[Summaries of Cases from the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Parts of Coke's Reports]. Great Britain, c.1600-1700. 200 pp. Folio (11-1/4" x 7-3/4"). Contemporary limp vellum, ties lacking. Binding cocked, moderate soiling and edgewear with some wear to spine ends and corners, "No: 21" in small later hand to front cover, "Begone ye 25t of Aprill/ terme recesses allowed me/ for ye doeing it," final signature of text block detached. Light toning to text, some wear and fold lines, to corners, gradually diminishing faint dampstaining to about half of the leaves, spark burn sto a few leaves. Text in neat hand to rectos and versos of all but the first leaf. $2,500. * The inscription suggests this manuscript was compiled by a student at the Inns of Court. It is collection of summaries (in English) of selected cases from the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Parts of Coke's Reports, which were first published in 1604, 1605 and 1607. (The compiler followed Coke's order, but referred to the parts as "books.") This manuscript is interesting as the record of a near-contemporary reader's response to this great authority; it shows which cases mattered to him and how he interpreted them. A fair copy free of corrections, it was clearly intended to serve as a reference work.

Jaen Petersz SAENREDAM (Zaandam 1565 - Assendelft 1607)
[Click Below for Full Description]

EYLEND, Martin.
VD17, 23:287401X (3 copies); Jähns, pp. 1105-1106 note; not in Cockle; Sloos. Rare second(?) edition, in the original German, of a brief compendious handbook of fortification following the Dutch methods and tactics. In the years 1600 to 1625, the Dutch Prince of Orange, Maurits van Nassau (1567-1625), proved the efficacy of the new Dutch ideas and techniques in fortification and siege warfare in the Eighty Years' War against Spain. With the German States now embroiled in the hostilities that spread to other parts of Europe as the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), there was a great practical interest in these new methods. While foreign authors were beginning to incorporate Dutch methods in their manuals, these tended to be up-market works, out of the reach of the common soldier or even many officers, and they also failed to keep up with the rapidly developing Dutch art of fortification. The present cheap compendium, indifferently printed on coarse paper, gives a much better idea of what common soldiers, lower-level officers and the interested general public would have learned about the new Dutch art of fortification than the great works by famous authors.Title-page and last page browned and the former also has a small stain, otherwise in very good condition. A fortification handbook for the common man, rare in all editions.

In very good conditions. -Italy according to Magini: a cartographical model for posterity- Giovanni Antonio Magini was born in Padua in 1555, dedicating himself to the study of astronomy from an early age. In 1588 the Senate of Bologna appointed him Lecturer of Astronomy at the local university, choosing him instead of Galileo Galilei. His friendship with the Duke of Mantua, Vincenzo Gonzaga, helped Magini in his quest to obtain cartographical material for map-making from the various sovereigns ruling the different italian states at that time. Because of Magini's early death in 1617 this effort was made known by his son Fabio whe … [Click Below for Full Description]

[SERRARIUS, Petrus].
Landwehr, Emblem and fable books 1; NNBW X, cols. 911-913; STCN (1 copy); WorldCat (5 copies). Very rare first edition of a religious emblem book by the eccentric millenarian theologian Petrus Serrarius (1600-1669). It contains 45 emblems (measuring ca. 75 x 48 mm) with engraved texts underneath and an explanatory letterpress poem on the facing pages. The work is divided into three parts with fifteen emblems each. The emblems are probably engraved by the publisher Savry after the plates Boëtius à Bolswert made for Herman Hugo's Pia desideria, the most influential religious emblem book published in the Netherlands (Antwerp, 1624). Serrarius was born in Flanders and lived for many years in Amsterdam calling himself "priest of the General Church". He was a friend of Comenius and wrote many controversial theological works leading to a conflict with the official church and especially with professor Maresius of Groningen University. With library stamp on title-page. Slightly browned with some occasional small spots and thumbing, bookblock weak in binding and red colour on the woodcut on last page. Binding scratched on boards. Otherwise a good copy.

