VALERIANO (Piero) [Joannis Pierii Valeriani Bellunensis]:
Lugduni [Lyon], Sumptibus Pauli Frelon, 1602. Folio (in 6s), 377 x 232 mms., pp. [xvi], 644, [4], 47 [48 translation, 49 printer's imprint, 50 - 54 blank], title-page in red and blank, engraved portrait of author on verso of last leaf before text, numerous woodcuts throughout the text, man partially inked over/ out (?vandalism, amateur shading, prudery), contemporary vellum (soiled and darkened); no blanks or front free end-papers before title-page, some upper and lower margins of text water-stained not affecting text, rear end-leaves creased, top of spine defective, upper margin of rear cover defective. Piero Valeriano Bolzani (1477–1558), also known as Giampietro Valeriano Bolzani, was a notable Renaissance humanist and a favourite of the Medici. The above work was first published in 1556 at Basel and reprinted frequently thereafter. Cristoforo Buondelmonti, an Italian geographer and monk from Florence, visited many of the Greek islands between 1414 and 1430. In 1422, during one of his returns to his home, Buondelmonti brought back the only known manuscript copy of Horapollo's Hieroglyphica, a compendium of interpretations of hieroglyphs; it was published by Aldo Manuzio in 1505. Valeriano's Hieroglyphica was in many ways a continuation of his writings of his tutor, Giorgio Valla, and it does include the original text of Horapollo translated into Latin. However, Valeriano combined the knowledge gained by Horapollo and his studies (based on over 400 other Greek and Latin sources) and produced the first Renaissance dictionary of symbols and hieroglyphs. GOULART (Simon);
[Click Below for Full Description]

MACHIAVELLI.) GENTILLET, Innocent.
London: printed by Adam Islip, 1602. London: printed by Adam Islip,, 1602. Divided into three parts, namely, The Counsell, the Religion, and the Policie, which a Prince ought to hold and follow. Against Nicholas Machiavell the Florentine. Translated into English by Simon Patericke. Folio (269 x 182 mm). Contemporary calf, skilfully rebacked to style, red morocco spine label, single gilt rules, blind centrepieces to boards, relined, green sprinkled edges. Bound without initial and final blanks, with two final leaves bearing "A table of the Maximes". Early inscription to title page. Extremities lightly rubbed, a few chips and marks to boards, hinges gently cracked but very firm, some infrequent damp-staining to upper margins and a small tear to lower margin of leaf G5, otherwise a very good copy. First edition in English of the work popularly known as Antimachiavel, a translation of Discours sur les moyens de bien gouverner et maintenir en bonne paix un royaume ou autre principauté (1576). Despite being widely discussed in Elizabethan and Jacobean England, Machiavelli's Il principe was not published in a complete English translation until 1640, a remarkable delay partly explained by the existence of Patericke's translation which cited enough of Machiavelli's original to serve as a substitute for it.

SMITH, William - OVERTON, Henry
London: (1602-[1713]). 440 x 560 mm., early outline colour with some later additions according to pencil note on reverse, with old folds to facilitate binding into a smaller work.; William Smith (1550-1618) was an antiquary and an office of the College of Arms. The twelve maps of William Smith were for years known famously as those of the ANONYMOUS map maker. Although ten of them are derived from those of Christopher Saxton and two from John Norden they are no mere slavish copies. Smith sought local knowledge to improve on earlier works much of which was incorporated into his maps. One such correspondent called William Burton provides the only firm evidence we have that the engraver of the plates was Jodocus Hondius. In 1958 the British Museum acquired four manuscript maps from the Netherlands which provided the conclusive evidence of the authorship of William Smith. These were of Cheshire, Hertfordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire. The name of Hans Woutneel, a Dutch bookseller in London, can be found in connection with two of the maps, but only on one engraved, that of Essex dated 1602. This has led to speculation that his departure from the project, Hondius' departure to work on the copper plates for the atlas of John Speed, or the latter's imminent production were sufficient to end the series. The maps of William Smith beautifully engraved by Hondius remain one of the most desirable of any English county maps. Those in the first state are VIRTUALLY UNOBTAINABLE.Peter Stent died from the plague 29 September 1665 and bequeathed his estate to his wife Susanna, shortly … [Click Below for Full Description]

STRUYS, Jan Jansz.
Cordier, Sinica, col. 2083; STCN (3 copies pt. 1 & 4 copies pt. 2); Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 423; Slot, B.J. The Arabs of the gulf 1602-1784, p. 418; Tiele, Bibl. 462 & 1061. Probably the sixth edition of the account of the three voyages made by Jan Jansz. Struys (1630-1694) trough Asia in 1647-1673. Struys's first journey in 1647 was made as a sailmaker on board an East India merchant ship and brought him to Madagascar, Siam, Formosa (Taiwan) and Japan. On his second journey in 1655 he served aboard the Venetian fleet in a campaign against the Turks, was captured and escaped. His third and most interesting journey brought him to Russia, where in 1668 he set up shop as a master sailmaker. A large chapter of the book is devoted to descriptions of Moscow and rare descriptions of daily life in Russia. Subsequently, Struys made a long journey from Novgorod in the north to Astrakhan in the south. Later he gets sold to a Persian slave trader in Georgia. He travels with a caravan to Isfahan, giving a description of the city and its prominent architecture. Via Bandar-Abbas he travels to Muscat, where he started to work again as a sailmaker and later travelled further to the Dutch East Indies.Added to Struys's journeys (as in many editions) is the horrible account of the shipwreck of the Dutch ship Terschelling on the coast of Bengal in 1661. With an inscription by "Sieburgh" to the German explorer Robert Schlagintweit (1833-1885), dated 1859, on the second front endpaper and Schlagintweit's embossed library stamp on the title page. Two numbers written on the front paste-down and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mexico: Henrico Martinez, 1602. Broadside, 17 x 12 1/4 inches. Old fold lines. Reinforced with silk along central horizontal fold. Two spots of minor loss along central vertical fold, minutely affecting text. Some minor discoloration. Very good. An early Mexican broadside proclaiming the power of the Spanish Inquisition in the New World. The Inquisition had formally begun in New Spain in 1569, when Philip II established tribunals of the Holy Office at Mexico and Lima. It was specifically charged with vigilance against Moors, Jews, and New Christians. The great privileges it exercised and the dread with which Spaniards generally regarded the charge of heresy made the Inquisition an effective check on dangerous thoughts, be they religious, political, or philosophical. The Inquisition largely relied on denunciations by informers and employed torture to secure confessions. The local natives were originally subject to the jurisdiction of Inquisitors, but were later exempted because, as recent converts of supposedly limited mental capacity, they were not fully responsible for their deviations from the faith. The first execution in the New World took place in 1574, and the tenth in 1596. Many of the victims of the Holy Office were amongst the Portuguese settlers who were persecuted for political rather than religious reasons. The present broadside reads, in translation: "Constitution of our most blessed Lord Clement by the Divine Providence Pope the Eighth against those who, not having been promoted to the sacred order of Priesthood, boldly take the authority of the Priest … [Click Below for Full Description]
