Abraham ORTELIUS (1528 - 1598)
After the death of Abraham Ortelius in 1598, Jan Keerbergen published a new edition of Epitome, with 123 maps all engraved by Ambrose and Ferdinand Arsenius after Philipp Galle. Then, Jan Baptiste Vrients acquired the plates of both of theme. SADO ISLAND MAP
[Japan: n.d. but probably 18th century]. Gold, silver, and copper mining on Sado Island, just off the coast of Niigata Prefecture, had its beginnings in ancient times. With the discovery in 1601 of the rich Aikawa gold and silver mine, Sado experienced an economic boom. The Edo shogunate assembled miners and slave laborers (mostly the homeless) from throughout Japan and sent them to Sado to exploit the Aikawa mine and three other nearby mines. It soon became the largest gold and silver mining site in Japan, attracting a population of more than 50,000 and it, to a very large degree, financed the Edo shogunate for several hundred years. A series of unique mining, smelting, and minting technologies developed at Sado were disseminated to other mines throughout Japan. Today, the Sado complex of mines is on the "Tentative List" of Unesco World Heritage Sites (and much of our description is derived from the detailed article prepared for submission to Unesco). This fine map depicts the mountain town of Aikawa and its nearby port city with the government warehouses for gold, silver, and copper; the entrances to the fives mines (red dots); local rivers (especially "Muddy River") and main thoroughfares; local streets ("Miso Street," "Timber Street," "Paper Street," "Barber Street," etc.); the shipyard; gates to the mining areas; shrines and temples; storage areas for grain and rice; water removal systems for the mines; etc. The artist of this map has provided a color "key" to the features of the island and its mining activities: red dots are the entrances to the mines, orange for the … [Click Below for Full Description]

[De Bry, Theodore]
Attractive map of the Strait; it illustrates the voyages of Sebald de Weert and mostly of Oliver van Noort to South America, through the Strait of Magellan after stopping by the Patagonia and Brazil. The map is splendidly embellished with renderings of natives and penguins; the bottom contains a cartouche marking some points in the map. Versions of it were published in part IX of De Bry's Great Voyages and later in 1655 in the Newe Welt und Americanishe Historien. This map belongs to the earlier editions.

VÉNEGAS, Miguél and Andrés Marcos BURRIEL.
Eberstadt 128:156; Howes V69; JCB I, 1601; Sabin 98843; Streeter coll. IV, 2433. First edition of the French translation of one of the earliest and most important works on early California. The original Spanish edition was written by Andrés Marcos Burriel (1719-1762), a Spanish Jesuit, after memoires by Miguél Vénegas (1680-1764), who was a Jesuit as well. This French translation, by Marc Antoine Eidous, was based on the English one, and makes no mention of the Spanish authors at all. Vénegas had never actually been to California, but relied on relations of several missionaries who had been there. His book, after being edited and compiled by Burriel, became the most extensive account on Lower California of the 18th century. It contains some rare facts and details on the work of the missionaries and on the customs of the Californian inhabitants. The work was also responsible for putting an end to the myth that California was an island, which was proven when in 1746 father Ferdinand Consag led an expedition to the mouth of the Colorado River, sailing completely around the Gulf of California. An account of this voyage can be found in the third volume, which can be regarded a supplement volume to the other two and is also edited by Burriel. This supplement contains next to the relation of Consag, extracts of other works on California and Northwest Coast explorations up to 1754. A very good copy, with only some minor smudges to the half-title of volume one, and an occasional spot throughout. Binding with minor restorations, corners lightly bumped, but otherwise also very good.

KIRCHER, Athanasius
Cordier, Sinica, col. 26; Löwendahl 136 (cf. 132); cf. Merrill, Athanasius Kircher 20. First and only edition of Glazemaker's Dutch translation of China illustrata, "one of the most influential books in shaping the European conception of China in its Day" (Löwendahl), by the great Jesuit scientist Athanasius Kircher (1601/02-1680). The work is divided into six parts, the first on the inscriptions of the famous Nestorian monument (early Chinese Christian inscriptions, in Chinese and Syriac lettering), the second part gives a history of China and early Christianity, the third on idolatry in Chinese and other Asian cultures, including Indian and Japanese, the fourth describes China's government, its cities and its nature, the fifth details China's architectural and mechanical marvels and in the sixth Kircher returns to the Chinese language and the origins of its characters. Including the engraved author's portrait, often lacking. The first and last few leaves a bit frayed at the edges, some spots and a few plates and leaves slightly browned, otherwise in good condition. The binding recased and with some restorations, rubbed along the edges and three of the compartments of the spine somewhat loose. A fascinating and well-illustrated account of China, mixing fact and fiction, but bringing both to a newly eager and curious public.

GOLD & SILVER MINING AT SADO ISLAND: TWO SCROLLS
- [Japan: late 18th century - early 19th century]. A fine and complete set of scrolls concerning the famous gold and silver mines on Sado Island, illustrating all the steps from mining to refining to minting. It soon became the largest gold and silver mining site in Japan, attracting a population of well over 50,000 and it, to a very large degree, financed the Edo shogunate for several hundred years. A series of unique mining, smelting, and minting technologies developed at Sado were disseminated to other mines within Japan. Today, the Sado complex of mines is on the "Tentative List" of Unesco World Heritage Sites (and much of our description is derived from the detailed article prepared for submission to Unesco). The Aikawa mine was one of the few mines at the time to be based on kodobori (mine-digging). A series of pre-modern mine management systems and mining-related technologies ranging from mining to smelting were developed at Sado including methods for extracting gold from silver, such as the Chinese haifuki cupellation method brought in from the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine (Shimane Prefecture); the yakikin method; as well as manufacturing-based operational formats such a … [Click Below for Full Description]

SADO ISLAND GOLD & SILVER MINING SCROLL
[Japan: late 18th century - early 19th century]. This scroll is concerned with the famous gold and silver mines on Sado Island, illustrating all the steps from mining to refining of gold and silver ore. [Breton, Nicholas].
London: John Browne & John Deane, 1601 [London: Chiswick Press, 1895 for Elkin Matthews]. 16mo (16.4 cm, 6.45"). [64] pp., without the 10 preliminary pages. Scarce 19th-century facsimile printing => on vellum of a mild but reproachful plea for dignity in a heated late 16th- and early 17th-century literary quarrel. This reply to Weever's Whipping of the Satyre — itself a response to Marston's Scourge of Villanie, among other works — is generally attributed to Breton, who was one of the poets singled out for attack; the author here objects to the increasingly hostile personal abuse becoming more and more widespread among contemporary satirists.    Although without modern imprint, this volume => matches the Chiswick Press facsimile printing done for Elkin Matthews in 1895 and issued as number three in his "Isham Reprints," here without the preliminary leaves that included the editor's note.    The work is uncommon, and particularly so in this case, as the present example is => one of only five copies believed to have been printed on vellum. (The Folger Shakespeare Library's copy on vellum similarly has had the preliminary matter suppressed.)    => Searches of NUC, WorldCat, and COPAC locate only one vellum copy (Folger Library as above).    Provenance: Pencil note at rear indicating service in the stock of Quaritch Booksellers ("collated & complete, pp. B.
