Gli Adagia rappresentano una sorta di manifesto umanistico, finalizzato al superamento della filosofia medievale attraverso l'esercizio storico-filologico. "A riprova dell'arditezza intellettuale che Erasmo dispiega nei sei proverbi lunghi del 1515 vale anche la durezza con la quale la censura intervenne su di essi. Non potendo fare a meno degli Adagia come repertorio di erudizione e di cultura classica, l'Italia post-tridentina decise di rielaborarli a proprio uso e consumo. Ad avallare l'erudizione espurgata e quasi ad assumerne la paternità, - il nome del vero autore doveva sprofondare nell'oblio, insieme con tutti quegli eretici e luterani ai quali veniva allora accomunato - fu chiamato Paolo Manuzio.... questa metamorfosi dell'editore del 1508 nel censore del 1585 (o complice di censori) sintetizza efficacemente la parabola che la cultura italiana percorse durante il Cinquecento" (cfr. Hamelmann's Chronicon is the first book to be printed in Oldenburg (Brunet) and it is the historical source work for the "House of Oldenburg" whose descendents became kings of Denmark and emperors of Russia. Two Hemispheres on the upper right and left corner showing the Northpole and Holyland.; - vita of the artist: Abraham Ortelius(1527 ?1598) was a Flemish cartographer and geographer, generally recognized as the creator of the first modern atlas, and the first to imagine that the continents were joint together before drifting to their present position.He began as a map-engraver, in 1547 and entered the Antwerp guild of St Luke as afsetter van Karten. His early career is that of a businessman and most of his journeys before 1560 are for commercial purposes. In 1564 he completed a "mappemonde", eight-leaved map of the world, which afterwards appeared in reduced form in the Theatrum. The only extant copy of this great map is in the library of the University of Basle (cf. Bernoulli, Ein Karteninkunabelnband, Basle, 1905, p. 5). He also published a two-sheet map of Egypt in 1565, a plan of the Brittenburg castle on the coast of the Netherlands in 1568, an eight-sheet map of Asia in 1567, and a six-sheet map of Spain before the appearance of his atlas. Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. In 1573 Ortelius published seventeen supplementary maps under the title Additamentum Theatri Orbis Terrarum. Four more Additamenta were to follow, the last one appearing in 1597. This incredible c. 1599 map by Jan Huyghen van Linschoten Arabia and Southeast Asia extends from Cyprus and eastern Africa eastward to the mouth of the Ganges and the northern tip of Sumatra. Like many maps by Linschoten, this map is based on 16th century Portuguese Portolan charts and is significant for its representation of the Arabian Peninsula and the Persian Gulf. The outline is far more accurate that any earlier map. Considered to be the one of the first detailed navigational charts of the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea, the map beautifully depicts various coastal features including the banks around the Maldives and near the shores of India and the Red Sea, as well as the oyster beds near Qatar. The interiors include several interesting vignettes depicting animals, while a sea monster and ships are seen in the ocean. Two elaborately ornate cartouches in the top right include the description of the map. A large compass rose is also included near the center. The map is in good condition with minor wear along the original fold lines and minor foxing. Jan Huyghen van Linschoten (1563 - 1611) was a Dutch historian and merchant who travelled extensively and was also the Secretary to the Portuguese Archbishop of Goa in India (at the time an important commercial and political center for the Portuguese Empire) from 1583 to 1589. Also known as 'one of the pathfinders for the first Dutch voyages to the East', his book "Itinerario: Voyage ofte schipvaert van Jan Huyghen van Linschoten naar Oost ofte Portugaels Indien", was one of the most important works for nearly a century and a copy of the book was believed to be given to every ship sailing to India as a sailing manual. This map is an important example of his work.

Uncommon festival book commemoration of Pope Clement VIII's ceremonial entrance into Bologna in 1598, depicting the arches and other architectural features designed by the celebrated painter Guido Reni for the pope's visit. The five full-page images were copper-engraved from Reni's vividly rendered sketches of his own designs, with an additional vignette of the arms of Bologna on the title-page and Benacci's printer's device on the final page. Complete copies of this work are seldom encountered and, while the present example is lacking signature C (including four plates), it still offers => five lively, engaging views of significant architectural, artistic, and Catholic interest. This is the second edition, following the first of the previous year.    Evidence of readership: Six pages towards the end of the work bear marginal notes in early, neatly inked Italian.    Provenance: From the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel (“AHA”) at rear.         Brunet, I, 768 (for 1598 ed.); Cicognara, I, 1402 (for 1598 ed.); EDIT16 CNCE 5106; Mortimer, Italian 16th Century Books, 50. 18th-century mottled calf, framed and panelled in blind with blind-tooled corner fleurons, spine with gilt-stamped title and board edges with blind roll; leather almost entirely sueded.         Two manuscript estate indentures relating to Hawkins's property at Chatham, established as a Royal Dockyard in 1567. Signed by Sir John Hawkins and Dame Margaret Hawkins respectively.

