[110] pp. Collation: A-G^8 (A1, G8 blank, -G8). Small 8vo. Nineteenth century straight-grained purple morocco, covers with French fillet border, smooth spine decorated and titled in gilt, gilt turn-ins, a.e.g. A fine, well-preserved copy in custom brown morocco pull-off case by J. Kulesho. First Jaggard edition (?piracy). Woodcut headpiece and printer's ornaments on title and "Of the Colours" section title, woodcut initials. [110] pp. Collation: A-G^8 (A1, G8 blank, -G8). Small 8vo. The Corser-Huth-Hartz-Pirie Copy. The first Jaggard edition and the fourth overall edition of the Essayes of statesman and philosopher Francis Bacon (1561-1626). Jaggard made no entry of this or his 1612 and 1613 editions of the Essayes in the Stationers' Register, and so it has been customary to regard his editions as piracies. Jackson gently disputes this notion in the note to Pforzheimer 29, suggesting that a later transfer of rights to Jaggard's widow in 1624, as well as the silence of Hopper and Beale (who did register their rights with the Stationers' Company), argues for Jaggard having some right to the Essayes. "In some manner, therefore, Jaggard must have himself secured 'rights' which the Stationers' Company regarded as transferable even though not previously entered in the Register" (Pforzheimer). In any case, a rare edition: we trace only this copy at auction. The Essayes, which went into numerous editions in the author's lifetime and eventually expanded from the 10 essays printed here to 58 in the 1625 edition, treat moral and political topics in "a terse, aphoristic style … which Bacon conceived as a genre setting down discrete observations on life, and aspiring to some kind of objective validity" (ODNB). "In an age of complicated and superficial verbiage, [Bacon] turns the licence of imaginative and allusive expression into an instrument of accurate and chastened thought" (Cambridge History of English and American Literature). The Essayes were originally circulated in manuscript among Bacon's friends - the threat of a pirated edition by Richard Seeger lead to Bacon entrusting the work to Humfrey Hooper for publication in 1597. A fine copy with exceptional provenance. ESTC S104434; Gibson 4 (as fourth ed.); not in Pforzheimer, but cf. 29. Provenance: Rev. Thomas Corser (Sotheby's, 17 March 1869, Part II, lot 61); Henry Huth (acquired at foregoing sale through Frederick S. Ellis, red morocco booklabel, his sale, Sotheby's, 17 November 1911, Part I, lot 386); Henry Sotheran; R. Hartz; John Fleming; Robert S Pirie (acquired 1978, his bookplate)

De Jesu Christi servatoris nostri vera anno, consideration novissimae sententiae Laurentii Suslygae Poloni. [SYLVA CHRONOLOGICA]

Biblioteca Kepleriana n° 27. Lalande 145 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Den kleynen herbarius ofte kruyt boecxken, ...Rotterdam, Pieter van Waesberge, 1637. Small 8vo. With woodcut device on the title-page. 20th-century boards covered with marbled paper.

Not found recorded; cf. BMN I, p. 502; Krivatsy 6188; KVK & WorldCat (similar 1606, 1614, & 1638 eds.). Only copy located of the only known Rotterdam edition of a very popular household medical guide for the use of the common folk, by Heyman Jacobs (active 1596-1645), identified on the title-page only as "H.I.", a Catholic in Haarlem who wrote two books on folk medicine, as well as folk and school books on other subjects. After the preliminaries, the medical herbal proper gives accounts of the medicinal properties of nuts, berries, herbs, grains, fruits, roots, flowers and other plants, foods or substances, with instructions for their preparation and use to cure or prevent illnesses. The account of tobacco, not yet cultivated in the Netherlands when Jacobs wrote, notes that it is imported from the West Indies and can be smoked in a pipe or steeped in wine overnight for drinking. The book continues with a "Medicinael remedi boecxken", with medicinal recipes intended for the poor, arranged by the various ailments, and ends with "Een schone visitatie, by den siecken ende krancke menschen" a guide for visiting and comforting the sick and dying. More than twenty pre-1700 editions survive, but most copies were worn out with use so that all editions are now rare and some are lost.In very good condition, with only a 2 cm tear in the text of 1 leaf and a couple small marginal chips, not approaching the text, and only slightly trimmed, preserving point holes in most quires. Unrecorded Rotterdam edition of a popular guide to herbal medicine.

