Perret, Jacques.; THOMAS DE LEU
1601. PERRET, Jacques. Des Fortifications et Artifices, Architecture et Perspective. 11 ff text, all but the last printed on recto only. Engraved title and 22 double-spread engraved plates by Thomas de Leu. Folio, 440 x 285 mm, bound in contemporary full vellum preserved in a maroon half morocco folding box. [Paris, 1620]. |~||~||~||~||~| Second Edition of this visionary architectural work from the time of Henri IV. The text and original drawings for the plates are the work of Jacques Perret, Savoyard engineer and architect. The engraved title depicts a classical portal crowned by an equestrian portrait of Henry IV; at the foot of the title appears a bird's eye view of the city of Paris and the following legend: "Par le grand Roy Henri IIII. Le vingt deuxieme de Mars 1594." Perret's remarkable book is comprised of plates and text dealing with imaginary fortifications and city plans. The most extraordinary aspect of the engravings centers on the surreal quality of the fortifications and the visionary designs of the buildings, including one thirteen-story edifice, complete with rooftop sculptures, urns and fountains, which prefigures the modern urban skyscraper. The First Edition, published 1601, had considerably more text, however the same illustrations. Both are uncommon. Title page and first text leaf with marginal repair at the bottom, some very light staining not effecting the illustrations, vellum with staining and early repairs. Still a very nice, unsophisticated, wide margined copy. Cockle 799. Millard, French 139 (First Edition). Berlin Katalog 2368. Not in Fowler, G … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Plinius Secundus, Gaius (Pliny the Elder).
London, Adam Islip, 1601. Folio (32 x 20 cm). 2 vols. in one. (58), 614, (42) pp. (12), 632, (86) pp. Elaborate woodcut device on title-page; woodcut initials, head and tailpieces. 19th century half morocco & marbled boards, spine tooled in blind, lettered in gilt, raised bands. Pliny the Elder's renowned Natural History in its first publication in English, translated by Philemon Holland, the greatest translator of the Elizabethan age. The "Naturalis Historia" is one of the largest single works to have survived from the Roman empire to the modern day and purports to cover the entire field of ancient knowledge, based on the best authorities available to Pliny. He claims to be the only Roman ever to have undertaken such a work. It comprised 37 books in 10 volumes and covered over 20.000 facts on topics including the fields of botany, zoology, astronomy , geology and mineralogy as well as the exploitation of those resources. It remains a standard work for the Roman period and the advances in technology and understanding of natural phenomena at the time. Some technical advances he discusses are the only sources for those inventions, such as hushing in mining technology or the use of water mills for crushing or grinding corn. Much of what he wrote about has been confirmed by archaeology. "We know from Pliny that there were important pearl fisheries in the Gulf [.] Pliny identifies Tylos (Bahrain) as a place famous for its pearls [. He] attests that pearls were the most highly rated valuable in Roman society, and that those from the Gulf were specially praised [.] The pearl relat … [Click Below for Full Description]

1601. Folio (220 x 317 mm). 12 books bound in 4 volumes. With 10 engr. title pages, 252 engraved illustrations, 3 engr. views, 17 engr. maps, and 3 armorial engravings. Bound at the end are 5 extra maps and views (including a world map and a view of Jerusalem) from Marino Sanuto's 1611 "Liber secretorum fidelium crucis". Slightly later Spanish limp vellum with ms. title to spine. Ties. All twelve books of Théodore de Bry's "Petits Voyages", the greatest single collection of material on early voyages to the East Indies and considered unique in its extraordinary wealth of cartographical and visual material on Africa, India, and South Asia. Notably, book seven includes Gasparo Balbi's groundbreaking account of the Middle East, first published in 1590 as "Viaggio dell' Indie Orientali" - a mere 16 years before this present issue, making this the second appearance in print altogether and the first Latin translation. Balbi, a Venetian jewel merchant, travelled extensively in the Arabian Peninsula in search of precious stones. From Venice he sailed for