See photos and description for general condition of this book. Up for your consideration is the first English translation of The Works of Josephus Flavius by Thomas Lodge, published in London in 1602. I am selling this book for a gentleman whose parents owned the book. Based on a written receipt, the book was purchased in October of 1986. Based on another note, the book was also rebound. The book is in nice condition for a 400 year old book but there is some damage to the lower corners of the last several pages of the book plus there is some staining to the upper third of the last 200+ pages. There is also writing in pencil on the first inside page. And it looks like someone added their touch to the title page in the 1800s and there maybe occasional notes inside. Please see photos for general condition. Please contact me if you have any questions. Book will be mailed via UPS with signature required upon delivery.

Chaucer, Geoffrey [ed. Thomas Speght]
London: Adam Islip, 1602. First Thus. Second appearance of the Thomas Speght edition of Chaucer, and the seventh edition of Chaucer's works overall. Folio (pages 315 x 209 mm) collating: [24 leaves], 376 leaves, [14 leaves]. Lacking the first blank A1, otherwise complete with the potrait of Chaucer as well as the final errata leaf, UUU8 (sometimes lacking). Bound in full period-style black morocco. The portrait of Chaucer is remargined. First sixteen leaves with marginal repair to the upper inside margin (a handful of other leaves with corners repaired). Black letter with double columns. Internally, an excellent copy. "This edition was considerably revised mainly with the aid of Francis Thynne. It is the earliest in which thorough punctuation was attempted, and in many other ways it is a distinct improvement upon Speght's first edition" (Pforzheimer, page 179). A sumptuous collection of literature from one of England's greatest early masters. Geoffrey Chaucer is credited with setting the style of Middle English literature. He is often considered England's first "poet laureate" - after he received a reward from Richard II for one of his poems. Although Chaucer is famous chiefly for his medieval-era masterpiece, The Canterbury Tales, his works are also thought to have help make the English vernacular a poplar literary language. While famous in their own right, Chaucer's works have also influenced just about every major luminary of English literature to come after him. Grolier 43. STC 5077. Pforzheimer 177.

Justus LIPSIUS; Polybius
Antwerp: Officina Plantinian, Apud Ioannem Moretum. Although title pages dated 1602, some place this printing as 1598. Quarto, modern plain vellum to period style, recent endpapers, pp. 366 (2), xxix, (5), with separate title page for Analecta. Collated complete with 5 engraved plates in first volume, one of which is folding, some in-text illustrations, Analecta also illustrated including three small in-text fine engravings. Binding very good, contents good to very good with mild tanning to pages, dampstaining to bottom margin of text, hardly visible except to pp. 193-203 where there is a definite brown-edged tide mark to bottom margin that goes into the bottom of the text just slightly. Otherwise, nice clean copy, quite rare. Text in Latin but there is a section in which the text from Polybius' De Romanorum militia in original Greek with Latin translation appear in parallel columns. Good.

The bulk was printed at Brahe's observatory on the island of Hven but left unfinished; it was completed by Kepler in Prague. This work, a consequence of the new star of 1572, established the observational and theoretical techniques which initiated the era of modern scientific astronomy. The number and accuracy of Brahe's observations provided the evidence for verifying the heliocentric theory and for Kepler's deduction of his three laws of planetary motion.'The star of 1572 and the comets observed at Hven had cleared the way for the restoration of astronomy by helping to destroy old prejudices; and Tycho therefore resolved to write a great work on these recent phenomena which should embody all results of his observations in any way bearing on them. Richard Carew
USED: for Detailed Condition see further down item description below. Only the second English 'County History' to appear in print, and the first about Cornwall, Richard Carew's "The Survey of Cornwall" is widely regarded as one of the most important books ever written about the county, and this is a very rare specimen a 1602 first edition. To put some timescale perspective on the matter, this 1602 volume's 'Dedication' by the author is to the outstanding Elizabethan explorer and adventurer Sir Walter Raleigh (1552-1618), it was published and printed when Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603) was still on the throne, and William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was in his thirties! Richard Carew of Anthony (1555-1620) was from a prominent gentry family in Cornwall, a member of the Elizabethan Society of Antiquarians, High Sheriff of Cornwall and M.P. for Saltash. His 'Survey' was initially hand-written copies for his own amusement and to entertain friends, but through a high degree of interest and pressure from others he was persuaded to expand and update his original writings and commit them to print. The result, first published and printed in 1602, gives a vivid picture of Elizabethan life in Cornwall: with Natural History observations of the Land and Sea and the creatures to be found; the important Cornish resource of Fishing, Geography, Minerals and Mining, accounts of earlier History, the minutiae of Family and Life and Sport in Cornwall, and much more. This particular volume was previously owned by Sir John Call (1732-1801), 1st Baronet of Whiteford, High Sheriff of Cornwall, M.P. for … [Click Below for Full Description]

