Epulario, Il Quale Tratta del Modo del Cucinare ogni Carnes, Uccelli, & Pesci d'orgni Sorte

Messina: Lorenzo Valla, 1606. Later Edition. Hardcover (Half Leather). Good Condition. Small octavo rebound in half morocco. New endpapers, title soiled with old notes crossed out and top edge of typographical border trimmed, modest foxing, a few minor stains, lacking leaves G1 and 2 (49 and 50) and G 7 and 8 (the final two index leaves). 49 (of 51), (3) (of 5) leaves. Cagle 1177 (1630 ed.), Bitting (1750 ed.), Vicaire 750 (various eds.). Originally published in this incarnation in 1516, the Epulario plagiarized Maestro Martino's famous 15th century cookbook and expanded its audience exponentially. Martino was originally cribbed for Platina's famous De Honesta Voluptate, but this edition, by the likely fictitious Rosselli, spread his recipes everywhere. It went through numerous editions all the way up until 1750 and was famously translated into English in 1598 where one of the recipes spawned the 4 and 20 blackbirds recipe. An enormously important cookbook for its transmission of the Western World's first modern book of recipes. Just about all the editions are rare - this edition with one (microform) copy in Worldcat. Size: 8vo. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Cooking, Wine & Dining; Inventory No: CAT000289.

(11 1/8 x 7 1/2 inches). Letterpress title to part II. Engraved title to part I, 1 engraved folding map, numerous woodcut diagrams. (Appreciable old dampstaining to engraved title and the following leaves to B2, I4-L6, Z1 to the end). Early 20th-century vellum, covers panelled in gilt and blind with central lozenge-shaped arabesque ornament blocked in gilt, the flat spine with fillets in gilt and blind, and author, title and date of publication in gilt Provenance: "Capuchinos el Cubas" (early inscription on verso of title to second part) First and only edition of this early 17th-century Spanish navigation manual, complete with an engraved world map. García de Cespedes served as Royal Cosmographer to Phillip III of Spain and held the chair of cosmography at the navigators' school in Seville. He took some of the information on navigation and mathematics from a source which is attributed to Pedro Nuñez, but the present work is otherwise substantially his own. It consists of two separate sections, each with its own titlepage, devoted to navigation and hydrography, and there are approximately 110 woodcut diagrams and illustrations of instruments - about 92 in the first part and 18 in the second. The final chapter is particularly interesting: it provides instructions for navigation in the Americas with sailing directions for the West Indies, Veracruz and Havana as well as instructions from Spain to Rio de la Plata, the Straits of Magellan, and the Pacific coast of South America. The text also includes documents relating to the dispute between Spain and Portugal regarding the line of demarcation between those countries' territories in the New World as initially created by Papal decree in 1493. The folding engraved world map consists of twelve gores and is "without title or decoration other than four compass roses. The lines of demarcation between the Spanish and Portuguese sectors of influence are shown. The gores are probably not intended to be more than illustrative although the west coast of South America has been noted as being surprisingly accurate for the time" (Shirley).

Brunet IV, 317. Edition non citée.

Emblemata amatoria: iam demum emendata. [Amsterdam, ca. 1610]. Oblong 4to. With engraved title-page and 24 circular engraved emblems by Jacob de Gheyn, with captions in Latin, French or Italian, mottos in Latin in the borders of the emblems, and captions and 2 distichs in Latin on the facing pages. 18th-century vellum. .

Landwehr, Emblem Books Low Countries 215 (3 copies); Praz, p. 96 (note); STCN (4 copies). Very rare edition using the engraved title-page and plates of Daniel Heinsius's first original emblem book, but with a different Latin text, the only edition with the present distichs in Latin by the otherwise unknown I.A. Timmermans, possibly a humorous pseudonym of Heinsius, using a Dutch pseudonym for this Latin edition instead of the Latin pseudonym Theocritus à Ganda, which he used in 1606 for the Dutch Spiegel vande ... vrouwen.Although the title-page and the engraved emblems are the same as Heinsius's earlier Emblemata amatoria, the accompanying poetry is quite different. The first poem is signed with the initials I.A.T. and emblem 24 with the full name I.A. Timmermans. Also interesting is that three of the emblems bear the name of Hugo Grotius, but his actual contribution is unknown.Water stains in lower margin (a few leaves restored), one quire misbound, some occasional thumbing and first three leaves slightly soiled. Reasonable copy..

AN ESSAY OF THE MEANES HOVV TO MAKE OUR TRAUAILES, INTO FORRAINE COUNTRIES, THE MORE PROFITABLE AND HONOURABLE

London, 1606. Small quarto. Dbd. A couple tears in folds of tables with no loss; some margins shaved, affecting some text, headlines, or catchwords. Otherwise about fine. In a cloth chemise and brown half morocco and cloth box. One of the classic early English works on travel in foreign parts, a by-product of the great Elizabethan expansion into the world. This is the Marquis of Lothian's copy, sold at Anderson Galleries in 1932. Palmer was appointed high sheriff of Kent in 1595. The following year he accompanied the expedition to Cadiz and was knighted. Noted by Rosenbach as "exceedingly rare," Palmer discusses in this work the advantages of foreign travel and outlines some commercial and political principles of which the traveller should be apprised. He outlines reasons for travel, from tourism to spying, and the economic imperatives for going overseas in the expanding world. Several references are made to America, with notes on the customs and manners of the Indians, etc.

