building by Pieter Post, and they are high points in the history of Dutch architecture. Among them are the house of Johan Maurits in The Hague (now the Mauritshuis Museum); the house and gardens of Amalia van Solms (now the palace Huis ten Bosch); the Maastricht city hall and the weigh house in Gouda. With small tears in the portrait where the folds cross, one plate slightly slurred by the printer and some leaves restored, but still in good condition. 2 plates of the 2nd series are mistakenly bound with the 8th series. The binding has a tear in the spine and various smaller tears, scrapes and scratches, the foot of the spine and a few smaller parts have been restored. Splendid collected works of the most famous Dutch architect and master builder of the 17th century.

[Usselincx, William]
[Amsterdam, 1608. [20]pp. Small quarto. Early 20th-century speckled calf by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, neatly rebacked in matching style, gilt, leather label. Internally clean. Very good. This rare pamphlet is the foundation document of the Dutch West India Company and all Dutch involvement in the New World. The author, William Usselincx, was an inveterate foe of the Spanish and the champion of Dutch expansionism. Herein he argues for the creation of a Dutch West India company and emphasizes the necessity of preserving Dutch free trade with the West Indies. Such trade would not only curb Spanish power, he notes, but also enrich the Dutch empire. He writes that the wealth to be gained from the West Indies is not to be found in gold and silver, but in the natural products of the region, reaped with the benefit of slave labor (though he does cogently note the economic disadvantages of slavery). This work and other writings of Usselincx led directly to the creation of the Company in 1621 and the settlement of the Dutch in New York and Brazil. There are two issues of this pamphlet, both dated 1608, the present copy being the issue which originally appeared as part of Usselincx's collection of anti- Spanish pamphlets, the "Bye-corf" or "Bee-hive." EUROPEAN AMERICANA locates ten copies of the "Bye-corf" issue. "One of the best Dutch economic pamphlets of the seventeenth century" - Jameson. A book of great importance to the history of New York and the Dutch in the New World. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 608/178. JAMESON, USSELINCX 6. ASHER 33. CHURCH 334. SABIN 98212. KRESS 298. BELL U72. London 1608, 1609, 1610: Robert Barker. Full-Leather. Very Good. Small quarto (8 1/2" x 6 1/2") bound in contemporary suede covered boards; the "Breeches" Bible, so called from the passage in Genesis 3:7, "the sewed figge tree leaves together and made themselves breeches." Bound together with The Book of Common Prayer (lacking title page), The Apocrypha, The New Testament, title page dated 1610, the Concordance, dated 1608 and the Psalms, dated 1609 (final leaf lacking). Printed just a few years before the King James Version, the present Bible comes near the end of the Geneva printings; printed in double column format. A few shoulder-notes shaved closely, owner notes on a few blank areas and a few corners lost, not affecting text. Expertly re-backed to style, in matching suede; newer end papers. Overall, a very good, handsome copy of an historically important Bible.

LÜNEBURG / FÜRSTENTUM. Mellinger, Johann:
Köln, 1608. Grenzkolorierte Kupferstichkarte, Joh. Bussemecher exc. 28 x 21 cm. Sehr gut erhalten. * Meurer, Atl. Colon. Qua 7,34.
