Typis Wolffgangi Richteri impensis haeredum Petri Fischeri, Francofurti 1602 - Hardcover. Small octavo. 378pp. (+ xxx pp: index +Carmen Describens Genethliacum). Early seventeenth century (?) full leather binding. Brown calf with raised bands with gilt stamped leather title and elaborate gilt decorations between bands. Marbled endpapers. Three fold-out tables (two printed on both sides). Woodcut head and tail-pieces. Decorated title-page with small b/w medallion-style portrait of author on verso. An interesting, early printing - published only nine years after the first edition - of this important compilation of astrological texts by Heinrich Rantzau (1526-98), the German humanist, author and statesman. The book was first published in Frankfurt in 1593, then Oldenburg in 1594, and as far as we can determine this printing (Frankfurt 1602) was its third edition. (Gardner 1069). Boards worn, slight loss at top of spine, bottom of spine chafed, fold-out tables worn & chipped around edges (but complete), worming to bottom-corners of pages 145 to176 (with loss, slightly affecting text), lesser worming (small holes) to bottom-margins of pages 191 to 216, occasional browning throughout. Creases turning to tears in folds of the diagrams. Early previous owner's names on title page, and a few inoffensive pen annotations. Still a solid, complete and handsome copy, VG by antiquarian standards. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Brief mit eigenhändiger Unterschrift u. Ringsiegel

O.O. [Nördlingen?], 24. Juli 1602. Dt. - Lit.: Wolfgang Behringer: Hexenverfolgung in Bayern. Ore nouelment imprimee

London: Londini In Ædibus Thomæ Wight. 1602., 1602. Book. Very Good. Leather. 3rd Edition. Description: Sm. 8vo (6 × 4 in): 99, [2] l. (last leaf blank). Early calf, rebacked, embossed medallions to top and bottom boards. · Register: 8º: A-M^8 N^4. · Condition: Very clean and well-margined. · Comments: Dyer's Reports, the second to be published under their author's name, first issued in January 1586. This abridgment followed a few years later and was reprinted three times, the copy here being from the third edition. The chronological order of the cases is preserved and the page of the original given in the margin. The first two editions are very rare and were probably printed in violation of Richard Tottell's monopoly patent. John Baker suggests that this abridgment would have been of use to "the impecunious or less industrious student" as a substitute for the full version.

Quarta impressam. Lisboa, Iorge Rodriguez, 1602. In 8.º de 19x14 cm. [EN] AVELLAR, Andre do. Chronographia ou repertorio dos tempos . Lisbon: Jorge Rodrigues por Estevão Lopez, 1602. 8°, contemporary vellum. Woodcut hemisphere on title, repeated on f. H5; numerous woodcut illustrations in text. Copy with minor browning, contemporary notes on a few leaves. Missing 4 unn. inital leaves with part of the indice. Fifth (?) and final edition of this work dealing mainly with astrology, meteorology and geography; all the editions are of great rarity. Originally a free translation of Jeronimo Chaves’ Chronographia o repertorio de los tiempos, the later Portuguese editions (Lisbon 1585, Coimbra 1590 and 1593, and Lisbon 1594) were significantly altered. Attention is given to America (Brazil as well as the Spanish possessions), Africa, Asia and the polar regions. Woodcuts include one of the Earth that shows Brazil and the Southern Continent, a cross-section of the Earth, each of the 12 signs of the zodiac, the sun, the moon and the five known planets. A chapter on medicine and astrology contains three anatomical cuts (one of them full-page). There are also tables and diagrams. This work is of considerable scientific interest, since it is one of the earliest almanacs to use and describe the new Gregorian calendar, adopted only a decade before this work’s first appearance (1593). Avellar gives a complete explanation of the system of epacts that is essential for understanding the new calendar. The calendar was not completely explained until Clavius published his monumental treatise in 1603. Andre do Avellar, professor of mathematics at the University of Coimbra, was the most noteworthy Portuguese successor to Pedro Nunes. He was one of the New Christians at the University who was persecuted by the Inquisition from 1616 to 1626. j Alden & Landis 602/10: citing the BL copy only, with 372 ll. Inocêncio I, 58-9.

Venice: Giovanni Battista Ciotti, 1602. First edition. Leather. Very Good/The first methodical Italian dictionary based on literary examples, il Memoriale della lingua appeared ten years before the Accademia della Crusca issued its famous dictionary. Gamba points out that Pergamino, who was a friend of Tasso, utilized examples that the Crusca missed, such as Tasso's dialogues, Guido Cavalcanti, Ludovico Dolce and Gian Giorgio Trissino. The first edition is quite scarce, absent from recent auction records, with copies scattered in a few important libraries. Gamba himself saw only the second edition of 1617. A third edition appeared in 1656.. Folio (31 cm); [12], 524, 395 [i.e. 375], lacks two unnumbered leaves errata at end. Title page in red and black. Printer's device on title page and colophon. Text printed in two columns. Woodcut head pieces; initials. Rebacked in period style, retaining eighteenth-century boards in flecked calf gilt with double fillets. Title page and colophon a little worn, but contents generally clean and bright. Few marginal worm trails. Discrete 19th-century library blindstamp on title page, colophon, and few other leaves.