Small thick 8vo. Ellizabethan Law Enforcement. William Lambarde (1536-1601) was an antiquary and lawyer, who, among his many accomplishments, compiled the earliest county history, THE PERAMBULATION OF KENT (1576). His appointment as a justice of the peace for Kent in 1578, provided Lambarde with the background of experience which led to the present work; and it has long been regarded as the standard authority on the subject It is of great value not only for the study of criminal procedure in Elizabethan England; along with its companion, THE DUTIES OF CONSTABLES, it offers also a window into the society and mores of the age of Shakespeare and his Constable Dogbody. "He [Lambarde] praised English justice, but was sharply critical of the shortcomings of the juries, which had led government to circumvent them through such agencies as Star Chamber, and thus curtail liberty. Extolling the blessings of peace and deploring the disorders attendant on war, he showed a dislike of foreigners and inveighed, among other things, against ale houses, vagabonds, and engrossers, but he made little reference to national problems and none to felony or murder." (ODNB) Both EIRENARCHA and THE DUTIES OF CONSTABLES, were continually reprinted, updated and expanded, and the two are frequently found bound together. [Click Below for Full Description]

GUARINI Giovanni Battista
1602. Engraved title and portrait of the author, and six full-page plates. Woodcut headpieces, ornaments and initials, some historiated, throughout, with Ciotti's device on title page of second part. 2 parts in one vol. 4to (212 x 150mm). [16]ff, 488pp; [6]ff, 64 pp. Correction to text (insertion of line omitted in printing), p.96. Nineteenth-century vellum over pasteboard, spine with gilt bands and ornaments, and gilt-lettered title and date in morocco labels in second and fourth compartments (corners lightly bumped, minor worming to lower part of upper hinge, labels chipped). Venice, Ciotto, Definitive edition of Giovanni Battista Guarini?s pastoral drama, the text fixed by Guarini himself in this, the twentieth impression of the text (although Venetian printer Ciotto?s erratic numbering has prompted some to suggest that the generous numbering was little more than a marketing ploy). In what Gamba refers to as the ?copious number? of editions of the text, he ranks this among the best. Alongside the attractive engraved title page, this edition has an engraved portrait of the author by Lukas Kilian, and six full-page engravings, the third of which is signed by F. Valegio. Provenance: Bookplates of Rinaldo Cenni on front paste-down and verso of front free endpaper, that of collector Giorgio Fanan on recto. ?D. Parikian? inscribed on front free endpaper. Open tear in lower blank corner of pp.38, 449, some foxing and light staining throughout. Gamba, 556. D. H. Thomas, ?An Annotated Checklist of Editions of the Works of Battista Guarini? Giovanni Battista de’ CAVALIERI o CAVALLERIS
Bulino, firmato in lastra in basso a sinistra. Engraving, signed at lower left. After Luca Penni. Example of the third state, with the address of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

DI VALVASONE ERASMO
In Venetia, per Fran. Bolzetta (1602). Cm. 15, cc. (4) 167 + 1 c.b. Esemplare ben conservato.
BLAEU, Willem Janszoon
Amsterdam, 1602 [but c1621]. Amsterdam,, 1602 [but c1621].. Each globe with a diameter of 230mm (nine inches) composed of 12 engraved gores, hand-coloured and heightened in gold, and two polar calottes, all pasted on to a plaster sphere, rotating on brass pinions within brass meridian ring with graduated scale, and a graduated brass altitude quadrant, set into a seventeenth century Dutch wooden base with an engraved horizon ring, adumbrating scales, calendar, almanacs etc. With usual defects: paper equinoctial tables present gaps that are filled and restored, small splits along the gores, several partially deleted entries, small scattered spots but in general in good condition for such an early globe pair, brass polar rings missing. Willem Janszoon Blaeu's pair of nine-inch table globes are amongst the rarest to survive in comparison with the smaller or larger globes by Blaeu (four, six, 13.5, and 26 inches). Blaeu's globes were aimed at wealthy merchants and noblemen. Even at the time, they were a luxury purchase: the terrestrial globe cost 16 guilders and the celestial globe cost 9 guilders. However, it was also the most advanced cartographic document of the age: it was a monument and tool; to be used as much as admired. Terrestrial globe Willem Jansz Blaeu collected information that Dutch mariners gathered from around world and brought back to Amsterdam. Crews were instructed to record information about the lands they visited and the skies they saw. Blaeu incorporated these observations in maps and globes. Through his web of contacts and thanks to assiduous research, … [Click Below for Full Description]