Aleppo, proceeding to Bir and from there overland to Baghdad, descending the Tigris to Basra, where he embarked for India. While in the Persian Gulf, he studied the pearl industry, noting that the best pearls were to be found at Bahrain and Julfar. He refers to islands in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi (including Sir Bani Yas and Das) and to several coastal settlements that were to become permanently established, such as Dubai and Ras al Khaima. Jacobus Grassius (Johann Jacob Grasser 1579-1627, Poet Laureate in Basel in 1601), and descriptive text, dated 1601, within elaborate allegorical cartouche lower left, scale lower right, the sea decorated with magnificent galleons, warships and boats, threatened by terrible sea monsters, by "CHS", probably Master Christoph otherwise known as Christoph Schweicker of Strasbourg (who was one of the artists for Munster's "Cosmographia"), and "CH", after Sophianos (without a rare separate ninth sheet printing the key, and giving a list of ancient and modern place-names; some light browning to edges and joins, some discreet repairs lower left). Abraham ORTELIUS (1528 - 1598)
SADO ISLAND MAP
[Japan: n.d. but probably 18th century]. Gold, silver, and copper mining on Sado Island, just off the coast of Niigata Prefecture, had its beginnings in ancient times. With the discovery in 1601 of the rich Aikawa gold and silver mine, Sado experienced an economic boom. The Edo shogunate assembled miners and slave laborers (mostly the homeless) from throughout Japan and sent them to Sado to exploit the Aikawa mine and three other nearby mines. It soon became the largest gold and silver mining site in Japan, attracting a population of more than 50,000 and it, to a very large degree, financed the Edo shogunate for several hundred years. A series of unique mining, smelting, and minting technologies developed at Sado were disseminated to other mines throughout Japan. Today, the Sado complex of mines is on the "Tentative List" of Unesco World Heritage Sites (and much of our description is derived from the detailed article prepared for submission to Unesco). This fine map depicts the mountain town of Aikawa and its nearby port city with the government warehouses for gold, silver, and copper; the entrances to the fives mines (red dots); local rivers (especially "Muddy River") and main thoroughfares; local streets ("Miso Street," "Timber Street," "Paper Street," "Barber Street," etc.); the shipyard; gates to the mining areas; shrines and temples; storage areas for grain and rice; water removal systems for the mines; etc. The artist of this map has provided a color "key" to the features of the island and its mining activities: red dots are the entrances to the mines, orange for the … [Click Below for Full Description]

VÉNEGAS, Miguél and Andrés Marcos BURRIEL.
Eberstadt 128:156; Howes V69; JCB I, 1601; Sabin 98843; Streeter coll. IV, 2433. First edition of the French translation of one of the earliest and most important works on early California. The original Spanish edition was written by Andrés Marcos Burriel (1719-1762), a Spanish Jesuit, after memoires by Miguél Vénegas (1680-1764), who was a Jesuit as well. This French translation, by Marc Antoine Eidous, was based on the English one, and makes no mention of the Spanish authors at all. Vénegas had never actually been to California, but relied on relations of several missionaries who had been there. His book, after being edited and compiled by Burriel, became the most extensive account on Lower California of the 18th century. It contains some rare facts and details on the work of the missionaries and on the customs of the Californian inhabitants. The work was also responsible for putting an end to the myth that California was an island, which was proven when in 1746 father Ferdinand Consag led an expedition to the mouth of the Colorado River, sailing completely around the Gulf of California. An account of this voyage can be found in the third volume, which can be regarded a supplement volume to the other two and is also edited by Burriel. This supplement contains next to the relation of Consag, extracts of other works on California and Northwest Coast explorations up to 1754. A very good copy, with only some minor smudges to the half-title of volume one, and an occasional spot throughout. Binding with minor restorations, corners lightly bumped, but otherwise also very good.
