MARCONVILLE, Jean De
Rouen / A Roven , Chez Nicolas Hamillon , 1599.

Paolo Paruta,
Domenico Nicolini,, Venitia, 1599. [Click Below for Full Description]

1599 Bible with THE WHOLE BOOK OF PSALMS dated 1641...Past restoration (beautiful). Covers firmly attached, no loose pages. This Bible is an exceptional piece of history...421 YEARS OLD!! 8 7/8" tall X 7" wide and 2 1/8" thick. Printing date of 1599 on Old and New Testament title pages. THE WHOLE BOOK OF PSALMS dated 1641 was bound to the rear. It's had past professional restoration with a new leather spine and covers from a previous (probably 19th century) restoration. Covers are firmly attached and open and close easily, no loose pages. Pages are thick, almost like cloth. "P : I" is gilded on both covers. After going through this Bible numerous times, two worst flaws I found are shown in the 10th picture. The page with margin section missing is in S. John (scripture is not affected), page with repairs is in Revelation. Numerous pages were professionally repaired and/or reinforced with new borders, I'm thinking the one in S. John was overlooked. Front blank page has the name Elizabeth Vickerman hand written in and dated 1794, same name hand written in on the title page (2nd. picture). Beautiful piece of history. Chances like this don't come by too often. Free shipping to lower 48 states via insured Media Mail.

PERCEVAL, Richard; & John Minsheu.
London: by Edm. Bollifant, , 1599. Elizabethan Spanish lessons 2 works issued together, single volume, folio (282 x 188 mm). Contemporary limp vellum, spine lettered in manuscripts, ties removed. Issued with A Spanish Grammar, 1599, which has separate dated title page and pagination; register is continuous. Vellum restored at foot of spine and front cover, front free endpaper backed, small paper repairs at outer corners of title, wormhole, mostly single, at centre throughout, touching letters, paper flaws at foot of 1st Kk3 (no loss), in Spanish Grammar corner torn from f2 not affecting text, and paper flow at foot of m1 touching signature letter on recto only, these flaws minor, not detracting significantly from an excellent copy in contemporary limp vellum. First edition thus, based on two textbooks of Spanish by Richard Perceval (or Percyvall), entitled Bibliotheca Hispanica (1591), the lexicon of which John Minsheu (1559/60–1627) considerably augmented. Minsheu "refers to hostility towards his work in certain quarters, but ensured the grant of a licence to print by applying successfully to the archbishop of Canterbury. The printers set to work, so hurriedly that Minsheu, who had retired to the country 'upon necessitie' (Dictionarie), was given no opportunity to read the proofs; consequently he promised his readers to publish a corrected and augmented version" (ODNB). Minsheu had settled in London as a language teacher and his Spanish dictionaries, of which there were eventually three, were primarily designed to make foreign-language learning easier for English speakers … [Click Below for Full Description]

