Mexican Imprint]
Mexico: Henrico Martinez, 1602. Broadside, 17 x 12 1/4 inches. Old fold lines. Reinforced with silk along central horizontal fold. Two spots of minor loss along central vertical fold, minutely affecting text. Some minor discoloration. Very good. An early Mexican broadside proclaiming the power of the Spanish Inquisition in the New World. The Inquisition had formally begun in New Spain in 1569, when Philip II established tribunals of the Holy Office at Mexico and Lima. It was specifically charged with vigilance against Moors, Jews, and New Christians. The great privileges it exercised and the dread with which Spaniards generally regarded the charge of heresy made the Inquisition an effective check on dangerous thoughts, be they religious, political, or philosophical. The Inquisition largely relied on denunciations by informers and employed torture to secure confessions. The local natives were originally subject to the jurisdiction of Inquisitors, but were later exempted because, as recent converts of supposedly limited mental capacity, they were not fully responsible for their deviations from the faith. The first execution in the New World took place in 1574, and the tenth in 1596. Many of the victims of the Holy Office were amongst the Portuguese settlers who were persecuted for political rather than religious reasons. The present broadside reads, in translation: "Constitution of our most blessed Lord Clement by the Divine Providence Pope the Eighth against those who, not having been promoted to the sacred order of Priesthood, boldly take the authority of the Priest … [Click Below for Full Description]

BERTAUT (Jean);
[Click Below for Full Description]

JUDAICA MODENA
1602. (JUDAICA—ITALIAN). Collection of seven printed governmental decrees regarding the Jews of Modena, Italy, 1602-1859. Modena, Italy: various publishers, 1602-1859. Various sizes, broadside (the largest measures 17 by 23 inches) to octavo. $15,000.Superb collection of official governmental decrees charting the history of the Jewish community of Modena, in north-central Italy, from the stigma of wearing a yellow mark in 1602, to the grant of full emancipation in 1859. Items #4 and #5 illustrate how quickly the fortunes of the Jewish community could change. After helping the carbonari in their successful coup against the Duke, the Jews were granted full equal rights in a decree issued February, 1831. Just one month later, however, after the Duke had been restored to power, the government published a decree reenacting all former restrictions and imposing a fine against the Jews-presumably to punish them for having helped with the coup. This superb collection includes, in chronological order:1. Grida Sopra Gli Ebrei… [Decree enforcing all Jewish males and females from age nine to wear a yellow mark on their hat or clothing. Jews cannot hire non-Jewish servants. Despite these restrictions, non-Jews are not to vilify Jews]. Modena: July 28th, 1602. Small folio, single leaf printed on recto. Woodcut official crest; woodcut initial.2. Decretum Super Usuris Hebraeorum Foeneratorum totius Status Celsitdinis Suae… [Decree regulating collateral on defaulted loans in the hands of Jewish bankers and money-lenders]. LICETI, Fortunio
Genoa, Giuseppe Pavoni, 1602. 4to (224 x 145 mm), pp [xvi] 429 [33], woodcut device on title-page and the peacock device at end; two small wormholes in outer blank margins not affecting text, small wormtrack in last few leaves touching a few letters of index, a very good, crisp copy in contemporary limp vellum, spine repaired.First edition of Liceti's treatise on human embryology, his first published work out of a total of seventy-seven. This work expounds a traditional Aristotelian doctrine of generation and embryological development. 'Hieronymus Capivaccius, F. Licetius, J. Costaeus and V. Cardelinus, who wrote in 1608, were the last true supporters of the ancient theories, such as that the male embryo was twice as hot and developed twice as quickly as the female' (Needham, History of embryology p 114). This work achieved an instant reputation for its author, who was only twenty-five and already professor of philosophy and medicine at Pisa; he went on to take up similar posts at Padua.Liceti wrote on a variety of topics but had a lifelong interest in embryology. In 1616 he wrote a dissertation on intra-uterine life and changes, De perfecta constitutione hominis in utero, and was the author of the first and most popular treatise on teratology ever published, his De monstrorum, also published in 1616.Krivatsy 6964; OCLC records NLM, Philadelphia College of Physicians, McGill, Stanford, Johns Hopkins, and University of Missouri [Attributes: First Edition]

Manso, Pedro (Obispo de Calahorra y la Calzada)
1602. . 1602 - Impreso por Diego Mares. Logroño. . 1 Vol. . Portada+4 H.+140 fol.+14 H. de tabla. Folio Menor. [Click Below for Full Description]
