ARISTOTE [ARISTOTLE, ARISTOTELES] + PLATON [PLATO]. - [FIRST FULL FRENCH TRANSLATIONS OF ARISTOTLE'S POLITICS & PLATO'S REPUBLIC]
Paris, Chez Ambroise Drouart, 1600. Folio. Bound in one contemporary full limp vellum binding with a bit of spotting and soiling. Contemporary owner's name torn out of top margin of first title-page. Faint damp stain to two first leaves and a light dampstain to last ab. 40 leaves of the Plato, getting heavier on the last five index-leaves. A bit of occasional minor light brownspotting. All in all a very attractive copy, with good margins. Roman and Italic letter, and some Greek. Title-pages printed in red and black and with large woodcut printer's devices. Woodcut head- and tail-pieces and numerous beautiful woodcut initials. (24), 499, (41, -tables) pp. + (8), 420, (10, -table) pp. Extremely scarce first editions of the important first complete French translations of the Politics of Aristotle and the Republic of Plato. We have not been able to locate any earlier printings of the two works in any bibliographies, nor have we been able to find any in the library databases, but it seems that Bibliothèque nationale du France owns a copy of at least the Aristotle with a title-page stating 1599, also Paris by Drouart. We thus assume that this is the same printing, but with a variant title-page. Both of these monumental works are translated by Louis Le Roy (or Leroy), the great classical scholar, and have his learned an important commentaries, including additions and amendments by Louis Morel, who published the work with Drouart. For many many years this first complete translation in to French was considered by far the best and it exercised a tremendous influence on 17th century F … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Taverner
William Ponsonby, London, 1600. First Edition. Taverner's rare treatise on aquaculture, fish behavior and the growing of fruit trees. Lacking the title page (provided in facsimile) and the preface. It begins at Aiiii, "To the reader", though it has one original blank (Ai). Mostly in black letter, (ii), 1-38. light hand soiling, age toning and occasional minor stains, but generally clean. Disbound, housed in a cloth chemise. Small quarto (7 1/8" high).& & Taverner's observations of nymphs and maturing flies, and their relationship to fishing, were ahead of Walton, Markham, Barker and others writing 50 years or more later. Entomological observations the likes of Taverner's weren't to appear in print until Cotton's additions to The Compleat Angler in 1676. & & His work on aquaculture is the first known comprehensive paper on the management of carp, bream, trench, and perch in ponds (not to mention eels, the breeding of which he deems "very uncertain and unknown", though he discusses them at length). The section on fruit trees, like the work as a whole, is remarkable for its reliance on first hand experience rather than classical authors.& & Bibliotheca Piscatoria 205, Graesse 42 Size: Quarto (4to). Text is clean and unmarked. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 500 grams. Category: Fishing & Hunting; Antiquarian & Rare. Inventory No: 039883. .