PLUTARCH
Lyon: Frellon, Paul, 1600. 1600 PLUTARCH Parallel Lives Alexander the Great Rome Jacques Amyot 6v RARE"The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled." ― Plutarch 'Plutarch's Lives' or 'Parallel Lives' is one of the most important and comprehensive collection of biographies of famous Greek and Roman figures. Plutarch was not so much focused on providing a historical account of these famous individuals as much as he was seeking to write of the type of person they were and the life in which they lived. BÖKEL (BÖCKELIUS), Wilhelm.
For Wilhelm Bökel: Georg Erler (ed.), Die jüngeren Matrikel der Universität Leipzig, vol. I, p. 37. Elaborately illustrated album amicorum of Wilhelm Bökel junior, with contributions by eminent scholars and noblemen. Bökel (or Böckelius), born in Stendal (Germany) ca. 1600, was the son of a physician and studied law in Stettin (Szczecin in Poland), Helmstedt, Jena and Leipzig. Most of the contributions date from his time in Leipzig (1621-1624), but the album also includes entries from prominent noblemen from Pomerania and the Baltic region, such as Philip II, Duke of Pomerania, and Jacob Kettler, Duke of Courland and Semigallia. Most of the contributions are in Latin (with some mottoes in French, German and Greek) and 25 are illustrated with the coat of arms of the contributor in coloured gouaches, highlighted with gold. The 23 engraved portraits, several by or after Lucas and Wolfgang Kilian, show European rulers and clergymen. Also included is a view of Venice in coloured gouaches, highlighted with gold, and another of a woman throwing herself on a sword, perhaps intended as Lucretia.Loosely inserted is a manuscript index and 4-page manuscript report on the album by Johannes Bodel Nijenhuis, noting that it was sold at auction in Leiden by C.C. van der Hoek on 3 March 1854, as well as a copy of the report by C.W. van der Hoek, dated 30 March 1854. Some soiling and an occasional leaf with a few letters of the text or the edge of a drawing very slightly shaved, but otherwise in very good condition.

COLOM, Jacob Aertsz.
Koeman, Col 5; V.d. Krogt, Koeman's Atlantes Neerlandici IIIB, 365:02 (pp. 635-637); Shirley, British Library T.COLM-1a; STCN 853365954; Tiele, Bibl. 262. Second Dutch edition of a charming atlas of the Seventeen Provinces (more or less the modern Netherlands and Belgium), composed and published by the ambitious Amsterdam map- and globe maker, printer and publisher Jacob Aertsz. Colom (1600-1673). Like Willem Jansz. Blaeu, Colom first began publishing pilot guides and maritime atlases (no one else dared compete with Blaeu in that field), but both branched out into terrestrial atlases. The maps and portraits are printed from the plates of the rare first Dutch edition (1635), but the text is updated.Apart from the general maps of the Netherlands (in Roman times as well as in the 17th century) and the Seventeen provinces, there are many detailed maps of regions and cities with the surrounding areas, including the Meyery van 's-Hertogenbosch, Bergen op Zoom, Breda, Valckenburgh and Dalem, Malines, diocese of Liège, Namur, Veluwe, Zutphen, island of Dordrecht, Delfland, 6 maps of the new polders (Bylmermeer, Purmer, Wormer, Heer Huygen-waert, Diemermeer, Zype), Walcheren, Ooster- and Westergoe, and Seven wolde.Restored tears in the head and foot margins of the title-page, map 31 on paper with smaller margins, map 45 with a water stain in the corner, but otherwise in very good condition.

Albrecht beschikte over ca. 7000 man te voet en 1200 man ruiterij. Het aantal kanonnen van het Staatse leger was slechts zes, het Spaanse leger had er acht. De slag werd door de Nederlanders gewonnen, maar er sneuvelden 1000 man en er waren 700 zwaargewonden. De Spanjaarden verloren 3000 man. [Click Below for Full Description]

Includes another copy of the Indulgencias concedidas por diversos Pontífices", placed after the title page (4 leaves). BOTERO Giovanni
1600. Octavo (204 x 142 mm); four folding engraved maps of the continents. 19th century quarter green morocco over marbled boards, gilt titling and decoration to spine. Boards rubbed, corners bumped and frayed, a few small wormholes (now defunct) to joints, very good otherwise. Venice : Giorgio Angelieri, Giovanni Botero (1533-1617) was an Italian Jesuit, who became secretary to the Duke of Savoy. An important writer and noted economist, he is best known for his Relationi Universali, a geographical description of the world, which incorporates a political and religious commentary. The book was first published in 1591, and quickly spawned a large number of editions, a number of which were illustrated with maps. This edition, published by Angelieri in 1600, includes maps of the four continents based on the respective maps in Abraham Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, first published in Antwerp in 1570; the map of the Americas has the characteristic bulge in the west coast of South America made familiar by Ortelius. The maps, three of which are signed by Girolamo Porro, first appeared in Giovannia d'Anania's L'Universale Fabrica de Universi, 1582; Burden, referring to the map of America, described it as ? a typically attractive Italian copperplate engraving .? Reference: Burden 54, describing the Americas map. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
