1601. Please read description & Review all photos. A Harmony Upon The Three Evangelistes Matthewe, Marke and Luke w/ The Commentarie of M. John Calvine: Faithfully Translated Out Of Latine Into English. by E. P. Printed in London 1610 John Calvin (July 1509 - 27 May 1564) a French theologian, pastor and reformer in Geneva during the Protestant Reformation. He was a principal figure in the development of the system of Christian theology later called Calvinism, aspects of which include the doctrines of predestination and of the absolute sovereignty of God in salvation of the human soul from death and eternal damnation, in which doctrines Calvin was influenced by and elaborated upon the Augustinian and other Christian traditions. Various Congregational, Reformed and Presbyterian churches, which look to Calvin as the chief expositor of their beliefs, have spread throughout the world. Calvin's authority was practically uncontested during his final years, and he enjoyed an international reputation as a reformer distinct from Martin Luther.[74] Initially, Luther and Calvin had mutual respect for each other. A doctrinal conflict had developed between Luther and Zurich reformer Huldrych Zwingli on the interpretation of the eucharist. Calvin's opinion on the issue forced Luther to place him in Zwingli's camp. Measures: 7 1/2 X 6 X 2 1/4 Thick Features: Original General Title Page w/ Beautiful Woodcut Border. Bound in a handsome bright blue late 19th century full leather binding with gilt trim and five raised hubs. The red label affixed reads "New Testament" and in gilt on the bottom of the spine reads "London 1601". Very early ownership inscription on title: "Sir Guliili Spicezy Vicar Fr. The General Title is a bit faded but clearly original with early 17th century old hand to front and verso. This copy collates according to Herbert complete and perfect with all 20ff of preliminaries and all 9pp. of supplements. This is clearly a perfect example in museum grade condition. Folio 171 x 161 Collates complete and museum quality. The Rheims New Testament was one of the versions consulted by the translators of the King James Version (the Authorized Version). The Authorized Version is distinguished from previous English Protestant versions by a greater tendency to employ Latinate vocabulary, and the translators were able to find many such terms (for example: emulation Romans 11:14) in the Rheims New Testament. Consequently, a number of the latinisms of the Douay-Rheims, through their use in the King James Bible, have entered standard literary English. The second edition of Fulke's work, first published in black letter in 1589 (Herbert 202). The arrangement of the matter is exactly the same as in the first edition. Jan David 102+ Engravings RARE
1601. I can not express the honor that I have had to even own this incredibly historic book written by Jan David, "Veridicus Christianus" 1st edition written in 1601 with over 100 original engravings. This is a very scarce and rare book that is over 400 years old and this is the only copy for sale WORLD WIDE in very good condition for its old age. The book is all here with the exception of a few removed engravings and the front cover that has separated. The spine and binding is still in solid shape with original gilt lettering bright and shinning from a early restoration or rebind. This book holds very historical weight as it is one of the earliest Christian teaching books besides obviously the Bible. This book is written in three different languages; 1. Latin, 2. French, and 3. German and they all rhyme when read . What really makes this book stand out is its over 100 original renaissance engravings that are just stunning as they depict biblical teachings containing Jesus, demons, satan, angels, skeletons, etc... The engravings are from the Renaissance period and it's quite obvious as the symbolism is exactly seen in renaissance painters like Hieronymus Bosh and Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Their are many skeletons torturing humans while their being driven in a sleigh into beasts mouth entering the gates of hell and many other very disturbing and scary images. This book was used to teach biblical doctrine using the 100+ engravings in three different languages. The brutal images were used so the common man who was being taught would take to heart what he had been exposed too. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Menghi
This 1601 exorcism book is in Good + to Very Good condition with original vellum. Top edge has the inked name of the book (see photo), there is some expected foxing and stain marks (not extensive), the initial title page is actually from part 2 of the book and a jointed glue seam is visible. The vellum cover is slightly loose/separating but is still solid in holding the leaves). The book is in surprisingly good condition considering many such manuals were actually used and handled during rites."More than a treaty of exorcism is a treaty of demonology in three books: the first dedicated to the nature and power of the devil, the second to the misdeeds of witches, and the third to remedies to prevent and cure the evil. forbidden by the Sacred Congregation in 1709." (Bibliotheca lamiarum n. 53) Menghi was considered the father of exorcists during the heyday of witchcraft, possession, and the common practice of exorcisms. Most of his exorcism books were published in Latin, but this work of his "can truly be characterized as a forerunner of modern studies on demonology, although it is still marked by the influences of medieval magic that colored works from a proceeding era. He is well acquainted with demoniacal literature" based on the author he quotes. (The Devil's Scourge, Paxia, p. 17. Paxia's book has extensive commentary and notes on Menghi and his works, including this work.)