"ehon - or 'picture books,' in Japanese. ... are one of the true glories of Japanese art but are little known today, even in Japan, because of their great rarity ... their breathtaking exuberance, sophisticated artistry, sensuality, unparalleled originality, intellectual gravity, playful spirit, and lightness of touch. Ehon are part of an incomparable 1,230-year-old Japanese tradition. Created by artists and craftsmen, most ehon also feature essays, poems, or other texts written in beautiful, distinctive calligraphy. They are by nature collaborations: visual artists, calligraphers, writers, and designers join forces with papermakers, binders, block cutters, and printers. GILBERT, William
Woodcut printer's device on title, Gilbert's woodcut coat of arms on verso, numerous woodcut diagrams & illus. in the text, & one folding woodcut plate (one fold with a careful repair). 8 p.l. 240 pp. Folio, cont. limp vellum (some occasional spotting, a few unimportant dampstains), ties gone. London: P. Short, 1600. First edition, and a very fine and fresh copy, of the first major English scientific treatise based on experimental methods of research and the foundation work of magnetism and electrical science. Gilbert uses here for the first time the terms "electricity," "electric force," and "electric attraction." Book I "deals with the history of magnetism from the earliest legends about the lodestone to the facts and theories known to Gilbert's contemporaries...In the last chapter of book I, Gilbert introduced his new basic idea which was to explain all terrestrial magnetic phenomena: his postulate that the earth is a giant lodestone and thus had magnetic properties...The remaining five books of the De magnete are concerned with the five magnetic movements: coition, direction, variation, declination, and revolution. Before he began his discussion of coition, however, Gilbert carefully distinguished the attraction due to the amber effect from that caused by the lodestone. This section, chapter 2 of book II, established the study of the amber effect as a discipline separate from that of magnetic phenomena, introduced the vocabulary of electrics, and is the basis for Gilbert's place in the history of electricity."-D.S.B., V, p. 397. (QUR'AN)
Western Iran or Ottoman Turkey: Signed by 'Abd al-Nahif al-Raji, Circa 1600. Arabic and Persian manuscript (36.8 x 24 cm) on thin cream paper with 10 alternating lines of fine naskh and nasta'liq script in black ink per page, illuminated double page frontispiece in blue, black, gold and other colours, surah headings in red muhaqqaq script, verse endings in gold illuminated rosettes, gilt stamped binding. Housed in a brown flat back cloth solander box. Safavid and Ottoman manuscript illumination was highly eclectic in the sixteenth and seventeenth century, reflecting the interactions of artists from all over the Islamic world. The illumination in this Qur'an shows the strong influence of Eastern Iranian traditions, an attested feature of a group of Ottoman manuscripts dating from c. 1520-50 (see in particular J. M. Rogers & R. M. Ward, Suleyman the Magnificent, London, 1988, cat. no. 19, p. 73). This influence is particularly visible in the lavish frontispiece of the present Qur'an, where the illuminated panels with black borders on both sides of the text and the large blue and gold hasps projecting into the margins from the centre of the smooth border are reminiscent of Herati and Bukharan work of the sixteenth century. The style of illumination, decoration and calligraphy in this manuscript demonstrates the frequent movement of artists between artistic centres in northern Persia and the Ottoman Empire. Certain features, however, particularly the lotus-shaped flowers in the gold cartouches of the frontispiece, and the colour palette of red, pale green, mauve … [Click Below for Full Description]

That said, an inscription on a rear flyleaf shows that the book was given to Carolo Caesari Blaird for ""singularis diligenticae praemium ... in schola humanitatis auditori, and is signed and dated Joannes d'Herouville, Humaniorum litterarium professor in Collegio Marchiano, anno 1720."" & & The Polyanthea is one of the earliest ""Konversationlexica,"" an encyclopaedial work arranged in alphabetical order and covering subjects in the fields of classical antiquity, medieval history, natural history a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Santorio, Giulio Antonio (1532-1602), römischer Kardinal und Großinquisitor.
Rom, 27. Februar [1600].. Ital.

VISSCHER, N
Totius Regni Hungariae et adjacentium Regionum TabulaA beautiful, highly detailed map of  southeastern Europe by Nicolas Visscher. Includes regions of Northern Italy (showing the cities Bologna, Padua, and Venice), Bohemia, Austria (showing Vienna), Hungary, Poland, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Yugoslavia, Romania, Bulgaria, and the western coast of the Black Sea.Striking, vibrant, original color. An ornamental title cartouche is in the lower left corner. Truly outstanding, original color. The family of Visscher was one of the most distinguished of all seventeenth century cartographical firms, and major figures in the era now considered the Golden Age of Dutch mapmaking.  In the late 1600's, a period of great geographical discovery, Amsterdam was the international center of cartography.  A number of venerable firms, including those established by Blaeu, Jansson, and Hondius competed for the ever-expanding market for maps and atlases.  Despite the intense competition, with maps such as these Nicolas Visscher set standards for exceptional quality that few other firms were able to equal.  Boasting advanced geographical information, fine engraving and coloring, and striking decoration, Visscher's maps are fundamental illustrations of the reasons for Dutch supremacy in mapmaking during the 17th century.        VISSCHER, N    Amsterdam, 1687.533 x  864 mmOriginal color A 7 inch repaired tear is in the lower right section of the map; some discoloration in paper margin.

