True hardcover first edition. Ernest Callenbach. Banyan Tree Books hardcover in dustjacket. Presumed ex library copy as there is a stamp that says C 4 in small neat letters on a lower interior page. Cut (missing) front flyleaf page. Back hinge is broken. Green cloth has tape residue and minor rubbing. A merely good as-is copy of a book of which few copies survived if the true first edition because it was very poorly bound. So an as-is copy of a truly scarce first edition . Mattheus QUAD
Colonia, 1600. Important early map of the North Polar regions, based upon Mercator's map of 1595. The North Pole is shown according to legend as a large rock in a giant whirlpool and surrounded by four islands that are separated by rivers. The magnetic north is depicted as a separate island rock just outside the polar mass. In North America is an very early reference to California (California regio, sola fama Hispanis nota), curiously shown north of the El streto de Anian. The map depicts the attempts of Frobisher and Davis to locate the northern passages to Asia. The map image is surrounded by a floral design with four roundels in each corner. These contain the title, the Faeroe Isles, the Shetland Isles, and the mythical island of Frisland. Burden, P.D. 134; Meurer, P.H. (Cologne) Qua 79 280 220mm

Rara." "Striking example of Quad's map of North America, based upon De Jode's landmark map of 1593. Jode's map is one of the earliest maps to concentrate on North America alone. Quad here continues the mistake of placing the nomenclature of Virginia too far north. A long narrow waterway to the north represents the North West Passage; Lago de Conibas is also indicated. Some names have been surprisingly left out, notably Bermuda, St. Augustine, Roanoke and Chesapeake. A curious ‘second’ peninsula is shown to the west of Florida which could be an early depiction of the Mississippi delta. The descriptive text below provides a brief overview of the history of North America to date. The map is taken from "Geographisch Handtbuch . Matthis Quaden ", German edition published in Colgne, 1600. Copperplate, very good condition." Burden 133; Cumming 24 295 230mm

EYLEND, MARTIN.
, . . VD17, 23:287401X (3 copies); Jähns, pp. 1105-1106 note; not in Cockle; Sloos. Rare second(?) edition, in the original German, of a brief compendious handbook of fortification following the Dutch methods and tactics. In the years 1600 to 1625, the Dutch Prince of Orange, Maurits van Nassau (1567-1625), proved the efficacy of the new Dutch ideas and techniques in fortification and siege warfare in the Eighty Years' War against Spain. With the German States now embroiled in the hostilities that spread to other parts of Europe as the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), there was a great practical interest in these new methods. While foreign authors were beginning to incorporate Dutch methods in their manuals, these tended to be up-market works, out of the reach of the common soldier or even many officers, and they also failed to keep up with the rapidly developing Dutch art of fortification. The present cheap compendium, indifferently printed on coarse paper, gives a much better idea of what common soldiers, lower-level officers and the interested general public would have learned about the new Dutch art of fortification than the great works by famous authors.Title-page and last page browned and the former also has a small stain, otherwise in very good condition. A fortification handbook for the common man, rare in all editions.

