Acquaforte e bulino, 1600, firmata e datata in lastra in basso a sinistra. Bibliografia: Bella, Cartografia Rara, p. 79, 71; The Giannalisa Feltrinelli Library, vol. 5, p. 73, 1075. Dimensioni 515x385. Etching and engraving, 1600, signed and dated on lower left plate. Matteo FLORIMI (1581-1613)
Incisione in rame, in ottime condizioni. Mattheus QUAD (Deventer 1557 - Colonia 1613)
The North Pole is shown according to legend as a large rock in a giant whirlpool and surrounded by four islands that are separated by rivers. The magnetic north is depicted as a separate island rock just outside the polar mass. In North America is an very early reference to California (California regio, sola fama Hispanis nota), curiously shown north of the El streto de Anian. The map depicts the attempts of Frobisher and Davis to locate the northern passages to Asia. The map image is surrounded by a floral design with four roundels in each corner. [Click Below for Full Description]

Kiøbenhaffn, Henrich Walkirch, 1600. Folio. I et samtidigt hellæderbind over træ. Rester af to læderspænder. Wolfgang Lazius
Francofurti: Adraeae Wecheli heredes, 1600. See pictures. Binding is worn with some rubbing and corners bare; spine has been crudely quickly repaired with a large strip of antiphonal vellum - endbands at top and bottom of spine look great. Inside - there are several creases on the title page, and a stamp and signature have been excised at the bottom, the paper then repaired. Graphite bookseller mark on rear of title page. Slight separation at hinge pages 14 to 15. Blue underlining on pages 13, 14, 15, 27, 28 & 29. Deckled edge at top of page 33. Page 37, the binding trimming process cut the top border line of the woodcut (illustration bound sideways). Occasional spots throughout, toning throughout and the woodcuts ghosted lightly onto the facing pages. It is a handsome work, mostly clean throughout, with nice margins. Two treats here; Wolfgang Lazius' work, printed in folio, on the migration of ancient peoples through Europe, with illustrations of 28 historic war costumes, in 21 woodcuts, 9 of which are full page; bound using early (possibly incunable) leaves of Decretum Gratiani (Decrees, Gratian) with blue and red manuscript initials. This work is broken into twelve "books"; some of the people groups discussed are still commonly discussed (Celts, Lombards), others are less familiar (Marcomanorum, Boiorum, etc.). The illustrations of the historic costumes are excellent (see pictures). "Lazius was an Austrian humanist who worked as a cartographer, historian, and physician. COLOM, Jacob Aertsz.
, . . Koeman, Col 5; V.d. Krogt, Koeman's Atlantes Neerlandici IIIB, 365:02 (pp. 635-637); Shirley, British Library T.COLM-1a; STCN 853365954; Tiele, Bibl. 262. Second Dutch edition of a charming atlas of the Seventeen Provinces (more or less the modern Netherlands and Belgium), composed and published by the ambitious Amsterdam map- and globe maker, printer and publisher Jacob Aertsz. Colom (1600-1673). Like Willem Jansz. Blaeu, Colom first began publishing pilot guides and maritime atlases (no one else dared compete with Blaeu in that field), but both branched out into terrestrial atlases. The maps and portraits are printed from the plates of the rare first Dutch edition (1635), but the text is updated.Apart from the general maps of the Netherlands (in Roman times as well as in the 17th century) and the Seventeen provinces, there are many detailed maps of regions and cities with the surrounding areas, including the Meyery van 's-Hertogenbosch, Bergen op Zoom, Breda, Valckenburgh and Dalem, Malines, diocese of Liège, Namur, Veluwe, Zutphen, island of Dordrecht, Delfland, 6 maps of the new polders (Bylmermeer, Purmer, Wormer, Heer Huygen-waert, Diemermeer, Zype), Walcheren, Ooster- and Westergoe, and Seven wolde.Restored tears in the head and foot margins of the title-page, map 31 on paper with smaller margins, map 45 with a water stain in the corner, but otherwise in very good condition.

NICOLAY, Nicolas de.
(Paris, 1600).Folio. Original wrappers, preserved in a modern marbled box. With 62 full-page engraved portraits of Turkish, Arabian and Greec characters and costumes and 17 full-page engraved epigrammatic plates prophesying the fall of the Ottoman empire.First published in French at Lyon in 1567 Les quatre premeurs livres des navigations et peregrinations orientales. This is the very rare anonymous and uncommon edition, with a new title. At the end: Artus THOMAS. This is one of the most important Turkish costume books. The fine costume plates were extremely influential and have been used as prototypes in many different works. Nicolay(1517-1583), royal geographer to the French king Charles IX, followed the ambassador Gabriel d' Aramon on his mission to Constantinople in 1551. In the Navigations, he deals as much with France after the outbreak of the civil war as with the Ottoman Empire. Through his portrayal of the Turks and other Mediterraneen peoples, the traveller turned royal geographer advocates loyalty to the monarch, religious moderation and tolerance, as well as national unity. The copper engravings are now generally accepted to have been made by Louis Danet after Nicolay's drawings (Angus O'Neill, Koç collection, 18). One of the most influential works on the Turks and their subject peoples to appear in the 16th century. It was translated into various … [Click Below for Full Description]