Stengler, Fabius (pseud.).
No place, c. 1600. 4to. Latin ms. (black and red ink) on paper. (12) pp. Disbound. Contemporary ms. copy of this mock disputation which spawned an entire genre of "hare literature", also translated into German. "The early years of the last decade of the 16th century saw the publication of a pamphlet dressed up as an academic disputation, entitled 'Theses de hasione et hasibili qualitate'. It bears no place or year of printing; its author and publisher are unknown [.] The text, written in a precise and almost elegant Latin, is too critical to be regarded as a mere student prank. The author, it would seem, was probably a witty scholar rather than a student, one endowed with a sense of humour but who first of all wished to show up the deficiencies of his times, thus contributing to the popular genre of fool's literature" (cf. Lindner 288). By 1741 the work had been republished at least 25 times. - Browned throughout due to paper; some edge defects. T. p. ruled in red. Cf. Erman/Horn I, 7416.

METELLUS, Johannes, derived from & ACOSTA, J. DE
Cologne: America sive Novis Orbis, [1600]. 1st Edition. No binding. Very Good. SCARCE TO RARE EDITION VERY EARLY MAP OF CENTRAL CANADA Size: 6.7 x 8.5 inches. 17.0 x 21.5 cm. Uncoloured. With wide margins. Paper very slightly age-toned. Very good condition. German text on verso. 1st German edition of this map. "Wytfliet and Metellus produced the first separate printed maps of the Southern Hemisphere. Both are foundation maps of America and Australia. The Wytfliet is known to have been produced in 1597, the Metellus, which is much rarer and seldom available on the market, is usually dated 1598 but some scholars have argued the possibility that it may precede the Wytfliet. This interesting map is a slightly reduced version of Cornelis Wytfliet's 1597 map of the same title., The basic cartography derives from Gerard Mercator's world map of 1569, which first depicted a large body of water inland in the extreme north. There has been much speculation as to what this might refer to. It has been suggested that it could be a record of a voyage unknown to us that visited Hudson Bay, it could even be remnants of the Verrazano sea theory. This is an early [1600] printed map of present-day central Canada. Published in the German edition of José de Acosta's De Natura Nova Orbis, first published in Salamanca, 1588. Acosta was a Spanish Jesuit missionary, historian and cosmographer. The included maps, however, are attributed to Metellus. In the America sive Novis Orbis of 1600, he is named as the cartographer of the maps but, most probably, did not see their completion as he … [Click Below for Full Description]

Small quarto (7 1/8" high). Taverner's observations of nymphs and maturing flies, and their relationship to fishing, were ahead of Walton, Markham, Barker and others writing 50 years or more later. Entomological observations the likes of Taverner's weren't to appear in print until Cotton's additions to The Compleat Angler in 1676. His work on aquaculture is the first known comprehensive paper on the management of carp, bream, trench, and perch in ponds (not to mention eels, the breeding of which he deems "very uncertain and unknown", though he discusses them at length). The section on fruit trees, like the work as a whole, is remarkable for its reliance on first hand experience rather than classical authors. Bibliotheca Piscatoria 205, Graesse 42 Size: Quarto (4to). Text is clean and unmarked. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 500 grams. Category: Fishing & Hunting; Antiquarian & Rare. Inventory No: 039883. .

SERRES, Olivier de, seigneur de Pradel
Finely engraved architectural title-page by Mallery with Henri IV seated on his throne in a garden, eight fine woodcut vignettes, fine woodcut initials, and 13 large woodcuts in Chapters XIII & XIV. 9 p.l., 3-1004, [20] pp. Folio, 18th cent. mottled calf (minor scuffing to binding extremities), spine gilt, contrasting lettering piece on spine. Paris: J. Metayer, 1600. First edition of the first great French work on agronomy -- in its widest sense -- to be published. In this book, Serres devotes substantial sections to hunting, cookery, practical medicine, irrigation, forestry, viticulture, vegetable gardening, medicinal plants, fruit trees, silk cultivation, the management of servants, etc., etc. The author also discusses the duties of the mistress of the house and remedies for all manner of diseases suffered by men and animals. The work is divided into eight books, one of which is devoted entirely to wine and the culture of the grape. At the head of each book is a pretty woodcut vignette (145 x 68 mm.) enclosed within an ornamental border. These show various scenes on the estate: cows, the dairy, etc.; in the next ploughing and sowing are in progress; the third illustrates viticulture and the wine press; others show milking scenes, bee-hives, landscape gardening, forestry, and at the end a hunting scene with falcons. Serres (1539-1619), a Protestant, took part in the religious struggles in his native Vivarais. After 1573, he retired to his family's property of Pradel where for more than a quarter of a century he tried to revive the estate. It was there that he wrote th … [Click Below for Full Description]
