Aristophanes c. 446 ? c. 386 BC, known as the Father of Comedy, was a comic playwright of ancient Athens. Eleven of his forty plays survive virtually complete. These, together with fragments of some of his other plays, provide the only real examples of a genre of comic drama known as Old Comedy, and are used to define it. Aristophanes has been said to recreate the life of ancient Athens more convincingly than any other author. His powers of ridicule were feared and acknowledged by influential contemporaries; Plato singled out Aristophanes' play The Clouds as slander that contributed to the trial and subsequent condemning to death of Socrates although other satirical playwrights had also caricatured the philosopher. Tiny hole in the vellum of the lower board. Both pastedowns detached. Bookplate pasted on inside of the upper board. First title finger soiled. Almost invisible pinpoint wormhole at the tip of the right upper corner of ca. 250 p. Paper yellowing) (Note: The Greek Platonist Maximus Tyrus, ca. 125-185 AD, was an itinerant philosopher, who left us 41 dissertations (dalexeis) on theological, ethical and philosophical subjects. These lectures are not great literature, nor specimina of great learning. Philosophical originality is not be be looked for in these lectures. The author offers a pleasant prensentation of a theme, and his lectures 'are simply eloquent exhortations to virtue decked out in quotations, chiefly from Plato, and Homer'. (OCD 2nd ed. 658) The themes are for example: 'die Lust (hêdonê, 29-33), sokratische Liebe (18-22), platonische Theologie (11), 'daimones' (8-9), Gebet (5), Weissagung und freier Wille (13), das Böse (41) und Wiedererinnerung (10)'. (Neue Pauly, 7,1074/75) Maximus Tyrius was widely read by humanists like Ficino, Bessarion and Poliziano. The 'editio princeps' was published in 1557 by the French scholar/publisher Henricus Stephanus. The next important and authorative edition was published in 1607 by the Dutch scholar Daniel Heinsius, 1580-1655, who was in 1607 librarian of the University of Leiden. In 1609 he succeeded as professor of Greek his praeceptor Josephus Justus Scaliger. The first 300 pages of the first part of this book contain the Greek text of the 'Dissertationes', followed by a number of Pythagorean fragments, and by 27 pages 'castigationes' on Maximus Tyrius by Henricus Stephanus. The pages 329-386 contain the Greek text of Alcinous' handbook of Platonism 'Introductio in Platonicam philosophiam'; the pages 387-408 contain Diogenes Laertius on Plato. The second part contains Heinsius's Latin translation of Maximus Tyrius and Alcinous; added are 33 pages with a Latin translation of the earlier mentioned Pythagorean fragments, made by the Dutch scholar Willem Canter. At the end 27 pages filled with Apuleius's 'De Deo Socratis liber, qui Maximi Dissertat. de eodem respondet'. Part 3 contains the notes of Heinsius. Heinsius based his edition of Maximus Tyrius on that of Stephanus, but 'quae corrupta erant emendavimus, quae obscuriora, leviter illustravimus'. (Part 1, leaf *6 recto) But he was a conservative and reserved text critic, 'Nobis', he explains 'temeritas nunquam placuit, et si quid in autoribus peccandum est, timidus videri malo quam audax'. (Part 3, leaf a4 recto/verso) Heinsius also produced the Latin translation and notes. In a 'Lectori' to the third part Heinsius tells that the French scholar Isaac Casaubon sent him a manuscript of Maximus Tyrius's 'Dissertationes'. It arrived too late for amending the Greek text and Latin translation, but Heinsius used it for and in his notes. Heinsius received also some excerpts (excerpta quaedam) of Sixtus Arcerius, and the Heidelberg professor Marquard Freher, 1565-1614, sent him a manuscript from the Palatine Library) (Provenance: Armorial bookplate of the barony 'Sinclair', a shield divided into 4 fields, flanked by 2 griffons, a baron's coronet on top, above which a peer's helmet with mantlings, and a crest, consisting of a swam on its nest. Each of the four fields is filled with what seems a ship under sail. Old manuscript shelfmark on and under the bookplate. The motto reads: 'Fide sed pugna', 'with faith, but with fist') (Collation: *8, 2*4 (leaf 2*4 verso blank); a-u8, x4, y-cc8; pi2, b-dd8, cc4, a-k8) (Photographs on request)

Novo teatro di machine et edificii

Padua, 1607. FIRST EDITION. Engraved title and 42 full-page engravings. Contemporary vellum, remnants of ties, title in ink on spine; signature and date (eighteenth century) crossed out on title, initials and notation to front and back paste-downs, very minor spotting and browning, overall an excellent copy. First edition. This was the first of many works detailing and illustrating machinery (including those by Ramelli, Besson, Strada, etc.), all based upon the unpublished Trattado di architectura by Francesco di Giorgio Martini (1439-1501). Indeed, according to Norman, even Leonardo da Vinci had owned and annotated a copy of Francesco's treatise. Zonca's images, copied by many later writers, include inventions for mills such as a water mill running silk-spinners and a water-powered grain mill operated on a boat moored in a river, copper plating and printing presses, a barbeque spit turned by gears and a windmill, as well as a perpetual motion machine. "The work is noted for containing the first printed illustration of a gig-mill for raising nap on cloth, and for spreading knowledge of the mangle" (Norman). Zonca (1568-1602) was an Italian mechanical engineer. His book on machines went through four editions, and some of the plates were even published in a 1627 Chinese work on European mechanical arts, Qiqi Tushuo by Johann Schreck and Wang Zheng.