[LAFRERI, Antonio]
Rome,: Ioanes Orlandi, 1602. Rome,: Ioanes Orlandi,, 1602. 1602. Engraved map. A rare early map of Ireland published by the Lafreri School. The island's shape is remarkably accurate compared to contemporary maps. The territory is scattered with mountains, forests, lakes and rivers, as well as major towns, and includes names of the provinces. A vessel navigates the North Atlantic Ocean and two sea monsters seize the seas. The Connaught bulge is more in evidence in this map that it was to be for another 100 years. A curious detail is 'Purgesoriu S. Patricij', or St Patrick's Purgatory, in a lake in the island's north. According to legend, the site dates from the fifth century, when God showed Saint Patrick a cave on Station Island, on Lough Derg, that was an entrance to Purgatory. The site was mentioned in texts as early as 1185 and became an important pilgrimage site in Medieval times. It appeared on maps as early as the fifteenth century and it was the only Irish site noted on Martin Behaim's famous globe of 1482. The geography of the map follows Bolognino Zaltieri's 1565 map of Ireland. The author of the map was most likely Antonio Lafreri, the leading map publisher of the time. Born France in 1512, he settled in Rome in 1540 and soon opened an engraving and print selling business, which became the largest and most prolific one in Rome. The activity of Claudio Duchetti, Antonio Lafreri's nephew, flourished from about 1570 to about 1585. Among his earliest maps were a series of maps of the Mediterranean islands, including Minorca, Majorca and Cyprus. His stock, whic … [Click Below for Full Description]

STRUYS, Jan Jansz.
Cordier, Sinica, col. 2083; STCN (3 copies pt. 1 & 4 copies pt. 2); Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 423; Slot, B.J. The Arabs of the gulf 1602-1784, p. 418; Tiele, Bibl. 462 & 1061. Probably the sixth edition of the account of the three voyages made by Jan Jansz. Struys (1630-1694) trough Asia in 1647-1673. Struys's first journey in 1647 was made as a sailmaker on board an East India merchant ship and brought him to Madagascar, Siam, Formosa (Taiwan) and Japan. On his second journey in 1655 he served aboard the Venetian fleet in a campaign against the Turks, was captured and escaped. His third and most interesting journey brought him to Russia, where in 1668 he set up shop as a master sailmaker. A large chapter of the book is devoted to descriptions of Moscow and rare descriptions of daily life in Russia. Subsequently, Struys made a long journey from Novgorod in the north to Astrakhan in the south. Later he gets sold to a Persian slave trader in Georgia. He travels with a caravan to Isfahan, giving a description of the city and its prominent architecture. Via Bandar-Abbas he travels to Muscat, where he started to work again as a sailmaker and later travelled further to the Dutch East Indies.Added to Struys's journeys (as in many editions) is the horrible account of the shipwreck of the Dutch ship Terschelling on the coast of Bengal in 1661. With an inscription by "Sieburgh" to the German explorer Robert Schlagintweit (1833-1885), dated 1859, on the second front endpaper and Schlagintweit's embossed library stamp on the title page. Bible. English. Geneva. 1602
Imprinted . By Robert Barker, London, 1602. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" Tall (tall thick). A Unique Interleaved Geneva Bible 3 Volume Set. This unique copy was was interleaved throughout roughly at the time of publication to allow for commentary, with one blank leaf for every printed text leaf. This set has extensive, large contemporary annotations in several hands (at least a fine court hand), on both the inserted leaves and in the printed text. Possibly from the library of the noted translator John Healey (died 1610), famous as the translator of St. Augustine's "City of God"; with a period holograph signature at upper right corner of the first volume's title page reads "J. Hea" (remainder lacking due to wear and to tape repair); holograph hand in some of actual text volumes resembles this signature); remaining holograph entries on interleaved pages unidentified, but evidently that of (apparently three) divines and/or scholars of the period, with abbreviated references to former translations and/or commentaries (chiefly in Latin); also particularly noteworthy for the interleaved commentary (in English) on the text of Matthew 5: 13 ("doxology" at the end of the Lord's Prayer). 3 volumes complete; bound uniformly in full dark brown modern calf, gilt-stamped and decorated spines, new cream endpapers, all edges trimmed and stained red-brown. AELIANUS, Claudius
1602. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Claudius Aelianus was a 2nd-century Roman orator known for his lessons in Greek and works that describe Greco-Roman lifestyle and world-views. Only two of his works have survived, one being 'Varia Historia' - a collection of anecdotes, maxims, biographical sketches, and reports of natural wonders. Aelianus describes mythological heroes, living rulers and Caesars, Olympic athletes, religious beliefs, funeral customs, Greek art, fishing techniques, serpent and animal worship, styles of dress and costumes, and the lives of Greek and Roman playwrights. 'Varia Historia' is generally considered to be a 3rd-century magazine, even though the first edition was not printed until 1545. This 1602 edition was published in Paris. [Attributes: First Edition]

MERCATOR (GÉRARD ; 1512-1594) - HONDIUS (JODOCUS ; 1563-1612) - LE CLERC (JEAN ; 1560-1621) :
I. Hondius sculp. - I Leclerc excu.
