MACHIAVELLI.) GENTILLET, Innocent.
London: printed by Adam Islip, 1602. Folio (269 x 182 mm). Contemporary calf, skilfully rebacked to style, red morocco spine label, single gilt rules, blind centrepieces to boards, relined, green sprinkled edges. Extremities lightly rubbed, a few chips and marks to boards, hinges gently cracked but very firm, some infrequent damp-staining to upper margins and a small tear to lower margin of leaf G5, otherwise a very good copy. Bound without initial and final blanks, with two final leaves bearing "A table of the Maximes". Early inscription to title page. First edition in English of the work popularly known as Antimachiavel, a translation of Discours sur les moyens de bien gouverner et maintenir en bonne paix un royaume ou autre principauté (1576). Despite being widely discussed in Elizabethan and Jacobean England, Machiavelli's Il principe was not published in a complete English translation until 1640, a remarkable delay partly explained by the existence of Patericke's translation which cited enough of Machiavelli's original to serve as a substitute for it. STC 11743. [Attributes: First Edition]

Ryff, W. H. and N. Ager
Strassburg [Strasbourg], L. Zetzner, 1602. Folio (31.9 x 21.0 cm). [vi (of 12)]; 1-721, [xxiv (indexes)], [ii (blank)], 1-303, [viii]. With over 200 large, hand-coloured wood engravings in the text. Contemporary full embossed calf. Spine with five raised bands, blind embossed floral patterns, gilt title and date. Brass clasps and hasps. = A copy - in fine, accurate, contemporary colouring - of one of the rarest and least-known German "Kräuterbücher". The basis of this work was laid by the German polymath Walther Hermann Ryff (ca. 1500-pre 1562), and this first subsequent edition was greatly expanded and updated by the German medical doctor Nikolaus Ager, or Acker (1568-1634). "Ager studied medicine in Basel and became a medical doctor in Strasbourg, where he worked as a canon at St. Thomas Church . As a professor of medicine and botany (1618), he described some new plants" (deutsche-bibliographie.de) Nissen BBI (1707) mentions only an earlier, much smaller Ryff edition (1573; 422 pp.). OCLC records 21 copies worldwide, but none seem to be hand-coloured. The first and largest part contains the description of many plants and discusses their medical use. The second part is a systematic arrangement of plant parts, such as leaves, berries, fruits, etc., which are collected in "grades". It also includes descriptions of newly discovered exotic plants, including coffee and tobacco. The third part deals with pills; their names, contents, and manufacturing processes. The pagination of the third part starts anew. As usual, some defects due to age and use: Lacking the title page and pr … [Click Below for Full Description]

William Lilly (11 May [O.S. 1 May] 1602 9 June 1681) has been described as "the most abused as well as the most celebrated astrologer of the seventeenth century". Seven years later he secured his fortune by marrying his former master's widow, allowing him the leisure to study astrology. In 1644, during the English Civil War, he published the first of many popular astrological texts, and in 1647 he published Christian Astrology, a huge compendium of astrological technique. This was the first of its kind to be printed in the English language rather than Latin, and is said to have tutored "a nation in crisis in the language of the stars". By 1659, Lilly's fame was widely acknowledged and his annual almanac was achieving sales of around 30,000 copies a year. Londini: Thomas Wight, 1602 A rare printing of the Magna Carta in contemporary vellum binding - pp 1-158 only present (a full copy would have 259pp) which takes the book up to part of the section on Monasteries. This printing is the first 17th century printing of Magna Carta. It is unclear why only part was bound, but it is in a contemporary binding of vellum over card - so possibly a temporary binding. Some pages from what look like a prayer used as endpapers. The binding is grubby but complete. The title page has had repair to replace loss. The contents with their decorative initial capitals are in good condition - with early annotation in ink to some margins. The pages have brown toning.

Giovanni Antonio MAGINI

-Italy according to Magini: a cartographical model for posterity- This map derives from the one included in the neapolitan atlas made by Mario Cartaro, a cartographer from Viterbo. Slightly spoiled at margins, overall in very good conditions. Giovanni Antonio Magini was born in Padua in 1555, dedicating himself to the study of astronomy from an early age. In 1588 the Senate of Bologna appointed him Lecturer of Astronomy at the local university, choosing him instead of Galileo Galilei. His friendship with the Duke of Mantua, Vincenzo Gonzaga, helped Magini in his quest to obtain cartographical material for map-making from the various sovereigns ruling the different italian states at that time. Because of Magini's early death in 1617 this effort was made known by his son Fabio when he published the atlas "L'Italia" in Bologna in 1620. This is the first example of an italian atlas and is made up of 24 pages of descriptive text and 61 maps of the italian peninsula. Although this work was published posthumously, it can be entirely ascribed to Magini. He began drawing this maps around 1594, with the one depicting Bologna and its surrounding territories being the first. They were all printed before 1620 in draft editions which were then revised and updated for the final version. These draft proofs are extremely rare, although sometimes available for sale, … [Click Below for Full Description]