        Irlandia regnum

Amsterdam: Jodocus Hondius. unbound. Map. c. 1606. Engraving. Image measures 13" x 16.25". This stunning circa 1606 map by Gerard Mercator depicts Ireland or the Emerald Isle. Oriented with north to the right, it is beautifully detailed and notes numerous towns and cities with topography beautifully rendered and a stipple engraved sea. It features a ribbon style title banner. The map depicts Ireland just a few years after the Nine Year War and the famine of Ulster. It includes Mercator's imprint in the bottom left and appeared in his "Atlas sive Cosmographicae". The map is in very good condition with minimal wear to centerfold and minor foxing at places. Wide margins.

Gerardum Mercator (1512-1594) was an accomplished mathematician, cartographer, globe maker and engraver but is best known for the Mercator Projection. Incorporating the newly accepted fact that the world is round, Mercator was able to render longitude lines consistently straight on a chart. Although this requires some distortion, it was of great use for navigators, and is historically important, as it is still the most commonly used projection today. Although their partnership was only indirect, Mercator and Hondius are one of the most significant pairs in the history of mapmaking.

World map - Willem Bleau, 1606 or later.

"Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica Ac Hydrographica Tabula' copper engraving first published in 1606 by Willem Bleau in Amsterdam. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 55 x 41 cm.Nice example of Blaeu"s classic world map in the so-called Mercator projection. This is one of the most famous landmarks of 17th-century cartography. Engraved and signed by Joshua van den Ende, reduced from Blaeu"s wall map of 1605, it first appeared as a separate publication in 1606. In 1630 it was incorporated into Willem Blaeu"s "Atlantis Appendix' and then into the "Atlas Novus' in all subsequent editions until 1658. Its influence was enormous, and it was closely copied by some of the greatest Dutch cartographers, such as Pieter Van der Keere and Johannes Janssonius. Others, such as the house of Hondius, were forced to produce their own highly decorative maps to compete.Geographically, the map was a reduction of Blaeu's large map of the world published in 1605. The charming cartouche in the interior of North America mentions its discovery by Columbus in 1492 and being named after Amerigo Vespucci in 1499. There is some confusion in the depiction of the landmass of the East coast of the United States, probably as a result of Indian reports of large bodies of water inland, almost certainly the Great Lakes. California is correctly shown as a peninsula. The Le Maire straits, separating Tierra del Fuego from South America, copied from an earlier map by Hondius, are clearly shown. In the north, a note beside "Nova Zembla' in the Arctic declares that it was reached by Willem Barents in 1596. In the Far East Korea is shown as an island and northern Australia is shown without any place names.Decoratively the most striking features of this map are the magnificent and innovative panelled borders. The upper border shows allegorical figures of the sun and moon and the five known planets; Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Along the bottom border are depictions of the seven wonders of the ancient world; the hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Colossus at Rhodes, the Pyramids at Giza, the Mausoleum of Hallicarnassus, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia and the Lighthouse at Alexandria. Running down the left hand side of the map are representations of the four elements (Fire, Air, Water and Earth) and on the right, the Four Seasons.Reference : Rodney Shirley "The Mapping of the World", no. 255Price: € 11.500,- (incl. frame).

Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 13.75 x 19.25". Sheet measures 17.5 x 21.5". This map of central Africa includes the Red Sea and the horn of Africa, extending south to the present-day Democratic Republic of the Congo. An inset in the upper right shows the Christian regions of Africa on the coast of the Atlantic. Published circa 1606, the map has a decorative scheme that includes pictorial mountains and engraved textures that mimic ocean waves. Hand coloring used to separate regions extends to the map's border, which is a pale pink. The map is in very good condition with no chips ot tears and ample margins. Some discoloration at center fold, primarily in the top margin.

Gerard Mercator (1512-1594) was an accomplished mathematician, cartographer, globe maker and engraver but is best known for the Mercator Projection. Incorporating the newly accepted fact that the world is round, Mercator was able to render longitude lines consistently straight on a chart. Although this requires some distortion, it was of great use for navigators, and is historically important, as it is still the most commonly used projection today.

