1600. Octavo (204 x 142 mm); four folding engraved maps of the continents. 19th century quarter green morocco over marbled boards, gilt titling and decoration to spine. Boards rubbed, corners bumped and frayed, a few small wormholes (now defunct) to joints, very good otherwise. Venice : Giorgio Angelieri, Giovanni Botero (1533-1617) was an Italian Jesuit, who became secretary to the Duke of Savoy. An important writer and noted economist, he is best known for his Relationi Universali, a geographical description of the world, which incorporates a political and religious commentary. The book was first published in 1591, and quickly spawned a large number of editions, a number of which were illustrated with maps. This edition, published by Angelieri in 1600, includes maps of the four continents based on the respective maps in Abraham Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, first published in Antwerp in 1570; the map of the Americas has the characteristic bulge in the west coast of South America made familiar by Ortelius. The maps, three of which are signed by Girolamo Porro, first appeared in Giovannia d'Anania's L'Universale Fabrica de Universi, 1582; Burden, referring to the map of America, described it as ? a typically attractive Italian copperplate engraving .? Reference: Burden 54, describing the Americas map. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Panciroli, Ottavio
954 pp. volume on the "hidden treasures" of Rome, including a brief treatise on the 1600 Jubliee, its origins, and ceremonies, as well as chapters on the catacombs, the titles, deaconships, and bishoprics of cardinals, relics, and the stations, with a focus on the churches of Rome, indices. Not illustrated. Some very minor scattered staining and foxing, small loss to last page, missing final "Registro" page. 8vo. Old vellum, handwritten title to spine, some very minor soiling and staining. Rome (Luigi Zannetti) 1600. Rossetti 7781, Borroni 7984, Fossati Bellani 856, Kissner 987, Ranghiasci 517, Schudt 439, Sicari 256. Provenance: From the library of Sergio Rossetti. Ottavio Panciroli was a theologian who published this work to commemorate the 1600 Jubilee. In his "letter to readers" he states that this work was explicitly intended to counter the recently-published "Cose Meravigliose", expanded and revised by the Augustinian friar Santi Solinori. The most innovative and important feature of "I Tesori Nascosti", in terms of the breadth and credibility of coverage, is its treatment of the churches of Rome. Panciroli set out to provide a comprehensive overview of Rome's churches, describing 313 of them, as opposed to only 141 covered in "Cose Meravigliose". This work became an important reference source for Panciroli's successors. A scarce copy of the first edition of this important work. [Attributes: First Edition]

[City of the Caesars; shipwreck account].
[Late 16th or early 17th century]. [Chile]. Folio, (315 x 216 mm). 3 pp. Light water damage to the lower right corner affecting text.- Extremely rare manuscript, which provides an account of one of the earliest Spanish shipwrecks in the Straits of Magellan, and the subsequent inland voyage by the survivors through South America towards Chile; this is one of the earliest sources on the mythical City of the Caesars. Itself a remarkable record of an early Spanish voyage to the Americas, therelaciónhad an (unexpected) afterlife, beginning perhaps around 1600, as a catalyst for the legend of the ‘City of the Caesars’, a mythical settlement rumored to be in Patagonia whose wealth was said to be on par with that of ‘El Dorado’ and the ‘Seven Cities of Gold’. Like these fabulous cities sought by Pizarro, Aguirre, Raleigh, Coronado and others, the ‘City of the Caesars’ became a template for romantic speculation about ‘lost cities’ in Latin America that persists to this day. Therelaciónapparently was first composed as a sober account of an (admittedly unusual) event, but by the time the present manuscript was written out it was already being filed as evidence for this lost settlement, as evinced by the label “Noticia de los Cesares” written on the document’s verso. The present manuscript thus is an account of an early exploration of South America and an instance of the (still inextricable) tangle of fact and fable, which can sometimes characterize the early descriptions of Spanish intervention in the … [Click Below for Full Description]

NICOLAY, Nicolas de.
(Paris, 1600).Folio. Original wrappers, preserved in a modern marbled box. With 62 full-page engraved portraits of Turkish, Arabian and Greec characters and costumes and 17 full-page engraved epigrammatic plates prophesying the fall of the Ottoman empire.First published in French at Lyon in 1567 Les quatre premeurs livres des navigations et peregrinations orientales. This is the very rare anonymous and uncommon edition, with a new title. At the end: Artus THOMAS. This is one of the most important Turkish costume books. The fine costume plates were extremely influential and have been used as prototypes in many different works. Nicolay(1517-1583), royal geographer to the French king Charles IX, followed the ambassador Gabriel d' Aramon on his mission to Constantinople in 1551. In the Navigations, he deals as much with France after the outbreak of the civil war as with the Ottoman Empire. Through his portrayal of the Turks and other Mediterraneen peoples, the traveller turned royal geographer advocates loyalty to the monarch, religious moderation and tolerance, as well as national unity. The copper engravings are now generally accepted to have been made by Louis Danet after Nicolay's drawings (Angus O'Neill, Koç collection, 18). One of the most influential works on the Turks and their subject peoples to appear in the 16th century. It was translated into various … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mattheus QUAD (Deventer 1557 - Colonia 1613)
Scarce early map of the Asia from Quad's Atlas Geographische Handbuch, published by Johann Bussemacher. Quad's map is a marvelous amalgam of early cartographic information and mis-inforamtion. The Korean peninsula does not appear. Japan is shaped in a very curious C shape. The Philippines is oddly misconfigured and much of SE Asia is mishaped or conjectural. Rich dark impression and full color, with wide margins.

Matteo FLORIMI
Siena, 1600. Acquaforte e bulino in ottime condizioni. Opera rara. Al … [Click Below for Full Description]

Segue l'imprint editoriale Matteo Florimj for. Etching, circa 1590/1600. Stylistically, this extremely rare work can be placed halfway between mannerism and the sixteenth-century Italian school. Indeed, there are some similarities with the Fontainebleau school which are refined through the etching technique. It can probably be ascribed to an artist who worked in northern Italy. Magnificent proof, printed on contemporary laid paper with unidentifiable watermark, trimmed at the platemark with borderline, traces of red pencil-mark visible on verso, otherwise in very good conditions.

Giovanni Antonio MAGINI (1555 - 1617)
1600. "ESEMPLARE IN COLORITURA COEVA. Fine example of Magini's regional map of Italy, extending from the Gulf of Venice to Milan and North to the Lake District and the Alps. Fine elaborate detailed cartouche."
