Our collation has gathering Z in 4 leaves, Adams is in 2 leaves, and our collation does not have 2 leaves after Nnnn4, which are found in Adams. BIBLE. Old Testament. Polyglot. 1599
Nürnberg: [A.P. Dietrich] for Elias Hutter, 1599. Contemporary blind-tooled and gilt pigskin over thick beveled wooden boards (rubbed), outer frame of two impressions of an acanthus-leaf roll, inner frame of an elegant vine-and-foliage roll, central rectangle with an effaced circular stamp in a large lozenge with gilt fleurons, above and below a small bird, front panel dated 1620 in gilt, brass catches and clasps, early manuscript spine title, dark blue edges. How are you fixed for Protestant Hexaglot Octateuchs? Look no further....            Professor of Hebrew, a gifted Orientalist, private language tutor to the Elector of Saxony, itinerant printer, publisher and bookseller, Elias Hutter (1553-c. 1605) sought to spread the knowledge of sacred languages and to make Scripture accessible in numerous translations, both ancient and modern, for private philological study. He owned several fonts of Oriental types, and, with the initial backing of the Nürnberg City Council, he undertook to publish a complete Polyglot Old Testament. He began with this six-language Octateuch (the Pentateuch, Joshua, Judges and Ruth) in four variant printings.           In each variant, the verso and facing recto have six columns of text. The first five are identical and present the text in Chaldaic (or Syriac), Hebrew, Greek, Latin and German. The difference among the variants is in the sixth column, which is in one of four languages: Slovenian, Low German, Italian or French. Hutter clearly had ambitious plans for his Old Testament, but after the City Council withdrew its patronage, his busi … [Click Below for Full Description]

[VIEW - NETHERLANDS - AMSTERDAM]. BAST, Pieter.
Amstelredam.[Antwerp], Pieter Bast, 1599. Large engraved panorama on 2 sheets (ca. 27 x 76 cm as assembled). Framed. Rare first state of a 16th-century view of Amsterdam as seen from the inlet known as the IJ made by Pieter Bast, a Dutch engraver from Antwerp best known for his city map of Amsterdam and this view. "In its amplitude and the sheer audacity of the presentation, this engraving is indisputably one of Bast's most significant creations. It is as much a portrait of the harbour of Amsterdam as of the city itself and underscores the unique importance of maritime trade as the principle source of the city's wealth and power". With its distinctive orientation he not only initiated the series of representations of Amsterdam as seen from the IJ, but also "established the standard for an entire genre of Dutch maritime painting" (Keyes). In 1611 a second state (edition) was published by Claesz Jansz. Visscher, who drastically altered the composition. In very good condition. Hollstein I, p. 168, 8; Keyes, Pieter Bast 8 and p. 19.