        Americae Nona & Postrema Pars

Frankfurt: Matthias Becker, 1602. First Latin edition of the ninth part of the De Bry’s Grand Voyages, containing an extremely important account of a Pacific voyage by Olivier van Noort -- as well as much ethnographic material relating to the indigenous Indian culture of Mexico and Peru. As the importance of the America material in all of the De Bry volumes is extremely well-known -- “the cornerstone of every library of Americana” (Penrose) --, let us focus on the Pacific material. Like the earlier parts of the De Bry series, this volume provided the majority of European readers with the first detailed illustrations of many of the locales described, particularly of the Philippines and other Pacific locales. In fact, according to Lach, the van Noort account contains “the earliest first-hand Dutch descriptions of the Ladrones (Marianas), the Philippines, and Borneo.” -- Asia III.1.442. On the political front, it was the first publication to inform Europe that the Spanish monopoly of the Pacific was being aggressively challenged by the Dutch, including an illustration showing the battle of Manila. Van Noort journeyed to the Moluccas via the Straits of Magellan, entering them in September of 1599 but, owing to disastrous weather conditions in that precipitous region, it did not reach the Pacific until the end of the following February. Continuing along the coast of Chile, he stopped at Peru, New Spain, and eventually reached the Mariana Islands, Manila, Borneo and Java. “Van Noort describes the Ladrones very much as did the earlier Spanish writers: the people are superb swimmers, incorrigible thieves, live without law, hold women in common, and subsist on bananas, coconuts, sweet potatoes and sugar cane, which they gladly trade for pieces of old iron. The Dutch writer reports on the visible damage suffered by many of the islanders from the Spanish pox (syphilis)... the Dutch were impressed and somewhat bewildered by the vast number of Philippine islands. To thread their way from the San Bernadino Straits to Manila they seized both native canoes and a Chinese junk to obtain pilots. They notice the usually naked and tattooed natives, the houses on stilts, and the many boats and ships which bring what is called tribute from the outlying islands to the Spanish at Manila. From a captured Chinese pilot they learned much about Manila’s size and fortification and about its large Chinese settlement. Luzon is thought to be larger than Scotland and England combined.” -- Lach, III.1.442. Chirino (Cartography of the Philippines) includes 4 maps in the present volume, all notable for their early date: #9 Ladrones insula descriptio; #10 Quid in Ladrones insula Hollandis acciderit; #11 De sinu Baye la Baye, which he terms the “first scene of Albay in southern Luzon province, where Admiral van Noort paused on route to Manila. Dutch ship is anchored in the bay, with a tattooed native holding a bow and arrow, while another wears shorts”; #13 Hollandorum cum Hispanis ante Manillam pugna navalis. The van Noort was first published in Dutch, in editions of 1601 and a corrected edition of 1602. As the first Latin edition, this account in the de Bry series was the first to gain a general European readership. * Church 168; Griffin, Bibliography of the Philippines, p. 24; Medina XXX; Chirino, Cartography of the Philippines p. 20 & pp. 79ff.. Folio, 362 pp., with 1 map outside collation; (1) f., xxv numbered plates; 100 pp (misbound after plates); (1) f., XIV plates. Bound in later vellum. Blank lower margin of title and following 2 leaves re-margined; typical light browning to text leaves almost always seen in this series, but generally not affecting maps and plates, which are in very good impressions. Good.

51. Dimensioni: 440x380. The importance of this map realized by Magini consists in the great assemblage work needed for its realization, which is completely different from any previous printed work based on Pirro Logorio?s and Gastaldi?s creations. This is, in fact, the result of the assemblage of many regional maps previously realized; Gastaldi?s Puglia, 1567, Bonifacio? Abruzzo, 1587 and Parisio?s Calabria, 1589 for the printed part, the paintings of Egnatio Danti in the Vatican Gallery and the Atlas Mario Cartaro and Niccolò Antonio Stigliola realized, which is nowadays know through its copies. Engraved by Benjamin Wright, this example is taken from the first edition of l?Italia, posthumously published by the son, Fabio, in 1620. Magnificent work, in excellent condition.         Melencolia I

Bulino, 1602, firmato e datato in lastra in basso. La composizione è assolutamente fedele all?originale. Engraving, 1602, signed and dated in plate at the bottom. Example in the first state of two, before the address of Danker Dankerts. A beautiful impression, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, with narrow margins, in good condition.A very faithful copy of the homonymous famous engraving by Albrecht Dürer, this work is carried out by Wierix after almost 90 years from the original. The presence of the monogram of the Master of Nuremberg, suggests a tribute to him and shows the great influence of the work at a distance of about a century from its execution. The composition is absolutely faithful to the original. At night or in relative darkness, lit by a rainbow and a comet, a winged female figure and thoughtful is sitting on a stone terrace. In the background, a body of water over which hovers a bat holding a scroll that contains the explanatory title. Surrounded by an impressive and seemingly chaotic series of objects, the winged figure is as companions in his lonely night, a sleeping dog and a winged cherub. Hieronimus Wierix, a member of the famous family of engravers and artists in Antwerp, he began his career working with Christoph Plantin,'s largest publisher of the time in Flanders, where he became an expert engraver. His first independent work is dated 1577, and after the period he spent in prison for his ideas to the rebels Catholic Spain. The best derivation of the Melelcolia by Dürer.
