[Moscow: Andronik Timofeev Nevezha?, 1600].Rare first edition of this important Eastern Orthodox liturgical book, in Russian binding. The Menaion contained texts for the service or celebration of specific observances, saints or events, which are tied to fixed calendar dates. In its complete form it was made of twelve volumes, one for each month. The Mineia Obshchaia, or General Menaion, was a simplified version. In it, services were not linked to any specific saint, but instead to types of saints; specific names could be added according to liturgical needs. The General Menaion thus provided the necessary texts to perform services for virtually any saint, including the more local or less widely known ones for whom a full Menaion service was not available. GILBERT, William
London: Peter Short, 1600. First edition of "the first major English scientific treatise based on experimental methods of research. Gilbert was chiefly concerned with magnetism; but as a digression he discusses in his second book the attractive effect of amber (electrum), and thus may be regarded as the founder of electrical science. He coined the terms 'electricity,' 'electric force' and 'electric attraction.' His 'versorium', a short needle balanced on a sharp point to enable it to move freely, is the first instrument designed for the study of electrical phenomena, serving both as an electroscope and electrometer. He contended that the earth was one great magnet; he distinguished magnetic mass from weight; and he worked on the application of terrestrial magnetism to navigation. Gilbert's book influenced Kepler, Bacon, Boyle, Newton and, in particular, Galileo, who used his theories [in the 'Dialogo'] to support his own proof of the correctness of the findings of Copernicus in cosmology" (PMM). "Gilbert provided the only fully developed theory . . . and the first comprehensive discussion of magnetism since the thirteenth century 'Letter on the Magnet' of Peter Peregrinus" (DSB). Dibner, Heralds of Science 54; Grolier/Horblit 41; Heilbron, Electricity in the 17th and 18th Centuries, pp. 169-179; Norman 905; PMM 107; STC 11883; Wellcome 2830. HERBERSTEIN, Sigismund von.
Frankfurt Andreas Wevhelius, 1600. Folio (33.5 x 21 cm); title, 3 double page woodcut maps (two of Russia and one of Moscow) and 1 folded genealogical table and 7 full page illustrations, some repairs to preliminary pages, some browning, occasional spotting or foxing, minor water stain to lower left corner; contemporary calf with crowned initals H.L. on upper cover, rebacked, rubbed. First edition of this compilation containing the first detailed eyewitness ethnography of Russia, a country largely unknown to Europeans at that time. Herberstein (1486-1566), an Austrian diplomat who was twice sent to Russia as the Habsburg ambassador to Moscow in 1517 and 1526, was the first foreign visitor to speak the language, read Cyrillic and record his experiences. The book was so warmly welcomed among the courts in Europe that "from its original publication in 1549, it became a veritable 'Baedeker' of travel narratives. [Herberstein] can be said to be almost singlehandedly responsible for the European image of Russia over several centuries" (Dr Rima Greenhill, Stanford University). Herberstein's work was considered of such value that for many decades to come, travellers to Russia were strongly advised never to travel without it, as was the case with the English poet George Turberville. "In one of his letters from Russia during the mission of 1568-69, headed by Thomas Randolph, Turberville advised his friends never to venture to this barbarous land and, to stress his point, referred them to Herberstein's Rerum Moscoviticarum Commentarii: "To Sigismundus' book repair, who all the truth c … [Click Below for Full Description]

Latin and Ancient Greek (to 1453) on facing pages. Title: "Olympia, Pythia, Nemea, Isthmia. Eight of the rest of the lyric songs, Alcaei, Sappho, Stesichori, Ibyci, Anacreontis, Bacchylidis, Simonides, Alcman, some are also for others. Edition IV." Pindar, renown poet of ancient Greece, wrote forty-four "Odes of Victory" for the winners of the wreath in the Olympian games, divided into four years or Olympiads, held in Olympia (the most prestigious), Pythia, Nemea, and Isthmia. Only known work of Pindar to survive in its entirety. Each Greek city-state was a separate political entity, so the Olympic Truce or "laying down of arms" ensured safety for the host city and safe passage for the athletes and spectators. The Olympic Games continue to symbolize peace, harmony, solidarity, friendship, and fair play. Adams 1233. HPB (CERL) GB-UkOxU.01.012277770. Encyclopaedia Britannica. Olympic org. Acquaforte e bulino, 1600, firmata e datata in lastra in basso a sinistra.
