Orlando Malavolti (Siena 1515 - 1596)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Francesco VILLAMENA (Assisi, 1564 - Roma, 7 Luglio 1624)
Bulino, 1597 -1599, in basso al centro "Anibal Caracius Invent. F. Villamena. [Click Below for Full Description]

Rebuffi, Pierre, 1487-1557
Apud Haeredes Gulielmi Rovillii (Guillaume Rouille, 1599. Hardcover. Large folio. 3 volumes in one. A-Az6 AA-EE6 FF8 GG-III6 KKK8 (including Dd6 and KKK8, both blanks), COMPLETE. 952 + 60 ff. Contemporary marbled boards, spine of tawed sheepskin, sprinkled edges (somewhat worn). Very good. ¶ Revised and enlarged edition. ¶ In Julian Franklin's opinion, Rebuffi exemplifies a phase in French political thought when "the constitutionalist interpretation of the powers of the King was not so much denied as tactfully passed over." Quentin Skinner describes Rebuffi as "the outstanding legist" of a generation "beginning to write in an almost unyielding style." Questions arising from royal legislative acts drew from Rebuffi the "Commentaria in constitutiones seu ordinationes regias" which he dedicated in 1549 to the Chancellor Francois Oliver. Few of his contemporaries could match the depth of this volume, and fewer still its scope, which encompassed some of the most vexed and sensitive legal questions of the day. * Rebuffi (Montpellier 1487 - Paris 1557) was one of the most famous legal scholars of his day. After teaching law at Toulouse, Cahors and Bourges, he was appointed professor of Canon Law by Francois I. In the present edition, the various parts each have a special title page, although the pagination and register are continuous: Tractatus de litteris obligatoriis regio sigillo, Tractatus de chirographorum and cedularum recognitione, Tractatus de sententiis praejudicialibus, De sententiis executoriis, De evocationibus utilis, De litteris civilibus, De supplicationibus. [Raleigh, Sir Walter; Guayana] [De Bry, Theodore].
1599. Amsterdam. Theodore De Bry. Trimmed at left margin, just inside neatline. Expertly restored. 444 x 342 mm.- The search for El Dorado, the mythical city of Gold in South America, needs nointroduction. The present map is the earliest obtainable map based upon the information drawn from source information provided by English sources familiar with the manuscript maps and accounts brought back to America by Walter Raleigh, Lawrence Keymis and William Downe. The map appeared in Theodore De Bry's Americae pars VIII, accounting the English Voyages in America led by Sir Francis Drake, Thomas Cavendish and Sir Walter Raleigh. The map is based upon (and preceded by) a mapengraved by Jodocus Hondius after his return to Amsterdam. The exact source of Hondius's information has always been somewhat of a mystery. Synthesized from the Raleigh sponsored expeditions of 1594-1596, the answer to the question of how this seemingly secret information flowed from London to Amsterdam has never been fully explained. As noted in greater detail below, we believe that the best evidence supports the transmission of certain "draughts" (maps) which were made by William Downe, the second in command on expedition of 1596, either directly or indirectly to Jodocus Hondius. As noted below, Downe was known to have created his own manuscript set of maps and descriptions of the voyage and was believed to have been selling these in late 1596, until the agents of Lord Cecil, at the behest of Thomas Hariot, had the materials seized from Downe. This information is most strongly supported by the exp … [Click Below for Full Description]

LUIS DE MONTOIA, Frei].
, . . A report giving advice on preserving the King of Portugal's territories in the "Pegu" (Bago) Empire in southern Burma, now part of Myanmar, and Portugal's trade and commerce there. The Portuguese conquered these territories in 1599/1600, with the city of Pegu as its capital, and kept a strong presence there even after the capital moved to Ava in 1634. Two notes on the back of the last page indicate that the document was copied from the papers of "Fr Luis", meaning Frei Luis de Montoia. It includes information on the role of Felipe Mascarenhas, Governor of Ceylon 1630-1631 & 1640-1645, who was in Pegu in the 1630s and was to serve as Viceroy of Portuguese India 1645-1651.Two wormholes at the foot of the first leaf, not affecting any text, otherwise in very good condition.

