Londini: Thomas Wight, 1602 A rare printing of the Magna Carta in contemporary full leather binding, originally belonging to Thomas Athew (or Athowe), who was a lawyer who contributed a legal brief to Lady Anne Clifford's inheritance dispute in the early 17th century. She described him as 'a great antiquary'. This printing is the first 17th century printing of Magna Carta. The binding has lost its title label and is worn with fraying to the top of the spine, wear to the bottom of the spine and corners and scuffing to joints. It is sound. Page edges red. The endpapers are from a manuscript - part of the rear pastedown is missing and they are split at the joints. There is a large armorial bookplate of John Perrett which covers the whole of the reverse of the front endpaper and the edge of the title page. Athew has signed the title page three times - one dated 3rd November, 1623, and made a small note. Contents: To the Reader 2pp (with decorative initial capital); First Table 2pp; Second Table 6pp; Magna Charta text - with large decorative initial capital. Text varies between Latin, French and English. The pages have brown toning and occasional marking. The title page and following page have a small nick in the paper at the side. Athew has made margin notes against sections in pages 187 and 188 (Discentes and Condicions). A very scarce work with an interesting past.
