S.l.n.d. (c.1580-1600?). MANUSCRIT in-16. 6ff. 15ff. chiffrés. 181ff. [Click Below for Full Description]

ARNOLDI, Arnoldo di
[Siena,: Matteo Florimi, c1600]. [Siena,: Matteo Florimi,, c1600].. Il mondo nuovo su chiamato America da Amerigo Vespucci Fiorentino ilquale la scoprii circa 5 anni doppo Christoforro Colombo... Double-page engraved map, minor expert repairs to verso. Only edition of this rare, separately-published map of North and South America. Arnoldo di Arnoldi (d.1602) was a Flemish born cartographer who lived and worked for most of his life in Italy in the workshop of the famous geographer Giovanni Antonio Magini. Burden reports that in early 1600 he moved to Sienna, where he produced two world maps (a large-scale ten-sheet map and a smaller two-sheet map) as well as a set of the four continents, of which this is one. He died soon after. Arnoldi and his publisher, Matteo Florimi, are identified on his map of Europe, accompanied by a statement that his maps were taken from Ortelius' ‘Theatrum'. This statement is, upon closer examination, at odds with the evidence. Instead, Arnoldi's work has far more in common with Giovanni Battista Mazza's c1589 map of America. New Guinea is shown here as an island rather than as an extension of Terra Australis, and the large island off the coast of Virginia is unique to Mazza, among other similarities. However, Arnoldi strays from Mazza in the northern regions of America where, as in his world maps, he used Petrus Plancius' wall map of 1592 as his source. This is evident in the placement of rivers in the northwest, as well as his inclusion of the mythic lake and island city of “Conibaz” instead of Mazza's equally imaginary “Mare Dulce”. HOLLAND, PHILEMON, Translator. LIVIUS, TITUS. [LIVY]
London: Adam Islip, 1600. FIRST COMPLETE EDITION IN ENGLISH. This edition of Livy's history of Rome is, in Pforzheimer's words, "the first of that stately array of folio translations of the classics which issued from the pens of the 'translator general in his age.'" It is described by DNB as "a work of great importance" that "set out to be lucid and unpretentious, and achieved its aim with marked success," all the while being "accurate, and often lively." Throughout the Renaissance, Livy (first century B.C.) was revered as the premier source for Roman history, and his account of the rise of Rome from humble beginnings and its triumphs in the Punic Wars was central to historical and political thought. Although the British had access to English excerpts of Livy, they could not read his complete text in their own language until the present edition was published. Holland (1552-1637) was a physician whose love of the classics prompted a devotion to rendering ancient authors (including Pliny, Plutarch, and others) into the language of Shakespeare. Besides the complete text of Livy's history, our volume contains an essay on the topography of Rome by J. Bartholomew Marlian of Milan, as well as the "Breviaries" of Florus, a useful chronology that summarizes the lost books of Livy, also appearing here for the first time in English. Our copy has graced the libraries of important collectors, including that of Algernon Capell, 2nd Earl of Essex (1670-1710), and Dr. H. R. Knohl. A colonel in the 4th Dragoons, Capell was Gentleman of the Bedchamber to King William III between 1691 and 17 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Condition: Like New. Hurt(ful) Body : Performing and Beholding Pain 1600-1800, Hardcover by Macsotay, Tomas (EDT); Haven, Cornelis Van Der (EDT); Vanhaesebrouck, Karel (EDT), ISBN 1784995169, ISBN-13 9781784995164 This book offers a cross-disciplinary approach to pain and suffering in the early modern period, based on research in the fields of literary studies, art history, theatre studies, cultural history and the study of emotions. The volume's two-fold approach to the hurt body, defining 'hurt' from the perspectives of both victim and beholder - as well as their combined creation of a gaze - is unique. It establishes a double perspective about the riddle of 'cruel' viewing by tracking the shifting cultural meanings of victims' bodies, and confronting them to the values of audiences, religious and popular institutional settings and practices of punishment. It encompasses both the victim's presence as an image or performed event of pain and the conundrum of the look - the transmitted 'pain' experienced by the watching audience.

