Jan David
1601. I am honored and excited to be able to offer this incredibly rare copy of Jan David's "Veridicus Christianus" published in 1601 which includes over 100 original woodcut illustrations. This 1st edition illustrated copy was originally written in 1599 but lacked any of the outstanding prints as this copy shows. Printed over 400 years ago this book is historically important as it is one of the earliest books on Biblical doctrine and education predating even the King James Version of the Bible which was first printed in 1611. Each original woodcut illustration has a description of the scene below written in three different languages; Latin, French and German respectively making it a trilingual print apparently which rhyme when read. What makes this book so phenomenal is the sheer amount of original Renaissance prints depicting the brutal and terrifying Biblical imagery often seen during this period. Many of the fine prints depict satan, demons, skeletons, serpents, sea monsters, horned beasts, dogs, dragons and more. In addition to these terrifying Biblical characters we see many portrayals of famous characters like Adam & Eve, Christ, God the Father and angels just to name a few. The original artwork that this book contains truly are stunning beyond words can express especially when taking into account the level of detail and quality of execution. I have attempted to show you every illustration this book contains with maybe the exception of less than 10 that I was unable to combine while editing the provided collages. Given the age of the book and the fact it has been wel … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giovanni MAGGI (1566-1618)
"Suite di 8 incisioni all'acquaforte, 1601, firmate e datate in lastra in basso.
Engraving, 1601, signed and dated on plate, at the end of the dedication to Ciriaco Mattei: "Francesco Villamena 1601". Later edition by Carlo Losi. According to Michael Bury in 2001, the composition was designed and engraved by Villamena, and dedicated by him to the great patron of the arts Ciriaco Mattei (1542-1614), whose villa appears in the background. … [Click Below for Full Description]

The first book on sports medicine. "Mercuriale, professor of medicine at Bologna and Pisa, is probably best known to modern students of medical history for the present work, first published in 1569. It was the first complete text on gymnastics and stresses the importance that all forms of exercise have in maintaining good health. Relying heavily on ancient practices, this work is an excellent compendium of the physical therapy of earlier times" (Heirs of Hippocrates) "The illustrations which accompanied the second edition of the work (1573) proved incredibly fertile to the Western imagination regarding the nature of athletics in the Classical world. Raleigh, Walter
1601. Nuremberg. Hulsius. 8vo, (181 x 147 mm). 2 [blank], 2 ff., 17 pp., 1 ff., folding map and 6 plates, 3 [blank]. Contemporary vellum, slightly soiled, but an entirely genuine example, likely in its first binding -normally not the case. Plates show outer margin wear as often, as they were larger than the rest of the book, people often opted for cropping them, or fold them inside, some spotting but overall fine.- Second German edition, describing the voyage of Raleigh to South America in 1595, sought after for the map that illustrates it and the attractive plates. The expedition left England in 1595 towards the Orinoco River, in search of El Dorado, legendary city made of gold, hidden according to tradition in the jungle. Although obviously of unsuccessful in the finding of El Dorado, the expeditionaries explored the Orinoco. Upon his return to England, Raleigh published his account of the voyage “The discovery of the large, rich and beautiful Empire of Guiana” (1596), a German translation appeared later in 1599, Hulsius’ was the first to be illustrated. The map shows the northern part of South America and the Antilles; the plates are very creative, and of little iconographical value, except for understanding European imagination and understanding of the Americas, amongst them, a person with his head in the chest, the Amazons, etc. “In this workRaleighgives an account of his second voyage (1595) and seems to confirm the marvellous tales concerning the Spanish city of El Dorado, which he calls by the Indian name “Manoa.” Ca … [Click Below for Full Description]

David Thurston
Massachusetts: 1601. See listing. As my family historian, I enjoy digging deep, because the past is always present! I personally descend from a long line of Thurston's back to Immigrant John Thurston (1601-1685). After extensive research I determined this David Thurston was not in our direct line, so I am parting with it. David Thurston's (1784-1811) handwritten manuscript of "Practical Arithmetic" a practice book in original binding in overall very good condition. David Thurston was a son of Abijah Thurston (1751-1812) and Rachel Johnson (1754-1826) and lived in Franklin Massachusetts. David married Miranda Ellis Pond (1786-1870) On September 5, 1809. His father Abijah as son of Deacon Daniel Thurston and Elizabeth Whitng, Abijah was a noted tavern keeper in Franklin Mass and a farmer. David died on July 25, 1811 as a very young father at the age of 27, leaving behind an infant daughter Nancy (born Jan 1811). He was laid to rest in Union Street Cemetery in Franklin. Nancy eventually married in 1832 to Stephen Metcalf and had several children. If you search "find a grave" you'll notice I always leave a "forget me not" as Bertina Thurston's granddaughter. David Thurston's mother was a daughter of Isaac Johnson (1714-1754) and Susannah Thayer (1716-1762). Interesting to note I do share the common immigrant of John Thurston (1601-1685), but my line descends from son Daniel (1646-1683 of Dedham Mass) where this David descended from another brother; Thomas. Thurston (1633-1704). Our common ancestor John Thurston came to America to Medfield Massachusetts on the ship Mary Anne in … [Click Below for Full Description]

BUONSIGNORI STEFANO-ORTELIUS ABRAHAM
Anversa, 1601. Incisione in rame, colorata, mm 335x469.

