A nice copy with annotations from the time of the Glorious Revolution. * Covers regnal years 40 to 50 of Edward III. With an index of cases, side-notes and cross-references to Brooke, Fitzherbert and other authorities. It is difficult to overestimate the importance of the Year Books. As a series of notes on debates and points of pleadings in Norman England they are of crucial primary sources for our knowledge of medieval common law. They also provide a richly detailed portrait of contemporary English life, customs and manners. The origin of the Year Books is unknown. Maitland believed that the earliest volumes were notes taken by law students in court copied for the use of pleaders in later cases. " Graesse V, 114; Baudrier III, 454 u. 408 see Brunet IV, 331. Rare French edition of the chivalric novel "El libro del famoso e muy esforcado Cavallero Palmerin de Oliva", the first volume translated by Fr. de Vernassal, the second by Gabriel Chappuis. The genre was very popular at a time, Cervantes made fun of it and had the Palmerin burned in his "Don Quichote" (I,6). There were two more volumes published by Rigaud, here only 1 and 2 of 4. The beautiful bindings are, according to an inscription "relie en maroquin ancien par Suzanne Tenet 1984". An exellent work, hardly noticable as old endpapers are used. "

[Click Below for Full Description]

Bible. N.T. English. 1600. Rheims.
By Daniel Vervliet, 1600. The second edition of the Roman Catholic new Testament in English. The translation is the work of a number of English Catholic priests, but principally of Gregory Martin, who fled to France in 1568 because of persecution in their native land, and, under the direction of Dr. (later, Cardinal) William Allen, founded the English College at Douai. (The college moved for a short time to Rheims, but subsequently returned, as the title-page here attests.) The first edition of this translation was issued at Rheims in 1582, in over-sanguine hopes that its sale would be successful enough to underwrite the cost of a prompt production of the Old Testament. The two-volume O.T. did not appear, however, until 1609/1610. The second edition of the Rheims N.T. is a revision of the first, not merely a reprinting of it, and contains a "Table of Heretical Corruptions" not found in the 1582 printing and a new preface. In an era of noticeable decline in the art of printing, this Testament enjoys far better than average typography.

Castillejo, Cristóbal de. (Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca, h.1491 - Viena, 1556).
[Click Below for Full Description]

It shows a bird's-eye view of the city that includes the temples of King David and Solomon, the Temple on the Mount, and other significant locales. Bethlehem can be seen in the distance off in the upper left corner. Cardinal directions are written along each edge of the map, with west oriented to the top. Heinrich Bünting (1545-1606) was a Protestant pastor and theologian.
[France} [No publisher] c. 1600. Folio, 307 x 194 mms., consisting of undated title-page and sixteen plates, with the plates measuring 120 x 90 mms., with dates of 1504, 1507, 1508, 1512, etc., the plates having been excised from a printed book, mounted in a folding leaf open at top and bottom but closed on the sides, and placed by a former owner in a 17th century vellum binding; several of the plates have text on the verso, but the mounting makes it virtually impossible to read. Of the sixteen plates three have old tape marks the rest are good to very good, some lightly inked but, overall a good set This is the complete "Engraved Passion" of Albrecht Durer, printed in what appears to be an unrecorded French edition. There is no record of any edition of these plates with this title. All editions are very rare. Most were broken up in the eighteenth century for their plates. The title page appears to be the only evidence of the existence of this edition.

Illuminated Bible
Ethiopia: No Publisher Named, [1600]. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. [ca 1600]An excellent Illuminated Coptic Bible from Ethiopia, approximately 400 to 500 years old, in Shittim wood boards, containing a portion of the Christian Scriptures. The Bible is housed in a handmade leather case, with hand lettering in black and in red, has string ties at the upper corner of some pages (providing place markers for a prior owners favorite passages or sections), and is beautifully illuminated in hand at the front and rear pages and at two internal pages. The Bible's boards are made of shittim wood (a type of acacia wood) which in turn is covered in a lovely decorative cloth, most of which cloth has survived the book's many years of handling. [Shittim wood likely was chosen for this Bible as it is native to the area and was the wood of which the Ark of the Covenant was constructed. See Exodus 25.] Previously owned by a nomadic Ethiopian, the owner would have spent time reading the book at night near the fire and both the book and the case still carry the campfire's aroma. Written in Ge'ez and in Very Good condition, the rear board is lacking some of the sinews that hold the book together, but the remaining sinews are holding well. The Bible's leather case would one have had a strap for carrying the encased book over the owner's shoulder as well as a strap of leather running across the front of the case into which the case's tongue would have been tucked, each of which leather straps is lacking. Also, as noted above, the decorative cloth covering shows … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bible
Ethiopia: No Publisher Named, [1600]. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. [ca 1600] A Scarce Coptic Bible from Ethiopia, approximately 400 to 500 years old, in Shittim wood boards with a leather spine sewn on, containing a portion of the Christian Scriptures written in Ge'ez in red and black lettering and with numerous (apparently both contemporary and later) marignal notes in different hands. The Bible's boards are made of shittim wood, which likely was chosen for this Bible as it is native to the area and was the wood of which the Ark of the Covenant was constructed. [See Exodus 25.] Previously owned by a nomadic Ethiopian, the owner would have spent time reading the book at night near the fire and the book still carries the campfire's aroma. In Very Good condition, the boards each have been repaired with old stitching, and the pages show stains to the margins (and in some cases affecting text -- which remains legible) due to the centuries over which this book was handled, a bit of rubbing to the text here and there and four small holes to the leaves within the text block. A very nice example of an Ethiopian Coptic Bible, beautifully illuminated. QUITE SCARCE.

Nicolas de Bruyn (Anversa 1570 circa ? Amsterdam 1656)
Bulino, circa 1600, firmato in lastra in basso. Engraving, about 1600, signed in plate below. From a drawing by Maarten de Vos. Beautiful proof, printed on contemporary laid paper, with thin margins, in excellent condition. Nicolas de Bruyn was the son of Abraham, by whom he was directed to the study of the incision. However, it followed the example of style and performance, inspired by the work instead of Lucas van Leyden. Maarten de Vos's drawings depicting the story of Adam and Eve are also engraved by Crispin de Passe. Dimensioni 120x132.
