Rechtfertigung der Vornehmsten Verrather in Englandt, 1606

1606 - A Vivid Contemporary Depiction of the Execution of Guy Fawkes and His Co-Conspirators [Fawkes, Guy (1570-1606)]. Keller, Georg [1576-1640]. Rechtfertigung der Vornehmsten Verrather In Engellandt. [Frankfurt], 1606. 10" x 8" copperplate engraving, "G. Keller 1606" at foot of image, trimmed to edges, attractively mounted and matted. Moderate even toning, a few negligible dust spots, three faint vertical fold lines. An attractive, well-inked impression. $1,500. * Led by Guy Fawkes, the Gunpowder Plot was a failed an attempt by a group of Catholics to assassinate King James I by blowing up the House of Lords during the State Opening of Parliament in 1605. The plot was foiled when Fawkes was discovered with a cache of explosives beneath the House of Lords. Fawkes and his co-conspirators were executed in 1606. This vivid image by Keller, the notable Frankfurt artist and engraver, depicts the execution of Fawkes and his fellow conspirators. It appears to have been modeled on an image by the Dutch engraver Claes Jansz Visscher [1587-1652].

- VD17 23:300876Y; Millard III, 55; vgl.         Andaluziae nova descript

Artist: Hondius Hendrik (d) ; issued in: Amsterdam; date: (d)1606 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Some restoration at centerfold; - size (in cm): 36 x 50; - description: Map shows Andalusia; - vita of the artist: "Jodocus Hondius (1563 ?1612) was a Dutch engraver, and cartographer. He is best known for his early maps of the New World and Europe, for re-establishing the reputation of the work of Gerard Mercator, and for his portraits of Francis Drake. He helped establish Amsterdam as the center of cartography in Europe in the 17th century. He was born in Wakken and grew up in Ghent. In his early years he established himself as an engraver, instrument maker and globe maker. In 1584 he moved to London to escape religious difficulties in Flanders. While in England, Hondius was instrumental in publicizing the work of Francis Drake, who had made a circumnavigation of the world in the late 1570s. In particular, in 1589 Hondius produced a now famous map of the bay of New Albion, where Drake briefly established a settlement on the west coast of North America. Hondius' map was based on journal and eyewitness accounts of the trip and has long fueled speculation about the precise location of Drake's landing, which has not yet been firmly established by historians. Hondius is also thought to be the artist of several well-known portraits of Drake that are now in the National Portrait Gallery in London. In 1593 he moved to Amsterdam, where he remained until the end of his life. In co-operation with the Amsterdam publisher Cornelis Claesz. in 1604 he purchased the plates of Gerard Mercator's Atlas from Mercator's grandson. Mercator's work had languished in comparison to the rival Theatrum Orbis Terrarum by Ortelius. Hondius republished Mercator's work with 36 additional maps, including several which he himself had produced. Despite the addition of his own contributions, Hondius gave Mercator full credit as the author of the work, listing himself as the publisher. Hondius' new edition of Mercator's work was a great success, selling out after a year. Hondius later published a second edition, as well as a pocket version Atlas Minor. The maps have since become known as the "Mercator/Hondius series".In the French edition of the Atlas Minor we find one of the first instances of a thematic map using map symbols. This is a map entitled Designatio orbis christiani (1607) showing the dispersion of major religions.[1]Between 1605 and 1610 he was employed by John Speed to engrave the plates for Speed's The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine.Hondius died, aged 48, in Amsterdam. After his death, his publishing work in Amsterdam was continued by his widow, two sons, Jodocus II and Henricus, and son-in-law Johannes Janssonius, whose name appears on the Atlas as co-publisher after 1633.[2] Eventually, starting with the first 1606 edition in Latin, about 50 editions of the Atlas were released in the main European languages. In the Islamic world, the atlas was partially translated by the Turkish scholar Katip Çelebi. The series is sometimes called the "Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius" series because of Janssonius's later contributions." [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

De lo schermo o vero scienza d'arme. (2 Parts).

Copenhagen, Henrik Waldkirch, 1606. Folio. Later marbled paper binding with handwritten title to spine. A neat repair to blank margin of title-page, no loss of imprint, and A3 with a repaired lower corner, resulting in loss of four words, supplied in old hand. Tiny loss to lower blank margin of last three leaves, far from affecting printing. Apart from that a very nice copy with only some light brownspotting to the first leaves. Engraved title-page inside a large composition in baroque-style (Jan Halbeeck) and on verso of title the Danish Royal Coat of arms (Halbeeck), engraved portrait of King Christian IV, to whom the work is dedicated (drawn and engraved by Nicolaus Andrea). Title to the second part with a large engraved portrait of Fabris (Nic. Andrea, after Melchior Lorck). (6), 256, (2) pp. The work comprises 190 splendid half-page engravings (ab 15 x 18 cm.), showing all sorts of difficult fencing positions, each with two naked fencers (engraved by Jan Halbeeck and Francesco Valeggio). The scarce first edition, first issue of this splendid work, which not only constitutes one of the most important works ever produced on combats with rapier and dagger, but also the first Danish book with copper-engravings and one of the absolute highlights of Danish book production. Chs. Richard Cammell in "Philobiblon" 1936 calls it "the most complete work produced in this art...It is also the first book printed in Denmark to have copper-engraved illustrations". The work is also known as "The Fencing Book of Christian IV", as the book was dedicated to and made for the great king, whose fencing instructor Fabris was. Salvator Fabris (1544-1618) was an Italian fencing master from Padua, who taught in many European cities, most notably Denmark, where became fencing master to King Christian IV. It was during his time in Denmark that he published his splendid work on fencing, which became a fencing bestseller all around Europe. The work was reprinted numerous times up until until 1713 and translated into several different languages. In 2005 the work was translated again into English. The splendid first printing was done by Henrik Waldkirch and is regarded as one of the very finest examples of baroque printing. "The type of book that this work represents was, at the time of its appearance, something quite new in this country, and if the book had not contained a specific reference to it, one would never imagine that it had been produced in this country as early as 1606." (Own translation from the Danish - in L. Nielsen: "Den Danske Bog" p. 101). "Fabris divides his work into two books and six parts. The first book treats throughly the question of broad principles and of the more 'academic' actions with the rapier alone, or accompanied with dagger or cloak; it discusses in a very exhaustive manner the relative value of the past and present methods. The second book is one wherein is demonstrated certain rules with which it will be possible to strike the enemy from the moment the sword is drawn, without halting or waiting any time, principles which has never been treated by any master or writer" (Thimm p. 97). The book was immensely influential and was plagiarized by many other fencing masters, just as Fabris' style was adopted by several official fencing institutions (e.g. the University of Jena).A second issue appeared in Padua in 1624.Brunet II:1155; Birkelund nr. 37; Thesaurus 456; Cockle: 754.