Epulario, Il Quale Tratta del Modo del Cucinare ogni Carnes, Uccelli, & Pesci d'orgni Sorte

Messina: Lorenzo Valla, 1606. Later Edition. Hardcover (Half Leather). Good Condition. Small octavo rebound in half morocco. New endpapers, title soiled with old notes crossed out and top edge of typographical border trimmed, modest foxing, a few minor stains, lacking leaves G1 and 2 (49 and 50) and G 7 and 8 (the final two index leaves). 49 (of 51), (3) (of 5) leaves. Cagle 1177 (1630 ed.), Bitting (1750 ed.), Vicaire 750 (various eds.). Originally published in this incarnation in 1516, the Epulario plagiarized Maestro Martino's famous 15th century cookbook and expanded its audience exponentially. Martino was originally cribbed for Platina's famous De Honesta Voluptate, but this edition, by the likely fictitious Rosselli, spread his recipes everywhere. It went through numerous editions all the way up until 1750 and was famously translated into English in 1598 where one of the recipes spawned the 4 and 20 blackbirds recipe. An enormously important cookbook for its transmission of the Western World's first modern book of recipes. Just about all the editions are rare - this edition with one (microform) copy in Worldcat. The First [and second] part of a treatise concerning policy and religion.

      n. pr. [L. Kellan and P. Auroi], Douai 1606 - FIRST EDITIONS, 2 vols, 4to. pp (lii) 461 (i) + (xxiv) 697 (xix). Roman letter, titles within typographical border (second repaired at fore edge) woodcut initials and ornaments. First t.p. mounted, light age yellowing, the occasional minor mark, stain or spot. Good clean copies, upper margin to second part a bit tight in places, in mid C17 panelled calf, slightly worn in the usual places, edges speckled red. First editions of both parts of this anti-Machiavellian classic which enjoyed the remarkable distinction of being admired by both Catholics and Protestants. Fitzherbert was the heir of a distinguished recusant family, the grandson of the noted jurist Sir Anthony Fitzherbert and a zealous defender of English Catholicism. In 1572, aged 20, he was imprisoned for recusancy and on release became acquainted with Parsons and Campion. In 1588 on the death of his wife, he removed to Spain and was active in the affairs of Catholic exiles and at one point charged with conspiracy to poison Queen Elizabeth. He was in fact closely watched by Elizabeth's spies and his name recurs in the state papers of the period. In 1601 he was ordained priest, acted for twelve years as the agent in Rome of the English clergy and in 1613 joined the Society of Jesus. He was successively superior of the English mission at Brussels and rector of the English college at Rome, remaining en poste almost until his death in 1640, at the remarkable age of 88, "an object of admiration and esteem, not only of Catholics, but even for those who differed from him in religion" Gillow II p. 285. The first part of this diversely learned treatise expounds the insufficiency of human understanding and policy, unaided, to rightly order the affairs of this world and what dangers and detriment mankind suffers when it presumes to be left to its own devices. The second more expressly treats of the human need for religion to properly order man’s life on every level, physical, social, political as well as spiritual. Fitzherbert draws numerous examples from history, ancient medieval and modern, from classical philosophy and from the Bible, the Fathers and the doctrine of the Church. Unlike most of his other works it is not overtly a sectarian polemic but a refutation of heresy, atheism and paganism new and old, drawn from both a profound knowledge of history and an extensive experience of men, a plea for allowing Christian piety to order their affairs and right the wrongs of mankind. A supposed third part was published posthumously in 1652. STC 11016.5 and 11019. Lowndes II 804. Gillow II 286:2, "It is a masterpiece of reasoning and learning, and a clear refutation of many of Machiavelli’s principles". Allison & Rogers II 280 and 285 "Within the general framework of a discussion about political principles. This work contains a veiled attack on the policies of the English government".