Georgette De Montenay
Not Stated, 1600. A very scarce edition of Georgette de Montenay's 'Emblemes ou Devises Chrestiennes'. 'Emblemes' contains one-hundred emblems, which are typically morals or poems accompanied by illustrations, a form of religious text that was very popular during the 16th and 17th centuries. Montenay's 'Emblemes' are mostly Protestant in their views. An undated copy. ESTC and Copac only have records of the 1619 polygot edition, which differs to this copy in pagination and translation content. The 1619 edition is ESTC record no. S94206. This copy is lacking the title page (A1) and leaves F3 and F4. 1619 edition has a preface and a riddle to the rear, of which this copy is potentially lacking but there is no evidence to the gatherings that this printing had the preface. When collated using the catch-words this copy is lacking pages one, four, twenty-eight, twenty-nine, seventy-four, seventy-eight, seventy-nine, eighty, eighty-one, eighty-two, eighty-five, eighty-six, eighty-nine, ninety-five, and ninety-six. Closed tears to the fore edge of pages twenty, forty, and forty-one. It's unclear when the 'Emblemes' were first published, as there's been evidence of copies existing as early as 1561, despite it being originally thought to have appeared in publication in 1571. It is possible that, due to the religious turmoil at the time, the publication was delayed. The turmoil in question was the French Wars of Religion between the Roman Catholics and Huguenots between 1562 and 1598. Montenay herself was of the Reformed/Calvinist faith. 'The first major English scientific treatise based on experimental methods of research. Gilbert was chiefly concerned with magnetism; but as a digression he discusses in his second book the attractive effect of amber (electrum), and thus may be regarded as the founder of electrical science. He coined the terms electricity, electric force, and electric attraction. His versorium, a short needle balanced on a sharp point to enable it to move freely, is the first instrument designed for the study of electrical phenomena, serving both as an electroscope and electrometer. He contended that the earth was one great magnet; he distinguished magnetic mass from weight; and he worked on the application of terrestrial magnetism to navigation. ARROWSMITH, Aaron
1600 by 1300mm (63 by 51.25 inches).. Large engraved map, on six sheets joined as three, fine original outline hand-colour, paste over extension sheet to upper margin. A landmark map in the charting of the American West. Arrowsmith first published his map in 1795 and by constantly issuing updated versions, as new information became available, he ensured that the map retained its reputation as the best general map for the American West. It was the 1802 edition that was used by Lewis & Clark to plan their own expedition of 1805-06; and the map's 1814 edition is justlty famed as the first large scale map to incorporate their discoveries. It has been noted that the map is a great deal more accurate than the one published to accompany the first edition of Lewis & Clark's travels. This is due to Arrowsmith drawing on numerous sources most notably from new information from the British explorer David Thompson - whose information helped greatly with the delineation of the Columbia river - and that of the Hudson Bay Company. The map also extends some way south to include the Gulf of Mexico; the information of which was taken from the works of Zebulon Pike and Humboldt. The revisions would continue with the present 1819 edition of the map drawing on the latest American maps including those of Darby and Melish. Rumsey 32 ; Stevens & Tree, 'Comparative Cartography', 48(f), in Tooley, The Mapping of America.

Cent Emblemes Christiens De Damoiselle Georgette De Montenay
1600. Montenay was taken into the court of Jeanne d'Albret, the Qu … [Click Below for Full Description]

[SCHUYL, Florens (ed. Urban SCHRÖTTER)].
Bircher, Barock 1600-1720, B14340; KVK & WorldCat (3 copies); VD17, 23:691814K (1, the same, copy); cf. Pritzel 8519. Very rare first and only Schrötter edition, with the text in Latin and German on facing pages, of an alphabetical catalogue of about 1500 plants in the botanical garden of Leiden University, with an appendix listing about 300 plants native to Leiden, first prepared by Florens Schuyl and published in Latin by Johan Elzevier in 1668.Though clearly based on Vorstius's catalogue, which the Elzeviers had published in 1636, Schuyl's catalogue expands the list considerably, including for the first time South African plants. It also includes the date palm and some Far Eastern plants. Urban Schrötter, court gardener at the botanical garden of the Prince Bishops of Eichstätt, apparently saw this edition through the press. The present edition appears to be the only work listing Schrötter as publisher, so he may have been more editor than publisher in the normal sense. With an erroneous manuscript attribution to Gottschalk on the title-page and date 1697. In very good condition. The binding is somewhat worn but still good. Very rare Latin and German edition of Schuyl's catalogue of plants at the Leiden University botanical garden.

Fukien, China: Yeh Nan-sung-t'ang, 1600. Four volumes in two, stab-bound in contemporary Korean paper covers, resewn, minor worming, very good in a cloth folding case. Zhu Xi (1130-200) was a Song Dynasty scholar who championed the importance of the Four Books (Analects, the Mencius, the Great Learning, and the Doctrine of the Mean) in Chinese philosophy during a time where the I Ching (Book of Changes) was considered the most important text. His heavily annotated editions of each became standard texts after his death. This copy of the I Ching was printed later in the Ming dynasty, and contains a colophon in the form of a cartouche in the back, indicating the name and place of its publisher.

Montenay was taken into the court of Jeanne d'Al … [Click Below for Full Description]