Giovanni MAGGI (1566-1618)
Suite di 8 incisioni all'acquaforte, 1601, firmate e datate in lastra in basso. Signature of a Mr Appleton to the top of the title page. pp. [viii], 547, [1], 4to., modern calf. The most important work of Francis Godwin (1562-1633), the historian and bishop. Godwin knew and worked with William Camden, and produced his own antiquarian works in the same vein as Camden and Matthew Parker. This book attempts to compile biographies, however brief, of every bishop and archbishop ever appointed in England. 'Godwin is notably even-handed, for instance, in describing St Thomas a Becket's troubles with Henry II.[it] was unevenly researched even by the standards of the day, but it wore well over the next two centuries as a basic reference source' (ODNB). VÉNEGAS, Miguél and Andrés Marcos BURRIEL.
Eberstadt 128:156; Howes V69; JCB I, 1601; Sabin 98843; Streeter coll. IV, 2433. First edition of the French translation of one of the earliest and most important works on early California. The original Spanish edition was written by Andrés Marcos Burriel (1719-1762), a Spanish Jesuit, after memoires by Miguél Vénegas (1680-1764), who was a Jesuit as well. This French translation, by Marc Antoine Eidous, was based on the English one, and makes no mention of the Spanish authors at all. Vénegas had never actually been to California, but relied on relations of several missionaries who had been there. His book, after being edited and compiled by Burriel, became the most extensive account on Lower California of the 18th century. It contains some rare facts and details on the work of the missionaries and on the customs of the Californian inhabitants. The work was also responsible for putting an end to the myth that California was an island, which was proven when in 1746 father Ferdinand Consag led an expedition to the mouth of the Colorado River, sailing completely around the Gulf of California. An account of this voyage can be found in the third volume, which can be regarded a supplement volume to the other two and is also edited by Burriel. This supplement contains next to the relation of Consag, extracts of other works on California and Northwest Coast explorations up to 1754. A very good copy, with only some minor smudges to the half-title of volume one, and an occasional spot throughout. Binding with minor restorations, corners lightly bumped, but otherwise also very good. [ … [Click Below for Full Description]

GODELMANN, Johann Georg
1601 Godelmann MAGIC Witchcraft Sorcery Witch Torture Vampires Occult Demonology Johann Georg Godelmann was a 16th-century German scholar of demonology. In 1591, Godelmann wrote a notable treatise on magic, vampires, witches, and wizardry; a book which calls into question the punishment and sentences doled out to these convicted beings. Like many of Godelmann’s previous treatises, ‘De Magis’ appears to be an anti-witchcraft proponent; however, his books raised skepticism throughout Europe even though they encouraged witch hunts. Much of Godelmann’s own skepticism was came from his belief that Christian kings and kingdoms actually defended magical and blasphemous people. Following the release of this 1601 edition, ‘De Magis’ was placed on the Index of Prohibited Books for its representation of witchcraft and dealing with witches. According to Robbins’ ‘Encyclopedia of Witchcraft and Demonology’, “Godelmann tried, without success, to distinguish various kinds of witches, some guilty, holding that those most often executed were simply foolish and deluded old women. At that period, although completely credulous, his opinions were more enlightened than those generally accepted. Godelmann nullified them, however, by admitting the power of the Devil, the existence of witches, and the reality of the pact. While their stories of sabbat and incubi resulted from delusions sent by the devil and from the hallucinatory effects of their ointments, yet witches could work maleficia. Godelmann's sentimental defense of the harmless old crone could not protect her when judges held delusions eq … [Click Below for Full Description]
