BERTIUS, Petrus
Cornelius Claesz. Map. Copper engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 3.75" x 5".This miniature map shows the region of Istria, the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea. The map extends from the Gulf of Trieste to the Bay of Kvarner and includes parts of modern-day Italy, Croatia, and Slovenia. The map also includes the Gulf of Venice in the Adriatic Sea. The moiré patterned sea has two tiny ships and sea monsters, and there is a small title cartouche in the lower left. Forts are colored red. Latin text on verso. The map is from the Latin edition of Langenes's "Caert Thresoor," published between 1600 and 1606. Although unsigned, the map was likely engraved by Petrus Kaerius (Pieter van den Keere). The map is in good condition with full original margins. Minor scuffing and toning. First published in 1598, Barent Langenes's "Caert-Thresoor," or "Map Treasury," included plates executed by the most famous engravers in Amsterdam. The atlas and its well-engraved small maps set a new standard for minor atlases. This map of Istria reflects growing cartographic knowledge and skill in Amsterdam at the turn of the century.

Braun & Hogenberg
Europe: Cologne G von Kempen 1600. Copper engraved view of Saintes on the Charente from the fifth volume of Braun & Hogenberg's "Civitas Orbis Terrarum. " French text to verso. Original old colour. The birds eye view shows the city with the bridge over the Charente into the walled city. The two large churches dominate, with the remains of the Roman ampitheatre on the slopes of the hill behind and to the right part of the Roman aquaduct Good impression; Colours bright; 3 tiny wormholes & paper fault [ just right of cartouche repaired]; upper centre fold split repaired; small tear [10mm] to lower blank margin with repair. The "Civitas Orbis Terrarum" of Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg was the first systemstic city atlas, possible intended to compliment the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum "of Abraham Ortelius published in 1570. There is strong evidence that Braun, Hogenberg and Ortelius discussed the planned work, although some scholars believe it was influenced by Sabastien Munster's "Cosmographia" R A Skelton in his introduction to the facsimile edition [ 1965] puts the case f for the "Theatrum " of Ortelius being the model for the work ( "(it) is made abundantly clear by the similarity between the two works in title, in format and in the layout and serial order of the plates and text" First publishe in 1572 in Cologne just two years after Ortelius' " Theatrum" it was published in six volumes in the years between 1572 and 1617. Georg Braun [1541-1622], Canon of Cologne Cathedral wrote the preface for all but the last volume and also the text accompanying each plan or v … [Click Below for Full Description]

ANONYMOUS
1600. Anonymous. unbound. Map. Lithograph. Sheet measures 18.5" x 34.5". This fascinating map covers a section of the city of London or Londinium to present the Roman remains found in the city. Extends from Tower Hill to Blackfrairs Bridge and from the Thames River north as far as Finsbury Circle. The ancient Roman city is shown within the Roman wall, here shown in red. Modern street names are identified, as are ancient streams, roman roads, ditches, etc. Shaded area along the river bank represent reclaimed land. The Roman city of Londinium was one of Great Britain's largest cities. At its height in the 2nd century, the population reached close to 60,000. Archeological excavations have revealed a major fire that destroyed most of the city and by the later half of the 2nd century, the size and population seem to have shrunk. Sometime around 190 and 225, the Romans built the London Wall defending the city. The wall would survive another 1600 years and its remains can still be seen throughout the city. The map is in good condition with some wear and toning along the original folds. Minor foxing at places. Hard to find.

Ptolemy/ Ruscelli Claudius (1500 - 1566)
Artist: Ptolemy/ Ruscelli Claudius ca ; date: ca1600. - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 18,5 x 24,5; - description: Map shows total Italy with Corsica; - vita of the artist: Girolamo Ruscelli (1500s-1566) was an Italian polymath, humanist, editor, and cartographer active in Venice during the early 16th century. Ruscelli is best known for his important revision of Ptolemy's Geographia, which was published post humously in 1574. It is generally assumed that Alexius Pedemontanus was a pseudonym of Girolamo Ruscelli. In a later work, Ruscelli reported that the Secreti contained the experimental results of an ?Academy of Secrets? that he and a group of humanists and noblemen founded in Naples in the 1540s. Ruscelli?s academy is the first recorded example of an experimental scientific society. The academy was later imitated by Giambattista Della Porta, who founded an ?Accademia dei Secreti? in Naples in the 1560s. Claudius Ptolemy (arround 100- 160 a.C.) Geographia, gives a list of geographic coordinates of spherical longitude and latitude of almost ten thousand point locations on the earth surface, as they were known at his times. The list is organized in Tabulae which cor- respond to specific regions of the three known continents at that time, Africa, Asia and Europe. Research on Ptolemy?s Geographia has started at the University of Thessaloniki, Greece, in the eighties, focused mainly, but not exclusively, on data re- lated to territories which are now under the sovereignty of the modern Greek state.