Boeckel, Jan van.
Hamburg Möller, 1599. (19 x 15 cm). 18 nn. Bll. [Click Below for Full Description]

Printed just 39 years after the very first complete English version of the first Geneva Bible. It is one of only a few extremely rare Bibles printed in the 1500's to have survived the centuries. This is an excellent example of a 1500's Bible and of course with virtually anything of this age it is incomplete. While not having checked every page it does appear to be mostly complete in the New Testament. It does end in Revelations chapter 22. That is followed by a first and second Table which is entitled a brief Table of the interpretation of the proper names. The Old Testament starts with Exodus chapter 13. While it is incomplete, it is extraordinarily rare to find a Bible in the 1500's in any condition much less completely rebound with damaged pages mostly repaired. Pictures above show this. Another unusually rare part to this Bible is the type print itself. While most Geneva Bibles were printed in blackletter, this particular is an early example of roman typeface. Very unique to this time period. It measures 9" x 7 1/4 " x 1 3/4" and weighs in at a little over 2 pounds. This is a Quarto Bible which in the 1500's would make it a family Bible. It is of course used and does show the expected wear and tear associated with its age. … [Click Below for Full Description]

LINSCHOTEN, Jan Huygen van
Alberti Henrici, 1599. Printed in Den Haag. Folio, contemporary vellum. Two parts in one volume. First Latin Edition. Engraved title, full-page author portrait, 36 engraved plates (all double-page or folding) and 7 folding engraved maps. Rare first Latin edition of the explorer, merchant, and historian Jan Huygen van Linschoten's (1553-1611) famous travel book, an account rich in information concerning the Dutch expansion in the East Indies and here richly illustrated with the same 36 engraved plates and 5 engraved maps of the Dutch first edition (1596), the important world map of Plancius, and the celebrated - and often missing - first edition of Willem Barentsz's (1550-97) iconic polar map. "This edition of Linschoten is the only one in which Barentsz's famous map of the North Polar Regions appears. For some reason or other, possibly on account of the size and thick paper on which it was engraved, this map of Barentsz is nearly always lacking in otherwise perfect copies of this work" (Humphreys, p. ix). The map is considered the "first contribution of the Dutch cartography related to the Arctic Seas" and here illustrates a unique digest - not found outside this edition of Linschoten - of Gerrit de Veer's diary concerning Barentsz's three arctic journeys, a digest likely compiled and translated from the Dutch by Linschoten himself who accompanied Barentsz on two of his Arctic voyages. The Barentsz map is the first of the Arctic based upon first-hand exploration, and which dispenses with the mythological arctic islands of Mercator. Barentsz sailed further north towards the … [Click Below for Full Description]

REBUFFI, Pierre
Lugduni : Apud Hæredes Gulielmi Rouillii ., M.D. XCIX. 1599. 1599 LAW Commentary on Constitutions French Roman Juris Civilis Pierre Rebuffi The ‘Institutes of Justinian’ is a portion of the full Corpus Juris Civilis, largely based on the Institutes of Gaius. Justinian sought to reform Roman law and education. This work was originally intended to be used by law students, but they were not solely used as a textbook, they actually carried legal weight as law! These institutes have been edited with commentary for decades, some more popular than others, but Pierre Rebuffi’s is a highly important late 16th-century edition. Rebuffi was a French jurist who was perhaps the most famous legal scholar of his day. He is most remembered for his ‘Commentary on the Constitutions’ which is a collection of various titles on Roman Law – • ‘Tractatus de litteris obligatoriis regio sigillo’ • ‘Tractatus de chirographorum and cedularum recognitione’ • ‘Tractatus de sententiis praejudicialibus’ • ‘De sententiis executoriis’ • ‘De evocationibus utilis’ • ‘De litteris civilibus’ • ‘De supplicationibus’ This 1599 edition features Royal ordinances printed completely in French, as Rebuffi’s commentaries appear in Latin. A fascinating late 16th-century edition! Item number: #4908 Price: $599 REBUFFI, Pierre Commentaria in constitutiones, seu ordinationes regias. : Non solum iuris studiosis, verum etiam pragmaticis vtilissima, in quibus facilis ad praxim Curiarum Franciæ via, & iurium intellectus explicantur Lugduni : Apud Hæredes Gulielmi Rouillii ., M.D. XCIX. 1599.
