De Bry, Johann Theodor.
1601. Folio (220 x 317 mm). 12 books bound in 4 volumes. With 10 engr. title pages, 252 engraved illustrations, 3 engr. views, 17 engr. maps, and 3 armorial engravings. Bound at the end are 5 extra maps and views (including a world map and a view of Jerusalem) from Marino Sanuto's 1611 "Liber secretorum fidelium crucis". Slightly later Spanish limp vellum with ms. title to spine. Ties. All twelve books of Théodore de Bry's "Petits Voyages", the greatest single collection of material on early voyages to the East Indies and considered unique in its extraordinary wealth of cartographical and visual material on Africa, India, and South Asia. Notably, book seven includes Gasparo Balbi's groundbreaking account of the Middle East, first published in 1590 as "Viaggio dell' Indie Orientali" - a mere 16 years before this present issue, making this the second appearance in print altogether and the first Latin translation. Balbi, a Venetian jewel merchant, travelled extensively in the Arabian Peninsula in search of precious stones. From Venice he sailed for Aleppo, proceeding to Bir and from there overland to Baghdad, descending the Tigris to Basra, where he embarked for India. While in the Persian Gulf, he studied the pearl industry, noting that the best pearls were to be found at Bahrain and Julfar. He refers to islands in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi (including Sir Bani Yas and Das) and to several coastal settlements that were to become permanently established, such as Dubai and Ras al Khaima. Balbi was the first to record the place names along the coast of modern Qatar, the United Arab … [Click Below for Full Description]

Porta, Giovanni Battista della
Frankfurt, Romanus Beatus' Erben, 1601. 10 Bl. 8° (18,5 x 12 cm). Ziegelrot gefärbtes Pergament der Zeit. Erste deutsche Ausgabe. - "Della Porta preceded Lavater in attempting to estimate human character by the features. This is one of the first works on the ancient 'science' of physiognomy to be extensively illustrated" (Garrison /Morton 150 zur lateinischen Erstausgabe 1586).
1601. Plate 101: Portrait of Cornelius Bentiuolius. German text on verso not referring to the plate. Etching/engraging on hand laid (verge) paper. Description: This original antique print originates from 'Der Aller durchleuchtigsten und grossmachtigen Kayser Konigen und Ertzhertzogen Fursten, wie auch Grafen, Herren von Adel'. Elaborate full-page full-length portrait plates within ornamental architectural frame, elaborate wood-engraved text borders. Editio princeps (in Latin) published in Innsbruck, 1601. Grandly illustrated Mannerist catalogue of the Heldenrustkammer of Archduke Ferdinand II of Tirol at Schloss Ambras in Innsbruck - the first collection of armor assembled on historical principles, in the first purpose-built museum north of the Alps. The Roman Catholic Archduke Ferdinand II of Tirol (1529 - 1595) was an avid collector of weaponry and armoury, that had originally belonged to all sorts of princes and potentates. He assigned his personal secretary Jacob Schrenck von Notzing to write a catalogue of the collection of armory (Heldenrustkammer) housed at Schloss Ambras near Innsbruck which finally was brought to print in 1601 only. The magnificent catalogue (known as Armamentarium heroicum) shows very rare examples of armours from the 15th and 16th centuries which originally belonged to illustrious persons such as the Emperor Maximilian I or Prince Maurice of Orange. In 1582 the Antwerp born Augsburg engraver Dominicus Custos started to engrave the 126 portraits after the drawings of Giovanni Battista Fontana. (A sa place une page de titre peinte à la main.) 1). 12 feuillets non chiffrés (Argomento, Annotazioni sopra al Pastor Fido, Le Persone che parlano, Prologo). 488 pages (ie. 486). 2). 6 feuillets. 64 pages. Quelques erreurs de numérotation sans conséquence. 6 gravures in-texte à pleine page. (20x15cm).

Artist: Bry de Theodor Dietrich ca ; issued in: Frankfurt on Main; date: ca1601 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 26 x 18; - description: Map depicts the coastal city of San Tiago on the Cap Verden islands. With decorative offshore ships in the foreground. The Cape Verde archipelago was uninhabited until the 15th century, when Portuguese explorers discovered and colonized the islands, establishing the first European settlement in the tropics. Ideally located for the Atlantic slave trade, the islands grew prosperous throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, attracting merchants, privateers, and pirates. The end of slavery in the 19th century led to economic decline and emigration. Cape Verde gradually recovered as an important commercial center and stopover for shipping routes. Incorporated as an overseas department of Portugal in 1951, the islands continued to agitate for independence, which was peacefully achieved in 1975. The islands of the Cape Verde archipelago were discovered by Genoese and Portuguese navigators around 1456. In 1462, Portuguese settlers arrived at Santiago and founded a settlement they called Ribeira Grande. In the 16th century, the archipelago prospered from the Atlantic slave trade. Pirates occasionally attacked the Portuguese settlements. Sir Francis Drake, an English corsair privateering under a letter of marque granted by the English crown, twice sacked the (then) capital Ribeira Grande in 1585 when it was a part of the Iberian Union. After a French attack in 1712, the town declined in im … [Click Below for Full Description]

WHEELER, John
Printed at London by Iohn Harison, 1601. small 4to., 125 (i.e. 126) + 2pp., complete with the terminal blank (Q4), title-page and final blank rather soiled and with a few old stains, the title-page expertly reinforced at gutter, tiny marginal wormhole affecting a single letter in B3V (p.14), occasional neat and small emphasis marks in pencil. A good, crisp, copy rebound in the late 20th century in maroon half morocco with raised bands and gilt lettering. Second printing, following the slightly earlier Middelburg first edition, also dated 1601, of this major contribution to the history of mercantilism and trade in late Elizabethan Europe. The merchant John Wheeler (d. 1617) was the highly respected multi-lingual secretary of the Company of Merchant Adventurers and A treatise on Commerce> was composed on behalf of the Merchant Adventurers in response to developments, notably the Crown's granting of freedom of trade to the Hanseatic League and an individual expose license to the Earl of Cumberland, which appeared to threaten their previously exclusive rights to regulate and organise the export cloth trade. It is at the same time the definitive source for the Company's history and a trenchant defence of late-medieval trading practices. Wheeler justifies the near monopoly practices (an accusation refuted in the text, but justifiable from an historical perspective) of the Company through arguments of economy, political stability and the safety of the realm in times of war. He 'dismissed the argument for free trade with a pious statement that a trader who loses a little bit of thi … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
