1601. Condition: Very Good. Very nice impression with Martin Bockler, homilies for Sundays, by Pierre Canisius, Jesuit, and translated by Joachim Landolt for the first time in German. So here we are in the presence of an important work, indeed it is the first translation into German and therefore the opening to a larger number of Canisius homilies. For a complete notice, read the article by Peter Johannes Weber: Die Christliche catholische Postill aus der Freiburger Jesuitenbibliothek. As well as: The Primacy of the Postils: Catholics, Protestants, and the Dissemination of ideas in early modern Germany by John M. Frymire who underlines the importance of the Postils of Canisius. Our copy is kept in a very beautiful vintage sow hide binding on wooden board, dishes covered with a large plate decorated with stylized Fleurs and characters in medallions. Clasps in very good condition. The binding has a beautiful patina giving an undeniable charm to the work. 11 non-paginated sheets, then 327 numbered sheets and an unencrypted sheet for the colophon. NOVELLA, Cosme.
[25] ll.Very rare first and only edition of a "memorial" addressed to the king, Philip III of Spain. Cosme Novella was initially denied permission to practice the profession of pharmacist in the apothecary of his father-in-law who had recently passed away. During the inspections by the "Colegio de Boticarios" (College of apothecaries) they had found deficiencies in the operation of the apothecary, but Novella was finally admitted after intervention of a municipal jury. In 1601 he was appointed as inspector to the pharmacy of the Hospital Real y General, where he found serious deficiencies in their preparations of medicines. This angered the management of the hospital, who held a high position in the College of apothecaries. The College restarted their inspections of Novella's business and closed his store. The dispute then grew to a bigger scale, involving the royal chapter of pharmacists and physicians. In the present "memorial" Novella presents his case to the King. The royal sentence would in the end be in favour of Novella and his apothecary would eventually be reopened again. With manuscript note on title-page. Some faint waterstains, two tiny tears in the fore-edge margins and the paste-downs detached from the boards, separating the bookblock from its binding. A good copy.l Bibliographia medica Hispanica 537; Iberian books 41802; Palau 194700; Vicente Martínez Tejero, “Cosme Novella” in: Diccionario biográfico español (online); WorldCat (3 copies); not in Krivatsy; Osler; Wellcome.