Here we have a SUPER RARE copy of Glamour, Greed & Glory : Dynasty. It is an EX LIBRARY copy. I would say it's in a very good condition. It has a soft cover, it's NOT a hardback. Over 700 pages. The cheapest edition I can find is on another very famous shopping site that begins with an A (:-)) and it's over £1600 there. As previously stated it is an EX LIBRARY copy and does have the usual library markings, all markings are shown in the photos. Book information and reviews - Dynasty fans are getting more than their share of one of the Super Soaps of the 1980's. With the news of the upcoming Dynasty Reunion special slated to film in April and rumours of a feature film on the horizon, fans of the series are dusting off their shoulder pads and picking up copies of the book 'Glamour, Greed & Glory: Dynasty" by Judith A. Moose and Paul D. Keylock. The 702-page book is filled with information from the show's humble beginnings to becoming one of the biggest success stories in television history. Also included in this monster-sized book is a synopsis on each episode complete with guest star guide, the most comprehensive character guide on the market, hundreds and hundreds of photographs, press releases, marketing campaigns, memorabilia and more. The book's foreword was written by Dynasty's leading diva Joan Collins and is followed by introductions by the book's two authors. In an interesting twist, there's even a section in which fans of the series shared their favourite moments and memories and a preview of things to come from the cast of the series. Tel Aviv and Jaffa were merged into a single municipality in 1950, two years after the establishment of the State of Israel. In the 16th century, Jaffa was conquered by the Ottomans and was administered as a village in the Sanjak of Gaza.Napoleon besieged the city in 1799 and killed scores of inhabitants; a plague epidemic followed, decimating the remaining population. The surrendering garrison of several thousand Muslims was massacred.Builder in Tel Aviv, 1920s Jaffa began to grow as an urban center in the early 18th century, when the Ottoman government in Istanbul intervened to guard the port and reduce attacks by Bedouins and pirates. However, the real expansion came during the 19th century, when the population grew from 2,500 in 1806 to 17,000 in 1886.; - vita of the artist: John Ogilby was a Scottish translator, impresario and cartographer. Such commentary is featured in the work 'Vaticinia'.This 1600 bilingual edition of 'Vaticinia' features a Fiore biography by Gabriel Barrio, descriptions of the prophecies of Anselm and Palmerio, illustrations of Girolamo Porro's prophetic wheel, as well as commentary on the prophecies of Pascal Regiselmo. 'Emblemes' contains one-hundred emblems, which are typically morals or poems accompanied by illustrations, a form of religious text that was very popular during the 16th and 17th centuries. Montenay's 'Emblemes' are mostly Protestant in their views. An undated copy. ESTC and Copac only have records of the 1619 polygot edition, which differs to this copy in pagination and translation content. The 1619 edition is ESTC record no. S94206. This copy is lacking the title page (A1) and leaves F3 and F4. 1619 edition has a preface and a riddle to the rear, of which this copy is potentially lacking but there is no evidence to the gatherings that this printing had the preface. When collated using the catch-words this copy is lacking pages one, four, twenty-eight, twenty-nine, seventy-four, seventy-eight, seventy-nine, eighty, eighty-one, eighty-two, eighty-five, eighty-six, eighty-nine, ninety-five, and ninety-six. Closed tears to the fore edge of pages twenty, forty, and forty-one. It's unclear when the 'Emblemes' were first published, as there's been evidence of copies existing as early as 1561, despite it being originally thought to have appeared in publication in 1571. It is possible that, due to the religious turmoil at the time, the publication was delayed. The turmoil in question was the French Wars of Religion between the Roman Catholics and Huguenots between 1562 and 1598. Montenay herself was of the Reformed/Calvinist faith. Montenay was taken into the cou … [Click Below for Full Description]

Xi Zhu
Fukien, China: Yeh Nan-sung-t'ang, 1600. Four volumes in two, stab-bound in contemporary Korean paper covers, resewn, minor worming, very good in a cloth folding case. Zhu Xi (1130-200) was a Song Dynasty scholar who championed the importance of the Four Books (Analects, the Mencius, the Great Learning, and the Doctrine of the Mean) in Chinese philosophy during a time where the I Ching (Book of Changes) was considered the most important text. His heavily annotated editions of each became standard texts after his death. This copy of the I Ching was printed later in the Ming dynasty, and contains a colophon in the form of a cartouche in the back, indicating the name and place of its publisher.