First edition of all three extant books of this large history of Siena written by the patrician and town representative Orlando Malavolti (1515-1596) who died before he could finish his work. The first book had come out separately in 1574. The present copy does have the first 4 leaves with an extra title and a dedication that seem to lack in many other copies (here there are altogether 4+8=12 leaves instead of only 8). Malavolti prepared also a map of the town and its surroundings that does though circulate independtly from the book. All three parts and the first four leaves with the dedication have a woodcut portrait of Malavolti in a nice border. - All three titels with a small old armorial stamp, last endpaper with two older stamps of a freemason s lodge and a crowned eagle, only little browning or spotting, mostly crisp, just slightly rubbed, else fine. BASSANTIN [BASSENDYNE], JAMES
Jean de Tournes, 1599. Folio (430 x 288 mm), pp [iv] 262 [2, blank], with woodcut printer’s device on title and 175 woodcuts and woodcut diagrams, including 37 full-page woodcut astronomical figures of which 18 (one half-page and 17 full-page) have a total of 35 volvelles; a fine complete copy in contemporary calf, gilt fillets on covers, spine with gilt compartments. Splendid Copy of an Extremely Rare Astronomical work, dedicated to the Palatine Count Frederick IV. Bassantin’s beautifully produced work for calculating planetary positions, largely associated with Apianus’ great Astronomicum Caesareum 1540. Many of the large woodcut diagrams and volvelles are very similar to that work, including the first volvelle, a full-page celestial planisphere of the northern hemisphere. ‘The size of this volume and the extent of its illustration make this an unusually fine example of the attention given to the printing of scientific works at this period’ (Mortimer). James Bassantin (d. 1568) was a Scots astronomer and astrologer, born in the reign of James IV. He studied at the University of Glasgow, devoting himself to science and mathematics. He continued his education on the Continent in several countries, before settling in France as a teacher of mathematics, first in Lyons and then in Paris. Bassantin was knowledgeable of advances in German and Italian mathematics and astronomy. He produced a revised edition of Jacques Foucard’s Paraphrase de l’astrolabe (Lyons 1555), which contained his ‘Amplification de l’usage de l’astrolabe’, reprinted several times. This an example of Herbert 247 which bears the date 1599 but was probably printed in 1630 and no one knows why you always find this date. The other odd thing is the 2 titles at the front with one or the other often missing. This is a really nice solid example with a quality binding rarely reproduced now I have a tendency to highlight the faults in the jpegs rather than the positives so no one is disappointed and much better than seen in the jpegs.

CASTELLI, Francesco.
First edition of the extensive defence by Francesco Castelli (1599-1667) of his 1648 designs for a new façade for the Milan Cathedral (plates 4-6), published as a result of the rejection of his designs. A second edition or reissue with additional material appeared in 1656. There is no full-fledged title-page, but a sort of half-title without the author's name or imprint. Although many architects, including no less a figure than Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini, had endorsed Castelli's designs (all published in this work), the design of his competitor Carlo Buzzi (ca. 1585-1658) was chosen (plate 3). Buzzi had been recently and unexpectedly appointed head of the church factory of the Cathedral, succeeding Francesco Maria Richini (1584-1658), who had also designed a new façade elaborating on earlier designs by Pellegrino Tibaldi (1527-1596) (plates 1-2).Richini's design was romanesque in style and Buzzi's gothic, while Castelli's combined gothic and baroque elements. The judgments of many Italian architects on such a controversial project as the replacement of the façade of one of the most important cathedrals in Italy provides us with a highly interesting discussion. We are given a clear insight into how the most important Italian architects of the mid-17th century (Bernini among them) viewed the different architectural styles, and it gives us an impression of their preferences. This extremely rare work is therefore of the utmost importance for the history of architecture and the role of the different styles in 17th-century Italy. In very good condition. London England: Christopher Barker. 1599 Geneva Bible Bound with the Book of Psalms, Concordances and Tables Protestant Reformation Holy Bible, The Bible of the Pilgrims Quarto, Good Condition You are bidding on a complete all original (no facsimile pages) Geneva Quarto Bible, 1599. Handsomely bound period binding, completely intact, one of the better bindings I've seen actually. 3 Title pages: General, NT, Psalms Contains Old Testament, New Testament, Psalms. Printed by Robert Barker, LONDON. Book condition is good+, with typical age-appropriate indicators such as some damp stains, watermarks, and other marks and blemishes as customarily found on some pages. Overall, for a Geneva, the book is in very nice condition. Like nearly all Geneva bibles, this one is also trimmed very tight at the top on many pages. Some writing on first blank page, and first intro page. More pics available if needed. All in all, a very lovely copy of a great historical bible. ++++++ ABOUT THE GENEVA BIBLE The Geneva Bible is one of the most historically significant translations of the Bible into English, preceding the King James Version by 51 years.[1] It was the primary Bible of 16th-century English Protestantism and was used by William Shakespeare,[2] Oliver Cromwell, John Knox, John Donne, and John Bunyan, author of The Pilgrim's Progress (1678).[3] It was one of the Bibles taken to America on the Mayflower (Pilgrim Hall Museum has collected several Bibles of Mayflower passengers). The Geneva Bible was used by many English Dissenters, and it was still respected by Oliver Cromwell's soldiers at … [Click Below for Full Description]