      Chatham, Kent: 1582 & 1599 - 2 sheets vellum, folio (measuring 424 x 569 mm and 335 x 503 mm respectively). Manuscript in an English secretary hand. Both with wax seals on vellum tags, that of 1582 bearing Hawkins's "merchant's mark" and that of 1599 his arms (sable on a point wavy, a lion passant or, in chief three bezants, crest, a demi Moor in his proper colour, bound and captive, with annulets in his arms and ears). Prickings visible along left margin (made as a guide for ruling the sheets). Creased where folded, only light soiling, seal on document of 1599 partially cracked but whole, overall both indentures in excellent condition. A superb example of the signature of one of the great sailors of Elizabethan England, the first document showing him acquiring land at Chatham, established as a Royal Dockyard by Elizabeth I in 1567. Sir John Hawkins (1532-1595), merchant, privateer and naval commander, was cousin to Sir Francis Drake "but [Hawkins] arguably knew more about seamanship and did more for his country than Drake. During several voyages in the 1560s Hawkins demonstrated to his countrymen that good profits could be made trading in the Spanish ports of the West Indies. He also introduced his queen and his fellow merchants to the loathsome business of slave trading, where even greater profits could be made by men whose consciences were not of exceeding tenderness" (Harry Kelsey, Sir John Hawkins: Queen Elizabeth's Slave Trader, Yale 2003, p. xiii). Hawkins played a pivotal role in the slave trade, proving "the possibility of extending the long-established English triangular trade via Guinea to Brazil - in which his father had taken a pioneering role thirty years earlier - to a new, and readily available commodity, namely African slaves, and to a new Caribbean destination, where Spanish colonists welcomed slaves as an important constituent element in their internal economy - a valuable, harder-working, and longer-living antidote to the chronic wastage of the aboriginal population, and furnished more cheaply than their own compatriots managed via Seville" (ODNB). The earlier of the two indentures is dated 22 January 1582, signed "John Hawkyns", and bears his wax seal: with this document William Barnes of Chatham (a "chief master" - or captain - in Elizabeth's navy), conveys to Sir John Hawkins of London, then treasurer of the navy, a house, storehouse, two yards, an adjoining garden near Chatham Street, together with a section of land called "The Quay" and some marshlands both belonging to St. Bartholomew's Hospital, altogether procured for £100. The document further mentions a bond in £160 for quiet possession of the house by Peter Hills of Rotherhithe in Surrey, yeoman, to William Barnes (30 January 1577), and recites the lease made 15 October 1545 for The Quay and marsh by George Bowne, master of St. Batholomew's Hospital in Kent, to Walter Hayte of Rochester, tailor, for 99 years, which was by 1582 vested in William Barnes. The witnesses are listed as Walter Portryff, Thomas Maynerd and Miles Toogye. The attached red wax seal bears a fine impression of Hawkins' "merchant's mark" - the design appearing to incorporate a hawk's talon, presumably a play on his name - and a fine example of his signature. In the most famous portrait of Hawkins, at the National Maritime Museum, Hawkins is pictured holding a seal on a ring but close inspection shows that it is not the same as either of the two seals used on these documents. William Barnes would have been well known to Hawkins as he was one of two "chief masters" - the other being Thomas Gray - of the group appointed by Elizabeth to the special investigation commission that was looking into the state of the navy. ODNB records that "Hawkins bought a house in Deptford, and soon afterwards another in the city, in the parish of St Dunstan-in-the-East, which he retained for the remainder of his life" but would presumably also have had lodgings at Chatham while he oversaw the fitting-out of ships.       London, printed by the Deputies of Christopher Barker, printer to the Queenes most excellent Maiestie, 1599.. and other things of great importance. 1599. 4to, approximately 215 x 160 mm, 8½ x 6¼ inches, engraved pictorial general title page with title within heart shaped centre enclosed by block border with symbols of the twelve tribes in order of age to the left, the twelve apostles to the right and an evangelist at each inner corner, Matthew and Mark above, separated by a dove, and Luke and John below, separated by a lamb, general letterpress title with small woodcut of Crossing the Red Sea, dated 1599, divisional title page to Second Part of Old Testament, New Testament engraved title page with same border of tribes and apostles, dated 1599, maps and illustrations in the text of the Old Testament, plus 1 map in the New (The Printer to the Diligent Reader, with a map of the Holy Land to the verso), leaves numbered on rectos only: (4), 1-190, Genesis to Job; 1-127 Psalms to Malachi; (2), 3-121 New Testament; First and Second tables, dated 1599, Metrical Psalms (with title page but no imprint), followed by A Forme of Prayers and a Table for the number of Psalmes, pages (10), 93, (11). Bound in full mottled calf, expertly rebacked with original gilt ruled spine laid on, preserving gilt lettered morocco label, original endpapers. New leather visible at top and bottom of spine and hinges, neat small repairs to corners, couple of very small scrapes to covers, 2 small dark stains to first engraved title, 1 to margin, 1 to lower inner corner affecting edge of 1 image, occasional small stains to text and margins, not affecting legibility, mostly very clean, small closed tear to lower edge of 4th leaf of prelims, neatly repaired, on verso of 4th leaf the references to the Apocrypha and its books have been crossed through in old ink (Apocrypha not present ), very small chip to edge of 2 margins 1 with slight loss to sidenote, another to 1 lower corner with slight loss to sidenote, some upper margins trimmed, some fore-edges also, very close to sidenotes, all still legible, a little pale ink marking on 2 illustrations, a few pages very lightly age-browned, occasional very pale stain to lower half of pages, old scribble to blank margin of divisional title page, chapters of N. T. numbered in pale ink, inscription on blank opposite first page of Table and on blank verso of title to Metrical Psalms, a note at the end of the Table, note in margin of final page (Table) all in old ink, last page has paper repair to tear in lower margin, pale age-browning throughout and occasional pale brown spots and a few very pale stains. Binding tight and firm. A very good complete copy. Geneva version with Tomson's N. T. , but with Francis Junius' Revelation. There are many editions with the date 1599. Ours is probably the earliest as it "abounds more than any others in gross errors: Song of Solomon v. 3, defile for put; Isaiah xxx. 32, beards for harps; xxxvi. 12, thing for dung". There is no Apocrypha in this copy, "the section containing the Apocrypha, though included in the list of books, was apparently omitted from all except a few copies. These Bibles were printed probably for English use in the Low Countries ... Perhaps printed at Amsterdam about 1599".
