Handschrift in deutscher Sprache: "Alte Landesordnung: Anno 1535: die Mitwoch nach dem Ersten Sontage in der Fasten zue Znaim von allen vier Ständen des Marggrafthums Mähren im Allgemeinen Landtage bey Anwesenheit Ihrer Maj. Königs Ferdinandi ... auffgesuchet unnd beschrieben".

Böhmen bzw. Mähren, wohl Mitte des 17. Jh... circa 31 x 21 cm. 119 num., 8 unnum. Blatt Halb-Pergament d. Zt..

Historiarum sui Temporis Partis Primae Libri VI

Ambrosium & Hieronymum Drouart, 1604. Second Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Very Good Condition. 5 volumes bound in 9 in contemporary calf. Worn at the edges and corners, spines a little dry, but intact and attractive overall. Volume 1 with a single title page (some copies were apparently bound with a second title page noting Estienne, the publisher of the Folio edition). Old bookplates inside covers, ownership marks and stamps to titles and first pages, occasionally trimmed a little close on the top edge, just touching the running title, scattered minor pencil marks, light dampstain to the corners of a section of vol vii, but otherwise clean and a very good set overall. This is the second edition of Thou's history, published 1604-1608, and the first octavo edition. It was published just after the Folio edition, a few months after for the first volumes, and almost simultaneously thereafter. The first two octavo volumes (corresponding to the first folio volume and printed in 1604, identified here as Pars I and Partis Primae Tomus II) is bound in four volumes, as is the second volume, published in two octavo volumes in 1606 and corresponding to the Folio volume also published in 1606. They are identified as Tomus Secundi Pars Prima and Tomi Secundi Pars altera. The final volume, identified as Libri VI, is bound in one and published in 1608 (the Folio edition was published in 1607-8). Because Thou was editing and changing his systems of identification as he published the books, the naming system is a little odd - this final volume follows the third and fourth octavo volumes, and not the first two in how it is numbered. 1005pp, index; 1013, index; 958, index; 886, index; 501, privilege, index. Kinser pages 10-20. Graesse VII 147. Thou's history is one of the great monuments of Renaissance history and in its scientific, factual take on events, was much more a work of the enlightenment than the counter-reformation. As a result, and despite some minor changes from the first edition, all of the later books (dealing with the wars of religion and other topics) ended up on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum in 1609. A 1620 edition collected all of the history and added Thou's Mémoires. Size: Octavo (8vo). 9-volume set (complete). Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Over 3 kilos.       . Nunc vero ordine meliore & triplici Indice, in lucem productus a Iosepho Stubendorfio. - Lipsiae, Michael Lantzenberger, 1604, 8°, 321, (11) pp., feiner Halbpergamenteinband im Stil der Zeit; feines Exemplar.. Sehr selten!

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A Chronicle of the Carmelites in Persia: The Safavids and the Papal Mission of the 17th and 18th Centuries

Hardcover. New. Hardcover. In 1604, Pope Clement VIII despatched a delegation of Discalced Carmelites to Persia to exhort Shah Abbas I to join an alliance with him. Thus began almost two hundred years of Carmelite activity in the region. During their time there, the Order not only bore witness to the great Safavid dynasty and its demise: they also amassed a huge written record. Herbert Chicks two impressive volumes present an important collection of these writings. The records provide an unparalleled source of detailed information on the politics, diplomatic rituals, foreign policy concerns, and matters of court ceremony of the time, including correspondence between the Popes and the Shahs. Now extremely rare, the work remains an invaluable resource for scholars. This new edition contains an introduction by Rudi Matthee, an acknowledged authority on Safavid Persia. This item ships from multiple locations. Your book may arrive from Roseburg,OR, La Vergne,TN, Momence,IL, Commerce,GA.

The annales of Cornelius Tacitus. The description of St. Germanie. (bound with) The end of Nero and beginning of Galba.

      J. Norton 1604 (1605), London - Two works in one. Folio. [vi], 271; [vi], 12, 227, [1] pp. Historiated woodcut chapter initials and a full page engraving in the second work. Contemporary calf, re-backed and re-cornered, with portions of the original spine laid down; some minor marginal dampstains and light soiling, but generally an excellent copy with contemporary inscriptions to title. From the library of Charles Tyler Prouty, with his bookplate as well as the armorial bookplate of Thomas Merriman. Third edition in English of both books, the first part of the Annales translated by Richard Greenway, and the second on the End of Nero and Life of Agricola by Henry Savile, which was dedicated to the Queen. The Annales was Tacitus' final work, covering the period from the death of Augustus Caesar in the year 14, and the reigns of the four succeeding Roman emperors, Tiberius, Caligula and Claudius. The remaining parts treat the reign of Nero to connect with the Histories. Germania is an ethnographic study of Central Europe in which Tacitus compares the decadence of Rome with the virility of the barbarians. The Histories treat the period from Nero's death in A.D. 68 to A.D. 96. Tacitus' Agricola, written in about A.D. 98, is described as "semi-biographical, moral eulogy of a personage" - - in this case, his father-in-law, with history and a description of Britain.Tacitus comes from the Greco-Roman tradition of writers of history whose purpose is as much to promote a moral agenda using rhetorical flourishes as it is to record facts. Little is known for certain about the origins of Tacitus, although he is believed to have been born around A.D. 56, in Gaul (modern France) or nearby, in the Roman province of Transalpine Gaul, into a provincial aristocratic family. He had a successful political course, becoming senator, consul, and eventually governor of the Roman province of Asia. He chronicles the moral decline and rampant civil unrest in the Roman Empire in a period when the earliest foundations of modern Europe were being laid. According to historian Will Durant, "we must rank Tacitus among the greatest . . . the portraits he draws stand out more clearly, stride the stage more livingly than any others in historical literature."

The Naturall and Morall Historie of the East and West Indies

LONDON : Printed by Val:Sims for Edward Blount and William Aspley , 1604 First english translation of this important work, first published in Spain in 1588 and in enlarged version 1590. This is copy is in a contemporary vellum binding. Acosta drew on 17 years experience as a Jesuit missionary to give a detailed account of the new world. His writing impressed Francis Bacon and he cited the work in New Organon and History of Winds. Classed as fair because pages 17-32 and 79-96 were removed and have been replaced with fascimile copies provided by the British Library. The vellum binding is sound with blind tooled borders. It has some grubbiness as might be expected. Internally the first blank leaf has been replaced and the title page has been repaired to replace loss at the bottom corner. There is some browning and an ink sign and an inscription 'London, July 21 1728'. From the ink colour it looks as if this signatory has added a tail to the zero in 1604 to change the date to 1694. Pages 17-32 and 79-96 are in facsimile. There are some small repaired paper tears, small loss to the bottom inner corner of p65 not affecting text, and some ink lines in the margin of pp62-63. There is substantial ink, pencil and some biro marking on the final blank leaf. Pages have very light brown toning and the occasional mark. Otherwise the text with decorative initial capitals and head and tailpieces is in good clean condition. Size 19 cm x 14.5 cm. An opportunity to buy this rare and significant work at a reduced price. Please enquire if you would like to see more images of this work.

Historiarum sui Temporis. Partis Primae.Libri VI

Ambrosium & Hieronymum Drouart - 5 volumes bound in 9 in contemporary calf. Graesse VII 147.Thou's history is one of the great monuments of Renaissance history and in its scientific, factual take on events, was much more a work of the enlightenment than the counter-reformation. Inventory No: 045016. Rara prima edizione.cod. V
