Condition: Very Good. Excellent condition for 400 years of age. Oil On Alabaster c1600-1610 Item Details An exceptional and incredibly rare pair of Early 17th (XVII) century Italian oil paintings on alabaster, dating to circa 1600-1610. They are both painted on alabaster and are each in their original gilt wood frames which also date to the 17th century. They are both depict religious saints. The first one is of Saint Mary Magdalene Penitent repenting for all her sins. The second painting is of Saint Anthony the great holding the Tau Cross and The Hoy Bible. Both saints are placed beneath garlands for flowers surrounding them. The paintings have been completed by a very skilled artist featuring vibrant colours with very realistic features and details. The technique of painting on alabaster is a rare one; unlike other materials such as metal, canvas and wooden panel. This is because at the time, alabaster was a precious and expensive material to use. The surviving pieces are rare due to their fragile nature. Condition report: Overall, the paintings are in very good condition, the frames do show some signs of usage and ageing however, please expect this as these pieces are over 400 years old. Dimensions: Total size including frame: 22.5 x 19.5 cm Image size: 17 cm x 13 cm Weight for the pair: 1250 grams Please ask any questions that you may have. Items like this very rarely appear on the market and a very rare. When they do appear, they only feature in high class auction houses. A similar piece to the ones within this listing was valued between 3000-6000 euros for one alone, … [Click Below for Full Description]

S.l.n.d. (c.1580-1600?). MANUSCRIT in-16. 6ff. 15ff. chiffrés. 181ff. [Click Below for Full Description]

CASTILLEJO, Cristóbal
Madrid, Andreas Sánchez, 1600. Compilation of the literary works of the Spanish Renaissance poet. First published in 1573. Before this collection, Castillejo's works were scattered, some of them manuscripts and others present in hard-to-find editions. The task of bringing all these works together was carried out by the editor Juan López de Velasco, who did a great service to Spanish letters by bringing together everything that is known except the Sermon on Love and some easily understood suppressions in the Dialogue on Women's Conditions. The works were widely disseminated even in their handwritten version, before their first printing. This book is divided into three main parts. In the first place, there are the Works of Loves, that gather a small love songbook dedicated to one who is believed to be Anna von Schaumburg; numerous poems of circumstances or against love; glosses of romances, songs, carols and nicknames; etc. In second place we have the Works of Conversation and Pastime, where several satirical and humorous poems are included; the Fable of Acteon or the translation of Poliziano's famous epigram, A Hermaphrodite. Finally, in the Works of Morality and Devotion we find a representable song of the Sibyl; the Dialogue between Adulation and Truth, or the extensive Classroom of Courtiers. Cristobal de Castillejo was a Spanish poet, born in Ciudad Rodrigo (Spain) in 1490 and died in Vienna (Austria) in 1550. He was the greatest representative of the traditionalist reaction to the adaptation of the Italian metros made by Garcilaso de la Vega or Juan Boscán during the fi … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Moscow: Andronik Timofeev Nevezha?, 1600].Rare first edition of this important Eastern Orthodox liturgical book, in Russian binding. The Menaion contained texts for the service or celebration of specific observances, saints or events, which are tied to fixed calendar dates. In its complete form it was made of twelve volumes, one for each month. The Mineia Obshchaia, or General Menaion, was a simplified version. In it, services were not linked to any specific saint, but instead to types of saints; specific names could be added according to liturgical needs. The General Menaion thus provided the necessary texts to perform services for virtually any saint, including the more local or less widely known ones for whom a full Menaion service was not available. GILBERT, William
London: Peter Short, 1600. First edition of "the first major English scientific treatise based on experimental methods of research. Gilbert was chiefly concerned with magnetism; but as a digression he discusses in his second book the attractive effect of amber (electrum), and thus may be regarded as the founder of electrical science. He coined the terms 'electricity,' 'electric force' and 'electric attraction.' His 'versorium', a short needle balanced on a sharp point to enable it to move freely, is the first instrument designed for the study of electrical phenomena, serving both as an electroscope and electrometer. He contended that the earth was one great magnet; he distinguished magnetic mass from weight; and he worked on the application of terrestrial magnetism to navigation. Gilbert's book influenced Kepler, Bacon, Boyle, Newton and, in particular, Galileo, who used his theories [in the 'Dialogo'] to support his own proof of the correctness of the findings of Copernicus in cosmology" (PMM). "Gilbert provided the only fully developed theory . . . and the first comprehensive discussion of magnetism since the thirteenth century 'Letter on the Magnet' of Peter Peregrinus" (DSB). Frankfurt Andreas Wevhelius, 1600. Folio (33.5 x 21 cm); title, 3 double page woodcut maps (two of Russia and one of Moscow) and 1 folded genealogical table and 7 full page illustrations, some repairs to preliminary pages, some browning, occasional spotting or foxing, minor water stain to lower left corner; contemporary calf with crowned initals H.L. on upper cover, rebacked, rubbed.
