[Attributes: Hard Cover]

CHAUCER, GEOFFREY
1602. CHAUCER, GEOFFREY. The Workes of our Ancient and Learned English Poet, Geffrey Chaucer, Newly Printed. London: By Adam Islip, 1602. Folio (315 x 205 mm.). [23], 179, 178-350, 353-376, [13] leaves. Title surrounded by woodcut border. Lacking initial blank [a]1, as always, and errata leaf 3U8. Copperplate portrait of Chaucer surrounded by the arms of his progeny by John Speed. Woodcuts of Chaucer's arms and of the knight, woodcut initials. Black letter. Late nineteenth-century dark brown morocco, blind panel on covers, edges gilt. Small worm track in the margin of the first several gatherings, two very minor repaired tears, one blank corner torn away. A very clean, attractive copy. 1882 gift inscription on front endpaper. Edited by Thomas Speght, revised with the aid of Francis Thynne. According to Pforzheimer, this edition is "the earliest in which thorough punctuation was attempted, and in many other ways it is a distinct improvement upon Speght's first edition [of 1598]." Virtually every early copy of Chaucer that becomes available has been repaired, cleaned, rebound, &c., and the portrait is usually missing. This is quite a lovely copy, wanting only the errata leaf at the end. STC 5080; Pforzheimer 178; Grolier, Langland to Wither, 44. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

LEU, Thomas de.
Paris, 1602.Etching and copper engraving, mounted on a larger piece of contemporary paper, text panels contemporarily separated from print and mounted on verso. Ca. 43 x 56 cm. Framed.Bird's eye view of a battle fought in Hungary between forces loyal to the Habsburgs under the Duke of Mercœur and the Ottomans. » This commemorates the victorie of Philippe Emmanuel, the Duke of Mercœur, in a battle against the Turks, fought in Hungary in 1601. Published in Paris, likely shortly after Mercœur's death in 1602. It was created by Thomas de Leu (1560-1612), a Flemish engraver who lived in Paris. Philippe Emmanuel de Lorraine, Duke of Mercœur was born in 1558 in Nomeny France. In 1589-90, he led the Catholic League in Brittany, in opposition to the ascension of the Protestant Henri IV to the French throne. After the league was defeated, Mercœur was persona not grata in France. Meanwhile, the Habsburg Empire was in the midst of the 'Long War' against the Ottomans. The Austrians felt a need to shore up their position in Lower Hungary. Rudolf's brother, Archduke Matthias, was charged with leading the campaign. Mercœur was eager to redeem himself, fighting for a new cause. In 1597, he travelled to Hungary at the head of an army of 3,000 men composed of French recruits. He distinguished himself as one of the leading Habsburg commanders of the war and won important battles at Nagykanizsa and Györ. He besieged Nagyka … [Click Below for Full Description]

VALERIANO (Piero) [Joannis Pierii Valeriani Bellunensis]
Lugduni [Lyon], Sumptibus Pauli Frelon, 1602. Piero Valeriano Bolzani (1477–1558), also known as Giampietro Valeriano Bolzani, was a notable Renaissance humanist and a favourite of the Medici. The above work was first published in 1556 at Basel and reprinted frequently thereafter. Cristoforo Buondelmonti, an Italian geographer and monk from Florence, visited many of the Greek islands between 1414 and 1430. In 1422, during one of his returns to his home, Buondelmonti brought back the only known manuscript copy of Horapollo's Hieroglyphica, a compendium of interpretations of hieroglyphs; it was published by Aldo Manuzio in 1505. Valeriano's Hieroglyphica was in many ways a continuation of his writings of his tutor, Giorgio Valla, and it does include the original text of Horapollo translated into Latin. However, Valeriano combined the knowledge gained by Horapollo and his studies (based on over 400 other Greek and Latin sources) and produced the first Renaissance dictionary of symbols and hieroglyphs. GEORGETTE DE MONTENAY
ont Not Stated : Not Stated. 1602. Hardcover. Book, A very scarce copy of Georgette de Montenay's collection of Christian emblems. Comprising of one hundred morals and poems accompanied by beautiful engravings by Pierre Woeiriot. A very scarce edition of Georgette de Montenay's 'Emblemes ou Devises Chrestiennes'. 'Emblemes' contains one-hundred emblems, which are typically morals or poems accompanied by illustrations, a form of religious text that was very popular during the 16th and 17th centuries. Montenay's 'Emblemes' are mostly Protestant in their views. An undated copy. ESTC and Copac only have records of the 1619 polygot edition, which differs to this copy in pagination and translation content. The 1619 edition is ESTC record no. S94206. This copy is lacking the title page (A1) and leaves F3 and F4. 1619 edition has a preface and a riddle to the rear, of which this copy is potentially lacking but there is no evidence to the gatherings that this printing had the preface. When collated using the catch-words this copy is lacking pages one, four, twenty-eight, twenty-nine, seventy-four, seventy-eight, seventy-nine, eighty, eighty-one, eighty-two, eighty-five, eighty-six, eighty-nine, ninety-five, and ninety-six. Closed tears to the fore edge of pages twenty, forty, and forty-one. It's unclear when the 'Emblemes' were first published, as there's been evidence of copies existing as early as 1561, despite it being originally thought to have appeared in publication in 1571. It is possible that, due to the religious turmoil at the time, the publication was delayed. The turmoil … [Click Below for Full Description]

JOUBERT, Laurent;
Die Abbildungen zeigen u.a. zwei hübsche Destillieröfen. Insgesamt jedoch gut erhalten. - Ferguson I, 220; Duveen 179; Neu 1206; Partington II, 159/1; Thorndike V, 631; Sudhoff, Paracelsus nach Nr. 93; Sudhoff, Paracelsisten S. 390; VD17 3:005744Y [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Borgogni Gherardo
In Venezia Appresso Giovan Battista Ciotti 1602 16° Pagine 1 carta bianca + 16 carte non numerate + 255 + 2 carte bianche. Legatura ottocentesca in mezza pelle marrone. Titolo e fregi oro al dorso. Piatti marmorizzati. Alcune piccole fioriture sparse. Ottima copia. Cfr.Graesse I p.497 Brunet I p.418 Gamba p.88 N°41 BORGOGNI (Borgogna), Gherardo.