Oblong 1mo (47 x 58 cm). A large and extremely detailed engraved and etched view of the Battle of the Medway (pictorial image 42 x 58 cm), showing the stern of The Royal Charles in great detail, the capsized Loyal London in flames and the Dutch in row boats in the foreground, including Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, commander of the Dutch fleet, and Cornelis de Witt, deputy of the States General and brother of the Grand Pensionary Johan de Witt. With engraved captions at the foot, on either side of the De Witt coat of arms.

      - Muller, Ned. Historieplaten, 2261a; for Langendijk and Sallieth: Scheen, pp. 303 & 449. Large etched and engraved print showing the sensational and humiliating defeat of the English by the Dutch at the Battle of the Medway at Chatham, near Rochester. Langendijk places the viewer in the midst of the action, so that one sees the ships, people and the hand-to-hand combat on the rowboats in the foreground in the greatest detail. It was the decisive event of the Second Anglo-Dutch War, forcing the British to agree to end the war with a settlement favourable to the Dutch a month later. It was also the crowning achievement of the great Dutch admiral Michiel de Ruyter (1607-1676). The daring raid was planned by the Dutch Grand Pensionary Johan de Witt and carried out under command of Admiral De Ruyter, accompanied by De Witt's brother Cornelis.Trimmed down to the edges of the image and text, but without loss and in good condition, with only some traces of former mildew slightly affecting the caption and the water at the foot of the image, and a few tiny holes or small marginal tears repaired. The margins have been extended with Japanese paper. The most detailed and spectacular view of the Battle of the Medway.

Back with nerves decorated. part of title in red morocco. Coins and caps skilfully restored by a professional. Foxing. yellowed paper.Garnier (1545-1590) is undoubtedly the first great French tragedian. Most of his subjects are drawn from ancient times, but its last two pieces are firstly a Christian tragedy and the other a tragedy inspired by Ariosto. Friend of the poets of the Pleiades celebrating openly (contain the tragedies in the preliminary parts of poems Ronsart and Belleau, Baïf or even poems signed three), it was less appreciated by the court. His sense of tragedy is inherited from Seneca and Euripides where the tragic sense depends less on action than the sovereign word. Par Jean Fuzy A Paris 1607 In-12 648pp. relié

        Typus Orbis Terrarum.

Amsterdam: 1607. Handcoloured copper engraving, 290 x 180 mm. (sheet size), with letterpress to verso; mounted. Beautiful decorated double-hemisphere map of the world from the Atlas Minor published by Jodocus Hondius in 1607. In 1604 Hondius and a business partner purchased the copper plates from Mercator's estate and continued to print grand atlas editions from them, supplementing the original plates with further maps of their own. A few years afterwards Hondius re-engraved the plates in a smaller format and published the Atlas Minor of 1607, of which this world map was the opening attraction.Hondius, born Joost de Hondt in 1563, was one of the foremost Flemish cartographers and engravers of his generation. From an early age he showed precocious ability in the geographical sciences, mathematics and a range of languages. Born into a Protestant family, Hondius was forced to flee for England in 1584, a move that played an important role in his career as a cartographic innovator. During his employment in London, Hondius met and conversed with leading explorers and scholars of the era, a valuable exchange that sharpened his geographical knowledge and curiosity. He eventually settled and flourished in Amsterdam, here publishing atlases and maps in several European languages. The letterpress to the reverse of this map is in English, and describes the discovery of the Straits of Magellan. As was common for the era, this map of the earth depicts an enormous antipodes filling the entire southern ocean. A few scant details derived from actual geographical discoveries are noted, such as Tierra del Fuego and the coastline of New Guinea. Interestingly, the place-name 'Beach' (derived from the travels of Marco Polo) is retained while the Solomon Islands are blended with the vast mass of Terra Australis. Overall the map is a remarkably balanced and elegant creation, with a beautiful engraved border sheltering Hondius' favourite Psalm engraved in latin: 'The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it; the world, and all who dwell therein.'. A lovely example.

Aristophanes c. 446 – c. Large paper copy of the first edition, in the original Dutch, of the standard biography of the great Dutch naval hero Admiral Michiel Adriaansz. de Ruyter (1607-1676), who scored several major victories against the French and English, the best known abroad being the Raid on Chatham, one of the worst defeats of the British Royal Navy. For the present work Brandt used numerous original documents from De Ruyter's son and other private individuals, as well as from official government sources. "This resulted in a book that was not only based on good information, but through his exalted, lucid and engaging style also became a true folk-book in the best sense of the word" (NNBW).De Ruyter fought the English off the coast of West Africa, the Caribbean, temporarily took St John's, New Foundland, and even considered retaking New York. While the binding is somewhat scuffed along the spine, the book itself is in very good condition, with only an occasional spot.

SACRA Biblia vulgatae editionis Sixti Quinti Pont.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Palau, 16753 [Attributes: Hard Cover]