PLINIUS Secundus, Gaius (Pliny the Elder)
(58), 614, (42) pp. (12), 632, (86) pp.Pliny's renowned Natural History in its second publication in English (repeating, with corrections, the 1601 first publication), translated by Philemon Holland, the greatest translator of the Elizabethan age. The "Naturalis Historia" is one of the largest single works to have survived from the Roman empire to the modern day and purports to cover the entire field of ancient knowledge, based on the best authorities available to the author. Pliny claims to be the only Roman ever to have undertaken such a work. It comprised 37 books in 10 volumes and covered over 20,000 facts on topics including the fields of botany, zoology, astronomy , geology and mineralogy as well as the exploitation of those resources. It remains a standard work for the Roman period and the advances in technology and understanding of natural phenomena at the time. Some technical advances he discusses are the only sources for those inventions, such as hushing in mining technology or the use of water mills for crushing or grinding corn. Much of what he wrote about has been confirmed by archaeology. ''We know from Pliny that there were important pearl fisheries in the Gulf [...] Pliny identifies Tylos (Bahrain) as a place famous for its pearls [... He] attests that pearls were the most highly rated valuable in Roman society, and that those from the Gulf were specially praised [...] The pearl related finds at the site of El-Dur indicate the site was integrated into the maritime trade routes linking the Roman Empire, the Persian Empire, India and South Arabia'' (Carter). KIRCHER, Athanasius.
[12], 286, [10] pp.First and only edition of Glazemaker's Dutch translation of China illustrata, "one of the most influential books in shaping the European conception of China in its Day" (Löwendahl), by the great Jesuit scientist Athanasius Kircher (1601/02-1680). The work is divided into six parts, the first on the inscriptions of the famous Nestorian monument (early Chinese Christian inscriptions, in Chinese and Syriac lettering), the second part gives a history of China and early Christianity, the third on idolatry in Chinese and other Asian cultures, including Indian and Japanese, the fourth describes China's government, its cities and its nature, the fifth details China's architectural and mechanical marvels and in the sixth Kircher returns to the Chinese language and the origins of its characters. Including the engraved author's portrait, often lacking. The first and last few leaves a bit frayed at the edges, some spots and a few plates and leaves slightly browned, otherwise in good condition. The binding recased and with some restorations, rubbed along the edges and three of the compartments of the spine somewhat loose. A fascinating and well-illustrated account of China, mixing fact and fiction, but bringing both to a newly eager and curious public.l Cordier, Sinica, col. 26; Löwendahl 136 (cf. 132); cf. PASIO, Francesco.
77, [1 blank] pp.First edition, in the original Italian, of the annual report and letter on the events that had taken place in Japan during the year 1601, especially regarding the Jesuit mission there. Father Francesco Pasio (1551-1612) in Nagasaki sent the letter to Claudio Acquaviva (1543-1615) in Rome, Superior General of the Jesuit Society. Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-1598) had succeeded in unifying Japan by 1590 and dreamt of conquering China as well, but his death in 1598 threw Japan into chaos and civil war. Pasio's report paints a bleak picture of these circumstances, with special emphasis on the hardships of Japanese Christians. The Christian daimyos had generally opposed Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616), and the letter describes in detail how he persecuted them after he defeated his rivals at battle of Sekigahara, 21 October 1600. Pasio feared the mission would not survive, but to the Jesuits' relief Ieyasu managed to restore order, leading to the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1603, and the Jesuits found him friendlier than expected, though he also largely closed Japan to foreigners. With an early owner's inscription on the title-page. With faint stains in the last few leaves, a small hole in the last two and occasional foxing, but still in good condition.l Alt Japan Kat. 1121 (4 copies); Cordier, Japonica, col. 241; De Backer & Sommervogel VI, col. 328, no. 5 (cf. II, col. 422); Lach & Van Kley III, pp. 368-370, 1828-1829, 1838-1839; USTC 4035538 (6 copies).

Prijs: Euro2.850,- (incl. lijst) ?.

Horst's translation was first published in 1572, the original was first published in 1559. Levin Lemnius (or Lemne or Lemmens) from Zierkzee in Holland was a famous physician and author who had studied under Vesalius. His book on the secrets of nature was a great success and was published in many editions and translated into several languages. Ferguson writes: "It is a most heterogeneous collection, heterogeneously piled together, of notions on physiological, physical, medical, religious, and moral topics, with attempts to explain phenomena in nature which subsequent enquiry has shown do not exist at all. The collection is a very curious one, notwithstanding, and furnishes good instances of popular ideas about n … [Click Below for Full Description]

