SPIEGEL, Adriaan van de.
272, [16] pp.The Elzeviers' enlarged edition of the first book to give detailed instructions for forming a collection of dried plants, with a catalogue of the plants in the Botanical Garden of the University of Leiden, including plants from Brazil, Canada and the Virginia colony. The Isagoges, an introduction to (medical) botany that Spiegel wrote at age 28 in 1606, "demonstrates the extraordinary erudition and wisdom of the young man" (NBW). Though influenced by Dioscorides and Theophrastos, Spiegel attempted a new classification of plants, and Linnaeus had a high opinion of his work. Vorstius's catalogue added for this Elzevier edition is of particular interest for the American plants. With the owner's inscription of the philologist and judge Sir William Jones (1746-1794) on the back of the first flyleaf, with on the front the engraved bookplate of Thomas Edlyne Tomlins and his wife and Elizabeth dated 1830, and an engraving of Thomas Tomlins's name and address on the pastedown. The book is rebacked, as noted, retaining the original endpapers, but with the inside hinges repaired. Otherwise a very good copy, with only a couple leaves slightly browned and a small piece torn-off out of leaf N3, just touching the text.l Alden & Landis 633/114; BMC NH, p. 1991; Wellcome 6041; cf. CROCE, Giulio Cesare and Nikola PALIKUCA (translator).
71 pp.Very rare first edition of a Croatian translation of the popular comic novel Le sottilissime astuzie di Bertoldo by Giulio Cesare Croce, first published in 1606. Based on oral traditions, this highly popular novel told the story of the farmer Bertoldo, who is sometimes cunning and at other times stupid. In this Croatian version the translator "localized" the name of the main character to Nasreddin, thereby establishing a link with the famous 13th-century Turkish satirist Nasreddin Hodja, whose stories were well known in the Balkan region. The translator, Nikola Palikuca from Prokljan (near Šibenik) was probably the pseudonym of a friar or nun. A second edition of the book was published in 1799 in Venice. With owner's inscriptions on the final blank and interior of the wrapper and some pencil marks on the back of the title-page. Browned and with water stains throughout, nevertheless a structurally good copy of a very rare book.l Deželjin, "Bertoldi di Giulio Cesare Croce e il riflesso di quest'opera nell'altra sponda dell'Adriatico" in: Capasso, L'Italia altrove, atti del III convegno internazionale di studi dell'AIBA, pp. 135-144; not in WorldCat; ICCU.

PELLEPRAT, Pierre.
[16], 93, [1 blank]; [2], 121, [4], [3 blank]; 30, [2] pp.First (and only early) edition of a much sought classic of European Americana, ''one of the most valuable of the Jesuit 'Relations''' (Sabin). It provides a detailed account of the Jesuits' work in the French West Indies (part 1) and French Guyana (part 2). One 17-page chapter is devoted to the education of African-American and indigenous slaves. The second work, mentioned on the title-page of the first, but also sold separately, gives an account of the Carib language of the Galibi Indians of French Guyana. It made an important contribution to the study of American linguistics, and helped to preserve the language for posterity.Pelleprat (1606-1667), originally from Bordeaux, set off for America in 1639 and worked as a missionary at several of the Jesuit missions in the French West Indies, Mexico and French Guyana. His book was published by no less than Sebastien Cramoisy, who had set up the Imprimerie Royale at the Louvre for Louis XIII in 1640 and served as its first director.Slightly browned and spotted, but otherwise a very good copy of an essential and much sought Americana.l Alden & Landis 655/142-143; De Backer & Sommervogel VI, cols. 449-450 (''rare et recherché'); Leclerc 1328; Sabin 59578.

"Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica Ac Hydrographica Tabula" copper engraving first published in 1606 by Willem Bleau in Amsterdam. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 55 x 41 cm. Nice example of Blaeu's classic world map in the so-called Mercator projection. This is one of the most famous landmarks of 17th-century cartography. Engraved and signed by Joshua van den Ende, reduced from Blaeu's wall map of 1605, it first appeared as a separate publication in 1606. In 1630 it was incorporated into Willem Blaeu's "Atlantis Appendix" and then into the "Atlas Novus" in all subsequent editions until 1658. Its influence was enormous, and it was closely copied by some of the greatest Dutch cartographers, such as Pieter Van der Keere and Johannes Janssonius. Others, such as the house of Hondius, were forced to produce their own highly decorative maps to compete. Geographically, the map was a reduction of Blaeu's large map of the world published in 1605. The charming cartouche in the interior of North America mentions its discovery by Columbus in 1492 and being named after Amerigo Vespucci in 1499. There is some confusion in the depiction of the landmass of the East coast of the United States, probably as a result of Indian reports of large bodies of water inland, almost certainly the Great Lakes. California is correctly shown as a peninsula. The Le Maire straits, separating Tierra del Fuego from South America, copied from an earlier map by Hondius, are clearly shown. In the north, a note beside "Nova Zembla" in the Arctic declares that it was reached by Willem Barents in 1596. In the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gouvea, Antonio de
Coimbra : Na O cina de Diogo Gomez Loureyro Impressor da Vniversidade, 1606. A record of Archbishop Aleixo de Menezes’s travels to the Malabar Coast. Menezes (1559-1617) was the Viceroy of Portugal (from 1612 to 1615), the Archbishop of Braga, Portugal, and the Catholic Archbishop of Goa. In 1599 he convened the Synod of Diamper, a diocesan council that created regulations for the ancient Saint Thomas Christians of the Malabar Coast in southwestern India, and united them with the Catholic Church. This text includes important descriptions of the churches, customs, and traditions of the St. T homas Christians before the community’s practices were branded heretical by the Goa Inquisition in 1561: “Latin vestments, rituals, and customs were introduced to replace the ancient traditions. e forced Latinization and disregard for local tradition were accompanied by violence and led to schism among Thomas Christians by the mid-17th century” (“Synod of Diamper”, Britannica, 2017). e appendix, “Synodo diocesano ”, bound at the end of the book, lists the synod’s decrees. The book was probably compiled from notes taken by Menezes during his travels. An extremely scarce record of an early Christian community in India. Boards lightly worn and scraped. Marbled endpapers. Some wormholing to extremities of fi rst few leaves. Signifi cant professional repairs to margins of last few leaves. Light occasional stains to text, mostly to centre of fi rst 20 or so leaves. Text also lightly browned. Very occasional notes in a contemporary hand. Overall very good. 1 v., complete. [6], 152, [2], 62 leav … [Click Below for Full Description]

Zustand: Inside with one bookplate of the Royal Military College and one bookplate of Thomas Francis Fremantle, continuously slight damp-staining and somewhat creased below. Italian Language. From the Military Library by the Lord Cottesloe.