Arien[sis]". Rebacked with the original backstrip laid down. [4], 382, [15], [1 blank] pp. First edition of a collection of 15 classical and mediaeval school texts on the art of rhetoric, in a rare 16th-century French prize binding from Aire-sur- la-Lys, in the French department Pas-de Calais, on the border of French Flanders and Artois. Although most of these works had been published before in some form, the present collection was based on an unpublished manuscript. It therefore provided an independent source for these works as well as bringing them together in one convenient volume for students. The manuscripts edited here came from the library of the celebrated French lawyer, humanist and scholar François Pithou (1543-1621), a pupil of Cujas and later attorney-general at Troyes. He is believed to have edited the texts himself for the present publication. With 2 owners' names and 2 bookplates. Mid 19th-century mottled, tanned sheepskin (cat's paw pattern), richly gold-tooled spine. 141, [1] pp. First edition of Georgius Dousa's (1574-1599) own account of his visit to Constantinople (Istanbul) in 1597 and 1598, the main text in the form of a letter he wrote soon after to his father Janus Dousa, rector of Leiden University, supplemented with a few earlier letters (for example, from Meletius Pegas (1549-1601), then Eastern Orthodox patriarch of Constantinople) and Dousa's renditions of 25 Greek and Latin inscriptions that he saw there. He frequently gives the Turkish names of things or people he saw, or quotes what Turkish speakers said to him, rendering the Turkish in both Arabic type and transcribed with the Latin alphabet. The Italian presses concentrated on missionary printing and other publications spreading the Roman Catholic faith, but the Leiden Arabists, though devote Protestant Christians, appreciated Arabic scholarship and wished to learn from it. The elder Franciscus Raphelengius, who married one of Christoffel Plantin's daughters and took charge of his Leiden printing office when Plantin returned to Antwerp in 1585, became one of the leading European Arabic scholars of his day. His naskh Arabic type became the staple of early scholarly printing in Arabic and the o … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Antiqui rhetores Latini.] ... Omnia ex codd. manusc. emendatiora vel auctiora. Paris, Adrien Périer (ex officina Plantiniana), 1599. Large 4to. Set in roman types with incidental italic, Greek and Hebrew. Contemporary gold-tooled calf with 18th-century restorations, with the arms of Aire-sur-la-Lys (an eagle) flanked by "S.P.Q. ... In very good condition and only slightly trimmed, leaving generous margins, with marginal water stains in a few leaves, reaching the text in 1 quire. Binding rebacked, with the original backstrip laid down, slightly rubbed and with superficial cracks, traces of 2 pair of leather ties. In 1779 he was made secretary of the French legation to the United States. In 1780, Barbe-Marbois sent a questionnaire to the governors of all 13 former American colonies, seeking information about each state's geography, natural resources, history, and government. Thomas Jefferson, who was then finishing his final term as Virginia's governor, responded to this query with a manuscript that later became his famous "Notes on the State of Virginia". Barbe-Marbois was elected a Foreign Honorary Member to both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society in 1781. When the minister Chevalier de la Luzerne returned to France in 1783, Barbe-Marbois remained in America as charge d'affaires in 1784. That year he married Elizabeth Moore (1765-1834), the daughter of William Moore, former governor of Pennsylvania.
Hutter clearly had ambitious plans for his Old Testament, but after the City Council withdrew its patronage, his business failed and he fle … [Click Below for Full Description]

Venecia, 1599. Del Hispania nova tabvla. Della Spagna. Seconda nvova tavola dEvropa. (To accompany) La geografia di Claudio Tolomeo Alessandrino, nuouamente tradotta di Greco in Italiano, da Girolamo Ruscelli . In Venetia, Appresso Vincenzo Valgrisi, M.D.LXI. [Click Below for Full Description]

Its effect was both immediate and permanent, becoming "the basis for the later seventeenth-century treatises of which Michael Dalton's Countrey Iustice, 1618 was the most famous" (Putnam, Early Treatises, Vol. VII, 218 p.). Blackstone himself recommended the book to his students in the late 18th century declaring "he will everything relative to [the office of the Justice of Peace] both in ancient and modern practice, collected with great care and accuracy, and disposed in a most clear and judicious method" (Comm, i., 354).

1599. 21.4 x 14.3 cm. Executed in red chalk. A compelling 16th century study of a damned soul and a skeleton(verso). Some discoloration at the top portion of drawing. Minor marks elsewhere. Overall Very Good. Partially mounted on modern paper. A seemingly Florentine inspired design evocative of skeletal studies done by the likes of Alessandro Allori(1535-1607). The paper has a watermark of a bird in a shield found on Neapolitan paper from the first half of the 16th century. *** A rather mesmerizing and emotive work of art that leaves one in contemplative awe. Theodore de Bry
This book (America Pars VII), published in 1599, is the first Latin edition of Ulrich Schmidel's trip to Brazil. Schmidel was a German-born traveler and chronicler, who published his German travel account in Frankfurt in 1567. In this work, he narrates his participation in the conquest and colonization of the Paraná River basin over the twenty years he remained in Brazil, making one of the first chronicles of the inhabitants and territories of that region. After the publication of 1567, in the German language, in 1599 this first Latin edition was published, by Theodore De Bry. THEODORE DE BRY. Americae pars VII. Dedicated to the account of Ulrico Schmidl, the seventh volume of the collection26 was published in German in the year 159727, shortly before Theodore de Bry28 died. In it, the Bavarian soldier, who remained for almost two decades in America (1536 - 1553), describes the first contacts of Europeans with nature and indigenous peoples of the southern region of the new continent.