London: 1601. Please read description & Review all photos. A Harmony Upon The Three Evangelistes Matthewe, Marke and Luke w/ The Commentarie of M. John Calvine: Faithfully Translated Out Of Latine Into English. by E. P. Printed in London 1610 John Calvin (July 1509 - 27 May 1564) a French theologian, pastor and reformer in Geneva during the Protestant Reformation. He was a principal figure in the development of the system of Christian theology later called Calvinism, aspects of which include the doctrines of predestination and of the absolute sovereignty of God in salvation of the human soul from death and eternal damnation, in which doctrines Calvin was influenced by and elaborated upon the Augustinian and other Christian traditions. Various Congregational, Reformed and Presbyterian churches, which look to Calvin as the chief expositor of their beliefs, have spread throughout the world. Calvin's authority was practically uncontested during his final years, and he enjoyed an international reputation as a reformer distinct from Martin Luther.[74] Initially, Luther and Calvin had mutual respect for each other. A doctrinal conflict had developed between Luther and Zurich reformer Huldrych Zwingli on the interpretation of the eucharist. Calvin's opinion on the issue forced Luther to place him in Zwingli's camp. Measures: 7 1/2 X 6 X 2 1/4 Thick Features: Original General Title Page w/ Beautiful Woodcut Border. Pliny the Elder (trans. Philemon Holland)
London: Printed by Adam Islip, 1601. First English language edition. Two folio volumes bound in one, measuring 228 x 355mm. Collates [60], 614, [54]; 632, [88] pages: complete. Bound in 19th century polished calf and recently rebacked to style, red morocco spine labels. All edges stained red. Bookplates of Bryan Faufsett and Marcus Crahan on front pastedown and inserted slip from early owner Jacob Winsor (dated 1656) between pages 234-35 of volume 2. Winsor's marginal notes throughout both volumes, confined to the text's wide margins. Occasional marginal dampstaining not affecting text, but in all an exceptionally pleasing, clean copy of this important work. The only extant text of the seven titles authored by Pliny, the History was considered the leading authority on natural sciences up to the Middle Ages. "The Natural History of Pliny the Elder is more than a natural history: it is an encyclopaedia of all the knowledge of the ancient world. It comprises 37 books with mathematics and physics, geography and astronomy, medicine and zoology, anthropology and physiology, philosophy and history...Over and over again it will be found that the source of some ancient piece of knowledge is Pliny" (PMM 5). This first appearance in English of Pliny's work expanded the book's sphere of influence, allowing not only the Latin literate to access its contents but vernacular readers as well. While advancements in Renaissance scientific study led most scholars by this time to reject the tome's claims on natural history, Pliny remained an enduring reference for mythology and history for writ … [Click Below for Full Description]

MORIGI, Paolo.
Bergame, Comin Ventura, 1601. In 8 de 4 ff. Absolutely gorgeous edition of the rare Confutation of the Rhemes New Testament. 2nd Edition Printed by Robert Barker Printer to the Queens Most Excellent Majestie Anno 1601. The New Testament portion was published in Reims, France, in 1582, The Old Testament portion was published in twenty-seven years later in 1609 and 1610 by the University of Douai. The purpose of the version, was to uphold Catholic tradition in the face of the Protestant Reformation which up till then had dominated Elizabethan religion. In 1589, William Fulke collated the complete Rheims text and notes in parallel columns with those of the Bishops' Bible. This work sold widely in England, being re-issued in three further editions to 1633. It was predominantly through Fulke's editions that the Rheims New Testament came to have a significant influence on the development of 17th century England (This is a 1601 2nd Edition of this very book.) Measures: 13 1/2 X 8 3/4 X 3 1/2 Features: Original General Title Page w/ Beautiful Woodcut Border. Condition: Very Nice Copy, 100% Original!! William Fulke
London: Robert Barker, 1601. The major feature of this book is that it is clean and complete. It is in a period binding, probably the original. The spine of the book is roughed up, lacking pieces of leather at top and bottom. The binding is mostly tight, but the uppermost binding cord has broken, given the book some looseness in certain sections. William Fulke was an Anglican clergyman who undertook the task of refuting the comments made in the notes of the Catholic New Testament printed at Rheims in 1582. His method was to print a parallel version of the Rheims and Bishops' text. He then printed all the notes from the Rheims version with his own comments and refutations. One consequence of this book was that the Rheims New Testament became more available in England than it might otherwise have been; and King James' revisers were influenced by the Rheims New Testament. Bishop, 1601. ____________________ Description: Londini: Impensis Geor. Bishop, 1601, FIRST EDITION, printed in black letter, several short old ink and pencil notes to the margins. Signature of a Mr Appleton to the top of the title page. pp. [viii], 547, [1], 4to., modern calf. The most important work of Francis Godwin (1562-1633), the historian and bishop. Godwin knew and worked with William Camden, and produced his own antiquarian works in the same vein as Camden and Matthew Parker. This book attempts to compile biographies, however brief, of every bishop and archbishop ever appointed in England. 'Godwin is notably even-handed, for instance, in describing St Thomas a Becket's troubles with Henry II.[it] was unevenly researched even by the standards of the day, but it wore well over the next two centuries as a basic reference source' (ODNB). It was so well-received it resulted in Godwin's appointment as bishop of Llangollen, and fifteen years after this publication, the translation into Latin of the second edition earned hi … [Click Below for Full Description]

The Authorized Version is distinguished from previous English Protestant versions by a greater tendency to employ Latinate vocabulary, and the translators were able to find many such terms (for example: emulation Romans 11:14) in the Rheims New Testament. Consequently, a number of the latinisms of the Douay-Rheims, through their use in the King James Bible, have entered standard literary English. The second … [Click Below for Full Description]