Title within fine engraved architectural border incorporating the printer’s device below, of two cockerels eating corn, the arms of the dedicatee Luigi Capponi above, putti at sides with the figures of Justice and Beauty above, woodcut initials and headpieces, typographical and woodcut ornaments. Some very light age yellowing in places. A very good copy, crisp and clean, in earlier limp vellum from an antiphonal leaf. First edition of these madrigals by Manfredo Muzio, dedicated to the Cardinal Luigi Capponi, most of which are addressed to women. Manfredi, a poet and dramatist from Cesena, was a member of the noble Manfredi family of Faenza. He was employed at the French court in Nancy as secretary to the Duchess of Brunswick, where he wrote much of his most famous work. He was extremely well connected in Italian literary circles, Diomede Borghesi in one of his letters refers to having met him with Tasso and describes him as "da costumi preclarissimi, e da bellisima letteratura". He is best remembered now for his plays however he wrote a considerable amount of poetry, nearly all of which was addressed to, and in praise of, female contemporaries. "Perhaps the supreme exponent in this period of the role of "celebrant of women" was the poet and courtier Muzio Manfredi of Fermo (1535 - 1607), a ubiquitous figure in the academic culture of the time, though now best remembered as a dramatist. (Semiramis [1593]). In his long career, Manfredi published numerous volumes of poetry, mainly madrigals, almost all devoted to the praise of women. One of his first works published, the anthology ‘Per donne romane’, of 1575, is prefaced by an open letter "to the ladies" (Alle donne) in which Manfredi speaks of himself as having "placed all my efforts and study in that manner of letters I thought pleasing to you and most fitted to exalt your fame: that is the excellency of poetry, a truly divine art and one appropriate to your divinity." This devotion is manifested in four further volumes, ‘Cento donne cantate’ (1580), ‘Cento madrigali’ (1587), Cento sonetti . in lode delle donne di Ravenna (1602), and ‘Madrigali . sopra molti soggetti stravaganti composti’ (1606), the first three entirely devoted to women, the last including a handful of poems to men. . Compositely, these volumes portray Manfredi as engaged in an admiring and flirtatious dialogue not only with the cream of Italian aristocratic womanhood but also with ‘donne virtuose’, as he refers to them in ‘Il contrasto amoroso’." Virginia Cox, ‘Women's writing in Italy, 1400-1650.’ Many of the poems addressed to women in this collection are prefaced by a short note describing their relationship, or an event from her life and many of them are addressed to prominent women writers, actors and singers. An excellent copy of this rare first edition. BM STC It. C17th p. 527. Not in Gamba. See Axel Erdmann "My Gracious Silence" 16 for a description of another of his collection of Madrigals dedicated to women. Italian [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Roberto Meietti,, Treviso, 1606 - Treviso, Roberto Meietti, 1606. Kl.-8°. 8 n.n. Bl. 715 S. 2 weisse Blatt. Pergamentband der Zeit mit handschriftlichem Rückentitel. Hirsch I, 689. - HOH 195. - Krivatsy 2344. - Einzelne Lagen leicht gebräunt, sonst sehr gut erhaltenes Exemplar in gutem Einband. De reliquis animalibus exanguibus libri quatuor, post mortem eius editi: nempe de mollibus, crustaceis, testaceis, et zoophytis.

Bologna, Giovanni Battista Bellagamba, 1606 [colophon 1605] - Folio (355 x 238 mm), pp [viii, including engraved title and portrait] 593 [recte 595] 29, with engraved title, engraved portrait, and ca 600 woodcuts in text; two small old marginal repairs to title (pre-binding), paper flaw on T1 not affecting text, blank corner of Qq[6] torn away, a very fine, crisp, clean copy on thick paper, in early eighteenth-century Italian vellum, spine gilt with greek key patterns and orange label, engraved bookplate and old ecclesiastical library stamp on recto of dedication leaf. £3250First edition, with the rare portrait, of Aldrovandi's treatise on molluscs, crustacea, and zoophytes, one of the earliest works devoted almost entirely to shells. This was the largest assembly of conchological illustrations and descriptions to date, and was part of Aldrovandi's massive zoological encyclopaedia, which was both a rival to and an extension of Gesner's great survey of the animal kingdom. Many of the descriptions and illustrations are based on specimens in Aldrovandi's own museum of natural history specimens. This volume was edited and published posthumously by Aldrovandi's widow Francesca. The Aldrovandi Museum in the University of Bologna preserves most of the woodblocks, the drawings for them, and many of the original specimens depicted.Aldrovandi (1522-1605), the great Bolognan naturalist, was inspired to study natural history by meeting Guillaume Rondelet in Rome, where Aldrovandi was obliged to go to defend himself against charges of heresy. 'Rondelet was then gathering material for his work on fishes. Aldrovandi, who accompanied the French physician to fish markets in order to study the various species, finally decided to study natural history, and began collecting specimens for his own museum.'Although Aldrovandi is not identified with any revolutionary discoveries, his work as a teacher and as the author of volumes that constitute an irreplaceable cultural patrimony earns him a place among the fathers of modern science. Perhaps most importantly, he was among the first to attempt to free the natural sciences from the stifling influence of the authority of textbooks, for which he substituted, as far as possible, direct study and observation of the animal, vegetable, and mineral worlds' (DSB).The portrait, often missing, is after Carracci according to Nissen.Nissen ZBI 68