Maerbled endpapers, Title-page with full-engraved border followed by square enbgraved portrait of jeweler Gorlaeus with rings on bench and text below, followed by 16 sheets of text, (1), pp. 2-16,(2 sheets printed), followed by 138 sheets illustrating 196 rings (mostly 2-to-a-page) and 148 other symbols (4-to-a-page). Text is entirely in Latin. A stunning book on rsignet ings and ring designs and symbols, apparently drawn from the collection of Abraham Van Goorle. Showing two perspectives of each ring, several of the rings have rotating platforms so that one of two motiffs might be selected, and they are illustrated one-to-a-page. A later (possibly) printing of this edition shows the same number of rings (196) but a higher number of the other symbols (196). No evidence of withdrawl of plates from this volume. Overall VG, some soiling, smudging, two areas of ink writing from the 16th century, some light to moderate dampstaining on the following plate sheets at the lower right corners: 58-61, 72-85, 92-100, 109-138 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[GLOBE - TERRESTRIAL]. HONDIUS, Jodocus.
[Terrestrial globe].Antwerp, Joan Baptist Vrients [produced by Jodocus Hondius in Amsterdam], "1601" [= ca. 1603?]. Diameter (21 cm). The globe is assembled from 12 engraved gores, mounted over a hollow wooden sphere, the gores hand-coloured in outline, some areas with full colour infill. A highly important and rare Hondius globe, the dedication copy presented to Archduke Albert and Archduchess Isabella of Austria, one of three copies with this very special dedication: "Serenissimis Principibus Alberto et Isabellae ... . The globe was first published in Amsterdam by Hondius (1563-1612) in 1601, with a Latin dedication to the "most famous and skilful commanders .... of the United Provinces of the Netherlands", the young Dutch Republic that controlled the Northern provinces of the Low Countries. Since the Republic was at war with the Spanish forces that controlled the Southern provinces, Hondius probably thought the dedication and his own association with the Republic could hinder sales of the globe in the Southern Netherlands, hence the new dedication to Albert and Isabella signed by Hondius only as author of the globe and Vrients apparently as publisher. This may have given him an advantage over his great rival Willem Jansz Blaeu. Denucé notes that Moretus in Antwerp bought Hondius globes from Vrients and that Albert and Isabella bought a terrestrial globe (along with a celestial globe and other items) from Vrients in 1603, so the globe in its present state may date from around that time, even though it retains the original date "1601" (it does show some revisions to the to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Commines, Philip de [Translated by Thomas Danett
Ar. Hatfield for I. Norton, 1601. Second Edition in English. Leather_bound (Vellum). Folio. 364 pages. Bound in contemporary vellum, with 12 sewn loops also of vellum. Manuscript title to spine. Fabulous title page with coat of arms at top and large beehive device to bottom. Elaborate historiated capital letters. One major difference in this second English edition and the first (1596) is the presence, in this edition, of printed marginal notes throughout the text. Divided into eight books, with 17 pp. of genealogical tables at the rear. Very occasional instances of ink underlining of a word. Apart from the titlepage which is a bit soiled, the majority of text is clean, bright, and the entire volume, still quite strongly bound. Very Good. Philippe de Commines [1447-1511] was brought up in the Burgundian Court under Charles the Bold, serving him as a diplomat and soldier, then as a diplomat to Louis XI. His memoirs are a major source for the 15th Century (history). Commines has been called "the first critical and philosophical historian since classical times" (Oxford Companion to English Literature). Marinella [also Marinelli], Lucrezia (1571-1653)
Venice: Appresso Gio. Battista Ciotti sanese, all'insegna dell'Aurora, 1601. SECOND EDITION, REVISED AND EXPANDED. Quarto: A fine copy in contemporary parchment over boards, citron label tooled in gold on spine. Contents clean aside from 4 lvs. (G3-6) lightly browned and with early repair to short worm track, obscuring part of two-lines of text. Printer's device on title page. The second edition includes 14 new chapters, 4 refutations of the misogynistic views of prominent men (Ercole Tasso, Sperone Speroni, Torquato Tasso, and Boccaccio on the subject of women; and 10 on the vices of men (adulterers, men who murder their families, etc.) Lucrezia Marinella, born in Venice, was the daughter of the famous writer and physician Giovanni Marinella, who encouraged her to study poetry, music and philosophy. She became the most versatile, prolific, and learned woman writer of her generation. Lucrezia was a ferocious polemicist and wrote lyric, narrative and epic poems, mainly published by Ciotti, alternating secular and sacred, prose and verse in her production. She was related to the Accademia Veneziana, of which Ciotti was the official typographer, but led a reclusive life of private study. Nevertheless, she married a physician and had two children. Her fame as one of the very first feminist writers ever is mostly due to the treatise 'La nobiltà et l'eccellenza delle donne, co' difetti et mancamenti de gli uomini' ('The nobility and excellence of women and the defects and vices of Men', Venice, 1600), [revised and expanded in 1601.] She died in Venice in 1653."'La nobiltà et l'e … [Click Below for Full Description]

Commines, Philip de [Translated by Thomas Danett]
London: Ar. Hatfield for I. Norton, 1601. Second Edition in English. Leather_bound (Vellum). Very Good. Folio. Neither a chronicler nor a historian in the usual sense of the word, his analyses of the contemporary political scene are what made him virtually unique in his own time. [Wikepedia].