(11 1/8 x 7 1/2 inches). Letterpress title to part II. Engraved title to part I, 1 engraved folding map, numerous woodcut diagrams. (Appreciable old dampstaining to engraved title and the following leaves to B2, I4-L6, Z1 to the end). Early 20th-century vellum, covers panelled in gilt and blind with central lozenge-shaped arabesque ornament blocked in gilt, the flat spine with fillets in gilt and blind, and author, title and date of publication in gilt Provenance: "Capuchinos el Cubas" (early inscription on verso of title to second part) First and only edition of this early 17th-century Spanish navigation manual, complete with an engraved world map. García de Cespedes served as Royal Cosmographer to Phillip III of Spain and held the chair of cosmography at the navigators' school in Seville. He took some of the information on navigation and mathematics from a source which is attributed to Pedro Nuñez, but the present work is otherwise substantially his own. It consists of two separate sections, each with its own titlepage, devoted to navigation and hydrography, and there are approximately 110 woodcut diagrams and illustrations of instruments - about 92 in the first part and 18 in the second. The final chapter is particularly interesting: it provides instructions for navigation in the Americas with sailing directions for the West Indies, Veracruz and Havana as well as instructions from Spain to Rio de la Plata, the Straits of Magellan, and the Pacific coast of South America. The text also includes documents relating to the dispute between Spain and Portugal regarding the line of demarcation between those countries' territories in the New World as initially created by Papal decree in 1493. The folding engraved world map consists of twelve gores and is "without title or decoration other than four compass roses. The lines of demarcation between the Spanish and Portuguese sectors of influence are shown. The gores are probably not intended to be more than illustrative although the west coast of South America has been noted as being surprisingly accurate for the time" (Shirley). European Americana 606/50; JCB (3) II:39; JCB Maritime Hand-list 68; Medina (BHA) 515; Palau 98619; Sabin 11718; cf. Shirley 256 (for the map); Wagner Northwest Coast 244.

Emblemata amatoria: iam demum emendata. [Amsterdam, ca. 1610]. Oblong 4to. With engraved title-page and 24 circular engraved emblems by Jacob de Gheyn, with captions in Latin, French or Italian, mottos in Latin in the borders of the emblems, and captions and 2 distichs in Latin on the facing pages. 18th-century vellum. .

Landwehr, Emblem Books Low Countries 215 (3 copies); Praz, p. 96 (note); STCN (4 copies). Very rare edition using the engraved title-page and plates of Daniel Heinsius's first original emblem book, but with a different Latin text, the only edition with the present distichs in Latin by the otherwise unknown I.A. Timmermans, possibly a humorous pseudonym of Heinsius, using a Dutch pseudonym for this Latin edition instead of the Latin pseudonym Theocritus à Ganda, which he used in 1606 for the Dutch Spiegel vande ... vrouwen.Although the title-page and the engraved emblems are the same as Heinsius's earlier Emblemata amatoria, the accompanying poetry is quite different. The first poem is signed with the initials I.A.T. and emblem 24 with the full name I.A. Timmermans. Also interesting is that three of the emblems bear the name of Hugo Grotius, but his actual contribution is unknown.Water stains in lower margin (a few leaves restored), one quire misbound, some occasional thumbing and first three leaves slightly soiled. Reasonable copy..

AN ESSAY OF THE MEANES HOVV TO MAKE OUR TRAUAILES, INTO FORRAINE COUNTRIES, THE MORE PROFITABLE AND HONOURABLE

London, 1606. Small quarto. Dbd. A couple tears in folds of tables with no loss; some margins shaved, affecting some text, headlines, or catchwords. Otherwise about fine. In a cloth chemise and brown half morocco and cloth box. One of the classic early English works on travel in foreign parts, a by-product of the great Elizabethan expansion into the world. This is the Marquis of Lothian's copy, sold at Anderson Galleries in 1932. Palmer was appointed high sheriff of Kent in 1595. The following year he accompanied the expedition to Cadiz and was knighted. Noted by Rosenbach as "exceedingly rare," Palmer discusses in this work the advantages of foreign travel and outlines some commercial and political principles of which the traveller should be apprised. He outlines reasons for travel, from tourism to spying, and the economic imperatives for going overseas in the expanding world. Several references are made to America, with notes on the customs and manners of the Indians, etc.