A very curious work much sought after on account of the singular doctrines and secrets of science contained within; this is a scarce combined edition of Albertus Magnus and Michael Scot's works. Both deal with various parts of natural philosophy, medical issues, women's obstetrics and health, astrology, physiology, and occult science. The first work is by (some maybe not so accurately) Albertus Magnus O.P., (1206-1280), also known as Saint Albert the Great. Magnus was a German Dominican friar and served as Bishop of Ratisbon. He was known for his knowledge in many fields - astronomy, mineralogy, astrology, obstetrics, medicine, zoology, and botany. He was also interested in the transmutation of metals, which was the chief object of alchemy. Papier fortement bruni. Italian Language. From the Military Library by the Lord Cottesloe. [Click Below for Full Description]

Teixeira, José / Munday, Anthony (transl.).
London, Frances Henson, 1601. 8vo. 90 pp. (without the final blank leaf). Small woodcut device on title, woodcut decorations and initials. Fine 19th century mottled calf by Lloyd, with gilt arms of Sebastião Pinto Leite, Conde de Penha Longa (motto "Superabo") to both covers, gilt fillets and faux raised bands to spine, compartments tooled in gilt, two red lettering pieces. Leading edges gilt; inner dentelle gilt. Marbled endpapers. First English edition of this rare work, containing an account of the failed invasion led by the young king of Portugal, Dom Sebastian, to the north of Africa, his defeat and death, and the political unrest that ensued. - Sebastian, the 24 year-old King of Portugal, invaded Morocco in 1578 with an army of 18,000 men. The army was crushed by the forces of Marwan Abd al-Malik I Saadi at the battle of Alcacer Quibir and King Sebastian was killed. The fact that he had left no successor paved the way for a series of impostors claiming the throne, only to be captured and executed (ultimately, the Spanish king would accede to the throne of Portugal). Teixeira's work narrates the machinations of the fourth such impostor, a Calabrian by the name of Marco Tullio. - Rare at auction, the last copy being sold in 1991. - Bound for the Portuguese politician and entrepreneur Sebastião Pinto Leite (1815-92), Conde de Penha Longa. Bookplate of the Fox Pointe Collection Library of Dr. & Mrs. Howard R. Knohl to pastedown. Joints of the fine binding slightly rubbed. Lightly browned throughout; title-page and verso of final leaf lightly dustsoiled. Overall in excelle … [Click Below for Full Description]

Spontone, Ciro
presso Vittorio Benacci, In Bologna, 1601. Illustrated with two double-page engraved plates. Enriched with two recurring large woodcuts and woodcut and typographical head and tailpieces. First edition. In contemporary vellum. Coll: [?]4; A-H4 ; [ 8], 64 p., and [2] engraved plates. One of the earliest reports of the decisive Battle of Alcácer Quibir in 1578, which, by the death of Sebastian I, led to the end of the Aviz Dynasty of Portugal and the establishment of the Iberian Union. One of Ciro Spontone's (1554 or 1556-1610) scarcest books, published in 1601, a year after his expedition to Hungary by the side of Vincenzo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua, on his crusade against the Turks.Raguaglio fedelediscusses the political and military aspects of the Battle of Alcácer Quibir, and is supplemented with astronomical assumptions. The detailed discussion of the battle is illustrated with two double-page engravings, representing accurately the positions of the armies and a later stage of the battle. The Battle of Alcácer Quibir was the major battle of the ongoing Moroccan-Portuguese conflicts, and the Moroccan succession struggle, fought at Ksar-el-Kebir on 4 August 1578. The fight is also known as the Battle of Three Kings, as three rulers led the combatants and died during the conflict, on one side Sebastian, King of Portugal with his ally, the deposed Moroccan Sultan Abu Abdallah Mohammed II, on the other, the new Sultan of Morocco (and uncle of Abu Abdallah) Abu Marwan Abd al-Malik I. The four-hour battle resulted in the total defeat of the Portuguese and Abu Abdallah's army, Sebas … [Click Below for Full Description]

Neither a chronicler nor a historian in the usual sense of the word, his analyses of the contemporary political scene are what made him virtually unique in his own time. [Wikepedia].
